They will start a study f Eph. 1 and gain sme thelgical vcabulary. Suggestins fr teaching: This is the first thelgy lessn in ur study n Paul & his teaching. The suggestins belw will allw yu t apprach Ephesians SLOWLY and cntextually, and prceed SLOWLY thrugh the first half f the first chapter. I recmmend that yu read the passages alud yurself fr the class, because sme f the thelgical vcabulary will be unfamiliar. Review f vcab & cncepts Wh is Paul, and why shuld we listen t him? (Explain abut his authrity as apstle, and that we are t view his letters in the NT as Gd-breathed.) Students may take a cpy hme if they wish. Please explain what this is: a set f dcuments written in the 1600 s by English clergymen, which sums up the teachings f the Bible. It is NOT smething frm Gd which we are suppsed t read in additin t the Bible: it s a helpful tl fr understanding what the Bible is saying. Shw the different parts & their purpses. Give examples f big picture questins that Christians shuld think abut, such as, Are peple generally gd, generally bad, r a mix? and What was Gd s plan f salvatin? and What happens when a persn is saved? Explain that these questins are answered in the Bible in varius places, but the WS bring all f the ideas tgether s we can see the answers mre clearly. Read and discuss: G with the Shrter Catechism this time, as many f Q138 as yu have time fr. Give plenty f time fr Q&A. Ask students t give a ballpark idea f where in the Bible ne culd g t answer sme f the questins. Yu re welcme t lk up any verses as yu g alng. Electin is likely t be a sticky issue. Gal: In this lessn students will review Paul s relatinship with the church at Ephesus, the blessings f Eph. 1:1-14 and the cntent f Paul s prayer in Eph. 1: They will review sme questins frm the WSC that relate t the fall f man, and will begin a study f Eph. 2:1-10. Suggestins fr teaching: Please dn t rush r try t finish n time. Cmprehensin is key, nt amunt cvered. Yu shuld read the Eph. 2 selectin tday, as it will be new. Times are given nly as a general guideline. Part One: Review (15-20 mins) Paul at Ephesus Discuss Paul s relatin with the Ephesian church, as well as the spiritual climate f Ephesus. (See earlier lessns fr details.) Ephesians 1 Invite students t read alud Eph. 1:1-14 in shrt sectins. Call attentin t the spiritual blessings named by Paul. WSC This was just intrduced last week. Be sure t remind them what it is (see Lessn 9). Ask Q1 befre pening the bk. See if anybdy remembers, then check. Encurage memrizing it. Read Q Take yur time, check fr understanding. The theme here is the Fall & Sin, which will be reinfrced in ur reading in Eph. 2. Part Tw: Ephesians 2:1-10 (15-20 mins) Read Eph. 2:1-3. List wrds n bard describing what peple are like withut Gd. Nte that Paul includes himself n that list, in his frmer way f life, and we shuld, t. Read Eph. 2:4-7. Discuss Gd s mtivatin and the gifts he has given. List these n the bard, t. Read Eph. 2:8-9. Discuss cnversin experiences, hw these dn t happen in a ckie-cutter, predictable way. Invite peple t share hw they came t knw the Lrd. Keep bringing them back t the truth that even if they felt they had cnsciusly made a decisin fr Christ, the very ability t believe was given t them by Gd. Reinfrce this by rereading 2:1 yu were DEAD. Read Eph. 2:10. Discuss what we are saved FOR nt just heaven, but gd wrks prepared in advance. Discuss what these culd be. (N limits! It s nt just religius wrk!)
