4 Three Great Loves and the greatest of these is love. Crop for Caring 2018 January 20 January 21 Jan 20 at 9 AM to Jan 21 at 9 PM Bethel United Church of Christ - Evansville Our own Board of Christian Ministry & Outreach here at Zion was busy during the holiday season! In addition to normal activities such as providing head ushers and communion preparation, the following was accomplished: Canned goods were collected the week before Thanksgiving and on December 9 th, for the Tri State Food Bank. The Giving Wreath was placed in the narthex, with proceeds going to Patchwork Central. It was decided that the loose offering collected on Christmas Eve would be donated to the Veterans of the Cross/Christmas Offering. Hanging of the Greens was held on the last Sunday in November with a large number of volunteers. A signup board for Coffee Hour for 2018 was placed in the narthex. In a recent year, over 100 scrapbookers made it out to Crop For Caring. All proceeds go to the United Caring Services (UCS), who provide food, shelter, and counseling for the homeless. Event organizers say each scrapbooker has a unique project they choose to work on for the day. Whether it s prom from a couple years ago, or a tribute to their son that s serving in the military or some baby pictures, many have them been here year after year, United Caring Services Executive Director Jason Emmerson says. $40 registration fee by January 15 th. 5 Johannes Schaefer one of these newly baptized babies. This young father, just twenty-eight years old, dies on January 5th at 6 a.m. from severe lung illness after receiving Holy Communion. He leaves behind his wife, Gertraud nee Moll, his newly born son, one older child, four brothers and three sisters. He is buried on Epiphany Day, January 6 th at 2 p.m. at Oak Hill, hoping in the final resurrection Whooosh 1893 Once again Zion s Time Machine is whoooshing and whooshing, trying to take us to a church meeting in January, 1868, but nothing comes into view. Are there two feet of snow on the ground? Is the temperature below zero? Did the secretary fail to preserve any minutes? We have no answers. We only know Zion s records contain no minutes of meetings at Zion 150 years ago. For unknown reasons the Council and Congregational meetings are not held until February. It s almost unheard of not to have an Annual Meeting in January. In fact, it s unconstitutional! But life goes on! There are five baptism in January starting with two on January 1 st. 1. Heinrich Eduard Grundtmann 2. Johannes Schaefer (Born on Christmas Day) 3. Caroline Henriette Emilie Schulte 4. August Friedrich Wilhelm Glocke 5. Johann Adam Albert Berg And very tragically life comes to an end for Johann Schaefer, the father of Also very tragically newly baptized Heinrich Eduard Grundmann dies on January 20 th and is buried the next day at Oak Hill. He was born on Christmas Eve, 1867 and baptized on January 1, His grieving parents are Heinrich and Ida (Kiefer) Grundtmann Now Zion s Time Machine whoooshes on to The congregation gathers for its Annual Meeting on January 1 st. Pastor Frick leads an opening devotional of a hymn, scripture reading and prayer. President Hartig opens the meeting with a stern reminder that they are in a very sacred place and that they should maintain order under every circumstance. He reads the rules which require this. This warning may be prompted by some recent grumbling about the pastor. Likewise the report about unpaid pledges hints about this grumbling. Treasurer Rahm s report shows income of $1, in 1867 and expenses of $1,865.68, leaving a balance of $ Three auditors are appointed. Pastor Frick reports that the Synod has organized a Fire Insurance Society and wants to know if Zion will support this project. The matter is turned over to the Church Council. It is reported that the Sunday School project in Independence is

6 struggling with inadequate leadership. The question of its continuance is referred to the Church Council During the elections Mr. Brinker is elected Elder in place of Mr. Fischer, and an exception is made to re-elect Mr. Kattmann to remain Elder. Mr. Carl Braun is unanimously re-elected Secretary and four Council members are elected. Three men are elected to contact those in arrears on their pledges. Finally it is resolved to have a collection for the needy each year at Easter. Adjournment follows with prayer offered by Mr. Fischer. Nick Kissel was born in 1843 in Tubgenheim in Rhine Province. He came to this country in 1862 with his parents, his brothers and sisters in He lived here many years in partnership with his brother, Jacob. He dies after a brief illness at the home of his sister, Mrs. David Becker, on January 2, 1893, 1:45 p.m. at the age of 50 years. He is buried at Oak Hill on January 4 th. Scenes from Christmas 2018 The Church Council meets on January 9 th to reviews the status of the Sunday School in Independence. After a lengthy discussion it is decided that since the school is not making any progress that it be closed for an unspecified amount of time, and that its property be transferred to Mr. Dan Becker for safekeeping. Finally, following a discussion about members in arrears, eight names are stricken from the membership list, while some others are retained in the hopes they will fulfill their obligations. The meeting adjourns. The year 1893 begins with nine baptisms in January, two of them occurring on New Year s Day: 1. Georg Jarl Triftmeier 2. Lina Tille Urban 3. Louis Oskar Huck 4. Johanna Ida Altheide 5. Oskar Friedrich Steinbach 6. Oskar Gottfried Bader 7. August Heinrich Thiemann 8. Anna Flora Mueller 9. Otto Karl Holz Thinking of You...
