3 AT THE ZION CENTER Lunch continues to be served beginning at 11:30 Mondays thru Thursdays! Pay what you can. Second Tuesday Song Circle continues on Tuesday, November 14, from 6 to 8pm Certified Laughter Yoga therapist Tiffany Floyd prepared a class for Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5th, for people to learn *what's so funny*, with a short introduction to the history and benefits of Laughter Yoga and an experience of how good it feels to play and laugh with a bunch of strangers in a group Laughter Yoga class! Laughter Yoga, which originated with a physician in India in 1995, combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing. Anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. Laughter is simulated as a body exercise in a group but with eye contact and childlike playfulness, it soon turns into real and contagious laughter. In India there are thousands of Laughter Yoga clubs that meet every morning in public parks. Club members proudly report that they haven't missed a day in five years or more. They say it makes them happy, healthy and energized-- in effect, it has changed their lives. 4 Three Great Loves and the greatest of these is love. -1 Corinthians 13:13 There may be no greater need today than the need to love love of neighbors, love of children, love of creation. As the United Church of Christ introduced at General Synod recently, our church is being asked to be a partner in the UCC s Three Great Loves initiative an initiative that focuses on Love of Neighbor, Love of Children, and Love of Creation. Zion s UCS meal ministry drew help from quite a distance in October, with Ryan Robertson of Seattle, Washington serving (he was visiting Neal and David for the week). This effort begins with the Love of Neighbor effort. Love of Neighbor is part of a denomination-wide effort that is about engaging the UCC to take action and to show the impact of our congregation, and the UCC, working together as one church, with one voice and one vision a vision of A Just World for All. In the coming months, a portion of our newsletter will focus on loving our neighbor, with examples and ideas from our own and other UCC congregations. Members and friends of Zion UCC in Henderson KY recently marched in the Henderson community s Unity & Diversity Parade.

5 Service and November 24 for the Annual Mission Festival. There is some discussion about the bells recently installed in the new steeple. Then two new members are approved to be received next Sunday: Louis Puster and H. Korde. Evansville s 2017 CROP Walk took place on Saturday, October 28 in downtown Evansville. Individuals from our Zion Church donated a total of $420.00, which will be split among local food banks and the international relief and development work of Church World Service (CWS). Third Quarter 2017 Benevolence Disbursements IN-KY Conference $ Eden Seminary $ Good Samaritan Home $ United Caring Services $ One Great Hour of Sharing 5.00 CROP Walk $ From the Arnold W. Geske Scholarship Fund of Eden Seminary: I am moved beyond words at the generosity of the Arnold W. Geske Scholarship Fund contributors to fund my first year of education at Eden Theological Seminary. My greatest stress at starting this journey was the financial implications to my already financially stressed family. Blessings, love and eternal thanks, -Tamel Vaupel 1867 Whooosh 1892 Through the magic of time travel our Time Machine takes us back to 1867 when the Church Council meets on November 2 nd after having had no meetings for several months. The Council selects November 11 for the Reformation We need to get better acquainted with Mr. Puster who was born in Germany in 1832 and came to America in He spent time in St. Louis, Missouri, Keokuk, Iowa, Quincy, Illinois, and Cincinnati, Ohio learning the trade of a wood-turner. He returned to Missouri and enlisted in the army in 1861, fought in the Civil War, was wounded at Vicksburg and hospitalized for a short time. During his army career he was promoted from private to sergeant and later became captain of his company. He was honorably discharged from the army in 1866, returned to Missouri briefly and then came to Evansville where he entered the furniture business working for two different companies. While in Keokuk he married Hermina Menke in 1856, and they had three children. She died in Two years later he married her sister, Louisa Menke, and they had four children. As the senior partner Puster organized the firm of L. Puster & Company in It became a prominent manufacturer of furniture in Evansville. His partners were John H. Ortmeyer, Hermann G. Menke (brother of Hermina and Louisa), and Leo Kevekordes. A fire destroyed their first building, and in 1887 they built a new factory at the corner of N.W. Sixth and Ingle Streets across from Zion Church. It was described as commodious where 100 men were employed in manufacturing furniture exclusively. Ortmeyer was a member of Zion, and Menke had close family ties with Zion. Some years later Louis Puster transferred to St. Lucas. Over the years this furniture factory has been used for many different purposes, and most recently it has become United Caring Services with various programs for homeless persons. (Some of the preceding information comes from A History of Vanderburgh County published in 1889.) A congregational meeting is held on November 26. During the roll call it is noted that many are absent because of a severe storm and the distance some members must travel. After the reading of the minutes the first order of

6 business concerns the ringing of the bells in the new steeple: Are the new bells a good thing and useful or not? A vote is taken. The result: The bells shall remain the property of the church. A detailed schedule is then approved for bell ringing the evening before services on the Sabbath or special holidays, for funerals and weddings provided the persons do not hold themselves apart from the church. For funerals it shall be tolled until the funeral procession is out of sight. Resolved that those who do not come to church have no right to be tolled at the funeral unless the pastor and one Council member consent to it. An eight member committee is appointed to take up a collection to cover the cost of the bells, this to be completed by January 1 st. The meeting adjourns with a Bible reading and prayer by the pastor. Pastor Schrenk has eight baptisms in November. Except for one, all are infants: 1) Mathilda Sophia Friederika Bauthe 2) Dina Louise Emilie Schroeder 3) Clara Dorothea Decker 4) Wilhelm Martini 5) Hermann Wilhelm Hasenjaeger 6) Johann Louis Pepper 7) Ida Gerhardt 8) Elisabeth Helena Gerhardt Leopold Baechle from Baden and Bertha Kuehn from Prussia are united in marriage on November 26 th. Johann Heinrich Hesemann, not quite two months old, dies on November 1 st and is buried two days later at Oak Hill. His parents are Ernst and Sophia (Nussmeier) Hesemann. Henriette Wilhelmine Ottohemming, at the age of one year and two months, dies on November 12 th and is buried the next day at Oak Hill. She is the daughter of Wilhelmine Ottohemming and was baptized in Germany. Her father served for many years in the German army and is deceased. Wilhelm Hinspeter, Sr. dies on November 13 at the age of 64 years. He was born in 1803 in Muhlenberg, Schwerin. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his wife (Gertraudt Fabrii) of 40 years, two sons, two daughters, six grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Now Zion s Time Machine whoooshes ahead 25 years, and we are at a Church Council meeting on November 26, We hear the members read Hymn 186 and the pastor s reading of 2 Peter 3:3-14. Next Mr. Meckstroth expresses his desire to resign from the Council. His responsibilities are transferred to Mr. E. Rahm. A list of 21 new members is read, and this includes three widows. Members who are in arrears have been asked to fulfill their obligations before Christmas so that all bills can be paid. The Council gives permission to the Deaconess Association to hold their meeting on the last Monday evening in November in the School Hall. The meeting adjourns with a closing prayer by Mr. Kattmann.
