2 PRESIDENT: Spring Greetings UMW Sisters! What a wonderful time of year to be alive in God s creation! Everywhere I look, I see evidence of rebirth and renewal. Thanks be to God for His mercy, grace, love and forgiveness through the sacrifice of His Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. First of all, a huge thank you for all that have lifted up prayers for me, as well as sending cards and bringing food as I recover from my broken ankle. There is nothing to compare with the support of United Methodist Women when something happens in our lives. You truly have demonstrated what being a supportive community looks like! I am so glad I was able to attend the Mission Study and the Legislative Day, despite my injury. Being in your presence made me immediately feel so much better. We learned so much at both events. The women of Yadkinville UMW and First Mocksville UMW really did a fabulous job hosting these Saturdays. There was so much to learn about the issues that face our daily lives and the need for Christian action to create solutions to these problems. If you were not able to attend, please contact someone that did for a report on how you can make a difference. The need is urgent and we are called to be God s caretakers for this planet and for those that are the least and the lost. In my lifetime, I have never experienced a time quite like this in our nation s history. As Christians, we must come together, setting aside our political differences and remembering that we are Christians before we are anything else Americans, Democrats, Independents or Republicans. Our allegiance should first be to Christ and as such, we are called to stand up for those that cannot stand for themselves. Please continue to pray for our nation and its leaders, but also, contact your legislators about issues that affect women, youth, and children. Thanks for all the year-end reports that I have received. There is a new option available online so that each member of your unit can create a membership card that can be printed by the computer. I realize everyone doesn t have access to a computer or printer, so maybe the most technologically savvy person in your unit could complete the questions for each person. The address for the membership link is: I am looking forward to the Prayer Breakfast/Day Apart at the end of this month at Mt. Tabor. And, as always our Spiritual Growth Retreat in June is such an uplifting and renewing time at Lake Junaluska. This year s theme, S.M.I.L.E., See Miracles in Life Everyday, is a timely reminder that we are not alone. God is with us, every day of our lives and miracles are still taking place, if we only have eyes to see them. Again, thanks for your continued prayers and support. I have been so blessed to serve in this position. See you soon! Darlene 2 27

There is a particular type of woman; a rare and diverse breed, a woman who will dare to test boundaries, a woman who will dare to succeed. Unfettered by convoluted circumstance, undaunted by the size of the fight She's a headstrong force to be dealt with, conscientious, full of gumption, blessed with insight. How dare she depart from the usual path to take the road few travel. How dare she follow her own conviction -- her own destiny to unravel. The first woman elected bishop, the first woman ordained to preach, the first woman to demand the vote, and simple freedom of speech. The first Superintendent, the first to pen a hymn, the first to challenge what's not allowed, the first to stand up, the first to stand out, the first to plough furrows never ploughed! The first of her race, the first of her gender, the first to spread her wings and fly! The first to look at the world around her and say if they can do it, so can I! They dared to unshackle the heavy burden of being born a mere female! They dared to be the first to do it, they dared to blaze their own trail. It's easy to jump on the bandwagon once the hay has been comfortably softened; so..., dare to pick up the pitchfork yourself, and dare to do it more often! It's no accident you're here at this time and in this place, true...most of us won't make history, but all can be in the race. So gird up your loins girls, and remember this battle cry... "I may not be the first one to dare it, but I won't be the last one to try!" When I was attending the district mission study on Climate Justice, I was thinking about that. If we all take just one new action from that study, what an impact it could make! And if we implement several of those actions it can be even greater. Anything we can do to reduce our carbon footprint is good for our planet. You may want to visit and see how you can reduce yours. 6 Treasurer: Jamie Smith I enjoyed seeing many UMW Sisters at the Conference Legislative Day and the District Mission Study this month! Our year is already flying by, and I know the Holy Spirit is with us as we work to be the hands and feet of Jesus with support to MISSIONS! Help me pray for our Local Units to survive and thrive so our work may accomplish important tasks this year. Our Conference financial goal is To Increase Mission Giving in the Gift of Memory Channel by 20%. As has said, this is not hoping to see an increase in loss of members, but to see members increase giving in remembrance of those who have helped get UMW where we are today. This does not mean we only remember UMW members, a Gift in Memory card (or a donation) can be for anyone we would like to pay a tribute to, anyone who has touched our lives. Giving on all holidays, anniversaries of deaths, birthdays, All Saint s Day, any occasion is a good time to remember those who were special to us. This giving also fulfills a Mission Today Unit requirement. Your Unit Treasurer can order cards from me, or you can get them at District and Conference events. 8 Happy Easter Ladies, Program Resources: Debra Lawson I hope you are reading and learning as you read of missions and are being fed by this year books selections. I am currently reading a book from last year called Americanah. It is a book about students who have come to America for an education due to the schools not staying open for higher education. The main characters are Ifemelu and Obinize from Nigeria who are in love. Ifemelu moves to America. Obinize hoped to meet her but due the post 09/11 ends up in London. Ifemulu tells of her experiences here in America. The book is very interesting and informative. It is a novel; but it is a good example of how a non Black American deals with the transition from their country to our American culture. The two meet and marry other people. Read the book to see how their journeys end. It has really made me think of how strange they felt in foreign countries. Remember to be sure you are reading at least one book from the five selections. They are Leadership Development, Social Action, Spiritual Growth, Nurturing Community, and Education for Mission. Remember that reading an eligible children s book to children also counts. United Methodist Women mission studies can be read for credit in the following categories: Spiritual growth study to Spiritual Growth Geographic study for Education for Mission Issue study for Social Action If you need to order books, pamphlets, and other items the web site is or you can call I do not keep books on hand. I do sometimes have free materials on hand. If you have questions or would like for me to come and visit your unit, please feel free to contact me. Look forward to providing you with books and answering any questions you may have about the reading program. Debra Mission Education and Interpretation: Valerie Prim A heart felt thanks to the YVD Mission Study committee, Yadkinville UMC, and our speaker, Sandrea Williamson for coming together and providing an "awesome" Mission Study. It was a beautiful day filled with learning, fellowship, food, and fun (rapped and danced to "Recycle with Michael"). My prayer is that you were moved in some way to begin to make a change in yourself, family, church, and community. May we begin to see with Christ eyes the needs of people around us. Let us us go forward as courageous ambassadors for Climate Justice. Thank you for the wonderful response of school supply and arts and crafts supply for The Bethlehem Center of W/S. We delivered over 10 boxes to the center. We would also like to thank the Bethlehem centers pre-school for the precious center pieces for our tables at the mission study. Remember to stay active in missions. Looking forward to seeing a lot of new faces at Mission U, in July! (Come have the time of your life). 10 Greetings UMW Sisters, From many reports I've heard about, units are exploding in learning about Social Action Issues in many different ways: attending our District Mission Study on Climate Justice; using the skits in our program book; attending the Conference Legislative Day having special speakers, such as a 15-year old young lady, Kailyn Porter, who is waving high the banner for Justice for those victims of modern-day slavery. Please call on any District Officer to come and share at your local meetings. Also, you can call me, Joyce Irby at to come and speak at your meeting or just come and visit with you. I do suggest that you have more than one date in mind for me to come. I enjoy seeing United Methodist Women in action! SHOUT OUTS TO: 1. FIRST UMW in Thomasville who presented two skits from our program book which led to some lively discussion and action plans. They had some awesome actors too. Part of their mission outreach is helping to provide meals and/or snacks for the high school athletes especially the sports that don't generate a lot of support. Also they learned that many of the athletes were passing out because they did not have enough to eat during the day. How AWESOME is this! 2. St. James UMW in Rural Hall supported the W. Gene Malloy Scholarship Fund with a Yard Sale and as participants of the Community Choir Concert. By the time this newsletter comes out the deadline will have passed to apply so keep this in mind for any Forsyth County high school student who could use some money in their senior year. 3. I will be visiting Pine Grove UMW, Kernersville in May. Wave High the banner for Justice, Joyce Social Action: Kailyn Porter, age 15, speaking to the UMW at New Mt Vernon UMC in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Kailyn is a passionate young lady sharing a need to support stopping human trafficking with Hope For Justice. Hope For Justice is a not for profit company in the USA who works to bring an end to modern day slavery by rescuing victims, restoring lives, and restoring society. Kailyn feels led, by the grace of God, to support this mission and build church partnerships with Hope For Justice in her community Resident Youth Camp provides the opportunity for up to 20 high school students or recent graduates to participate in study, worship, fellowship and hands-on ministry!
