High Plains Zone will be hosting the 2018 Wyoming District LWML Convention in Cheyenne, Wyoming. That s only a year and a half from now but plans are already underway and we will keep you informed of all the details of that event. Please plan to attend! Lord of the Harvest was the theme for the High Plains Zone Fall Rally, held Sept. 25, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wheatland, Wyoming. Twentynine ladies and two pastors were in attendance. Pastor Winter of Trinity led our devotions. Pastor Mark Maas presented an informative program explaining about the training of Lutheran pastors in Sierra Leone and Liberia, Africa. It was decided that the offering taken during the Rally should be given to the Pastors who are traveling this year to Africa. Several LWML members performed a Western style skit, inviting all attendees to come to the 2018 Wyoming LWML District Convention in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Jeannie Hockersmith was installed as the new President of the Zone and Delores Lund was installed as the interim Treasurer by Pastor Maas. Our Savior Lutheran Church in Cheyenne will be the location for the High Plains Zone LWML Spring Joyshop to be held on April 29,

VP of Human Care Debbie Lee Special thanks go out to the YWR delegates for their work with the 2016 Chadron convention arranging the Gifts from the Heart ingathering. They were a tremendous help in sorting, counting and boxing the many contributions of shoes, cleaning supplies, bedding, pillows, food, duffel bags, hygiene items and quilts. The monetary donation that was given to DOVES totaled $ Thanks be to God! The Wind River Lutheran mission located in Fort Washakie is in need of monetary support and requests that offerings be sent to the Wyoming District Office in Casper; Checks may be made out to Wind River Lutheran Mission. The women of the Wyoming District have been very giving to this mission, and it remains the only ethnic mission within the district. Thank you for the prayers that Pastor Greg Sonnenschein will bring the strong name of Jesus to many on the Wind River Indian reservation. From Our Senior Pastoral Counselor Jais H. Tinglund A Special Year Coming Up - Though Strangely Special We have a special year coming up, with the National LWML Convention in Albuquerque, and with the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Of course one could wonder what is so special about these two events. After all, there is a National LWML Convention every other year. And those years in which we do not have a National LWML Convention are special years, also, because we then have our District LWML Convention. Of course, our District is somewhat more involved in the Albuquerque Convention than in most National Conventions. Obviously, that must make it somewhat more special to some of us. And one could say something similar about the Anniversary of the Reformation. We celebrate that every year in our churches. This year we celebrate the 499th Anniversary. And unless the Lord comes in glory before then, we shall celebrate the 501st Anniversary of the Reformation in Well, I suppose that even if the Lord does come in glory before then, we might very well continue to celebrate the important event that the Reformation was: that the truth of God, so long forgotten in His Church, was given back to His Christians, and His precious Gospel of forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Him in His glory being won for sinners, fully and completely, with what the Son of God has done for us in His life and His death, and given to sinners, fully and completely, and freely and for nothing, out of His goodness and mercy alone, and for no other reason whatsoever, with His Word and promise. It is no wonder that this is so special a celebration; after all, the Reformation was an important event in God's history with His people. And the celebration of the Reformation is a celebration of what the faith is all about, and our life with God. Still, in a strange way, there is something strange about this celebration being so special a celebration. In most of our churches we celebrate the Reformation on the last Sunday in October, which is the Sunday closest to the 31st of October, the Anniversary for the Luther's 95 Theses Against the Trade of Indulgences being posted on the door of the Castle Cathedral in Wittenberg in There is something strange about that. Not only because it is questionable whether or not Luther actually nailed his Theses 3

on the door himself, and not only because Luther himself at that time had not actually yet come to that realization of what the Gospel is which is the heart of the Reformation, and of the Lutheran faith, and the Christian faith. There is also something strange about the Anniversary of the Reformation being so special a celebration because the rediscovery of God's precious truth of salvation is really what each and every one of our worship services is all about, each and every Sunday; because every Lutheran worship service is really a rediscovery of the forgotten Gospel. The assurance of being right with God is not one we sinners can just constantly have; not in our own hearts and minds. Constantly our sinful nature leads us to look away from the truth of God and seek assurance of being right with God in our own goodness and godliness instead; and we are either lead into despair or into the false assurance of sinful pride and ungodly arrogance. That is why we constantly need to be turned away from our ungodly obsession with our own goodness and godliness, and have the eyes of our hearts turned instead to the goodness of God given to us in the Gospel. And that is what Lutheran preaching does, and Lutheran teaching, and Lutheran worship - always; on the last Sunday in October as on all other Sundays; in 2017 as every other year. This is what makes every Sunday so special, and every day of our life with the Lord. If all goes well, it will also be what makes the National Convention in Albuquerque so special, and everything else we do in the LWML. Nevertheless, let us joyfully count the celebration the 500th anniversary of the Reformation as a special celebration. And the 501st. And let us joyfully celebrate every Sunday, and every other time the Word of God is spoken to us, the glorious mystery of our salvation, and the glorious goodness and grace of God, that He gives His salvation to us, fully and completely, and freely and for nothing, as His reward to us, not for our own goodness, but rather for His own, and the good that He Himself has done. Sincerely Pastor Jais H. Tinglund South Big Horn Lutheran Parish A Word from the Communications Chair Please send any and all information for upcoming events in your Zone or Society to me smileyscheel@hotmail.com so I can add them to our website or the next newsletter. 5 Yellowstone Zone Report Linda Fischer The Spring Joy Workshop was held Saturday, April 23 rd, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran in Powell. There was 32 in attendance. Pastor Wisroth led the opening devotion and led us into the Bible Study that was based upon 2Cor-1:3-7 and was entitled The Lord of Rings. It is about visiting people in crisis and how far into the rings we should venture, or if we must just stay outside of the rings and pray for that person. It was developed by Susan Silk and called The Ring Theory It was a very interesting Bible Study and made us think about giving advice to our friends and family and whether we should or shouldn t depending upon where our position in the rings is. Gwen Walker led us in Building our Body, Mind, and Spirit, which was an exercise routine let by verses from God s word. Danyne Six, Wyoming District President gave us information on the District Convention in Chadron and said that the convention should be the most fun ever and encouraged our attendance. She also told us that the 2017 National Convention has been changed from Salt Lake City, UT to Albuquerque, New Mexico with the theme, Jesus Christ Above All. We had a delicious lunch of walking tacos while visiting with our new prayer partners. Our ingathering for the Fall Rally in Thermopolis, WY will be helping women in crisis with gifts of childrens clothes, stamps, gas cards, and money. Pastor Wisroth led us in a closing prayer service. The Fall Rally titled Lord of the Harvest was held on Sat., September 17 th at St. Paul s Lutheran Church in Thermopolis, WY. There was 32 in attendance. Pastor Needham led us in a Service of Prayer and Preaching; his sermon based on Colossians 4. Pastor Tinglund led the Bible Study titled Lord of the Harvest which included various Bible passages, but centered on Luke 10: He pointed out that Jesus works salvation as one who has borne judgment. Our judge is our savior. Our salvation couldn t be any more secure. He also stressed that we should give our pastor whatever our salvation is worth to us, because our pastor is sent out by God to bring us God s word. After a yummy lunch, Sandy Dittmer gave a presentation on our ingathering for Women in Crisis, collecting items for Hope Agency and Abba s House. The Hope Agency in Thermopolis serves women who are victims of domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, and teen dating violence. Abba s House is a pregnancy help center that soon will be able to administer ultrasounds. Several items were collected for both agencies! Linda Fischer, Zone President, informed the ladies about the 2017 National Convention and said that there were several opportunities to serve at the convention. Each society president was presented a packet of information to share with their societies. Linda brought yarn and netting for delegate favors. The Yellowstone Zone will make 200 each of dish cloths and scrubbies to help with the total amount of 800 needed. Pastor Needham let us in a closing devotion. 5

Gospel Outreach Ellen Burbank My name is Ellen Burbank and I m serving as your new VP of Gospel Outreach. I m honored to be serving the LWML in this office. At the Chadron District Convention you adopted a mission grant goal of $40,000 and I am happy to report that as of October 8th our first two mission grants are PAID! The Wyoming District LCMS Elementary Schools received $5000 ($1000 for each school) and POBLO Missionary to Muslims Training Center in Michigan received $5000. It s always amazing to see how God works thru our mites. The Power Packs for the mite grants are posted on the website and have been sent to zone presidents for distribution. Please share the mission grant projects with your congregations and keep them in your prayers. Parliamentarian Report - Carrie Brumbaugh Have you ever wondered about some things in your minutes and whether or not they should be included? Well here are some questions and answers to help make your minutes more accurate. Does this belong in the minutes? You can play this as a game. This game is played by placing a yes or no after the statement. 1. Date and time of the meeting 2. All main motions as finally adopted 3. The name of the person who seconded a motion 4. The signature of the secretary 5. A summary of a guest speaker's remarks 6. Whether the minutes of the previous meeting were approved 7. A list of the refreshments served 8. The number of votes for each candidate in a ballot election Adapted from the LWML Website. Compiled June 2011 Answers can be found on the bottom of page 4 of the newsletter 6

Pine Ridge Zone Report Terri Denniston Pine Ridge Fall Rally met Saturday, October 1 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Torrington. We hosted 34 attendees including Pastor Maas and his wife, Cheri. Pastor Maas was our mission speaker. He gave a powerful presentation on one of our mission grants: Project-Pastoral Education in West Africa. Everyone was encouraged to wear a hat and there were hats available to borrow. Beef jerky was our ingathering to extend the pastors' nutritional needs while in West Africa. Attending, wearing a hat, and bringing jerky allowed each person a ticket for door prize drawings. Elections for president and treasurer were held. We had an election! Lisa Kaufman is the new president, Ellen Burbank is still Vice- President, Kylie Wilson is treasurer, and Leah Sherman is still secretary. All officers have been Young Women Representatives at district or national level. We praise and thank God for all His benefits to us.
