2 Oct 3rd Meeting News and Sep UDC Convention report! The UDC Julia Jackson Chapter meeting was held at the Woman s Club on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 with many members and prospective members/guests attending. We conducted the following business at the meeting: The minutes of the October meeting were approved by committee and are reviewed here. The invocation was led by Miss Billie Beth Moore, Chaplain. The Pledge to the United States of America Flag was led by Linda Johnson. Linda Hendrix led the Pledge to the Texas Flag. Gatha Singleton led the Salute to the Confederate Flag. Christean Jenkins took the minutes in Secretary Jan Cowley s absence; Jan s husband is ill. Special guests were recognized. Gail Lewellen presented the Financial Reviewing/Audit Committee Report. Mary Gilstrap presented the Treasurer s report. Betty presented the registrar s report in Diane Dyess s absence. Claudia Pugh announced that her husband received two Military Service Awards at Texas Division Convention; a Korean War Medal and a Vietnam Conflict Medal. Jack Dyess s brother received a World War II Military Service Medal at Convention in Tyler. Jennifer Schnell introduced the speaker: William Covington. He presented: American Revolutionary War Language Adapted by the Confederates. See photos on page 3. Betty Abdo presented a Certificate of Appreciation. Delegates were elected for the UDC General Convention, November 1-5 in Richmond, VA. Janie Pace is attending the event; 12 delegates were elected. Ellyn Ponton presented the bylaws changes for a vote, after the written bylaws were presented in writing at the September meeting. The proposed changes were approved and will appear in the new yearbook to be published after the General Election of officers. The Division Convention Report was presented: 2 new state officers from the Julia Jackson Chapter were installed at the Sunday morning business meeting: 3rd Vice President in charge of the Children of the Confederacy Claudia Pugh and District VII Chairman, Janie Pace. They will serve on the Texas Division Board. Our Chapter brought back 21 Award Certificates: 1. First Place, Best Chapter Scrapbook over 50 members 2. Second Place, Best Chapter newsletter-over 50 members 3. First Place, Most Inches Published Including Photos in the UDC Magazine 4. Most Southern/Confederate Writings Authored by members (73 poems were written by Janice Stout) 5. Most Southern/Confederate Poems read at Meetings, including ceremonies Major Donor for the 150th Anniversary of the War Between the States Confederate Monument erected at the Texas Civil War Museum in Fort Worth 7. Confederate Flags Placed on Memorial Day over 50 members 8. Certificate of Appreciation for Significant contribution to the TX Division Confederate Memorial 9. Interviewed 3 Veterans and files them with the Library of Congress 10. Purchased a UDC Member Marker 11. Betty Abdo Charter member of the Texas Bellles 12. Julia was six months old when her father died in May 1863 from the wounds received at Chancellorsville, Virginia. Julia married William Edmund Christian in Richmond, Virginia in 1884.

Julia Jackson The Organization first met under the guidance of Mrs. Katie Cable Currie, the first President of the Texas Division, at a meeting on September 19, 1897, called by Major K. M. Van Zandt, Commander of the R. E. Lee Camp 158, UCV, Fort Worth, TX. The Chapter was Chartered October 13, Julia Jackson was born November 23, 1862 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the only child of Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson and Anna Morrison Jackson to live to adulthood. Julia was six months old when her father died in May 1863 from the wounds received at Chancellorsville, Virginia. Julia married William Edmund Christian in Richmond, Virginia in They had two children; Julia Jackson Christian ( ) and Thomas Jonathan Jackson Christian ( ). Childhood illnesses left Julia frail as an adult and she died of typhoid fever at the age of 26 years, August 30, The adoption of her name for our Chapter was in honor of the memory of the daughter of General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and his wife, Mary M. Jackson. A letter was written to her mother informing her of this action, and the chapter received from Mrs. Jackson a letter in which she conveyed her deep appreciation to the officers and members for this remembrance. Julia, at left, is wearing a necklace containing a photograph of her father; Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson. The last photograph of Jackson dates from late April 1863 and is often called the "Chancellorsville photograph" Jackson was headquartered near what would soon become his last battlefield - Chancellorsville - when a photographer from the Richmond studio of Minnis and Crowell convinced him to pose for a portrait. Stonewall Jackson The Chapter celebrated the 115th Anniversary with ice cream for dessert at the luncheon. Years ago, the chapter gathered at the Van Zandt Cottage for cake and ice cream.
