He served as Surgeon General of the U.S. Army, and was instrumental in curbing malaria and yellow fever deaths during the construction of the Panama Canal by eradicating mosquitos. 2. He was the great-grandson of Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was serving as chief of staff of the Second Air Force when his B-17 went down on a bombing mission in Germany. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross posthumously for staying at the controls of the plane while his crew bailed out. 3. Born in Staunton, Virginia, he served two terms as President of the United States. 4. Two of his uncles served in the war, one as the Confederacys chief agent in England, and the other as the youngest officer aboard CSS Alabama. He served two terms as President of the United States. 5. Several members of his family served the Confederacy in his home state; they and their kin were often victimized by pro-union irregulars. 6 Men and women, dont you think I have the ancestral right to claim a proud kinship with those who showed their devotion to duty as they saw the duty, whether they wore the grey or whether they wore the blue? All Americans who are worthy the name feel an equal pride in the valor of those who fought on one side or the other, provided only that each did with all his strength and soul and mind his duty as it was given to him to see his duty.
