3 In Memoriam Irene Bradford Carter Gen. Edmond Winchester Rucker 2534 mourns the loss of our member Mrs. Irene Carter of Brundidge, who passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at her residence. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Brundidge United Methodist Church with Rev. Ed Shirley officiating. Burial followed in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery with Skeen Funeral Home of Troy directing. Miss Irene was born April 5, 1927 in Monroe County to the late Kruger Allois and Mamie Irene Norwood Bradford. She was a member of Brundidge United Methodist Church, the UDC, DAR and she loved genealogy. She retired from the U.S. Post Office after thirty-two years of service. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her first husband, Calvin Quay Flowers. She is survived by her husband, Hilton Carter, Brundidge; son, Allois Flowers, Brundidge; daughters, Olivia Spurlin and Mary Ann Flowers all of Troy; four grandchildren, Ramona Spurlin, Troy; Leah Spurlin, Bowling Green, Kentucky; Rachel Hooper, Troy; and Audra Bass, Shiloh, Alabama; three great grandchildren, Connor and Luke Bass, and Matthew Hooper. Donations may be made in her memory to the Brundidge Methodist Church or Brundidge Masonic Lodge. Gen. Edmond W. Rucker th Anniversary Members, prospective members, and spouses, please join us in celebrating the 30 th Anniversary of Gen. Edmond Winchester Rucker 2534,. The event will be held Saturday, August 26, at 11:00 am at PoFolks Restaurant in Enterprise. The chapter was named for General E. W. Rucker because of his outstanding service with General Nathan Bedford Forrest in the Confederate Cavalry and also because of the contributions the local army base, Fort Rucker, has made to Enterprise and Coffee County.

What was the cause of more than half the deaths of soldiers on both sides of the War? 2. This Massachusetts-born woman was a battlefield nurse and procurer of supplies for the Union Army; after the War, she founded the American Red Cross. Who was she? 3. Known as the Angel of the Confederacy, this woman was commissioned as a captain in the Confederate Army so she could continue to operate a military hospital she founded. Her hospital had the lowest death rate of any on either side of the War. Who was she? 4. This Prussian-born doctor received his degree from the Medical College of Virginia and served as a surgeon in the Confederate Army for the duration of the War. After the War, he was an advocate for public health. His son was a financial advisor to U. S. Presidents. Who was he? 5. This South Carolinian doctor was a veteran of the Mexican War; he served as Surgeon General of the Confederacy for nearly the entirety of the War. Who was he? 6. This Confederate hospital in Richmond was one of the worlds largest military hospitals. The site is now a park which bears the same name as the hospital. What was it? 7. This woman was Superintendent of Army Nurses of the Union Army. She spent her life, before and after the War, advocating for humane care of the mentally ill; she founded thirtytwo hospitals before her death in Who was she? 8. Born in Britain, this woman came to the U.S. in order to be accepted into a medical school. She graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York, the first woman to receive a medical degree in America. During the War, she and her sisters trained nurses for the Union Army. Who was she? UCD Benevolent Contributions for August Ladies, the Benevolent Committee is asking us to bring school supplies to our August meeting. Suggestions are wide-ruled notebook paper, #2 pencils, rulers, school scissors, white glue, crayons, folders, spiral notebooks, and construction paper. Please continue to bring canceled stamps, and coupons for our soldiers. We are still collecting hotel soaps and lotions, and can tabs. President Abraham Lincoln asked Lt. General Winfield Scott, "Why is it that you were once able to take the City of Mexico in three months with 5,000 men, and we have been unable to take Richmond with 100,000 men?" "I will tell you," said General Scott. "The men who took us into the City of Mexico are the same men who are keeping us out of Richmond."
