1 P H I B E T A L A M B D A Igniting Innovation Summer 2013 IL PBL Newsletter Inside this issue: State Leadership Conference Competitive Event Winners Dreaming with A Task Force Reflections on the Year 5 SIUC Update A Message from our President Hello PBL Members! I just wanted to take a minute to not only thank everyone who came out to the State Leadership Conference, but also to congratulate everyone. If you went to SLC, you were more than just a PBL member. You went out of your way to be involved in an organization that can do amazing things for you, if only you take the little extra steps. So no matter if you took home an award, or if you just walked away with the amazing memories, I hope you enjoyed the experience and you all deserve a congratulations. I look forward to seeing many of you in California where we can compete in our events, tour Anaheim, soak up some sun, splash in the water, and hopefully get as many Illinois members as possible up on that stage for placing in the top 10! Have a great end of your semester and good luck at Nationals! Heather Borowiak Illinois PBL State President

4 Page 4 By: Stuart Maue SWIC Dreaming with a Task Force Since joining Phi Beta Lambda my freshman year of college, it seems like every local, state and national meeting has been plagued with the same question; how are we going to grow in membership? And I get it, it doesn t matter if you are running the FFA, FBLA, or even the FBI, organizations need people. But if you are seriously having challenges growing in membership, your problem is most likely rooted in one of two things: the quality of your leadership, or the clarity of your vision. Let s face it, there is no shortage of people at your school, but you can march around the campus with a megaphone and people still won t follow you if they don t relate to what you are saying. If potential members don t connect with your vision, you might as well put the megaphone down because, as Emerson would say, Who you are speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you are saying. People are motivated by three things: material success, recognition and respect, and at the deepest level, purpose and legacy. If your vision fails to inspire others to join at one of those three levels, nothing you say will convince them to join you. Do you have a vision? In the words of Andy Stanley, Leaders provide a mental image of a preferred future and then ask people to follow them there. An organization has to have a vision of where it is headed before it can expect others to join. In a sense, quality leaders do everything in reverse. Before he or she begins recruiting others to a cause, they must first establish a purpose for bringing others together. That is why a vision is so important. A captivating vision has a magnetizing factor; not only does it compel like-minded people to join a cause, but it unifies them once they ve met. When things get tough, an inspiring mental image of a coming future might be the only thing that keeps your team together. Maybe that s why Proverbs 29:18 says, Where there is no vision, the people parish. But one thing is for sure, where there is no vision; there will be people to lead. Is your vision too small? If your vision for the future is not big enough for everyone to get involved, there is no reason to ask others to help you. Why join a team if you don t get a place in the action? That s like spending the summer at football camp so you can warm the bench all season. Every now and then you need to get in the game. If there are members of your team who never get to play, your vision is too small. A small vision is the biggest waste of potential there is. One of leaderships most endearing qualities is its ability to provide ordinary people a chance to do the extraordinary. Josie Bisset said Dreams come a size too big so we can grow into them. I am not asking you to throw out an unrealistic goal you have no chance of reaching, but the best visions are the ones that can only be realized if everyone works together. Is your vision off the mark? Let s face it, if a person s idea of excellence was to make as much money as they could selling cookies, they would join the girl scouts. Leadership calls for creativity. If you don t have the imagination to come up with goals worth setting, you have no hope of growing an organization. You have to convince your members that the organization is not a waste of time, and an entire semester of nothing but bake sales and going to conferences is not desirable. Having said that, there is a new wine, old bottle effect that takes place when you present a new vision to people who are not used to the pressure. That is why I like to call leadership a study in managed frustration. A person s responsibility as a leader is to create an environment where success can thrive, that often involves removing people detrimental to the vision. If you can remove the source of problems without upsetting the environment, you can set goals as lofty as you would like. Quality people are the hardest to find, easiest to lose and most expensive resources on the planet. That s why any successful CEO will tell you their greatest assets are the right employees. But with an inspiring vision, a good leader should have no problem attracting the right people to their cause. If you want more members, give them something to do. A captivating vision has a magnetizing factor; not only does it compel like-minded people to join a cause, but it unifies them once they ve met. - Stuart Maue

5 Summer 2013 Page 5 By: Heather Borowiak IL PBL State President Reflections on the Year Well it s that time of year again, the time of year that I always seem to have a love/hate relationship with. For the years that I have not had summer classes, I love it because it is almost time for a bit of a break when it comes to school. It is a time when I can look forward to sunshine, bonfires, pools, family, and freedom. However, it can be a sad or stressful time of year too. It s stressful because we know we have exams coming up. I always seem to have projects or presentations during this time of year and this is the time of year I always seem to monitor my grades like a hawk. It is also sad because when we re in college, there is always someone leaving this time of year. Either someone is transferring to another school, or this is their final semester. Even though you wish them the best of luck and you hope they achieve their goals, you know you re going to miss having class with them and seeing them on a regular basis. I think these are the reasons that I become so reminiscent during this time of year. I like to look back at the year (when I should probably be working on that big project or presentation no doubt) and think about all the wonderful things that have happened, all the fabulous people I have met, and all of the amazing experiences I shall forever remember. Every year, those amazing memories always involve PBL. I always meet the best people and we always have perfect little moments together that I know will stay in my heart forever. I remember on the morning of Fall Seminar Series, I was suddenly so nervous to have my first appearance as the State President. Sure I had been working and attending events with that title all summer, but I hadn t been in front of my state chapter yet. I was so worried that everyone would think they had made a mistake in allowing me to fill this position or you would think I was some kind of buffoon who didn t know much. But, as far as I know, you didn t think that, but even if you did, I was able to gain a little more confidence that day. I had a wonderful time at Fall Seminar Series and it was great to rekindle old friendships, as well as begin new ones. All year was filled with moments like that one, where I was surrounded by people who are supportive, caring, and passionate about PBL and their fellow members. Now some join PBL for the resume bonus, but for those of us who are already involved, we know that we stay for the people involved in PBL. The people are who make this organization run smoothly every year and they re the reason you want to come back for more. It always makes me so proud when I see those same people grow. Because I worked so closely with the state officer team, I notice their growth immediately. Each one of them has changed for the better over the year. They have all taught me something and touched my heart in their own way. As for the local members, I see growth there as well. I have enjoyed getting to know you and what you have done for your local chapter. If we allow PBL to teach us and change us, it will. We just have to give it the chance. I am so grateful that you gave me the chance to lead as president last year and that you have decided to allow me to do the same this coming year. I am hopeful that this year will be even better than last year in that we are all able to grow even more. I am thankful for the time we have had together this year and I am looking forward to what is to come this year! I am hopeful that this year will be even better than last year in that we are all able to grow even more. - Heather Borowiak

After editing our by-laws and making fewer officer positions, we decided to compensate by also breaking down the rest of our team into committees. This gives everyone an opportunity to be extra involved by chairing a committee and participating in the planning of social, volunteer, and fundraising events. Thus far, we have been able to hold one social and also conduct a very successful fundraiser for our chapter. Our next big event is coming up this weekend, and it will be a social as well as a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. We are excited to be hosting this event and hope to make it a semi-annual occurrence! These were just a few of the changes and growths our chapter has accomplished this year, but with State and Nationals quickly approaching we are sure to achieve many more!
