1 THE MESSENGER November 2017 COVENANT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH P.O. BOX CELANESE ROAD ROCK HILL, SC Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. I must confess this past month of October has simply flown by and when speaking with Lisa about a subject for this November newsletter I was at a loss. So many topics to cover, so much information to share. Lisa saved the day when she came into the office and said, DC! It s Thanksgiving. That s easy. Talk about Thanksgiving. And so here we are with some interesting facts I didn t know. Both the United States and Canada celebrate the agricultural harvest and other blessings of our lives with an annual feast day in the fall. These annual feast days are not only festive celebrations, but a time to recall our responsibilities as stewards of this great world in which we live. George Washington declared the first national day of Thanksgiving in In 1939 Congress fixed the date of Thanksgiving in the United States as the fourth Thursday in November. Harvest festivals of course, are found in agricultural communities across the globe and throughout history. Three Jewish festivals-passover, Pentecost and Tabernacles-had connections to agricultural events. The first at the time of new births in the animal flocks; the second at the harvest of grain; and the third at the time of new wine. The Puritan settlers in their celebration of 1621 retained harvest festival tradition of prayer, feasting and games. Our current day celebrations include these traditions, though the games are now watched rather than played. The second aspect of Thanksgivinggratitude for a specific event is also widespread in the human experience. Throughout the middle ages, days of special thanksgiving were held to praise God for deliverance from famine, plague or war. Today we celebrate Thanksgiving as a National Holiday. We celebrate the feast as Christians living in a particular country. This awareness should evoke a sense of stewardship in our celebration of Thanksgiving. We give thanks to God for all our blessings realizing that such blessings demand responsible use of every resource to do God s will. Thanksgiving invites us to actions of remembrance, gratitude and stewardship. Let these be the hallmarks of our celebration, the hallmarks of our lives in Christ Jesus. Let us look upon this time with hearts filled with gratitude for what we have and not longings for things we do not have. Let us go about this time in the life of our families and our church with gratitude and thanksgiving. Grace and peace to you all, DC Horne

We encourage everyone to bring your favorite dish to enjoy a meal as well as fellowship with others. Again this year, the Covenant Women s fundraiser will be a yard sale on Saturday, November 4. As always, private spaces will be available on the parking lot and will be pre-sold for $25 each. Rachel Cook, Chris Cordell, and Diana DeCarlis will be setting up the merchandise in the Fellowship Hall on Friday, November 3, and will welcome help! On the day of the sale, we will need volunteers to man the tables from 8:00 a.m. til 1:00 p.m., preferably in two-hour shifts. Additionally we will be selling barbecue sandwiches on a take-out basis, so we will need volunteers in the kitchen as well. Unfortunately Pam East will be unable to manage the sale this year due to the loss of her mother-in-law. But if we all pull together, we can have a successful event. Please let us count on your help. If you would like to manage/organize, or take a shift at the sale, or serve to-go boxes, whatever you can do is much appreciated. Just call the church office, send an or contact a member of the PW Coordinating Team. Good things are done with the money we raise each year your donations and your time can make that happen! Thank you! Operation Christmas Child: Shoe boxes will be due Sunday, November 12. We look forward to collecting many boxes.
