1 Cowskin Prairie 2702 Chapter Where No Division United Daughters of the Confederacy Volume 5, Issue 2 Special Edition Members - 34 President s Message Let s build on our December momentum! It was great to see those of you that were able to participate on December 1 st. Likewise, as a member on the move, it was great to see Nancy T. involving another generation with Wreaths Across America, this year. Kudos to Brittani for taking on our Scrapbook project and welcome aboard. In addition to lots of things already scheduled for 2019, from Old Timers Day (see you in May!) to our Confederate Memorial Day with silent auction (fund raising), I m excited about the potential for our June retreat. I ve hesitated to begin setting the retreat in stone, due to the current lack of input. However, if we don t get started, it won t get off the ground. Therefore, set aside the second weekend in June: that s Friday evening the 7 th through the 9 th. This will give us a full day, as well as an evening and morning. When polled earlier, the sentiment was to set the geographical area and RSVP date, allowing me to get the most bang for the buck, based on our buying power. To this end, the estimated cost will be $ for two nights and 5 meals: The geography will be from - more or less - the Oklahoma City Metro area east to Fort Smith, AR and north to Carthage, MO. This creates a rough triangle with lots of options to suit. In this price range and area, I m confident we can have a small group or up to most of our membership though there might be some shared beds. Your RSVP for this should include any wish list items, including any limited mobility such as no stairs, walker accommodation, etc), pool, city/country, etc. We ll be sure to accommodate mobility needs as stated, and do what we can about the rest. Requests should include activities or topics it s already been suggested that we might get crafty. Let me know as soon as possible, but send your $25.00 deposit to Fredrea at PO BOX 505, Wyandotte OK 74370, before January 31. This is important because I ll start shopping venues based on the size of the group as of this date. The balance will be due by our meeting on April 6, If you wish to bring people who are not members, this is not a members only function. This would be a great time to invite friends and family who are potential members, as well. I look forward to having to book a large venue for our retreat! Best Wishes for the New Year! Carrie 1

3 Workshops The Chapter will conduct some Makers Workshops, in 2019, which will be not only educational and helpful; they should be a lot of fun! We have many talented members and several are willing to share. The first Workshop will be in Muskogee, OK (see calendar) and deal with decorating bonnets and hats. Barbara H. will be helping us design and decorate the hats. Thanks to our member, Nancy C., for kindly providing the place and a pot of soup! Members attending should bring a sandwich, favorite drink, their hat and decorating supplies. Each member that wants to attend should let Barbara know that you plan to do so. Another Workshop which many of the active members are excited about will deal with Wreath Making. Our member, Brittani, makes lovely wreaths (along with her grandmother, Sandi) and has agreed to conduct this workshop. You may see some of Brittani s work within this Newsletter. As soon as we have the date and place nailed down, the information will be available. There is also talk of a Workshop which will deal with smalls, such as making ornaments, WBTS cockades, hatpins, jewelry, bath salts, etc. Do YOU know how to make such items AND are you willing to share with your sisters?? If you do, please contact the President. ~~Hat Workshop~~ Your hat can be decorated in any way you desire. You may bring your own hat to decorate, in any color(s) you want. IF you purchased one of the Mourning Hats/Bonnets, they have arrived and will be available at the workshop. Mourning colors usually include black, grey, purple, dark green, burgundy/wine and navy. Something that comes to mind is that members may want to consider some type of interchangeable decorations. Again, if you plan to attend this workshop, contact Barbara and let her know. Following is a list that should be helpful as you begin to gather items for your needs, at the Workshop. If needed, bring your own: Needle Thread Pins Scissors Glue gun/glue Wire cutters Wig head if you have one It may help in your work. Potential decorating items: Ribbon Braid or other Trims Lace Feathers Flowers Leaves Fabric Buttons Come join the fellowship and fun!! 3

4 Historian s Corner General Forrest Speaks in Memphis, Tennessee - MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL - July 6, 1875 On July 5 of 1875 a Black political organization that was a forerunner of the NAACP (but this organization was formed by Black persons, not white communists) and Black citizens held a convention in Memphis, TN. Among the invited speakers was General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Here are some of his remarks to them. You have been lied to about General Forrest and the Black community. General Forrest, allow me to introduce to you Miss Lou Lewis, who, as the representative of colored ladies, will present you with a bouquet to assure you of the sincerity they entertain for the objects of this occasion [cheers] and as an offering of peace. Lou Lewis then advanced to where General Forrest was standing and presented the bouquet with the following remarks: Mr. Forrest, allow me to present you this bouquet as a token of reconciliation and an offering of peace and good will. [Applause] General Forrest received the bouquet, and in response said: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I accept the flowers as a memento of reconciliation between the white and colored races of the Southern States. I accept it more particularly as it comes from a colored lady, for if there is any one on God s earth who loves the ladies I believe it is myself. [Immense applause and laughter] This day is a day that is proud to me, having occupied the position that I did for the past twelve years, and been misunderstood by your race. This is the first opportunity I have had during that time to say that I am your friend. I am here a representative of the southern people, one more slandered and maligned than any man in the nation. I will say to you and to the colored race that men who bore arms and followed the flag of the confederacy are, with very few exceptions, your friends. I have an opportunity of saying what I have always felt that I am your friend, for my interests are your interests, and your interests are my interests. We were born on the same soil, breathe the same air, and live in the same land. Why then, can we not live as brothers? I will say that when the war broke out I felt it my duty to stand by my people. When the time came I did the best I could, and I don t believe I flickered. I came here with jeers of some white people, who think that I am doing wrong. I believe that I can exert some influence, and do much to assist the people in strengthening fraternal relations, and shall do all in my power to bring about peace. It has always been my motto to elevate every man to depress none. [Applause] I want to elevate you to take positions in law offices, in stores, on farms, and wherever you are capable of going. I have not said anything about politics to-day. I don t propose to say anything about politics. You have a right to elect whom you please; vote for the man you think best, and I think, when that is done, that you and I are freemen. Do as you consider right and honest in electing men for office. I did not come here to make you a long speech, although invited to do so by you. I am not much of a speaker, and my business prevented me from preparing myself. I came to meet you as friends, and welcome you to the white people. I want you to come nearer to us. When I can serve you I will do so. We have but one flag, one country; let us sand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment. Use your best judgment in selecting men for office and vote as you think right. Many things have been said about me which are wrong, and which whites and black persons here, who stood by me through the war, can contradict. I have been in the heat of battle when colored men, asked me to protect them. I have placed myself between them and the bullets of my men, and told them they should be kept unharmed. Go to work, be industrious, live honestly and act truly, and when you are oppressed I ll come to your relief. I thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for his opportunity you have afforded me to be with you in heart and in hand. [Prolonged applause]" Posted by the Southern Historical Society 4

5 Chapter Members on the Move Stefanie did her best to take in as much of the beauty of Richmond as possible. She visited Hollywood Cemetery and strolled Monument Avenue, among other sites. Always anxious to learn more and visit interesting places, she also made other stops. Many of you will remember our van trip to the Cold Harbor Battlefield. Robert E. Lee J.E.B. 6 Hardee and Nancy T. Visit Vets Nine year old Hardee wanted to help the Cowskin Prairie Chapter, UDC deliver gifts to residents in the local nursing home, for Veterans Day. He filled gift bags with soaps, gels, shampoos, and lotions for the veterans. He also had camo throws for the veterans, which were all donated by the Chapter. His grandmother, Nancy T., took Hardee to present the gifts and when he ran out of the camo throws, she took him to Walmart and he bought more to take back to the nursing home to present. There were a lot of smiles and Hardee left with a happy heart! Editors Note: This young man also helped the chapter set the 6 Iron Crosses at Polson Cemetery and continues to keep an eye on them! 6 Photos Courtesy Nancy T.
