1 SOUTH LAKE TAHOE YACHT CLUB OCTOBER Page 1 COMMODORE S LOG The Site Search Committee has made a recommendation for a new clubhouse site at the Tahoe Keys Marina. (See article in this issue for more specifics.) This proposal is very attractive financially and the site is generally very positive. It is a site we had occupied before under the previous ownership and when the current ownership took over the Keys, our rental agreement was cancelled, with the 30 days notice required under the agreement. I encourage you to attend the General Membership meeting, Friday, November 14th at Tep s Villa Roma as members of the site search committee will be available to answer any questions. I also encourage you to do your own research r e g a r d i n g t h e o w n e r s h i p a n d management of the Keys and some issues the Keys Marina has had this year. We will be voting on the proposed clubhouse at this General Membership Meeting. We will also be voting on a bylaws change proposal to change the due date for collection of dues from December to June 1. Please see the article in this edition of the Heave Ho for the old and proposed changes. Another vote will be for the 2015 Board of Directors. Please read the the enclosed article. We have a serious situation here as well. Please plan to attend, exercise your right to vote, have a good time and a nice dinner as a SLTYC member. 2 HEAVE HO OCTOBER Page 2 News from Vice Commodore, Jeff Williams Well, another short summer is in the books. Seems like yesterday summer arrived; along with a lot of wind and I mean a lot of wind. Sailors had a great summer IF they could get their vessel out of their slip, in spite of the Marina and their misinformation regarding the dredging. Several of us had to pull our boats early to make sure we could get them out. On October 9 th fifteen of us headed off to the El Dorado and Amador wine country for a day of partying. Six wineries later and less money in our pockets we headed home to find certain unnamed individuals forgot what they bought and had to come back the next day to retrieve their wine. Oh well. We still have some events coming up. Octoberfest is set for Oct 30 th at the Camp Richardson Boathouse. Barbara Marsden is the Cruise Captain and she will need some help to pull off the event. Bring some good eats to share and the bar will be available from Camp Richardson. The November General Meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 14 th at Teps Villa Roma Restaurant at 6:00 PM. Elections will be held for the new Board as well a by-law amendment. Be prepared for an open forum discussion on the Tahoe Keys Marina Clubhouse site followed by a vote. The outcome of the vote will give direction to the new Board of Directors. The joint board meeting of Board will be held at Evans American Gourmet Café on November 19 th. The SLTYC Christmas Dinner Dance will be held in the Teps Banquet Room on December 10th. A Prime Rib carving station will be available along with chicken and salmon dishes. We ll have dancing to the great sounds of DJ Evan Williams. Total cost is around $40 per person (considerably less than in previous years). See the announcement article. This year was a good year for activities; the TGIF s were outstanding with great hosts. The weather and the water depth hampered some of our activities but the ones we had were very much enjoyed. We also had club members donating time to clean Valhalla Beach and help serve the hungry at Bread & Broth. A big THANK YOU to all who helped make 2014 happen. We now need the snow so we can have a snowmobiling outing and more water activities. I wish the new Vice Commodore success. We gained many new members this year. If you have any ideas for next year s events/outings feel free to initiate conversations with other members. Becoming a Cruise Captain and chairing an event/activity is a great way to get involved in the coming year. 3 From the Club House Site Committee In accordance with our by-laws, our Search Committee is notifying SLTYC members that a YES or NO vote will be taken for the proposed clubhouse site at Tahoe Keys Marina and joint occupancy with the Windjammers Yacht Club. The vote will take place at the General Membership meeting November 14, at Tep s Villa Roma. We encourage you to attend this meeting to participate in the discussion. Remember, you must be present to vote. The clubhouse has 2000 square feet including storage. We would share $1500 per month rent ($750 or 37 1/2 cents a square foot per club) with the Windjammers. SLTYC occupied this space a number of years ago with free rent. When the property changed ownership, the club was asked to pay rent going forward, but it was not affordable so the club opted to move out. We have been able to negotiate very favorable terms to return to our waterfront clubhouse. Thank you to all the members who attended the open house on October 11th, feedback has been very positive. PLEASE direct your questions or concerns to our committee at SLTYCfeedback@gmail.com The Details: The Windjammers in July, voted overwhelmingly to proceed with a dues increase and entering into an agreement with SLTYC to lease the building on James Ave. for a Club House. The vote did not go as well with the SLTYC, though affirmative to proceed, the vote was almost a tie vote and the Board of Directors decided not to proceed with the James Ave site. The consensus expressed to the Board, was that the location was unsatisfactory and a continued search for a more suitable site was necessary. The membership wanted something on the water with a nice view and ready to move into with no remodel. The Board appointed a Search committee, to look for such a place. After the committee, in conjunction with members of the Windjammers, looked at three sites and none were suitable, the Tahoe Keys Marina was suggested. Past Commodore Ernie Jones, (current Commodore of the Windjammers ) contacted the Keys Marina and sat down for a long talk with Robert Spinnato, the General Manager. He was very interested in having the Clubs as a tenant. With some concessions on the Clubs part regarding exclusive possession of the room, He would agree to a lease agreement for $1500 per mo. all inclusive. Discussion centered on various options for the yacht clubs to occupy the upstairs room formerly used by the Clubs for their club room. Proposed agreement expressed at meeting of Sept 4th, 2014 with TKM management is as follows: Monthly rent to be $1500 per mo. all inclusive. Clubs will maintain a posted calendar of all scheduled Club events. Fresh Ketch to be allowed to schedule wedding receptions on a not to interfere basis with min. 2 week notice. (Last year there were a total of five receptions with two held downstairs.) Clubs would host or allow use of Club Room as Hospitality Room for Wooden Boat Show. The Marine Academy allowed to use facility as a classroom for instruction/exam for Capt. licensing. If conflict in scheduling, then one or the other of the events will be held downstairs on dance floor. All Club wall decorations would remain in place if framed. Burgees display to be limited to one wall and not flown across entire ceiling. Use of the room will be limited to Club use and scheduled marina events and will otherwise remain locked. Back store room will be exclusive to Clubs for supplies and liquor storage. Intermediate storage area may be used for marina sponsored events and Club events prep area. Upstairs restroom (one) will be for Club use only and This information was presented to the Board of Directors at their meeting October 14.Two additional concerns were expressed to the Search Committee regarding potential parking fees and Handicap access. These items are currently being researched, but no information was available by press time.

ARTICLE III, SECTION 3.3 as written: Dues shall be payable when the first notice is received with the November newsletter. A second notice will be sent with the December newsletter. A final notice will be sent with the January newsletter and dues shall be delinquent if not received by the Treasurer prior to January 31. If a member s dues are not paid by the delinquent date, his membership shall be automatically terminated. Should a member, so terminated, wish to reinstate his membership, he must send his request in writing to the Board of Directors prior to the March Board Meeting, accompanying the request with a check for the dues. The Directors shall act favorably on his request unless good cause appears to the contrary. BY-LAW REVISION WILL BE WRITTEN AS FOLLOWS: 3.3 Dues are payable by June 1. A notice will be included in the March/April newsletter and a final notice will be included in the May newsletter. 7 HEAVE HO OCTOBER Page 7 South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club Adopts A Day at Bread & Broth On Monday, October 13 th, the South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club sponsored a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day of Nourishment. With the $250 donation from the club and the help of the SLT Yacht Club members Nick and Margo Carrell, Ruth Goshorn, Jerry Kahler and Barbara Marsden. Bread & Broth served 105 guests a hot, full course dinner at St. Theresa Church s Grace Hall. The dinner guests enjoyed Lake Tahoe trout and baked salmon, rice pilaf, sautéed vegetables, a tossed green salad, fruit salad, a wide assortment of desserts and drinks. For Barbara and Jerry, it was their first time experiencing the dinner served by B&B. Barbara was very impressed by the quality of the food served and said that because of her membership in the Yacht Club and their charitable contributions, she had this opportunity to participate in serving at Bread and Broth. It is truly a worthwhile cause. Ruth has volunteered several times at B&B dinners and did a great job of running the dessert and drink table. Nick and Margo are also experienced B&B substitute volunteers and regularly give of their time and energy to support the less fortunate of the community. John and Carol Gerard, regular B&B volunteers, were also there to help at the Yacht Club s sponsorship dinner. Having been a volunteer at B&B for the last 5 ½ years and a member of the SLT Yacht Club for the last 1 ½ years, said John, I was very pleased to hear that the Yacht Club picked B&B as one of the charities to support this year. Bread & Broth provides a very needed service to the less fortunate of our community. ( and SLTYC is proud to name folks like John and Carol, Nick and Margo, Ruth, Jerry and Barbara in their membership)
