1 Cowskin Prairie # 2702 CWND Baxter Springs, Kansas United Daughters of the Confederacy Volume 2, Issue 2 April Members President s Message - Fredrea Cook The end of 2015 was monumental and we now proceed into 2016, as we complete this year of service. You will see in this edition of the newsletter that we have accomplished quite a lot. Sadly, our Chaplain and Magazine Director had to resign because of health reasons. Although we said goodbye to Betty Kemp in these positions, we are so happy she is still with us. Betty has moved to Joplin, Missouri and plans to remain as active as possible. As announced on the chapter list, Carrie Cook is filling in as Chaplain until election. February also brought a special called business meeting in Baxter Springs. At that meeting it was voted to bump our business meetings from 4 to 6 per year, establish a special Patriotic Activities Project for Mother s Day Cards to be sent to Afghanistan and Jordan, establish a President s discretionary fund and prepare for the upcoming General Convention. Our one and only fundraiser for this year was the American Indian Records Workshop, held on March 19th at the Shawnee Tribal Community Center in Miami. My personal thanks go to Kay Fleming, Carrie Cook, Barbara Hutton and Kathy Robinson for joining me in this en- deavor which turned out to be a success for our chapter. The Quapaw and Shawnee tribes came to our rescue for this fundraiser and they are very much appreciated. What a perfect place to award the Judah P. Benjamin award to Bill Welge, for his service to the various tribal communities! As we look ahead to our next meeting and Confederate Memorial Day Service at Har-Ber Village, it is my hope that you all will be able to attend. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find calendar dates which I hope are of interest to you and that you will be able to participate. We are off to an excellent start. 3 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 3 Indian Workshop The Chapter held its only fundraiser of the year on March 19th. Through the hard work and financial assistance of five of our Members and the underwriting of both the Quapaw and Shawnee Tribes, the event was termed a great success. We had a fairly decent attendance, especially considering the cold wind. Our speaker, Bill Welge, shared a wealth of information with those in attendance. Among the handouts provided by the Oklahoma Historical Society, for the Workshop, were beautiful color maps of the location of numerous Indian tribes. These held the interest of all those in attendance. During the lunch hour, the Judah P. Benjamin award was presented to Mr. Welge. This Chapter Award was given for his years of service in acting as a liaison and educator with the Native Peoples of Oklahoma. Those tribes represented at our Workshop were so excited to be included in this presentation. Hopefully more of our Members will participate in the future! These events are not only informative but fun as well!!!! 4 Page 4 COWSKIN PRAIRIE # 2702 The trip to General Convention was interesting to say the least. We saw several friends and made a lot of new acquaintances. It was wonderful to see our favorite Mother Hen, Janice Langford! The Registrar General and President General s workshops were attended. Learned a lot about what has been going on from the PG, as well as receiving our marching orders for the coming year. The RG and her assistant laid out the plan. Both these ladies were so full of info and a delight to talk with. WE can do this ladies! Several Divisions ask that we keep them in our prayers, as their respective State Legislatures will be acting on many things that affect our beliefs and values, in the coming sessions. Georgia will make a decision regarding Stone Mountain and other southern monuments. Others will make decisions regarding the use of flags in various places within their states. As a member of the General Committee on Correct Use of the Flags of the Confederacy, I ask that you Stand Firm in your continued efforts to display and fly your flags properly. New bylaws were passed, including disciplinary action for suspended members. All the amendments to the bylaws will appear in the General Minute Book and if you would like to order a copy please contact me, as I have information for ordering your copy. Additionally, it is our understanding that there were some instances of discipline being taken during and shortly after convention. I m sure many of you are sitting here reading this thinking, Why didn t this happen sooner! I m afraid the fallout from what we have been calling the flag flap has brought out the worst in some people, including some daughters. Moving on, there were special reports and meetings, awards, banquets and entertainment. The North Carolina daughters treated everyone to a wonderful convention. They provided a hospitality room with Cheerwine and Krispy Kreme donuts!! Kay and I were fortunate enough to each receive one of the 150 hand-painted Christmas Ornaments. These are absolutely beautiful. North Carolina also treated us to a wonderful tour of the Confederate section of the old Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh before taking us to Bennett Place, where the largest surrender of Confederate troops took place. We ve already reported that Kay took a quick lesson in weaving on their four pedal loom..that was very cool! During the Memorial Service, I reported our loss of Charleen and stated that she was also ex-president of the Oklahoma Division. While this was a sad occasion, I am pleased that I was able to be there for this Memorial. I might add that said Division did not attend this Convention. I was also approached by the UDC Magazine Chairman. We discussed the support our Chapter has given all year to the magazine. She was quite appreciative of our sharing the interesting things we do. I learned a lot from her and hopefully we will be able to utilize it in the future. As Kay and I were leaving the convention floor on the very last day, we were approached by our Chaplin General, who stated that our Cowskin Prairie Chapter had done such outstanding service to our communities and the organization that she would like us to participate in next year's Memorial Service. She had her hand on Kay's shoulder and I believe we were briefly, in shock. Long story short, our own Kay Fleming will give the Memorial to Confederate Soldiers at the General Convention in Richmond. Although we were floored, we were excited to be the very first CWND to be asked. The CG made it clear that she felt our conduct and service warranted the invitation. Besides that, she really liked Kay! We had a wonderful time! I can honestly say this is the very first convention I have ever been to where I felt that I got some rest, even though we had late nights. Perhaps that is why I was able to stand up and give my President's report without notes. Of course, there was not much choice since the report was still in my computer at home. Onward and Upward! Fredrea Cook, Chapter President Cowskin Prairie, CWND Both Kansas Chapters with the President General Linda, Stephanie & Monet, Ladies of the Plains and Pam Trammell, President General Fredrea & Kay, Cowskin Prairie

5 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 5 UDC Time Capsule by Fredrea Cook The General Convention signaled the end of the Sesquicentennial Celebration and closing of the UDC time capsule, which will be opened in 50 years at the General Convention. Many CWND s, somehow did not get the memo about placing items in the time capsule. Kansas was one of those states that did not get the word. After speaking with the chairman, Pamela Wright, Kay Fleming and I discussed our options, given that we were already at the convention. It was my pleasure to remove my own Chapter Pin from my sash ribbon and place it in the time capsule. So, ladies, when the UDC time capsule is opened in 2065, there will be a Cowskin Prairie Chapter Pin, tucked away in a red satin bag with our Chapter information. General Convention Awards Our Chapter brought home several awards from General Convention. We won for the CWND with the best Veteran s Service Report which was for Charleen s coupon project and our service to Veteran Patients in several hospitals and a nursing home; Chapter registering the youngest Member; CWND for best Southern Literature and Arts Report; CWND with the best Correct Use of the Confederate Flags report and the best Overall report for Correct Use of the Confederate Flags. During the Convention, our Chapter Yearbook grew feet and walked away. Additionally, there was no announcement about any Yearbook award. Our book still has not been located, BUT it was listed in the current General Minute Book as wining the best Yearbook Award for After days of s, the Yearbook is still missing, but the Certificate is being sent to us. To date, our Chapter has won best Yearbook for 2014 and Sadly, we did not win for our scrapbook or newsletters. 6 Page 6 COWSKIN PRAIRIE # 2702 Confederate Memorial Day At Har-Ber Village The Chapter will be participating in Civil War Days at Har-Ber Village, Grove, Oklahoma on Saturday, April 30, This is also the date for our quarterly business meeting which will also take place at the Village following lunch. If you have anything for the meeting agenda, Fredrea off list. For those of you who do not realize or remember that our Chapter takes part in these types of living history events, these events are a lot of fun. The entire day will be period clothing, for those who want to get in free of charge and stroll the Village. Otherwise, standard admission prices do apply. Confederate Memorial Day services will take place in the beautiful Har-Ber Village Chapel beside Grand Lake. The service will take place at 11:00 a.m. The public will be able to attend as the chapel is a public space within the village and, of course, our Chapter always honors veterans of all wars. The gates to Har-Ber Village open at 9 a.m. on April 30th. If you plan to participate in the Confederate Memorial Day Service be sure to be in place no later than 10:45 a.m. There will be a photographer on site creating tin-types. Also, a press release will go out this week and there will be 2 Confederate units encamped. We need to be sure to invite these gentlemen.

7 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 7 SCV Memorial Day Service The SCV Confederate Memorial Day Service was held on April 16th in Neosho, Missouri. The event was held at the 100F Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Afterwards several of those gathered had lunch. The event was sponsored by the Campbell s Camp SCV and the Color Guard was the Turkey Creek Fusiliers. Since both groups participated in and promoted our Polson Cemetery event last year it was time for our chapter to reciprocate. Carrie Cook, Fredrea Cook, Kay Fleminig and Jim Rollins attended this event. Mother s Day Cards for the Military On April 8, 2016 on Fredrea s way to purchase Mother s Day Cards for the Military unit we adopted, she was checking out at the Baxter Springs Dollar General Store with an arm load of cards when she was approached by the lady at the register. She said, You must be from the Daughters of the Confederacy! The clerk went on to praise our Chapter for a wonderful project and how much they enjoy having us in Baxter. Then a little lady behind Fredrea handed her some cash and said, It isn t much but Bless you for all you do for our boys! Fredrea was so moved she almost cried. The clerk also told her that everyone in town had heard about us and what we do. Thank you Linda Kennedy, Associate Member for alerting the local Historical Society about our project and asking them to participate. Thank all of you who provided cards and cash contributions for this project. Nancy Turlington sent out 120 Cards to Jordan and Fredrea sent out 130 cards to two units in Afghanistan.

9 Page VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 9 CHAPTER OFFICER LIST - CARRIE COOK 1. If you still haven t become a member of the chapter (or officer) list, please me so I can get an invitation out to you. We love having new members and hope for more participation from organizing members, but I don t always sync up invitations that get past SPAM filters or quick sorts by you. As of Friday, December 18, we have 7 members on the officer list and only 18 of our membership on the member list. That date, I sent invitations to all non-users that had in the chapter book - several of which are not current. Ladies, remember if we all join and check the s through the list, it makes our officers and chairs job easier because they can send correspondence and information to one place quicker than by newsletter. 2. Officers and Chairman that wish to share information publicly can send it, at any time to me for the website. I can update or add webpage(s) for material. I do request that we work together and you not send multiple drafts: While the internet is not carved in stone, it outdated information. 10 Page 10 COWSKIN PRAIRIE # 2702 ~ Why I Am a Daughter of the Confederacy~ I am a Daughter of the Confederacy because I was born a Daughter of the Confederacy. A part of my heritage was that I came into this world with the blood of a soldier in my veins...a soldier who may have had nothing more to leave behind to me and to those who came after me except in heritage..a heritage so rich in honor and glory that it far surpasses any material wealth that could be mine. But it is mine, to cherish, to nurture and to make grace, and to pass along to those yet to come. I am, therefore, a Daughter of the Confederacy because it is my birthright. I am a Daughter of the Confederacy because I have an obligation to perform. Like the man in the Bible, I was given a talent and it is my duty to do something about it. That is why I ve joined a group of ladies whose birthright is the same as mine...an organization which has for its purpose the continuance and furtherance of the true history of the South and the ideals of southern womanhood as embodied in its Constitution. I am a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy because I feel it would greatly please my ancestor to know that I am a member. It would please him to know that I appreciate what he did and delight his soldier love to know that I do not consider the cause which he held so dear to be lost or forgotten. Rather, I am extremely proud of the fact that he was a part of it and was numbered among some of the greatest and bravest men which any such cause ever produced. I am a Daughter of the Confederacy because I can no more help being a Daughter of the Confederacy than I can help being an American, and I feel that I was greatly favored by inheriting a birthright for both.
