1 The Kansas Sonshine Volume 75: Number 4 SUMMER 2018 LUTHERAN WOMEN S MISSIONARY LEAGUE KANSAS DISTRICT How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns. (Isaiah 52:7) Dear LWML Sisters-in-Christ! How joyful it was to be with you in convention! We were: inspired in worship through God s Word in messages delivered by Pastor Hobson and Pastor Grimm; encouraged in the Bible study samplers and leadership development sessions led by District leaders; uplifted in hymns and songs of praise and in listening to God s message through the beautiful music; prayerful in the Prayer Nook, during the Prayer Labyrinth, and in Scriptural Journaling; introspective during the Beautiful Feet Bible study led by Deb Burma; humored by M & M s (Mary and Marlene and Elise) and the ever-entertaining Jan Struck; challenged to learn more about missions in the interest sessions and the exhibit hall; motivated in selecting new mission grants, God s Gracious Gift Fund Grants and in electing new officers; enlightened by Elizabeth Ahlman at the Christian Life Breakfast; fed wonderful food for our bodies and life-giving spiritual food for our souls; grateful for the generous outpouring for Gifts of the Heart, servant events, worship and thank offerings; thankful for the willing servants on all the committees and the help behind the scenes; and HUMBLED by God s 75 years of blessings upon the LWML Kansas District. But we cannot rest. We cannot stop because we made it to 75 years. As thankful as we are to those who have gone before us and who blazed the trail for LWML in Kansas, the work is not finished. We are called to announce peace, bring good news, announce salvation to all whom we encounter. As we reflect on Beautiful Feet, how does this picture make you feel? I honestly can t stop looking at it at these strong, beautiful feet. It makes me uncomfortable, and I have dozens of questions. How I want to grab an excess pair of shoes (or 10) out of my closet and be able to hand them to this person. Has this person EVER owned a pair of new shoes? How it motivates me to strive to help others! Although we may not see people in our Kansas cities and towns wearing plastic bottle sandals, we may see children whose shoes are too tight or people who do not have an adequate coat or enough food. We read about ways to send supplies to Orphan Grain Train or Lutheran World Relief. We support our local food banks. The need for children s school supplies is just around the corner. Let this picture get you out of your comfort zone and to look for ways for your society to serve others. Look for new mission possibilities or people to help. Involve the youth and young women: they have a heart for helping people! Our opportunities to SERVE and to bring His Good News to others are unlimited. Beautiful Feet: Where are YOU going? In His Grace and service, President Brenda Piester president@kansaslwml.org

2 Counselor s Corner Pastor Rocco Mallardi Junior Pastoral Counselor, KS LWML The state of Kansas always amazes me at this time of the year. I have never seen anything like baseball season here in Kansas in little towns like Oswego, to medium towns like Hays, to the big city of Kansas City! It seems that it doesn t matter if it s the little league or the big league, the entire state get baseball fever. All across our land every afternoon, evening, and night the ball fields come alive with the sights, sounds, and smells of the game. From the bright lights that make the darkened field aglow as the midday sun, to the smell of freshly cut grass, to the sound of the cracking of the bat. Our state comes alive at this time of the year, in ways that it does not at any other time of the year. It is at this time of the year, that we as Christians are given a unique opportunity as both parents and children are thrown onto teams with people that we may or may not know; placed alongside others who may or may not know Jesus or attend church. At the ballfield we are given the time with others, either in the dugout or on the bleachers, to talk about the game as well as all sorts of other things. As you do, I would encourage you to talk about Jesus. Take the time to invite them to come to hear about Jesus, as you invite them to your local LCMS church. The LWML has always been about Lutheran Women in Mission and this is an easy way that you can share Jesus with others right where you are, as you invite them to come and see. Our theme verse states, How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, Your God reigns. " (Isaiah 52:7) I personally am thrilled to come alongside you, as the Junior Pastoral Counselor of the LWML as we work together to share the Good News about Jesus everywhere. 7 CARING SERVICE Laura Hunter VP of Caring Service Thanks from the Caring Service Committee! What an exciting time we had at Convention watching the room fill with items for the in-gathering projects! Many thanks go to those who generously contributed grocery items for the food pantry at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Christian Soup Kitchen Ministry. Also thank you for the generous contributions of eyeglasses for MOST Ministries, materials for the Lutheran Layman s League state fair booth, and trimmed stamps for the Texas District Stamporee project. And last, but not least, thanks to the volunteers who spontaneously stopped by and offered their assistance in the in-gathering room! Your help was very much appreciated. We owe a big thanks to Thrivent Financial for approving Action Teams for the purchase of all of the needed materials for three of our five servant events. This included the beans and rice we packaged for Mission Southside s food ministry in Olathe, the materials for the MOST Ministries witness bracelets, and the fleece for the blankets for Phil s Friends ministry. And thank you to all of the ladies who stopped by to work on the servant events at convention! Totals for all of our ingathering items and servant events can be found in the Sonshine post-convention issue. Go take a look. The generosity always overwhelms! We tried a new servant event at the convention in April! The ladies had lots of fun learning to make the plarn (plastic yarn) and then crocheting the plarn into sleep mats. Making these plastic mats has been tackled by a handful of societies already, but this project has a real opportunity to grow in our Kansas District! The project is virtually free to take on (uses plastic grocery sacks) and is also good for the environment (keeps those pesky bags out of landfills and oceans). Orphan Grain Train accepts the completed mats. Additionally, Marcia Merrick (homeless ministry in the KC area for whom we make the decorated lunch sacks) would love to have some to distribute to the homeless she serves as well. She mentioned to me that none have been donated to her before, but that the homeless know about them and have asked her if she has any to give them. Any completed mats for Marcia can be given to any district representative at any zone rally or district function (KAOL, Christian Life Retreat, or Convention) and we will make sure Marcia receives them. To learn more about how to make these mats, written instructions are on the Kansas District website on the Caring Service page. Also, I would encourage you to go to youtube.com. If you search for the words plastic bag sleep mats for the homeless literally hundreds of videos will pop up, all done by ladies who are making these and wanted to share their knowledge on how to with others. Try out several different videos (some are better than others) and try to make a mat that includes the strap also made of plarn. That makes it easy for the user to sling across their shoulder and carry. The Kansas Sonshine Page 7

8 CHRISTIAN LIFE Alison Lehman VP of Christian Life It is a privilege to begin serving the LWML KS District as VP of Christian Life Committee. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths. I pray for the Lord s guidance and focus as I begin this new work and humbly accept and challenges that arise. It is exciting to be serving with a wonderful group of women. First of all, I would like to thank the outgoing Christian Life Committee Members who served so faithfully over the last several years: Elaine Engleman, VP; Carol Bauck; Amanda Williams; and Pastor Jay Hobson. God s continued blessings to you all in your service to Him! 9 ORGANIZATIONAL CHRISTIAN RESOURCES LIFE Elaine Engelman VP of Organizational Resources WELCOME to the newest addition of the Organizational Resources page written by Bitsy Bylaw. Questions regarding LWML at any level covering a variety of topics will be featured. If you have a question, don t hesitate to ask Bitsy; you can reach her at resources@kansaslwml.org. Dear Bitsy: I recently moved to a new town and went to visit the LCMS church there. I was invited to attend an LWML meeting, which I was glad to do. At the meeting I was told I was welcome to join the group as soon as I filled out my application for membership and paid my $5.00 dues. In the congregation I came from we told people that any woman who was a member of an LCMS congregation was a member of LWML and could participate in any events she was able to attend. Who is right? Signed, Confused Dear Confused: The Kansas District Bylaws state a woman who is a communicant member of an LCMS congregation is eligible for membership in a society. The LWML mission statement says The mission of the Lutheran Women s Missionary League is to assist each woman of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world. We are all women in mission and serve our Lord as we are able with the gifts we have been given. Many local societies choose to ask for an offering at their meetings to help defray expenses or to support a local mission project, but there should be no applications or dues associated with joining an LWML society. Serve with Gladness, Bitsy Dear Bitsy: I attended the LWML Kansas District convention in Hutchinson and it was great! I was disappointed in the Concordia Publishing House (CPH) display, though. Usually they have a lot more items to choose from. Do you know what is going on there? Signed, Just Curious Dear Just Curious: There were many of the convention goers that mentioned your same concern, so the District Executive Committee compiled the evaluations and sent them to CPH. The Public Relations department of CPH contacted Elaine Engelman, Vice President of Organizational Resources, and explained their position on the display. The company as a whole is streamlining the displays they take to all events, trying to make them more in line with the mission statement of CPH, which states Concordia Publishing House is the publishing arm of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. It exists for the purposes of strengthening and aiding member congregations in their proclamation of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ and working in partnership with the agencies and congregations of the Synod to provide publishing services. On their behalf, Concordia Publishing House will develop, produce, market and distribute products and services that are faithful to the Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions and which will effectively serve such proclamation to people throughout the world. All to the Glory of God. CPH will carefully consider which events to attend in the future, but they do not plan to need more than three tables at any event. What this means for Kansas District LWML events is that there will no longer be cards, jewelry or toys available; those items can only be purchased online or in a Christian book store. CPH will continue to bring the most current Bible studies, Bible commentaries, and Christian books for readers of all ages. If you have suggestions as to authors you would like to have represented or studies that you would be interested in having on display, please contact me and I will pass along that information to them for you. Serve with Gladness, Bitsy The Kansas Sonshine Page 9

10 SOCIETY NEWS St. Luke's Society of Manhattan did a Sick Child kit for the local hospital's pediatric unit. For this project, we partnered with the American Heritage Girls (AHG); a new troop at our Church. The AHG troop got to learn a little bit about LWML and what we do. They helped assemble the kits. It was a lot of fun involving these young ladies on this project. October 4-6 is the annual Pumpkin Patch craft show in Manhattan KS. The St. Luke's Society will be selling baked goods and collecting money for Good Shepherd. Mark your calendars, we would love to see you! Submitted by: Julie Hatesohl Time for fellowship will be observed by the Mt. Calvary (Wamego) LWML Society this summer. Society members are hosting their annual salad supper for women of the congregation in June. Pastor Jim Price will be our guest speaker telling us his interesting "life story". The July meeting will be a celebration of Christmas in July, complete with the Christmas story, as well as Christmas music, decorations and treats. A white elephant gift exchange will be held. The traveling white elephant appears each year to be passed on to a new home. Submitted by: Carolyn Stutzman Our Ladies Circle of Zion-Chanute meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Since the May meeting was on May 1 we decided to make May baskets and deliver them to our congregation s shut-ins. The society president gathered wallpaper sample books and artificial flowers from the church resource room and fourteen baskets were made for shut-ins. We also made a few baskets to share with neighbors and 30 small baskets to give to the staff members of the local school that the church prays for and spiritually supports. After a light potluck salad luncheon, the list of shut-ins was divided by those present to deliver on our way home. We had a great time reminiscing as we made the baskets, and sharing some time with members we had not seen for awhile at church. Submitted by: Elaine Engelman Does the 2019 LWML Convention in Mobile seem a long way off? Not so, if you are making the Kansas banner for the convention processional! Please SUBMIT 2019 BANNER IDEAS with a sketch or drawing to President Brenda by MAIL at th Rd., Coats, KS 67028, or by to president@kansaslwml.org BY SEPTEMBER 1. You may not use the convention logo on your banner, but do base your design on the convention Theme: "In Praise to the LORD!" and Scripture Verse: Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations (1 Chronicles 16:23 24a). The Kansas Sonshine Page 10
