2 E2 SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2015 Day 2 Dantzler Hose, St. Matthews The Dantzler Hose was bilt in 1850 in St. Matthews as the smmer home of Jacob M. Dantzler and his family. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architectral, political and military signiicance. In 1852, Olin Miller Dantzler, son of the elder Dantzler, married and moved into the smmer hose as his permanent residence. Day 1 Feb. 14, 1908: Calhon Conty is born St. Matthews residents F.J. Byck and M. Jarecky donated the land for the iconic Calhon Conty Corthose, which was dedicated in May Citizens tried three times to establish Calhon Conty, with the third time in proving to be the charm. Day 3 Harry S. Dent: Sothern Strategy to Christian ministry Whether he was acting as a political adviser to President Richard Nixon or saving sols in eastern Erope, St. Matthews native Harry Shler Dent, Sr. went into the job with the same focs. Following his gradation from Presbyterian College, Dent began working for U.S. Sen. Strom Thrmond. The senator switched to the Repblican Party at Dent s rging. It was throgh his political work that Dent became known as the developer of the Repblican Sothern strategy. The Sothern strategy helped Nixon win the presidency in 1968 and move the Soth into the GOP colmn. In 1981, Dent closed his law practice to begin fll-time service as a Christian lay leader. He served as director of the Billy Graham Lay Center and chairman of the 1987 Soth Carolina Billy Graham Crsade. Day 4 Greek Revival-style Rast Hose former stagecoach stop The Edward Monts Rast Hose in Calhon Conty is considered a testament to classic Greek Revival architectre. The residence, constrcted abot 1850, was a stagecoach stop when Charleston was still the capital of Soth Carolina. In the 1950s, the Rasts moved the hose, at that time mostly dilapidated, a qarter of a mile and bilt nderneath the strctre a irst loor fashioned from old brick that featred a large family room. The residence has doble windows and high ceilings. Today, the home is located near the Calhon Conty Contry Clb between the towns of Cameron and St. Matthews. Day 5 Col. Thomson earned nickname dring Revoltionary War A Pennsylvania nat- Col. William Thomson, who settled in Amelia Township which is today Calhon Conty, served an active role in the British colonial government and later in the government of Soth Carolina. Thomson was a politician, soldier and patriot. He was called Danger by the men who foght with him dring the Revoltionary War. Born of Scottish parents in 1726, Thomson and his family moved to the northern section of Amelia Township, a few miles east of what is now Fort Motte. Day 6 Sandy Rn s Red Store bilt in 1820 A landmark in Calhon Conty, the Red Store has been vacant for nearly 20 years. The strctre is being considered for inclsion on the National Register of Historic Places. Bilt by Herman Geiger abot , the store was sitated on a main stagecoach road from Charleston to Colmbia. The bilding was sed as a residence and as a store. Its long wing was bilt in 1821 and sed as a place to store heavy groceries and other staples. Later, the front rooms of the strctre accommodated dry goods and a grocery store. Day 7 Rast designed Tricentennial tables As Soth Carolina s Tricentennial was celebrated in 1970, Calhon Conty resident Edward Monts Rast had something in store for the celebration. Rast designed two Tricentennial tables. One was given to the Governor s Mansion in Colmbia as a gift in honor of the anniversary. The other was presented to President Richard Nixon throgh his adviser and Calhon Conty native Harry Shler Dent. The table was presented dring the conty s Tricentennial Week festivities in Jne Day 8 William R. Thomson, owner of Cave Hall, prominent in late 1700s Cave Hall, also called Wright s Blf, is located on the Santee River, Halfway Swamp and Bll Blf Creek. It is named for a series of caves in the Sotheast Basin of Soth Carolina referred to as the Lower Pine Belt, or Savannah Region. It was on this tract that Moses Thomson established Cave Hall Plantation. His grandson, William Rssell Thomson, either inherited or boght the place. William Rssell Thomson was an oicer of the American Revoltion. Later, he was jstice of the peace for Orangebrgh District, 1785; manager of election for St. Matthews Parish, 1786; elected to Soth Carolina Hose of Representatives, St. Matthews Parish, 1790; appointed ordinary of Orangebrgh District by the Legislatre, October 1791, and elected sherif of Orangebrgh District by the Legislatre, December, Day 10 St. Matthews rolled ot welcome mat for prple martins The prple martin s diet consists entirely of insects, inclding mosqitoes. A town in sothwestern Illinois that was experiencing an onslaght of mosqitoes dring smmers was able to redce the nmber of the pests by attracting prple martins. St. Matthews Rotarians adopted the idea in 1970 and began placing prple martin hoses in the conty. Day 13 Lone Star Like many small towns in 1893 the Atlantic Coast Line bilt a railroad in the present day area of Low Falls. The original name for what became Lone Star was Abrn. The irst store was bilt by Bll & Taylor. It was becase of this lone light shining from the store at night that an engineer working for the railroad name this stop Lone Star. Day 9 Calhon s Peterkin won Plitzer in 1929 A resident of Calhon Conty was awarded the Plitzer Prize for American Literatre in Jlia Mood Peterkin was the recipient of the coveted honor for her book Scarlet Sister Mary, a novel abot the lives of blacks in the rral Soth. Peterkin s novel was chosen for the Plitzer Prize over notable works sch as William Falkner s The Sond and the Fry and Thomas Wolfe s classic, Look Homeward, Angel. Day 15 Golden Kernel Carolinas irst pecan-shelling plant Before the trn of the centry, Dr. S.J. Smmers, a family physician in the Cameron commnity, broght from Mississippi the irst pecan seedlings to be planted in Soth Carolina on a commercial scale. In 1924, Golden Kernel Pecan Co. Inc. opened as a pecan-shelling operation. The Smmers family grew pecans and raised hogs. The nts were cracked by hand, and Golden Kernel not only sold what it grew bt boght nts from Holly Hill, Aiken and Orangebrg to crack, ship and sell. The company became the irst pecan-shelling plant in the Carolinas. Today the operation bys and sells nts grown in Soth Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. The bsiness is operated by Smmers two sons, David and Bill. Day 11 Wannamaker soght to grow a better soybean In the early 1940s, the soybean was relatively nknown in Calhon Conty. At that time abot 3,800 acres of the crop were planted in the conty. John E. Wannamaker, Jr. of St. Matthews was one of the Soth s pioneers in the se of soybeans. His nmber one goal was to ind a soybean with the highest yield that was the most shatter and weather-resistant with heavy pod distribtion, high oil content and a good matrity date. Day 12 Marion Gressette, powerfl state senator When Calhon Conty was formed in 1908, the ftre president pro tempore of the Soth Carolina Senate was a lad of 6. Lawrence Marion Gressette was born in the Snny Plain section of what was to become Calhon Conty on Feb. 11, Gressette strove to relect the principles instilled by his parents, the late John Thomas and Rosa Wannamaker Gressette. He gradated from the University of Soth Carolina Law School in 1924 and was elected to the Hose a year later. He served in the Senate from Gressette fond himself serving on many Senate committees and became admired in the body. He became the chair of the Senate Jdiciary Committee in 1953 and was one of the state s most powerfl lawmakers for decades. Day 14 Dr. Clemmie Webber led life of service Dr. Clemmie Webber raises her hands in celebration at the ceremony annoncing the naming of Bolevard Street in Orangebrg from its intersection with U.S. Highway 21 to its intersection with S.C. Highway 33 as Webber Bolevard. She was a scientist, edcator, athor, mentor, pioneer, commnity leader, wife and mother. St. Matthews native Dr. Clemmie Embly Webber grew p on Orangebrg s Treadwell Street with her for yonger siblings. Day 16 Wannamakers pioneers in seed, soybean bsiness The Wannamaker brothers, from left, Tretin, Whit and Banks, are shown at their St. Matthews farm in the 1920s. The Calhon Conty Wannamaker family s roots go all the way back to the year The family was farming then, and nearly 300 years later it contines to do so.

3 FACES & PLACES Day 17 Day 19 Horace Ott, composer of jazz and pop Sandy Rn s Baker Hose dates to the 1820s The catchy rhythms of The Village People s 1978 hit song Y.M.C.A. were the work of St. Matthews native Horace Ott, who started taking piano lessons in his hometown at age 10. My brother complained abot the noise he made while practicing, Ott said. He said he cold not pass the piano withot sitting down and playing, no matter the time of day or night. Some of Ott s other arrangements and recordings range from Yo Don t Have to Be a Star, which he created for Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, to Lsh Life for Joe Williams. SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2015 E3 The Baker family settled in the Sandy Rn area of Saxe-Gotha Township abot 1738 after 150 acres were srveyed for William Baker I. The srvey was done at the conlence of Sandy Rn and the Congaree River. In 1744, Baker I, an elder of the German Congregation of Dissenting Protestants at the Congarees prchased a nearby 350-acre tract from Richard Myrick where the William Baker Hose stands today, according to records at the Soth Carolina Department of Archives & History State Historic Preservation Oice. The present hose, which dates to the late 1820s or early 1830s, was bilt by either William Baker II or his son, William Baker III. Some records indicate Union Gen. William T. Sherman slept at the site in Febrary Day 20 Trader made home along Lyon s Creek Day 18 Rebecca B. Motte sacriiced home to drive ot British The Battle of Fort Motte took place in This battle was signiicant as the principal depot of British convoys between Charleston and Camden dring the American Revoltion. George Sterling, explorer and Indian trader, received a 570-acre land grant in March 1704 along Ox Creek (today called Lyon s Creek). Sterling became one of the area s irst settlers in what was to become Calhon Conty. He died in Day 21 Day 22 Banks Hose was home of state legislator, bsinessman Byck s Blf Archaeology experts describe the Byck s Blf Archaeological Site in Calhon Conty as signiicant for the qestions it can answer abot the archaeology of Soth Carolina. The site, which is at a restricted address, according to the Soth Carolina Department of Archives and History contains a complete seqence of hman occpation beginning with Paleo-Indian, contining throgh the Archaic and Woodland periods and terminating with the Mississippian Period, ths spanning some 10,000 years. Bilt abot 1893 and remodeled in , the original Banks hose was one story with a gable roof, two interior chimneys and a porch spanning the breadth of the façade. With the remodeling, the hose took its present form. Col. J.A. Banks, who served in the Soth Carolina Hose of Representatives and Senate, was born in 1859 and became a prominent merchant, farmer, banker and civic leader in the town of St. Matthews. Day 23 Day 24 Clark Hose once hosed the library Zante Plantation dates back to late 1770s The Clark Hose was bilt in 1877 and is considered to be one of St. Matthews oldest strctres. It served as a conty library from 1954 ntil Jne 1, Constrcted in classic Greek Revival style, the strctre was in se as a residence ntil it was converted for the library s se. The Zante Plantation was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in The Zante Plantation, located in the Fort Motte commnity of U.S. 601, has been the home of several prominent Soth Carolina families. The dwelling s history dates back to the late 18th centry when Peter Manigalt acqired the property. Day 28 Pritan farm Day 25 Day 26 Ulmer-Smmers hose reminder of 18th-centry architectre Msem owns piece of Trkey Track The Ulmer-Smmers hose located on S.C. Highway 33 in Cameron is one of the few examples remaining of late-18th centry domestic architectre in the Calhon Conty region. The hose was originally constrcted on land granted to John Jacob Ulmer in The hose was inherited by his son George Jacob. It has been in the Smmers family for generations. The earliest section of the Ulmer-Smmers hose was bilt before the trn of the 18th centry at the edge of a millpond. In 1852, it was decided that the site near the millpond was dangeros to the health of the hose s inhabitants. The pond s dam was destroyed. The hose was moved to another tract of land abot a mile away. Known once as Arant s Field, this site was home to an Indian village probably arond 500 AD. The Calhon Conty Msem and Cltral Center owns a piece of history as the msem was given 5 acres of the 205 acres. The land is now part of the Congaree Blfs Heritage Trst Preserve, Trkey Track. The property was given to the msem by Frances Crtchield Kellers and is listed on the National Historical Register. It is srronded and managed by The Congaree Blfs Heritage Trst Preserve. Consisting of abot 200 acres, the property is abot an hor s drive from Colmbia in the Fort Motte commnity and 15 mintes from St. Matthews. Haigler Hose has ties to early immigrants The Haigler Hose is a single-family dwelling that was bilt circa 1893 by Thomas Shadrack Haigler. The simple Qeen Anne farmhose featres folk Victorian decorative details. The porches incorporate decorative spindle work, inclding trned spports, delicate gingerbread and carved brackets. The hose is srronded by several otbildings which inclde an ice hose, spring hose, and a chicken coop. At one time a separate kitchen was probably connected to the hose with a breezeway. The home is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Day 29 Hoser residence served as tavern, horse-changing station St. Matthews bsinessman David Hoser bilt his home in 1829 on his plantation called Oak Grove. The hose is a two-story wood frame residence, rectanglar in plan, and has a one-story front porch and rear addition. The dwelling is a typical Upcontry farmhose with some Federal style featres in the interior. The two-story beaded weatherboard core of the hose has a gable roof, with a stccoed brick exterior chimney, the SCDAH states. Hoser was a planter who also operated a saw and grist mill. The land had been beqeathed to him by his father Andrew Hoser Jr., who was a soldier in the American Revoltion. Day 30 Holman Farm spans 278 years Fond on the centries-old Holman farm is the old Holman Cemetery, which incldes more than 50 graves of family members. As yo travel throgh St. Matthews east down Old Nmber Six Highway, yo pass throgh the Holman farm, which is one of only a few that still operate nder the same name as their ancestors some 278 years after the original land grant. Over the corse of the 278 years of operation, the farm has prodced crops sch as asparags, corn, small grains and soybeans. The farm also engaged in commercial egg prodction. Today, it relies on cotton and peant prodction. Seventh- and eighth-generation farmers Capers and Bill Holman se farming practices far diferent from what their ancestors sed all those years ago. Day 27 The Rev. Jacob Wannamaker bilt the home between 1820 and 1825 for Dr. and Mrs. George Keitt. The hose combines several featres of the Greek Revival style, particlarly in the interior detail. Its large white, two-story clapboard frame strctre featres a second-loor porch addition and two connecting rear wings, all set pon a raised basement. A porch extends across the entire irst-story front and rests pon the raised basement. Day 31 Day 32 St. Matthews Caleb Glover awarded Sothern Cross of Honor Congressman, secession delegate died from battle wond Caleb Glover, an African-American who was awarded the Sothern Cross of Honor by the Pal McMichael Chapter of the United Daghters of the Confederacy, played a pivotal role in the history of St. Matthews. Glover was born arond 1827 and died in He was a camp follower of Col. Olin Dantzler, a St. Matthews native who sfered a fatal battle wond on Jne 2, 1864, in Bermda Hndred, Virginia, dring the Civil War. Glover accompanied Dantzler to the battleield dring the Civil War and retrned Dantzler s body to St. Matthews for brial. Glover also recovered and retrned home the body of Col. Larence Keitt of St. Matthews, who sfered a mortal wond dring the Battle of Cold Harbor on Jne 1 and died near Richmond, Virginia, on Jne 2, The Calhon Conty Msem and Cltral Center is home to the Larence Keitt Collection, which featres clothing worn by Keitt, inclding the smoking jacket he wore dring his Eropean honeymoon in Larence Massillon Keitt, a proslavery politician who died from a mortal wond at the Battle of Cold Harbor, near Richmond, Virginia, was born and reared in St. Matthews.

4 E4 SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2015 Day 33 Revoltionary War oicer bilt Midway Plantation Little remains of the original Midway Plantation, which was bilt in 1785 by Col. William Rssell Thomson ( ). The present facade was added in abot The Thomson family was prominent in the commnity, playing a role in the military, political and social history of Soth Carolina and both Calhon and Orangebrg conties for more than 170 years. Day 34 Oakland Plantation once home to state senator William Sabb Thomson was the irst known occpant of Oakland Plantation, which according to local tradition was bilt prior to the Revoltionary War between 1750 and The Oakland Plantation hose featres a medim gable roof extending over the front porch and is spported by six sqare colmns. It also featres a wooden balstrade with latticework, added in the 1880s. The front entrance is lanked on either side by fll-length French windows, lengthened from mlti-paned windows. The rear portico has been enclosed and is sed as a sn porch. A wide central hall rns the length of the hose and is divided by a spindle work screen, added in the late 19th centry. Day 35 Good Hope Picnic nears centry mark A historical marker is located at the Good Hope Picnic gronds on S.C. Highway 267 between Lone Star and Elloree in Calhon Conty. The Good Hope Picnic was fonded in 1915 to mark the completion of the cotton harvest and is held every year on the second weekend of Agst. Its fonders wanted to provide local black farmers with a marketing otlet for their crops. Day 36 Lang Syne signiicant for agricltre, architectre Calhon Conty s Lang Syne Plantation has the distinction of recognition on the National Register of Historic Places for its contribtions to agricltre, literatre and architectre. The home and accompanying 65 acres were added to the National Register of Historic Places last year. The main hose was bilt in 1915 and designed by George Egene Lafaye, one of the state s most prominent and proliic architects of the early 1900s. The original home at Lang Syne brned in 1912 and a new one was bilt in Day 37 Cotton price slmped in Calhon Conty dring WWI Ernest Whetstone and John McLaghlin Jr., both of St. Matthews, were among hndreds in the area to answer America s call to arms in 1917 to join the battle as allies of England and France against Germany in World War I. The presence of German sbmarines nearly closed the ports of Erope to cotton imports from the U.S. and as a conseqence, the market price for cotton dropped to abot 6 cents per pond. Calhon Conty was predominantly an agricltral area, and cotton was its principal money crop. The low prices cased major concern and pessimism was rampant, according to St. Matthews resident J.A. Merritt in Jne Day 40 Derby, Preakness winner spent time at Webb Carroll Training Center William Webb Carroll Jr. is no stranger to horses, having grown p on a farm with broodmares and babies. After his father died nexpectedly in 1972, he tried his hand at diferent enterprises, from farming to rnning his own trcking company to managing a farm in Calhon Conty. Failing to ind contentment, he established Webb Carroll Training Center in the early 1980s. Throgh the years, the center has had an almni association of horses that have reached fame and fortne, inclding the likes of Kentcky Derby-Preakness winner War Emblem and other winners like Olee Wild, Tale of the Cat and Old Fashioned. Day 44 Sandy Rn Ltheran Chrch incorporated in 1788 The Sandy Rn Ltheran Chrch is one of the oldest Ltheran congregations in the state. It is believed to have been organized in Jacob Geiger settled in the Sandy Rn area of Calhon Conty abot He broght with him his Ltheran heritage and both Ltheran and Reformed (Calvinistic) Congregations were worshiping in the region prior to The irst hose of worship was bilt abot three miles north of the present location of the Sandy Rn Chrch on the west bank of the Congaree River, near the moth of Sandy Rn Creek. The settlers soon fond that they cold not live so near the river and moved inland. The chrch was incorporated in 1788 nder the name German Ltheran Chrch of Salem on Sandy Rn, bt it later came to be known as Sandy Rn Ltheran Chrch Day 41 St. Matthews street name honors longtime physician Dr. Harry C. Raysor listens as St. Matthews Mayor W. Gladden Smoak reads the annoncement of the name change of Railroad Avene to Harry C. Raysor Drive in April Calhon Conty residents illed the streets of downtown St. Matthews one Satrday in April The Prple Martin Festival Parade had barely gotten nderway when it came to a halt on Dantzler Street at the intersection with Railroad Avene. As the Essex antiqe car bearing Dr. Harry C. Raysor, honorary parade marshal, stopped in front of the jdges stand, St. Matthews Mayor W. Gladden Smoak spoke a few words in honor of the 87-year-old local physician. He then annonced, to the cheers of the crowd, that Railroad Avene was being renamed Harry C. Raysor Drive in honor of the doctor. Day 45 First Cameron settlers were immigrants At the base of the rolling clay hills of Calhon Conty, where the Lowcontry of Soth Carolina begins, is the town of Cameron. Throgh the years, Cameron has gained the reptation of being that pretty, little town halfway between Charleston and Colmbia on Highway 176. The Manchester and Agsta Railroad completed its irst line in 1894, and the town of Cameron was named for the condctor who broght the irst train throgh the commnity. W.W. McMillan was the irst railroad agent. Before it was incorporated on Jly 10, 1896, Cameron was considered a part of the For Holes commnity. There are families in Cameron today whose descendants lived in the area long before that. These early families came to America as German immigrants seeking freedom of religion. In the early 18th centry, the irst settlers arrived in Cameron from Germany via Zrich, Switzerland. Day 49 Calhon Conty home to 3 ginning companies Calhon Conty was the leader in cotton prodction at the trn of the 20th and 21st centries. The cotton gin (short for cotton engine) is a machine that qickly and easily separates the cotton ibers from the seeds, a job previosly performed by hand. The ibers are processed into cotton goods, and the seeds can be sed to grow more cotton or to prodce cottonseed oil. Today there are three cotton gins in Calhon Conty. Farmers Gin Co. LLC and Middling Cotton Company in St. Matthews and Cameron Cotton and Seed Company. Day 38 Totness was a cool spot The former town of Totness, which is lost to all bt time, was incorporated in 1850 and was a smmer village for plantation owners. It was located abot three miles from the Congaree River and abot 200 feet above the river s elevation. The origins of Totness as a village date to the late 1700s. It was formally incorporated as a town in 1850 by the General Assembly. Day 43 Fort Motte named for Revoltionary heroine The town of Fort Motte was established in In 1925 the town voted to srrender its charter. Once a thriving commnity, today all that remain is dear hearts and qiet streets. Day 39 St. Matthews man srvived Bataan, POW camp in WWII Capt. William P. Cain of St. Matthews is shown in a photo pblished in The State newspaper. The caption reads: For 26 months after the ighting on Bataan, (Cain) was a prisoner of the Japanese in a concentration camp on Lzon Island in the Philippines. Jst before the invasion of the Philippines, as several hndred of the prisoners were being moved aboard a Japanese transport to a secret hiding place, an American sb torpedoed the ship, and Capt. Cain was one of the 83 srvivors... Day 42 Cameron Lmber Co. fonded over 60 years ago Calhon Conty resident Heber Rast owned a planing mill, and conty resident Jesse Shirer had a portable mill. Shirer grew p in the lmber bsiness and in the late 1930s began rnning his own sawmills. Shirer and Rast both contined to se portable mills ntil 1948 when they bilt a stationary mill in Cameron. The two men had both been in the lmber bsiness since the mid 1940s and had forged a friendship. The two later formed a partnership and started Cameron Lmber Company at its crrent location. Day 46 Family bsiness lorishes in St. Matthews The family-owned bsiness known as Htto s Transmission Inc., with its famos signatre sign, is celebrating 60 years in operation. The transmission service company has gone from hydramatic transmissions to for- and ive-speed overdrive to compter-controlled transmissions. Throgh the years, the bsiness has expanded with the addition of several stall garages, vehicle lifts and oice space expansion. Fonder Pal Htto died two years ago, bt Htto s Transmission Inc. contines to be a family afair. Day 47 Jericho UMC fonded over 200 years ago Jericho United Methodist Chrch has strong, deep Methodist roots. The chrch is located at 11 Hocks Gin Road jst otside of Cameron. English-born Bishop Francis Asbry, often referred to as the father of Methodism in America, freqented the eastern areas of the newly formed nation in the late 1700s and early 1800s. According to chrch history, Asbry visited Jericho campgrond, which no longer exists, and stood on a stmp and preached the Gospel. According to a brief written history of Jericho, Asbry contined his ministry, determined to plant a permanent seed for the United Methodist Chrch in the Jericho commnity. In 1811, a congregation formed and began constrcting a chrch bilding. For years later, Jericho Meeting Hose was completed on for acres of land deeded to the chrch s trstees for $3. Constrction of the present-day chrch bilding began abot 1850 on that original tract of land. Day 48 Peant-bying stations emerge in goober gold rsh Cameron is home to two peantbying stations, Carolina Peant and Palmetto Peant. Both were started by local farmers. Later the name changed to St. Matthews in honor of the old St. Matthew s Parish, by an Act of the General Assembly, approved March 24, Robert Welch, attorney for the conty, left the apostrophe in St. Matthew s ot of the bill. Ths, the town name was oicially St. Matthews, withot the apostrophe.

Willie Grbbs started selling frnitre in the 1950s and decided in 1967 to start his own bsiness: Grbbs Frnitre and Appliances at 113 F.R. Hf Drive. For the past 48 years, the Grbbs family has opened its hearts and pocketbooks, and ofered eqipment for many commnity projects sch as the Calhon Conty Msem and Cltral Center, the Chamber of Commerce, Calhon Academy and Calhon Conty yoth baseball. Day 56 Oldest African- American chrch in Fort Motte Mont Pleasant Baptist Chrch was established on Ag, 17, Mont Pleasant Baptist Chrch fonding fathers were Harry Start, Anderson Keitt, Cdjo Cnningham, William McCrae, Isreal Cheeseboro and Caleb Bartley. These freed slaves were former residents of neighboring Goshen, Oakland, Belleville and Lang Syne plantations. Many chrch members came from the Bckhead Chrch in the Fort Motte Commnity. Tradition tells s it is the oldest African-American chrch in the Fort Motte area. Mont Pleasant Baptist Chrch keeps growing and is committed to doing good works, commnity ministries, and to remembering those who have gone before them who dared to make a diference. Always and most importantly, they are gratefl to God for their many blessings. Day 59 Inabinet won state crowns, 2nd rnner-p for Mrs. America Day 52 Msic teacher molded singers, piano players Beloved piano teacher Jlia Helen Garris taght piano and voice instrction to contless stdents in Calhon Conty and throghot the Midlands for decades, in the process earning national acclaim throgh the sccess of her stdents. The daghter of Jlia Crider Garris and Howard Franklin Garris, she lived in St. Matthews and was a lifelong piano teacher and voice instrctor. In 1985, the National Gild of Piano Teachers indcted her into the organization s Hall of Fame. Day 54 Camp Smmers and Manget ofers children s ministry, retreat Camp Smmers and Manget is sitated in a pecan grove on Chrch Camp Road of Highway 33 near Cameron. In 1944, David Keene Smmers and his wife donated 75 acres of land to the Eastern Conference of the Sothern Methodist Chrch for the prpose of creating a camp ministry. The Smmerses felt the need for a place for a children s ministry, where the pressres of an ever-changing world cold be relieved. Pam Inabinet was born in Colmbia in May 1950 to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Inabinet. She gradated from St. Matthews High School in First, she was crowned Miss Soth Carolina Teenager in Next she became Miss Calhon Conty in 1968, then Miss Colmbia, which led to her 1971 title of Miss Soth Carolina. After becoming a Mrs., Inabinet, of Calhon Conty s Sandy Rn commnity, was crowned Mrs. Soth Carolina in 1978 and went on to become second rnner-p for Mrs. America. Day 62 Stabler makes history as S.C. chief jstice John G. Stabler was born in October 1871 on his father s farm in Calhon Conty. From 1920 to 1926, he served in the state Senate ntil being elected to the Soth Carolina Spreme Cort in Stabler was elevated to chief jstice in 1935 pon the resignation of Egene S. Blease of Newberry. He was the irst Woford gradate at the time to become state chief jstice. Day 63 VFW post name honors soldier killed in Vietnam Staf Sgt. William J. Caldwell had a family history of leadership and service. On Jne 11, 1966, at the age of 28, Caldwell was killed by small arms ire. He was the irst St. Matthews soldier to die in the Vietnam War. Today, VFW Post on the Moore Road in St. Matthews is named in his honor. Day 65 Company brings forgotten architectre, wood back to life Encore Architectral Salvage Company works with cstom frnitre, doors, tbs and sinks, mantles and reclaimed wood. In addition, the company provides professional salvage of older homes, commercial bildings, farms and barns. The salvaged pieces are sed to spply contractors and individals with a large variety of niqe antiqe lmber and architectre. The trained crew careflly deconstrcts strctres by hand in order to salvage as mch of the resable materials as possible. This process diverts many items from being dmped into local landills. Day 66 Calhon Conty home to two lake landings The railroad trestle is a landmark visible from the landing at Low Falls. Calhon Conty is home to two boat landings: Low Falls and Stmp Hole. Low Falls Landing, at 958 Low Falls Road, Cameron, is near the pper end of Lake Marion along the Santee River. Stmp Hole Landing, at 18 Halter Cort, featres a free boat ramp along with boat slips. Day 57 Fillin station: Thornton s is trip back in time Richard Thornton s Texaco station has been arond since the late 1950s. John Adam Tretlen Day 55 Calhon Conty Veterans Memorial dedicated in 2010 War memorials are an example of the type of monment or memorial that a nation erects to remember and honor those who have foght and made the ltimate sacriice. Planning for Calhon Conty s Veterans Memorial began in April 2007 and grond-breaking ceremonies were held in May 2008 at the Calhon Conty Corthose Complex. The memorial opened and was dedicated in November Day 58 John Ford contines to give The marker at Metts Crossroads remembers John Adam Tretlen, who was a member of the irst Provincial Congress and was elected the irst governor of Georgia in He was a fervent believer in the ight for American independence. A price was pt on his head by the British government. While he was still living in Georgia, the Tories took over his property and brned his home. Becase of all of the threats to himself and his family, he was persaded by his friends to move to St. Matthews Parish, Soth Carolina. In April 1782, in the present-day area of Metts Cross Road, which is near the intersection of Belleville Road and Highway 176 in Calhon Conty, the Tories caght p with him and he was hanged, drawn and qartered. Day 64 Congaree bridge s history dates back to Bates Ferry The Soth Carolina Department of Transportation completed the replacement of the Bates Bridge in spring Dring the early 1900s, John M. Bates led several highway location projects. He personally inanced, bilt and managed Bates Ferry across the Congaree River between 1910 and Bates organized the Richland-Calhon Bridge Commission in 1921 and arranged inancing, secred the permit to span the river and spervised constrction of Bates Ferry Toll Bridge connecting Richland and Calhon conties. The bridge was completed in 1923 and served as a forernner of the present span carrying U.S. Highway 601 traic over the Congaree River. Day 67 Fairey family, cars together for a centry For more than 100 years, the Fairey family and cars jst seem to all roll together, generation after generation. Fast forward to 2015 and Fairey Chevrolet Cadillac is still going strong. For generations in the atomobile bsiness and the vision of the irst Fairey dealership is still remembered. A handshake and honesty is still given to each cstomer. SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2015 E5 Day 53 WPA project created Lake Inspiration What was once a marshy stagnant swamp eventally became part of a recreation park to serve as an inspiration in St. Matthews. Lake Inspiration, located of Raysor Road, was a project of the former federal Works Progress Administration, which was formed in 1935 and renamed the WPA in The former Calhon Conty Emergency Relief Administration worked to properly drain the swamp and trn it into a spot of beaty. The work was helped along with the se of WPA laborers and was completed among other projects, inclding the constrction of approximately 500 miles of commnity roads and the repair and remodeling of many school bildings. Officials and stakeholders ct the ribbon for the John Ford Commnity Center on Nov. 20, 2014, in St. Matthews. The old John Ford Middle School was sitting vacant for a nmber of years and there was a desire among Calhon Conty leaders to see it illed once again. In 2011, the Calhon Conty School District Board of Trstees gave the former school to Calhon Conty. The conty had expressed interest in restoring the facility as the John Ford Commnity Center. In November 2014, after a nearly $1 million overhal, the irst phase of renovating and pdating a portion of the school reached its completion. The center, located at 404 Agnes St. in St. Matthews, is toted as the largest of the conty s commnity centers. Day 61 Antley Springs In the early 1900s, abot one mile soth of St. Matthews, an area of springs was sed to frnish water for Antley Springs Bottling Works. The bottling works brochre states, Nestling among steep hills, shadowed by magniicent trees, the Springs are located in a nook that is at once a thing of beaty and joy forever. The water was reported to brst throgh a solid bed of rock, and bbbling health boils forth in wild abndance, as if in pre joy at being free again. The water from the springs was said to help with stomach trobles and disorders of the liver and kidneys. Day 68 Ulmer gave stdents gift of conidence Frederic Ulmer was born in Cameron in He was edcated in the Cameron schools, gradated from Frman University, and earned his master s degree in msic from Colmbia University in New York. He was well respected in the msic world and as a commnity leader and role model for yong people. He had a gift of inding talent in people that they never knew existed. He wold encorage everyone to give their best; to se the talent that was given to them. Not so they cold be the best, bt to give their best. C.F. Ulmer is well remembered for his prodctions of wonderfl Broadway shows he directed as a teacher at Orangebrg High School. The Calhon Conty Msem has a memorial fnd in his memory. The fnd provides scholarships and spports arts opportnities for Orangebrg and Calhon conties. Day 69 Calhon Contry Market s décor relects past It is not ncommon to walk into the Calhon Contry Market, 1304 Bridge Street, St. Matthews, and ind people with smiles on their faces reminiscing of childhood memories made in the old bilding. The market is srronded with old pictres, receipts, advertisements, copons, bills and antiqes from days long ago. Many of these were items fond in the attic and nder loor boards when the crrent owners, newlyweds Jonathan and Era Zeigler, began renovations in The market, which has had several owners in its lifetime, started ot as a Texaco Station in the early 1940s.

Let s go back in time. It is dring the Revoltionary War. The location wold be called the backcontry of present-day Soth Carolina. Women of Soth Carolina took sides and were often active dring the Revoltion. Emily Geiger was one of those women. She agreed to carry a message from Gen. Nathanael Greene to Gen. Thomas Smter. Day 75 St. Matthews Frnitre Company bilt on relationships St. Matthews Frnitre Co. Inc. started in 1977 as a weekend bsiness for the Thornton brothers. Bilt on a reptation of honesty and integrity, St. Matthews Frnitre Co. has been a family-owned and operated bsiness with small-town cstomer service since its doors opened. Day 71 St. Matthews Willie Big Joe Holman played in NFL Willie Joseph Big Joe Holman, football legend, was born in St. Matthews on Feb. 27, He began playing at the old John Ford High School and spent his college years as a Blldog standot at then-soth Carolina State College. In 1968, Holman was drafted in the NFL by the Chicago Bears. Day 73 Going green : The asparags years Day 72 Jewel of the Congaree was noted poet Nestled in Belah, the United Methodist Chrch cemetery in Sandy Rn, lies Calhon Conty s Jewel of the Congaree, Miss Inez E. Franck. This title came from the Palmetto poetry lovers who read her newspaper colmn, Singing in the Capitol. Franck attended Colmbia Commercial College in Colmbia and American University in Washington, D.C. Franck was born in She wrote her irst poem at the age of 8. Archibald Rtledge, poet lareate of Soth Carolina, taght and encoraged her. Asparags is no longer planted as a commercial crop in Calhon Conty. However, for a few years, those green crops helped to prodce green cash. In the 1920s, Calhon Conty needed something new to grow. Plant something else; yo grow too mch cotton were words that were spoken dring this time by Mike Watson. The irst asparags was broght into Calhon Conty by Watson s father-in-law, James M. Moss, who had watched asparags grow sccessflly in the Ridge Spring area of the state. Day 74 Stmp Hole Landing ish camp, restarant Dee Cowden and hsband David have owned Stmp Hole Landing ish camp and restarant for nearly 12 years. Dee says the friendly atmosphere and hospitality keep folks happy and cstomers retrning. She and David boght the ish camp in On the site there are 25 campsites and a private boat ramp. The main bilding featres an all-in-one bait shop, restarant and pool-playing area, all on the banks of Lake Marion. They are famos for their red catish stew and a variety of sandwiches. Day 76 Prickett is a jack-of-all-trades, and a master of many Sccess seems to follow Mackie on and of the race track. Mackie Prickett was a natral. Whatever came his way he managed with pride and sccess, whether in the academic arena, on horseback or on the ball ield. Mackie grew p arond horses. In 1944 at the age of 10, his debt as a jockey was at the Orangebrg Conty Fair riding Mad Kiss, which was owned by his father, McIver Prickett. Mackie is an almns of the University of Soth Carolina. An all-atlantic Coast Conference qarterback at USC in the mid-1950s, his otstanding play was later remembered when he was voted into the niversity s Athletic Hall of Fame. Today Mackie Prickett works daily as a pharmacist at Horse Necessities, Inc. in St. Matthews, or can be fond at home on his farm with his wife, Shan. Day 78 Teresa Ginyard Hair passionate in mission to preserve history Bethel AME Chrch is located one block from the Calhon Conty Corthose. The chrch has a rich history, and Teresa Ginyard Hair is very passionate in her mission to preserve that history. Her indings tell not only abot Bethel AME, bt early African-American chrches, schools and teachers. She has made a large graph with the names of early African-American schools in Calhon Conty where she has placed the names of teachers and schools. Day 81 Fort Motte Oyster Roast drew visitors from near and far Day 77 Baxter s Little Red Atomobile played role in birth of conty Day 79 Calhon msem ofers chance to see real weasel The yarn weasel is a wooden piece of eqipment sed in days gone by to wind and measre a skein of yarn. While mothers were bsy cooking, cleaning and tending to their yongest child, an older child of 5 to 7 was able to easily operate the weasel, thereby saving the mother time and efort. The Calhon Conty Msem and Cltral Center is pleased to have a weasel and large spinning wheel on display in St. Matthews. Althogh not a photo of The Little Red Car, this atomobile was typical of the time period. In 1905, George Athor Baxter prchased a Little Red Atomobile (later to be called Red ). He thoght it wold be a grand time to indce the commnity to get rid of the horse and bggy and se a gas bggy. It did not seem like it wold be mch diferent to drive an atomobile. What Baxter had not conted on was that St. Matthews was not qite ready for this big change. Day 80 Msem displays show range of wedding dress styles The selection of the dress has always been a major part of weddings. However, the dress of yesteryear was not what is expected today. A new dress was made if one cold afford the cost. The dress cold be plain and simple and often was not made of white cloth. It was common to have a dress made in order that it cold be resed. Like everything, it was time and money. The Calhon Conty Msem and Cltral Center has a wide range of wedding dresses from the early to mid-20th centry as part of its collection. The Fort Motte Oyster Roast attracted more than 2,000 visitors at its height and was called Soth Carolina s biggest event after the Carolina-Clemson game and the Carolina Cp. The chrch women started with $200 from a bazaar and plans for a big oyster roast soon began. Expanding on the Hane family tradition and sing the Hane Cannery, they were of and rnning. The Hane families were wonderfl members of the St. Matthews Parish Episcopal Chrch. The oyster roast attracted statewide attention. TV and newspapers added pblicity, and in a short time after that irst chrch oyster roast in 1953, their $200 trned into $4,000. The inspiration from these women on a mission, and 11 men, was nbelievable. The cost of a ticket the irst year was $1.25. The reqirements and hands for hosting sch an event grew, and soon other chrches, family and friends throghot the conty came forth. In honor of the St. Matthews Parish Episcopal Chrch s 250-year celebration, the Hane Family will host an Oyster Roast in November in the Cannery. Day 84 Brown served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam If it were possible to look p the name Charlie Brown in the dictionary, yo wold find the following words to describe this great man: God and contry, love and honor, Sothern, tall in state, physically strong, impeccable manners, kind heart, beatifl eyes, well connected and honest. When he smiles, the whole world smiles, it has been said of Charles Brown of St. Matthews. The U.S. Army slogan, Be All That Yo Can Be, well describes Brown, retired MSG, U.S. Army. Withot qestion, when he speaks everyone listens. Day 82 BP Mini Mart ofers good taste Walk into the BP Mini Mart and yo ll nearly always see Willette Cheeseboro hard at work in The Deli. If yo re hngry, this is the place to go most any time of day between 6 in the morning and 8 in the evening. Willette says she delights in seeing the same loyal cstomers each and every day, determined not to miss their daily dose of chicken livers, gizzards, special onion sasage rolls and hand-ct fried potatoes. Day 85 Bilding hosing Short Stop once served as cannery Rhett Taber prchased the property for the St. Matthews Short Stop in 1988 from the school system. Bilt in the 1940s by Cecil Smoak, the bilding was once owed by the Calhon Conty Pblic School System and was sed as a cannery. At that time, the school district allowed the pblic to come in and se the facilities for their personal canning. The cannery has been transformed into a convenience store with a food conter that now serves breakfast and lnch. Day 83 Sandy Rn s bsiness district The 1500 block of Old State Road in the Sandy Rn Commnity ofers a variety of lavors and services for locals and passersby. Becky Rcker owns and operates Sandy Rn Florist and Katie s Sandwich Shop at 1576 Old State Road. Both the lorist and deli are nder one roof. Jst a few yards away at 1584 Old State Road, Jigesh Patel owns and operates the Sandy Rn Grill and Stop and Go Gas Station. The establishment was known for years as Pete Tcker s Store, bt it changed from that abot six years ago. Day 86 George and Johnnie Tilley: Calhon Conty s own Romeo and Jliet George Tilley was born Jan. 25, 1897; Johnnie Fogle was born Jan. 9, The qiet little town of Cameron is where George and Johnnie met and fell in love. The world had Romeo and Jliet; Calhon Conty had George and Johnnie. On Jan. 7, 1941, George was sworn in as Calhon Conty s forth sherif. Tilley wold hold this position ntil he was shot on April 30, 1947, while transporting a prisoner.

First bilt as Bll s Esso Station in 1957, farmers, locals, children on bikes and travelers wold stop by to by gas, a cold Coke, a pack of nabs or catch p on the news. Over the years, the bilding has increased in size, new signs have been added and ownership has changed hands. No longer will yo ind fll service on the otside, bt yo will still ind fll service on the inside. The station has a new name: Cameron Filling Station. Day 88 Potter shared niqe skills in Calhon Conty One of the best known Catawba Indian potters, Sara Ayers signed art is among the most soght after by collectors. Born in 1919 on the reservation near Rock Hill, Sara later moved to West Colmbia where she became a proliic prodcer of traditional and neo-traditional Catawba Indian pieces. Assisted by hsband and fellow potter Foxx, Sara dg Catawba River clay, which she trned into ine pottery, firing it in a pit in her backyard. Sara received considerable recognition in her lifetime inclding the Soth Carolina Folk Heritage Award. She is qoted as saying, Pottery is my life. It has helped me throgh some of life s rocky times. Two of her works are displayed at the Calhon Conty Msem and many can be fond in msems and private collections throghot the contry. Day 89 Two generations have dished p good cooking in same spot Tcked away of the main streets of St. Matthews is a cte little place called Shler s Seafood Restarant. When yo step inside yo know yo are going to be greeted with a smile. When yo leave yo know yo will have had something good to eat. Shrimp, crab, londer, Virginia perch, an assortment of bone-ish, croaker and spots are on the men. Herman says he learned everything he knows abot cooking from his parents. Open Thrsday-Satrday. It s not fancy, bt Shler s Seafood Restarant sre is darling. Day 92 Decades of dining in St. Matthews A St. Matthews dining tradition is heading toward two decades in bsiness. Mohamed Hlobi opened Town & Contry Restarant in 1998 in a former downtown department store. Whoever comes in here, they sort of know s, Hlobi said, describing Town & Contry as a family bsiness for him, his family and the people of St. Matthews. A short ride from downtown is Calhon Contry Clb, which is not only a poplar spot for golfers; it is a morning gathering place for senior citizens who partake in a Sothern breakfast and good conversation. Day 90 Jewish families contribted to Calhon Conty s history St. Matthews, originally called Lewisville, attracted Jewish families. Six years after the town was incorporated, 19 Jewish residents lived in the area. M. Jarecky, Loryea, Rich, Moritz of Germany settled in Charleston before coming to St. Matthews. Other names inclding Lewisohn, Wetherhorn, Jacobson, Elosser, Pearlstine, Cohen, Yelmon and Savitz were all prominent in Calhon Conty. They all owned a bsiness in St. Matthews. Each family ofered mch to the commnity, and the commnity had mch to ofer to them. Nineteen Jewish families came to the Calhon Conty area, and of those families, all are gone with the exception of one. Each broght a special spirit of giving, working and commnity. He was wise beyond his years, loved by all, and a fair person in bsiness and in his personal life. The establishment was formerly known as Lcy s. Randy and Sharon Kornegay started remodeling the convenience store and dinette in It s a work in progress, Randy Kornegay said. He said the bsiness is called Or Store becase, we want people to feel like it s their store, too. Meanwhile, another poplar bsiness today is also operating nder a new name. The service station and restarant formerly known as Brakeield s was once the sole spot on Interstate 26 in Calhon Conty where travelers cold get a home-cooked meal. Today, it s the Exxon No. 5 and it s owned by North American Petrolem. Its in-store restarant has the lavor of the past while ofering a taste of the new. On display at the Calhon Conty Msem, yo will ind a niqe Plver chewing gm machine. This large, wall-monted gm dispenser is in its original condition; the Plver gm machine is a beatifl early piece of Americana. A.O. Rickenbacker Store in Cameron was the home to this special machine for many years. Day 96 Story explains origins of the Devil s Track The Devil s Track is located on private property and is not open to the pblic. Legend has it that the track was ct by the Devil himself. Clarence Larrymore was wonded twice and honored for his heroism in Korea. He donated his medals to the Calhon Conty Msem. Jst ask anyone in town abot Clarence Larrymore and in their minds they will qickly see a smiling face. Binkey is his nickname, and this writer remembers him well: a commnity leader, town bilding inspector, an American hero. Korea and the men who faithflly served are often forgotten. Larrymore was one of many who prodly served dring that time. Day 97 Morris family spreads news for three generations Some things in Calhon Conty have not changed since Those who live in Calhon Conty, srronding areas and even ot of state rely on getting or newspaper weekly. It is personal, and they do bsiness the old-fashion way, one paper at a time. For the past 86 years, three generations of the Morris family have devoted their lives to pblishing. Day 99 Cameron s Spiers played for Clemson, Brewers, Mets, Astros Bill Spiers of Cameron began his professional baseball career with the Milwakee Brewers in He was drafted in the irst rond, the 13th pick. From , he played inield with the Brewers before going to the New York Mets. Day 100 After 100 days, msem still has history to share The Calhon Conty Historical Commission/Msem started ot in 1952 behind the old library with two rooms and big dreams. Life was simple then.
