Sunday Discussion All are welcome to join our Minister of Music as we continue our informal discussion following worship. It is a guided sharing of reactions and inspirations related to the sermon, scripture readings, prayers, responses, hymns and musical selections. It will hopefully help participants draw deeper connections between our worship and how our worship experience impacts our daily living, and our lives as individuals and as a church community, while getting to know each other better. We keep the discussion to around 30 minutes and gather in the back pews after greeting fellow worshipers. Thinking of You... Allen Thornton Brentwood Nursing & Rehab 30 E. 2 A Church of Extravagant Welcome Who Are We in the UCC? (from the UCC web site) The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a distinct and diverse community of Christians that come together as one church to join faith and action. With over 5,000 churches and nearly one million members across the U.S., the UCC serves God in the cocreation of a just and sustainable world. The UCC is a church of firsts, a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where " they may all be one" (John 17:21). The Church of Firsts Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities. The UCC's many "firsts" mean that we have inherited a tradition of acting upon the demands of our faith. When we read in Galatians: "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" a demand is made upon us. And so we were the first historically white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement. Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country. Today, we continue to change lives throughout the world. We work alongside more than 200 mission partners. We labor ceaselessly to fight injustice, in the United States and abroad. We instill our vision into our youth and young adults, forging leaders who will imagine new dreams. And we sustain and develop church leaders, pastors, and our local churches to live their faith in exciting new ways. We believe in a God that is still speaking, a God that is all-loving and inclusive. We are a church that welcomes and accepts everyone as they are, where your mind is nourished as much as your soul. We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world. Every once in a while, it is important to remember and reflect upon our roots, who we are and what we are a part of as a community of faith. We have a courageous and faithful heritage in the United Church of Christ. In times of challenge, doubt or confusion, it helps to remember that we are part of something much bigger. As we look to the future of Zion, where do you see our faith guiding us? How will we continue to make a difference by being a revelation of the Realm of God, the unconditional love of God here in the middle of downtown Evansville? What has God revealed to you and how can you share it with others? Can we pray together, meditate together and give shape to a vision for the coming years? God s Dream for Zion is waiting to be more fully discerned. Blessings & Peace,

4 Thanks From Kay Hummel: Thank you everyone who supported the Labyrinth Full Moon events this summer. Creating a version here in the park at Zion UCC was a tremendous support for my programs. It does provide a window of conversation, food for the squirrels and birds, as well as a meditational space for anyone at anytime of the day or even night. During September I will be focusing on my course, Conversations with Your Heart by starting a cover design contest for the personal Heart Response Guidebook. The top prize is $ and the announcements are in and around Zion Center. It is open to anyone and the final judging takes place in Common Ground during the month of November. There are scheduled times I will be in Common Ground in September, to share a core aspect of what I term, the Connection of Agreement Process (COA Process). I have developed this process and course much the same way an Iron Chef develops their own set of skills, through studying the techniques of various teachers eventually re-shaping all into in a new format. To date (a bit over one year), everyone who has followed instructions as taught has left empowered in a new level of connection with their life s story. The window of understanding their part and it relevance in developing the quality of life in today s world grows clearer with each insight. Feedback from those who continue to use in understanding their life today respond with, Yes, still of value. Yes, still would recommend. I hope to see you soon! -Kay Special Offerings Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry (CAIM). Twothirds of this offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries (JWM) to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. Neighbors in Need grants are awarded to UCC churches and organizations doing justice work in their communities. These grants fund projects whose work ranges from direct service to community organizing and advocacy to address systemic injustice. This year, special consideration will be given to projects focusing on serving our immigrant neighbors and communities. Consider joining our walk in Evansville on Saturday morning, October 27th. Details will be provided next month.
