A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR HUGH NOVEMBER OFFERINGS (AND EARLY DECEMBER, TOO!) Sunday, November 5, All Saints Sunday. As a way of remembering the saints who have touched and blessed our lives, we are each invited to bring one or more photos of our loved ones to either of our worship services. A table will be placed in front of the altar on which these photos may be placed. Don t forget: Daylight Saving Time ends on Nov. 5. Set your clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night. Sunday, November 12, Congregational Budget Sunday. One service at 9:30AM. It has been our recent practice to vote on the annual budget on the first Sunday in November. This year, due to our celebration of the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation on October 29, we will hold our annual budget meeting on Sunday, November 12. So that all of our members may attend, we will combine our 8 and 10:30AM services together and have a special combined worship service at 9:30AM. The budget meeting (where the congregation shall vote on the proposed 2018 budget) will take place immediately following the service. Tuesday, November 21, Thanksgiving Celebration at 6:30PM Following our monthly Zachary s Table, at 5PM, the congregation and all of our guests will be invited to participate in a Thanksgiving Celebration at 6:30PM. It has been a few years since we held a Thanksgiving service. It was felt that it would be most appropriate and timely to hold one this year, especially given the fact that our community meal, Zachary s Table, will take place that day, too. How great it would be to gather with our Wethersfield neighbors around a delicious meal and then focus our gratitude in prayer, praise and thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving Celebration will be held in our sanctuary. Sunday, November 26, Reconciling in Christ Forum at 9AM St. Paul s has had an ongoing conversation as to how best to welcome and love our LGBTQ friends and neighbors. One of the most challenging aspects of being LGBT or Q is the silence, or even outright hostility that many experience from the church. With our proximity to a large High School, and knowing the stigma that many experience from merely being different, St. Paul s is trying to discern the best way to respond out of love and faithfulness to those among God s children who bear a secret burden. On November 26, between our two worship services, we will come together with leaders from other faith communities (including Lutheran) to learn about how other congregations have become open and affirming. Let s continue this important conversation with love and openness. For more information, you may talk to Patty Bengtson or Pastor Hugh. (Continued on next page)

A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR HUGH, CON T Sunday, December 3, Christmas Caroling at 1PM Let us share the true spirit of the Advent season through the singing of Christmas Carols. We will come together at 12:00 noon for pizza (or something quick for a light lunch) and then head out to share our love for Christmas through Christmas Carols with those who are homebound or in nearby nursing homes. If you have a name of someone who would welcome a visit, or if you would welcome some carolers, let us know. We ll do our best to accommodate whomever we can. Mark your calendars now! Pastor Hugh WELCOMING THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY PANEL DISCUSSION ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 26 TH AT 9AM (BETWEEN SERVICES) Please join us as we discuss why St. Paul s needs to actively welcome LGBTQ PEOPLE! The experience shared by many belonging to this group is everybody but me is welcome at church. This is why it is crucial to make a special effort to communicate an authentic welcome to LGBTQ people. How can we at St. Paul s create an authentic welcome? Joining us will be Amanda Nelson, Executive Director of Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries and Amanda Klatt, resources coordinator at PFLAG. Please join us for this important conversation.

Please call Bernice Noeker if you have any questions. AN ONGOING CHALLENGE DURING WORSHIP. CAN YOU HELP US? There s no doubt that St. Paul s is a friendly congregation. And I think we can all agree that we are welcoming, too. For many of us, Sundays are like going to a beloved family reunion. There are times, however, when our friendly and welcoming nature can have unintended consequences: we can be a bit noisy before and during worship. In our enthusiasm to connect with people we may not have seen since the previous week, or our desire to share some important bit of news with our neighbor (especially during the prelude and postlude), our conversations can become a bit distracting. Some of our fellow worshippers really need some quiet time before and after worship to prepare their hearts and minds before worship. If there is a way to lower our voices a little (or even save the conversation until after the service has concluded) that would be a precious gift to those of us who really need these moments for quiet meditation. Also and I know this can be a sensitive and easily-misunderstood point sometimes even our beautiful and precious little ones, in their occasional spontaneous celebrations in the middle of the service, can add to this challenge. (I m truly reluctant to even bring it up for fear that the wrong message could be received.) Speaking for myself, I love (LOVE) to have our children in worship. I know I m not alone in this. (Jesus loves them, too, by the way!) So, it is with that in our hearts that I am hoping we can all put our prayer caps on to imagine how we might welcome and celebrate our littlest ones, and at the same time find a way to keep their enthusiastic outbursts of praise from distracting others from their worship. Our love for one another, especially our children, is really wonderful to experience. I witness it every Sunday. It is in the spirit of that love that I lift up this ongoing challenge. I m pretty sure we can find a way to solve it that will affirm and benefit everyone. Pastor Hugh

A WALK IN FAITH AND TRUST: THE STORY OF ST. PAUL S REFUGEE EXPERIENCES (PART ONE) In 1976, St. Paul s took on the huge task of sponsoring two young brothers from Laos who came to this country from a refugee camp in Cambodia. I met with Ellie Bengtson in October when she shared with me her notes, her writings and her memories about this exciting time in the history of St. Paul s. I know you will find it interesting to remember or to learn about this part of our church s history. Here is the story of Mitt and Yangge Moua. A WALK IN FAITH AND TRUST I wonder how often God would like to shake Christians and say, How many times must I tell you to trust me and everything will work out for the best. Yet we continue to struggle through our own bramble patches of doubt, unable to set out confidently until we are sure of our route. Yet there is another way. Dimly lighted. Unknown. When we move on a path with uncertain turns. A way that ends with a promise of blessing if we walk in trust with God. This is the story of a trust walk that involved two young men and an entire church. For each of us who were members of that church, the story is different; for each one of us saw it through the eyes of his or her own soul. For that is how God moves. Impossibly unique, leaving each of us affected by His touch. St. Paul s received a request for help asking us to consider being a sponsor for a Laotian Refugee family. In November 1975, the Church Council called a special congregational meeting to consider this request. Sponsorship meant commitment. Time and money were needed. We would have to locate housing, employment, household furnishings, and clothing, meet the family at the airport, learn to communicate, be supportive in every area of their lives until they could become self-sufficient. Each family would respond differently to the change in culture and the adjustment to a new life. There might be language problems, difficulties with household and mechanical equipment, unfamiliarity with our food, fears of new and unknown experiences, plus a real possibility of homesickness. As sponsors, we would also be responsible for medical care, Social Security cards and finding proper educational resources for the refugees. The length of the family s dependency would be uncertain. Their ability to adjust to language differences and a new culture would perhaps be a difficult one. Without homes or possessions, with an uncertain future, they waited for someone to give them hope. Who is our neighbor? rang in our ears. For a congregation who liked to be prepared and know what was expected-the only certain thing seemed to be that everything was uncertain! As discussion began, our Pastor of less than a year, George Meslow, was honest. He approved of our sponsorship as he was adjusting to his new calling at St. Paul s. He would support our decision to be a sponsoring church but the members of the congregation must accept the responsibility of the work involved. A Church Council member shared the thoughts of that group stating that while they supported the idea of sponsoring a family, they would need the support and dedication of the whole congregation through time, talents, and treasures. He concluded, I do not see how we can do it, but I do know that if we do it, it will be the best thing that ever happened to this congregation.

A WALK IN FAITH AND TRUST: THE STORY OF ST. PAUL S REFUGEE EXPERIENCES (PART ONE) For over an hour, members aired doubts, concerns and fears, yeses and yes-buts, questions and suppositions. Even those who were in favor had doubts about how the church could manage such a seemingly impossible task. Frustration built up as we worried and many seemed to be too afraid to get involved. Then a motion from a man who said he would make no personal commitment said, I believe that God is offering us all a chance to reach out and do something to help people who need us. I make a motion that this church become involved in the refugee program. Again a well of doubts threatened to drown us all rising like flood waters and threatening to overtake any positive action. The words were spoken, With God s Help. Someone expressed the thought: If a single family could sponsor an immigrant family back in the 1800 s, surely a church like St. Paul s can do it today. We know we won t be alone. God will be with us. Can we all say, Yes, with the help of God? Who knows what caused others to make their own personal commitment. Some had come to encourage, support and be involved. By the end of the meeting, about a dozen people had promised to be active on a refugee committee and the motion to sponsor a refugee family had been passed. Our trust walk had begun. Trust can still be tentative. We decided to apply for two men. A job had already been located and this gave us a measure of confidence. Apartment hunting began and furniture and clothing were solicited. Sub committees were formed. We had expected a six week notice of arrival. We were shocked into action when we soon learned that two brothers would arrive within a week! Mitt and Yangge Moua, just 21 and 20 years old, would be here very soon! Two days before their plane landed, temporary housing was found. Another Laotian family volunteered their two sons to travel to the airport with us to meet the brothers and interpret for us. The first meal presented a problem! What to serve? A chicken rice casserole was waiting for two tired men when they arrived that evening, and we all began to live a day at a time as our commitment became a reality. The next seven months were an incredible adventure, as God met our questions and our trust with answers and blessings. Many, many members of our congregation responded willingly to the responsibility of preparing for, welcoming and settling the two Laotian brothers who came to us in February From our Pastor and his family, our council, adult members and church school children, time, energy, funds and gifts came to provide the physical and emotional support to two young men who came to us as strangers carrying all their earthly belongings in a suitcase. God seemed to have chosen Mitt and Yangge especially for us. HE dealt with our questions and doubts by showing us they had been needless. Mitt spoke English, had worked with the US Army and was familiar with American food. Miraculously, Pastor Meslow found an inexpensive apartment on a bus line near the high school on Maple Avenue in Hartford, on the same street as the job opening which Mitt accepted. (This job was also found by Pastor Meslow who at first wasn t sure he could help!). Our congregation responded to the need for help. Women decorated and set up the kitchen. Church School children brought groceries. Furniture and household items, clothing and money were donated. A transportation pool was formed. Meals were cooked on the nights Mitt and Yangge began English classes at night. In less than a month, the two brothers were self-supporting.

A WALK IN FAITH AND TRUST: THE STORY OF ST. PAUL S REFUGEE EXPERIENCES (PART ONE) Our concerns had been for practical and physical needs of sponsorship. With God s help those needs were met. We became for Mitt and Yangge a new family, easing their grief at leaving home and family forever. Mitt was already a baptized Christian and he was encouraging Yangge to read his Laotian translation of the Bible. He spoke often of God s love and goodness, and his dependence on Him. Very carefully, we invited them to our worship services but did not want them to feel obligated or pressured. Smiling, they accepted and also began attending other congregational functions. We were feeling blessed because of the ease of adjustment, the positive response of our members and the fine rapport with our two young men. BUT GOD HAD ONLY BEGUN TO SHOW US HIS BLESS- INGS. Pentecost Sunday, 1976, was to be a day of celebration for our congregation. The fifth grade church school class would receive communion for the first time and Yangee was to be baptized. Pretty average for Pentecost, you might think, but for our church, this day would be different. Special. The coming to fruition of a promise of blessing. There are no words to express the feelings of that day. It was a new beginning, with more blessings ahead. Anxious to learn what God s plans were for them, Mitt and Yangge had continued to study their Bibles every day, to ask searching questions and to put their dependence on God rather than themselves. The most special part of this Pentecost Day was that our two young men became members of St. Paul s Church. GOD HAD INDEED GIVEN US MUCH MORE THAN WE EXPECTED TO RECEIVE. We had heard the words, for I was a stranger and you welcomed me and had been afraid to respond. But God had not allowed us to turn away. He had knocked upon the closed doors of our hearts and moved into the corners of our lives. And it was through the lives of two young men that we were to experience God at work within us, enabling us to do what never could have been done alone. I will bless those in every nation who trust in me as you do. Mitt and Yangge did eventually make a move to Minnesota where they lived with their families. Yangee and his wife Mai See stayed in Minnesota and raised four children. Mitt and his family moved a while later to Fresno, California. Recently, Russ Bengtson (through Facebook) was able to locate Mitt and his wife Yer (who were married at St. Paul s by Pastor Meslow in 1978). Mitt is now 62 years old and he and Yer still live in Fresno, California and recently celebrated their 39 th wedding anniversary. They have four daughters and two sons and six grandchildren. In Minnesota, Mitt was Vice President of a marketing company and traveled all over the US. Twenty five years ago, God called Mitt to be a born again Christian and fifteen years ago he became a founding Pastor in the Hmong (his ethnicity) Independent Christian denomination. There are nine churches around the country. Mitt has been doing missionary work in the last six years in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. Mitt and Ellie were able to speak together a few weeks ago and to share so many wonderful memories of that time in Sadly, Yangge passed away ten years ago. Mitt and Yer have talked of making a country wide driving tour with an included stop to visit, in his own words, my church people at St. Paul s in Wethersfield. What a special day that would be for our congregation! St. Paul s went on to sponsor two additional families the Xiong and Nyugen families. More to come about those experiences in the January Epistle. Thanks, Ellie, for sharing this with us all.
