All Masons from Entered Apprentice to Master Masons are encouraged to attend. This forum will lay the groundwork for future forums as well as create a Master Plan for Temecula Catalina Island Lodge #524. We will become a place where like minded men can gather and exchange ideas about how to improve our community, local cities, state and nation, rather than a place where we just initiate, pass and raise Masons and then go home. Temecula Catalina Island Masonic Lodge #524 will become the template that other Lodges, near and far, will use to accomplish the same objectives. Please attend this very important Masonic Forum because we need your ideas and help. We will have hamburgers and hot dogs at 6:00 PM, just before the forum. I ask the Brothers to join with me and Michael Coe to help make this happen. You will begin to see changes in our activities and physical facility to accommodate this transformation. At our next Stated Meeting, October 4, 2010, the Mayor of Temecula, Jeff Commerchero, will speak to the Lodge and our ladies. We will have Stated Meeting dinner as usual at 6:00 PM, followed by the Mayor s presentation on the State of and Future of the City of Temecula. If, as a Mason, you only attend a few meetings a year, this is one you won t want to miss. Dinner will be complimentary, but I ask you to please call Tom Hafeli or respond to the evite for this event or, which you should have already received, and respond yes or no and whether your significant other is coming. There will be an activity for the ladies following Jeff s presentation and while we conduct our Stated Meeting. I am very excited about what is happening to our Lodge. If you haven t been to Lodge lately, please come and see for yourself. It s always more fun to be involved, so I invite you to join in and help with this transformation. We want our Lodge to be much more than just a place to confer degrees and go home. Master

2 From the West Brothers, If you ve been to lodge lately, you know there is a buzz in the air! If you look at past issues of the Trestleboard or at other lodges Trestleboards, one common request is always prevalent - a plea for more attendance. Over the past year or so, we ve realized simply asking doesn t get the job done. Your lodge leadership has been extensively discussing this and to no great surprise we have concluded that in order for you to give up time with your family on a Monday night, there needs to be some value received from your attendance. This is where the buzz is coming from. We are putting together value that not only gets brothers back in the lodge but makes it desirable for interested men in the community to want to belong. We are an active lodge and we continually each month receive multiple requests for information and membership, so multiple degrees every Monday night is not going away any time soon. However, we will make sure that everyone s Masonic experience is enriched at every step of their Journey. We will not only be raising brothers, but more importantly raising awareness in the lodge and the community. Recently one of our brothers was speaking with city leaders and they informed him that there was no knowledge that we were even here in Temecula or of what we do! We are in the first stages of our lodge s transformation marks our 21st year on the mainland. The 21st year in a person s life is usually considered the year of coming of age. Our lodge has been through a tremendous journey since it left Catalina, and this year and its transformation signifies Temecula Catalina Island 524 s year of Coming of Age! There are many aspects of this transformation in the works and I won t spend a lot of time here going through them all. Worshipful Ron has already alluded to some, but at this time I ll revert back to the traditional plea and ask that you come back, come by your lodge and see what s happening - meet with Ron or myself and discuss how this transformation can affect your Masonic journey. It s time for you to allow yourself to Masonicaly Come of Age and be a part of the Fraternity again, for we are all created by one almighty parent and inhabitants of the same planet, and we are taught to aid, support, and protect each other. This message we will reinforce within ourselves and carry out with vigor into the community. Bro. - Senior Warden Bethel 187 Report After a few months off for summer break, we are back into the swing of things. The month of September brought us lots of excitement. Ten years ago on Labor Day weekend, our bethel was born, under the oaks at the Liefer Ranch. We were the newest Bethel in California and are now one of the strongest. Thank you so much for your ongoing support of Job's Daughters here in Temecula. How many of you remember that special day in 2000? We've been quite busy during the month. We visited with the Lodge at their Stated Meeting dinner, went roller skating, welcomed in some new adults, had four adults become Certified Adult Volunteers (including two guys from the Lodge), and helped the Claremont, Sun City, and Hemet bethels with initiations. We are looking forward to a garage sale on Saturday, October 2nd. If you have anything you'd like to donate, please bring it with you to Lodge. We are looking forward to seeing you in October. 5 Compasses As in Operative Freemasonry, the compasses are used for the measurement of the architect s plans, and to enable him to give those just proportions which will ensure beauty as well as stability to his work; so, in Speculative Freemasonry, is this important implement symbolic of that even tenor of deportment, that true standard of rectitude which alone can bestow happiness here and felicity hereafter. Hence are the compasses the most prominent emblem of virtue, the true and only measure of a Freemason s life and conduct. As the Bible gives us light on our duties to God, and the square illustrates our duties to our neighborhood and Brother, so the compasses give that additional light which is to instruct, us in the duty we owe to ourselves the great, imperative duty of circumscribing our passions, and keeping our desires within due bounds. "It is ordained," says the philosopher Burke, "in the eternal constitution of things, that men of intemperate passions cannot be free; their passions forge their fetters." Those Brethren who delight to trace our emblems to an astronomical origin, find in the compasses a symbol of the sun, the circular pivot representing the body of the luminary, and the diverging legs his rays. In the earliest rituals of the eighteenth century, the compasses are described as a part of the furniture of the Lodge, "and are said to belong to the Master." Some change will be found in this respect in the ritual of the present day. The word is sometimes spelled and pronounced compass, which is more usually applied to the magnetic needle and circular dial or card of the mariner from which he directs his course over the seas, or the similar guide of the airman when seeking his destination, across unknown territory.
