Thanks be to God. We are told in the Bible to be thankful in all things and especially to pray without ceasing. Thus I know that good things come if we wait on the Lord. 6 Page 6 CATAWBA VALLEY DISTRICT Social Action Phyllis Leatherman pleatherman1949@gmail.com I hope you have been anticipating spring as much as I have. What a winter! I would like to direct your attention to a great organization within our church: General Board of Church and Society. This organization has a wealth of topics on social issues. It lists justice campaigns that you might want to take action on. It also has direct links for sending messages to your U. S. Representatives and U. S. Senators. It further includes our Social Principles and Social Creed that would make a great program and qualify as a criterion for a Mission Today unit. Contact them at: General Board of Church and Society 100 Maryland Avenue, NE Washington, DC Or visit their website to be placed on their mailing list. If you haven t been to our newly updated website, please do so soon. Scroll to the bottom of the home page and click on the Action Alerts. It is now so very easy to join the Social Action Network. Under the Recent News Posts take time to read Forty Days of Racial Justice. We have much to do, to put Faith-Hope-Love into action! Yours in Christ, Phyllis Leatherman Secretary Sharon Voigt I would like to give you a heads up on some of the Secretaries duties: The Secretary must understand the organizational form, the PURPOSE, the program, and the vital involvement of the local unit in order to perform the responsibilities assigned to her and to assist the president. She will keep and provide minutes of all meetings of the local unit, give notice of said meetings, and keep attendance for all; serving as a custodian of all records and official papers; she will sign with the President, all orders by the treasurer, and all official and legal papers, making certain that they are properly dated. She will send a list of elected unit leaders (including names, addresses zip codes, phone numbers and available s) to the District Secretary (sharonvoigt07@aol.com) with a copy to the District President immediately upon their election; and report ad interim changes. She will also serve on the Executive Committee, and where they exist, the committees on Program, Finance, Membership Nurture and Outreach, and send any correspondence as directed by the President. Wow! There is still more to come in the next newsletter. If you have not received a list of district leaders, please me at sharonvoigt07@aol.com. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me! Philippians 4:13 Blessing to you and yours! Sharon Voigt Secretary to Catawba Valley District UMW sharonvoigt07@aol.com
7 Page 7 VOLUME 1, I SSUE 2 Treasurer Gaye Dagenhart cvdtreasurer@gmail.com Hello. It was terrific to see so many of you at the District Spiritual Growth Event. It was a wonderful event. St. Luke s UMC is my home church and I hope you were pleased with the facilities and the music. Many thanks to Barbara Goines who helped me in the Resource Room at this event. We finished the first quarter of 2015 with $24, or 15.4% of the budgeted goal. Of that total amount, $20, was given in the Five Channels of Giving and $2, was given to Prayer and Self Denial. The remainder was to designated giving. As you know our budgeted goal is $135,000. Once again, I ll be mailing out confirmations of each unit s giving with the treasurer s newsletter so that you can be assured that I have received and posted correctly all that you have remitted. Look for it around the end of the first week of May. Second quarter reporting is due to me by June 1, Please make checks payable to Catawba Valley District UMW. Thanks to all of you for all you do to make our district successful. Gaye Dagenhart Catawba Valley District Treasurer cvdtreasurer@gmail.com Phone: Historian Belinda Worsham belindaworsham@yahoo.com March is More about History than March Madness. Not only is March the month set aside to honor Women s History, it just so happens to be the anniversary month for United Methodist Women as well. So if you missed it take a moment to take note anyway! March 23, 1869 is the birthday of the Women s Foreign Missionary Society, which is the predecessor to our very own United Methodist Women. As we prepare for the 150th birthday in just 4 years you will start noticing a lot of information coming your way about the history of our organization. The Response magazine is full of information about the history and stories about our foremothers in each edition this year. Share this information with your group, especially with your new members so they can learn what it is to be a part of this great heritage. Let s do our part to make certain the work goes on long into the future so one day we too will be a part of the great history of United Methodist Women. Belinda Worsham Historian

20 Frequently Asked Questions about The Legacy Fund / 150th Anniversary Celebration: What is The Legacy Fund? A key element of the 150th Anniversary celebration in A designated fund (endowment) of the national office of United Methodist Women. (Only interest can be expended.) Our Western North Carolina Every Member Legacy Fund Goal: That every member of United Methodist Women make a gift to The Legacy Fund of at least $18.69 per year, over and above her Pledge to Mission, for five years ( ). What is the purpose of The Legacy Fund? To assure the continuation of ministries with women, children and youth, worldwide, into the next 150 years. To enable United Methodist Women to respond more adequately to new and emerging needs. To minimize the risk of severe budget fluctuation in years of recession, regional financial crisis, or change in giving by the membership. How will the funds be used? The total program of United Methodist Women is mission. Interest from The Legacy Fund will be added to Mission Giving funds to formulate the national budget of United Methodist Women. (Mission Giving is the largest source of that budget which includes grants to National Mission Institutions such as the Bethlehem Centers in Charlotte and Winston-Salem, international programs and projects, program resource production, training, and more.) Why should I give to The Legacy Fund? The Legacy Fund is OUR special anniversary gift to future United Methodist Women members and ministries. To pass on the legacy we have inherited. To stake out our legacy for future generations. (January 2015 response, page 3). Isabella Thoburn College, Lucknow, India, is an outgrowth of the work of the first missionary of our organization. The College motto is: We Receive to Give. Because we believe in the PURPOSE of United Methodist Women and want our daughters, granddaughters, nieces and friends to share our sense of meaningful sisterhood. To be part of the joyous celebration in 2019 culminating 150 years of ministry. How does the money get to the National Office? Gifts are given to the local treasurer who sends the Legacy Fund money and commitment cards to the District treasurer following regular procedures. There is a line on the local treasurer Remittance form for The Legacy Fund. Does a Legacy Fund gift count for the individual or Unit Pledge to Mission Giving? No. This is a special additional gift to celebrate the 150th anniversary. In fact, it is critical that we sustain and even increase our Pledge to Mission Giving during this five year campaign; the needs have never been greater. How do we give? Annually? All at once? What about non-cash gifts? Each person can determine her schedule of giving; any schedule is appropriate. Non-cash gifts of stock, property, life insurance, etc., can be given through the United Methodist Women National Office. Contact the Treasurer s office at How do I get a Legacy 150 pin? When you turn in a Commitment Card, you will receive a pin at your district annual meeting.
