Kenilworth Church PC(USA) Faith, Love, Action September, 2015 Faith Fall A s September begins, we enter into the busy season of the church year. We also look forward to a beautiful fall season --especially wonderful in our sacred mountains. In a very exciting way, two events collide: fall and faith. Fall brings our community intense colors and cool days. This season of faith calls us into exciting activities and experiences that offer ways to grow deeper into our faith journey. It is my prayer that we will do both: reach into the world offering the love of God to all and reach deeper into ourselves and find a greater understanding of what it means to be called by Christ. The Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 34: O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. During this active time of the year, may we see what God has done in creation and offer this to a world in need. The Psalms he Psalms are often considered the prayer book and hymnbook of T God s people. Beginning with the history of Israel, through the birth of the church, and continuing today, people of faith have sung, prayed and meditated on the psalms. They have used the psalms for corporate worship and for individual devotions. During the next four weeks, we will be focusing on some of these psalms in worship. We invite you to use some of the ones listed below for your daily devotion. You may want to read them aloud or silently or even sing them. We will be doing the same together on Sundays. Suggested Psalms for reading and meditation in preparation for Sunday worship: September 20 Blessing of the Animals Psalms 104, 144, 148 September 27 Psalms of Lament Psalms 13, 22, 130 October 4 World Communion Sunday Psalm 133 October 11 Psalms of Thanksgiving Psalms 100, 113, 150 * Edna September 5 p.m. opportunity, see page 3 For Your Calendar Memorial Garden workday, volunteer September 2 p.m. Bill Chater Memorial Service, reception to follow, see page 2 September 20 Blessing of the Pets, see last page October 9:30 a.m. World Communion Service with Land of Sky UCC, pot luck luncheon to follow October 4 p.m. - Mary Virella and Jason Minton Wedding and Reception. 2 Bill Chater Editor Note: Bill Chater of our KPC family passed away on August 30. The following is Bill s obituary from the Asheville Citizen Times. A Memorial Service will be held at KPC at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 19th. William "Bill" Adams Chater died away surrounded by his loving family on August 30, 2015 in Asheville NC. He was 79. Bill was born July 21, 1936, in Brooklyn, NY, to William Guy Chater and Janet Conklin Chater. He graduated from the Mount Hermon School and received an undergraduate degree and an MBA from Cornell University. Bill married Betsy Coddington in His fifty-year career in the insurance industry can best be described with the words serving, giving, and accomplishing. He was President of the Charlotte, Western North Carolina, and North Carolina Association of Life Underwriters. He was also president of the Western NC Health Underwriters, which he helped found, as well as president of the Charlotte Association of General Agents & Managers. Several of these organizations achieved national recognition during his tenure. Bill was recognized as Advisor of the Year by the Western NC and North Carolina Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and was very active in the Chartered Life Underwriter societies and Estate Planners councils in Charlotte and western NC. While a recognized leader in the industry, Bill is best remembered as a teacher and helper -educating and encouraging hundreds of agents as a Life Underwriter Training Council instructor, an adjunct faculty instructor at Appalachian State University, and continuing education author and instructor, and through his daily assistance to agencies and individual agents throughout North and South Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Bill enjoyed doing anything with family, children, and grandchildren; loved to travel; enjoyed racquet sports and was a particularly lethal handball player; and had a lifelong and Zenlike reverence for trout fishing. He was very active in Kenilworth Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and choir member, and was a strong supporter of the United Way. Bill is survived by his wife Betsy, his son Bill, Jr. and his wife Rebecca, his daughter Missy Greer and her husband Frank, and his special stepson Christopher King and his wife Jennifer. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren Katie, Riley, Zeke, Eli and Caleb. He was also survived by his sister Debby Richman (Peter) of New Jersey and his brother Mike Chater (Maude) of Vermont. A memorial service will be held September 19, 2015, at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church at 2 PM, with a reception immediately following. Memorials may be made to Kenilworth Presbyterian Church (123 Kenilworth Rd, Asheville, NC 28803) or Loving Foods Resources (PO box 25142, Asheville, NC 28813), in the name of William Chater. Groce Funeral Home on Tunnel Road is assisting the Chater family. CLICK HERE to view the online. From the Editor: Bill Chater was a leader in our Church. He was an Elder. Even when he wasn t on Session, he was involved and active. He was a behind the scene Memorial Garden angel. He blessed us with his voice by singing in the choir and as a solo he sang the powerful song Let There Be Peace on Earth (and Let It Begin with Me) at our August 10 worship service. "Let There Be Peace On Earth" by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson And let it begin with me. The peace that was meant to be. With God as our father Brothers all are we. Let me walk with my brother In perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me Let this be the moment now. With every step i take Let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment And live each moment With peace eternally. Let ther be peace on earth, And let it begin with me. And let it begin with me. The peace that was meant to be. With god as our father Brothers all are we. Let me walk with my brother In perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me Let this be the moment now. With every step I take Let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment And live each moment In peace eternally. And let it begin with ME. Most recently he spearheaded a seminar series on End of Life Issues. As it happened, Bill was dealing with those issues personally. He opened our eyes to the End of Life issues that most of us avoid thinking about and by his example of courage and faith, he inspired us all.

Worship Committee Requests Your Feedback/Input s part of our ongoing effort A to design worship to be more inviting and meaningful experience for our visitors, as well as our members, the Worship Committee has suggested some minor changes to our standard order of service. We implemented them the first Sunday in September. As always, your feedback and/or input is welcome. Please share your take on the changes and/or your ideas with Allen, Chuck, Bob Williams, Sally or Edna. e will have the second W monthly prayer circle on September 15th at noon. Last month 10 people joined the prayer circle. We prayed for those in need, our church and our members, and anything that was on someone's heart. Please join us on the 15th. We prayed, had a wonderful fellowship and even had a little snack! Prayer is an important part of our Christian life, and KPC has a giant heart for praying for all. - Millie Prayer Circle Please CLICK on the logo above and sign up to follow Kenilworth Church on Facebook OR go to kenilworthchurchl. Building Loan Status he building loan approved T by the congregation on August 9 is on its way. On Sept. 10, the note for our loan was signed and mailed to Presbyterian Investment & Loan, Inc. We should be receiving the loan funds into our Building Fund account soon to help with the next year of the 7-year plan projects that continue to be addressed. Editor Note: See the August Newsletter for details of the plan objectives. New Doors Installed ew choir room doors have N been installed. These doors were needed to keep sound in and for energy efficiency. Also, a new and wider door has been installed at the downstairs rest room making it accessible for wheelchairs. Events, Birthdays and Anniversaries: See the Kenilworth Church Calendar prepared monthly by Katie Adams. Copies in the narthex starting the first Sunday and online at Memorial Garden Workday Change of Scheduled Workday e've had a September 22 W workday planned for several weeks, not knowing that there would be a memorial service on September 19. I walked the garden with Linda and Calvin this morning to discuss the work that we hoped to accomplish. We decided that it would be better if we accomplished it before Bill's service this Saturday, so we rescheduled the workday for this Friday (9/18) at 5:00 PM. I know that many of you will not be able to reschedule planned activities to make a Friday workday and that some cannot come at 5. Please come when and if you can. We are going to try to accomplish as much as we can before sundown on Friday. But we will need volunteers to get it done. Please bring your implements of destruction (and other tools) and we'll see what we can do to make the place presentable for Betsy on Saturday and the Blessing of the Pets the following day. If we can get this done there will be no workday on Tuesday the 22nd and we will probably cancel the workday in October as well. MIKE

Season of Peace Path of Peace Holton Brown s KPC Send Off to College he KPC Congregation em- T braces Holton as Rev. Smith prays. Best Wishes to Holton on his entrance into college. Introduction his year s Path of Peace Reflections are based on the T themes and stories being shared in the 2015 Peace and Global Witness Offering. Writers were recruited for each week to help us explore the following areas: Week 1: Peace in the Family/ Nonviolence in our Households Week 2: Peace in the Community and Neighborhood Week 3: A Human-rights Lens for our Peacemaking Week 4: We ar e Str onger Together Considering our Systems and Structures Individuals and households are invited to make use of these daily reflections beginning on Sunday, September 6, and concluding on World Communion Sunday, October 4. Adams and Banes Attend Conference atie and Gus Adams and Edna and Warren Banes attended the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr preaching at Montreat! Mon- K treat celebrated the event by hosting a conference titled: Dr. King s Unfinished Agenda : A Teach-In for Rededicating Ourselves to The Dream. The conference was held over 3 days and some of the most influential civil rights leaders in the world were in attendance speaking, signing books and preaching! I had the most amazing experience and got to see some of my personal heroes! I am pictured here with Rep. John Lewis. Dr. Barber and Rep. Lewis held a memorial service for their dear friend and civil rights legend Julian Bond who had recently passed away. I cried many tears over the weekend because my soul was so deeply stirred by this event. I am so grateful for the work being done here at Kenilworth! - Katie

New Members Norma and Dick Warren are the newest members of Kenilworth Church. On September 6, Rev. Smith performed the profession of faith ceremony followed by a warm welcoming from the congregation. The Warrens have been attending KPC for about 5 years. Thanks for taking that next step. The Choir is Back (L-R) John Elenburg, Patrick Ryan, Ralph Staschke, Nancy Dillingham, Shirley Mathis, Mitzi Shamble, Bob Williams, Polly Johnson and Chuck Lockwood (Music Director). Chuck says To join us, just come to the choir room at 10:15 on Sunday mornings. Fellowship Time ach Sunday we have fellowship time in the nar- E thex following our Service. We need volunteers to provide snacks for fellowship time. Snacks can be as simple or as complex as you would like. You can sign up for one Sunday or a month. The sign up sheet is in the Narthex. Thank you for doing this. -Bob Craddock Tourist New Pitcher, Julian Marbut Our own Julian Marbut, a super Tourist fan, was selected to throw out the first pitch of the Asheville Tourists last home game of the 2015 season.

Session Elder Nomination Process ur Church has a governing body known as the Session, which consists of nine Active Elders elected by the congregation, usually O with a "class" of three being elected each year. Each active elder may serve a term of three years and is eligible for reelection to serve a second three-year term. After serving two consecutive terms, under normal circumstances, one must then be off Session for at least a year. (In the Presbyterian U.S.A. church, once elected and ordained as an elder, always an elder, but those currently serving on Session are called "active elders.") The Session usually meets once per month, with the pastor serving as a non-voting moderator. The agenda usually involves consideration of policy and/or budgetary matters, hearing of committee reports, and taking of actions deemed to be in the best interest of the Church and its mission. Current Elders are: Gus Adams, Millie Bruns, Mike Cox, Bob Craddock, Steve Hill, Sally Martin, Don Peterson, Jeff Scoltock and Calvin Underwood. Those whose terms expire at the end of 2015 are Jeff Scoltock, Sally Martin and Don Peterson. The 2015 Nominating Committee will meet during September to select proposed slates. One slate will be for 2016 Session vacancies. The other slate will be for three positions on a five-member 2016 Nominating Committee. (Two of the members are appointed by Session from its membership, including the chairperson.) Anyone interested in serving on either body can make it known to any member of the current Nominating Committee: Calvin Underwood, chairperson; Bill Johnson, Judy Taylor, Bob Williams, and Shirley Mathis. The slate of nominees will be presented for consideration at a Congregation meeting to be held in November. Shirley Mathis Elected to Nominating Committee t the August 30 Congregation meeting, Shirley A Mathis was elected to the Nominating Committee. Shirley has been a KPC member since 1960, is an Elder, has been in our choir continuously, and has served our Church in a number of other capacities. Her personal ministry is recognizing birthdays and Communion with her delicious sour dough bread. Millie Bruns to Attend Church Leadership Program illie Bruns has been endorsed by our Session and M has enrolled in the Church Leadership Program with the Presbytery of WNC. It begins in September and provides 170+ hours of training and class work over 2 years. Best Wishes, Millie, on your new training. he Asheville Period Project T collects and distributes feminine hygiene products to homeless and low income women in Asheville. Feminine hygiene products are distributed for free and with no questions asked. Feminine hygiene products are expensive and cannot be purchased with SNAP (food stamp) benefits! These products are vital for seeking employment and attending school and often women are arrested for shoplifting these items. We seek to meet the unique needs of women by providing Period Kits rather than individual tampons and pads. A kit has everything a woman needs to manage her period for the month. The kit includes a mix of tampons, pads, feminine wipes and disposable bags. Please donate to the project so that we may serve the most vulnerable in our city.
