4 President Happy New Year! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your president for I am honored, humbled, and excited to serve with the Metro District UMW Mission Team. We are working to provide a variety of experiences this year that will allow us all to put Faith, Hope, and Love in Action. People lead busy lives, but just recently I viewed a presentation ( given by time management expert Laura Vanderkam related to how busy people spend their lives. She discovered that many of us drastically overestimate our commitments each week, while underestimating the time we have to ourselves. Think about it. There are 24 hours in a day and 7 days a week. That equals 168 hours. Minimally, if we work a 40 hour week and sleep 8 hours a night, that still leaves us with 72 hours a week for other things to do. What we have to decide is, What matters to us? I believe that the issues addressed locally, nationally and globally by United Methodist Women matter. Surely we can all find some time for what matters and working together we can make an impact. United Methodist Women is a connectional organization. We need to give time to our local units, our district and our conference. By doing so, those who need our help will receive it and we will grow spiritually in the process. I look forward to using my time this year to get to know you and to represent you to the best of my ability wherever I go. I hope you will use some of your time to check out all that United Methodist Women has to offer. Lynda Morris lfmorrisap@aol.com This year all eight districts have been asked to prepare 100 School Kit totes. If your unit can contribute fabric to be used to make totes, please bring it to the Mission Study March 17! A sewing day will be held at Pineville UMC Saturday, April 7 at 9:00 a.m. More info to follow. 4

5 Vice President Welcome to 2018!! Prayerfully consider including in your New Year s resolutions plans to increase involvement in United Methodist Women activities and the Legacy Fund. As your units/circles perform service projects and share in faith renewal activities, please me pictures from these events in which they participated. Be sure to include your church name, city/town, activity title and any other pertinent information. These photos will be compiled into a video presentation, Metro District s Power of Bold, scrolling as you enter our Annual Meeting in August. The meeting will be held on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Matthews United Methodist Church, 801 S. Trade Street, Matthews, NC Specific meeting details and directions will be provided in future Newsletters. Thank you in advance for your photo submissions. Blessings, Nancy Ward Metro District Vice President nward001@carolina.rr.com Mission, Education & Interpretation Mission Education and Interpretation what is that all about? 2018 will be an exciting year for our ME&I activities from the local unit, through the district, up to the conference level. First, each unit can support ME&I by participating in Mission Study at any level. As a unit you may host a mission study for your church, as a part of the Metro District, you may attend the District Mission Study on March 17th at Forest Hill UMC, Concord NC, and Mission u will again be hosted by Pfeiffer University, Misenheimer, NC, July 19-22, 2018 where will see our UMW sisters across the Western North Carolina Conference. Second, you may also become a Mission Today unit by successfully fulfilling the necessary criteria outlined by our conference Leadership Team. Mission Today Units are recognized at our District Annual Celebration each year in August. And as a District we are recognized by the Western North Carolina Conference as well. Please review the Mission Today criteria which you received at Leadership Development Day in November at Westford UMC. If you need another peek please contact Nancy Litton, ME&I Coordinator or visit the conference website for a copy. Returning again this year is the opportunity to support the Legacy Fund as individuals and as a unit as a part of Mission Today criteria. There is a lot to learn, share and ways to grow as you become a Mission Today Unit please make that a goal for Nancy Litton, ME&I Coordinator 5

7 Secretary Happy New Year! Secretaries in our local units have the responsibility to keep accurate and useful minutes of all meetings for their unit. Remember, the minutes are used to assist the President in forming an agenda for the next meeting. Keeping minutes is essential and should record actions taken when a motion is made and if it is approved or defeated. Follow the agenda set up by the President to help with minutes. Make sure your unit has sent information about your 2018 Officers to the district President, Secretary or Communications Coordinator. We need name, office, address, phone number and an address if they have one. Please send this information even if the officers are the same as This is how we get information to our members. It is so very important that all UMW members get as much information about events and mission projects as possible. The District Mission Study is scheduled for March 17th. The hands on project will be Hygiene Kits. Encourage your members to attend and return the sign-up sheet by the deadline. Please know that I am here to help you with anything you need. 8 Program Resources Happy New Year! I hope you ve started 2018 off by reading a book (or two) from the UMW Reading List. Books this year look at the history between The United Methodist Church, the United States and Native people; Alzheimer s disease and the importance of wellness in body and spirit. There are 4 Reading Plans for your unit to choose from; find one the one that works best for you. Books read from the reading lists will be credited toward the reading plan -- including children and youth books so you have many incredible books to choose from. Amanda Dyer Secretary of Program Resources adyer0813@gmail.com MEMBERSHIP, NURTURE AND OUTREACH The Western North Carolina Conference United Methodist Women has set a financial goal to increase our membership by 5% in How do we increase membership? Invite women to join your unit. They do not need to be a member of your church or even a United Methodist to be in the United Methodist Women. Any woman can be a United Methodist Woman. Be consistent. It can take up to five invitations before one is accepted. Tell others all about United Methodist Women with enthusiasm and love! This may make someone curious about us and what we do. Check the membership resources available on our website If you have questions or need information about United Methodist Women or need a program, invite your Nurturing Partner or other District Officer to your unit for Local Unit Visitation (LUV). They are a great resource. We want to visit your units and we may even invite ourselves. It also fulfills requirement #20 for Mission today. A list of Nurturing Partners and Officers is in this newsletter. Debbie Eudy H: C: snakcak3655@yahoo.com 8

12 LEGACY FUND ENERGIZER Hello, my name is Kris Peurifoy and I am excited and humbled to be your Metro District UMW Legacy Fund Energizer. Throughout this newsletter and online you can find the basic information you need about the Legacy Fund Endowment. We will continue to educate and encourage our members to be a part of this wonderful opportunity, for woven throughout the basic information is the living, breathing, pulsing life of United Methodist Women! Mission Highlight: Emma Norton Home in Minnesota, 100 years old, changing services as the needs change: Until 2008, Pam Mischel lived in a nice townhouse with her children and had a good job overseeing the care and maintenance of a 50-townhome complex. But when her methamphetamine addiction spiraled out of control, she was fired from her job and evicted from her home all within a two-week period. We had nowhere to stay, said 49-year-old Mischel. For years, she couch-hopped at homes of friends and family and sometimes even stayed in cardboard boxes inside of shelters. Eventually, she sent her kids to stay with her sister. In 2013, Mischel quit meth for good, but it wasn t until she ended up in the hospital last year that she learned about Emma Norton Services in St. Paul, Minnesota, and moved into its dorm-style building to get her life back on track I love having somewhere I know I am sleeping every night and a closet with clothes in it, said Mischel, who is working with a case manager and has big plans to earn her GED and become a drug counselor. Source: response Dec Women get things done! Look at your church. What projects to help others were started by women? At Forest Hill in Concord, where I am a member, our clothing closet for the community and our children s consignment sale were both started by women. Continue to be a part of the Legacy of UMW. Savings tip: Set out a jar or cute decorative container. Determine the amount and how often you would like to feed that container. Use that to contribute what you can to the Endowment Fund. I am here to answer questions, to address concerns, to come and speak. Your Sister in Christ, Kris Peurifoy, , Krispeurifoy@aol.com 12
