1 Kenilworth Church PC(USA) Faith, Love, Action Summer, 2017 From Our Pastor he lectionary for T this week offers the reader a passage from the gospel of Matthew. After reading the passage, I returned to the opening statement: Immediately, he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side The passage goes on to tell the story of Jesus walking on water. It is a powerful passage. Yet, I am also moved by the opening line. Jesus commands his disciples to get into a boat and go. Obviously, the disciples did as Jesus asked. At first glance, it looks like a simple request. It could be easily overlooked. Nevertheless, it is a powerful statement of faith. What does it take for a person to follow the commandments of our Lord even the simple ones? Perhaps, before we can behold the miracle, we are called to engage in the seemingly ordinary. In other words, before we can walk on water, we must get into the boat. We are sent into the world to take that first step into faith again and again. Many times we hope our faith journey will be announced by angels and trumpets, but most of the time there is a quiet nudge to do a simple task. Yet that simple task can change the world and our lives. Let us remember that many times the simple acts of life reflects the glory of our God. Welcome New Members elcome to Kenilworth W Church s newest members: Hazel McRorie grew up in Pickens, SC. She obtained her RN from Greenville General Hospital and shortly after joined the Army serving as a nurse during WWII. 2 The Civil Rights Tourist in Richmond By Katie Adams I am a self described "Civil Rights Tourist" and love learning about civil rights history in the towns that I visit. On a recent trip to Richmond, Virginia I sought out this marker commemorating the Richmond 34 who desegregated the lunch counters in Richmond. How cool to see North Carolina mentioned on the marker! It was very striking to me to see this small sign commemorating such a huge event in a city that has massive monuments devoted to memorializing the Civil War. Let me know if you want to dig deeper into this conversation. I have some great ideas for us to explore this fall. Do you want to take a HoodHuggers tour of Asheville? Explore the PC(USA) resources for Facing Racism? I am excited to be on this journey towards creating the beloved community with you. - Katie Asheville Period Project n Tuesday, July 18 I represented the Asheville Period O Project at a Asheville Sex Worker Outreach Program (ASWOP) event. What a powerhouse of agencies that came together to support women and men in our community that often have very little access to resources. I was joined by Western North Carolina AIDS Project, Buncombe Co. Health Dept. Our Voice, Mission Hospital, Church of the Advocate and more! We offered food, HIV and HEP C testing, legal counsel, hygiene products, condoms and Naloxone to anyone in need. Please continue to support the Asheville Period Project it is doing so much good in the community. - Katie Kenilworth Center Guests Mommy and Me! Group: ommy and Me! is a group M for women with post partum depression to meet weekly for support and a baby play date. The group is led by a Registered Nurse and is held every Thursday from 1-3pm in Kenilworth Center. Please invite anyone you know that may be interested in this wonderful support group. - Katie Hollywood comes to Kenilworth Church! Sort of... A group of student film makers were filming in Kenilworth and used the Kenilworth Center as one of their filming locations. How cool! - Katie he Summer Praise Sing is T drawing to a close (Aug 27th is our last one) so that could only mean one thing. Choir is about to start back up. Sept. 3rd will be our first rehearsal in the choir room at 10:15am. All voices and age groups are welcome. It promises to be an exciting season. - Chuck Choir News Lectionary Readings Continued from page one August 20 Psalm 133 Matt. 15: August 27 Romans 12: 1-8 Matt. 16:13-20 Sept. 3 Romans 12: 9-21 Matt. 16: Sept 10 Romans 13:8-14 Matt. 18: Sept. 17 Romans 14:1-12 Matt. 18:21-35 Sept. 24 Psalm 105:1-6, 37-45Matt. 20:1-16

3 Kenilworth Church Women s Group enilworth Church women have not taken a vacation this summer, but have continued to meet occasionally for K fellowship and study. On June 4th, the women planned and led an exciting and meaningful Pentecost worship service in which we celebrated the gifts of the Spirit and of women. On June 19th, we concluded our yearlong Bible study, Who Is Jesus?. Later this fall we will begin regular Bible study again using Cloud of Witnesses: the Community of Christ in Hebrews. This past Saturday (August 12) we gathered in the Kenilworth Center for several hours of fellowship, food, and Bible study. Dot Descieux and Linda Underwood prepared our lunch. Tina Joyner talked about Presbyterian Women, the national organization in which we are now participating. We then joined in a lively discussion of the book of Esther. Our next gathering will be our fall kickoff on Monday, September 25th, 5:30 in the Kenilworth Center. We will share a meal and make plans for Bible study and service activities in the months ahead. This has been an exciting year for the women at Kenilworth. Our Bible study has grown in numbers. We have grown in knowledge of each other and God. We have laughed, learned, and supported one another through joyful and difficult times. We look forward to another exciting year and encourage all women to join us. - Edna

4 Landscaping Projects he rear T walk renovations have been a bit of a mystery to most, but everyone that comes in next to the Kenilworth Center now knows what we were doing. There s still a bit of cleanup and we will, as a church, be working on mulch, plantings and grass. Much thanks to Dick Warren for getting this started. We will be installing rails at the LFR/Sanctuary foyer and we are planning to rebuild the deck and rails that lead to the LFR office. In many ways the access to all three buildings has been greatly improved, but you will need to watch your step until the work is complete. In a related matter, the wall being constructed by Tucker, scouts and Richard has been completed. The wall facilitates improved handicap parking and a service entrance for LFR. LFR is making good use of the new access. With the completion of the wall we are turning our attention to repaving the handicap parking area between the wall and the Kenilworth Center entrance. Thanks, Tucker. The electrical work with new panels, switchgear, exit signs and underground electrical service is complete. Power to the church has been installed underground on the north side of the church. There are more electrical issues to address and the new electrical service provides for additional safety upgrades and the expansion of electrical systems throughout the church. Repairs to the lawn are planned for the fall. The Memorial Garden committee is entertaining landscape plans for the Memorial Garden and will have a plan for the church s consideration by the end of the summer. One of the committee goals is to begin the first phase of garden improvements with fall plantings. While building repairs continue, the church is beginning to address building improvements. Towards that end, the Property & Finance Committee will be working closely with the Worship Committee to ensure that building improvements facilitate the church s worship and mission goals. The church has navigated numerous transitions over its history and is continuing today with exciting prospects for the future. Those efforts are made all the better by your participation in steering the church. Join in and make your voice heard. - Mike Cox Handicap Parking Retaining Wall T ucker Gerringer has completed his work (his Eagle Scout project) on the wall adjacent to the Kenilworth Center. The wall will be an integral part of handicapped parking and deliver better access to KPC. The Eagle Scout project is meant to accomplish the following: management, organization, task assignment, preparation, and action. The Scouts credo teaches preparedness in the face of obstacles. While performing the task, Tucker learned that it always rains when everyone is ready to work and that it is always sunny (good working weather) when most families would rather be taking vacations. Thus, Murphy s Law prevailed, but Tucker did it all aided by his grandfather Richard Glenn s fortuitous ownership of a backhoe! Tucker has also built a lot of memories at the church in the last sixteen years, including taking part in time with the children and his playing of taps in national remembrances. We at the church celebrate Tucker and his valuable contribution of the wall. Thanks, Tucker! - Nancy Dillingham and Richard Glenn - Photo by Sally Martin

5 Vacation Bible School PC hosted Vacation Bible K School the week of June 26. It was a huge success. We had several churches in attendance throughout the week. We had wonderful crafts, food and fun throughout the week. We had around 30 to 40 children each day and about 90 to 95 people attended in total. We learned about how we can shine our light into the world during the week. Overall we had a great time learning about the Lord. - Mary Virella-Minton LFR Affair in White Success oving Food Resources celebrates annual Affair In L White! The annual Affair in White fundraiser for Loving Food Resources was a HUGE success! The "Affair" was held on the top floor of the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville on August 12. This year s attendance was the biggest ever and thousands of dollars were raised to feed individuals living with HIV/AIDS and anyone in hospice care in WNC. Attendees enjoyed cocktails, heavy hors d'oeuvres, music by KPC's very own Profe$$ah G and a live and silent auction. What a great way to party with a purpose! - Katie The Thunderstorm by Shirley Mathis t started as a bright sunny day, I the sun was out, the sky was blue, the birds were singing, a slight breeze gently moved the leaves on the trees. Gradually the sky became overcast, then the clouds darkened, and a low rumble was barely audible in the far distance. A robin chirped its warning call that a storm was approaching. The birds became quiet as they busily sought shelter. The thunder increased in volume and frequency as it slowly got closer. Soon lightning could be seen preceding the thunder. The leaves stopped moving. All was quiet as the rain approached, like an audience anticipating the start of a concert. Then began a "onefinger concerto" as a single raindrop fell upon a leaf, followed by another, then one here and another one over there. The "wood-winds" took up the melody as the breeze rustled through the trees. Soon nature's entire orchestra was playing as the rain increased to a downpour. The tops of the trees dipped and swayed like dancers responding to the frenzied tempo. There was a FLASH/BOOM as the lightening and thunder assaulted eyes and ears, then another FLASH/BOOM and yet another, much like the cannons in the 1812 Overture. The storm was directly above and continued at full volume. Finally the brightness of the lightening and the noise of the thunder softened and the heavy rain decreased. The members of the orchestra were packing up one by one until all that was left was again the single drops of rain on individual leaves. Slowly the sky lightened and the sun made a weak appearance. The birds started singing and chattering again, sounding much like an audience leaving after a concert. In the far distance a low rumble of thunder could barely be heard. Nature's orchestra had moved on east and was getting ready for its next performance. Our thunderstorm was over. Omen How easy Her limbs lie In the snare of night Dreaming The snow-white Housecat s litheness Charming The bed of rattlers In the rock pile In the garden At the edge Of Eden Prayer Circle he Prayer Circle will meet on T August 27 (usually the fourth Sunday) following Worship Service in the front of the sanctuary. 6 Katherine and Jeff Baptized in the Jordan River by Katherine Jowers ecently Jeff and I traveled to R Jordan. It s the less obvious choice for travel to the holy land, no tour buses or crowds. We rode camels, hiked Petra, camped in the Bedouin desert and went scuba diving in the red sea. One of our most memorable things, though, was the Jordan River We visited Bethany on the Jordan, where Christ was baptized. We were taken there by a driver who spoke very little English, and I asked him if we were allowed to get in the water. He said sure. I was doubtful. When we arrived he spoke with the archeologist that took us to the river, and then we set off with the archeologist down a path toward the river. The archeologist was very interesting, and spoke English pretty well. First he took us to the roman ruins built around the very spot of the baptism, and he pointed out Jericho in the distance. We finally arrived at the baptism area of the river, it had a covered wooden porch area and a small orthodox chapel nearby. Across in the Israel side there is a large pavilion with palm trees and stairs into the water. On our less traveled Jordan side, there are no stairs and no tourists in the water. On arriving at the river, we saw someone climbing up the riverbank and one man still coming up to the shore. Our archaeologist friend left us and went to the river, and spoke to the man. He then quickly turned toward us and shouted Did you want to be baptized? After a moment to absorb the question, I shouted back YES! He hustled us into the small Chapel, where they sold very plain white gowns for baptism. We stepped into a small booth, jumped into the gowns, and then walked back to the river The gentleman in the river was a minister who had just come there to baptized a friend. He agreed to stay for us. We climbed down into the water, over some large rocks, and arrived waist-deep in the Jordan. It was an overwhelming feeling, so of course I cried. But it was wonderful and exhilarating too. I was baptized first, Jeff was second. We climbed out like wet rats, smiling and crying. We couldn't thank our archaeologist friend enough for creating that amazing opportunity for us. Jeff was raised Lutheran, so it was his first dunking, and my second as a BaptistJ - Katherine Good News for Homeless Families ransformation Village a transitional living facility named by Steadfast House residents in 2011 in recognition of the transformative impact it will have on the lives of its residents and the community as a whole is T ABCCM s vision to end homelessness for women (including Veterans), children and families. It will provide homeless individuals and families with a safe and secure living space, along with the skills they need to take steps to successfully move on with stable income and in their own home. The facility will eventually replace ABCCM s Steadfast House, which has a waiting list of more than 300 women and children. Steadfast House is a 43-bed transitional living facility for homeless women and children, including 10 beds for female veterans, all of whom will move to Transformation Village when it opens. Once open, residents of Transformation Village will receive the same education and training opportunities, lifeskills classes, case management support to move to self-sustainability and permanent housing, and basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter as current residents of Steadfast House do. Transformation Village will mirror ABCCM s successful Veterans Restoration Quarters (VRQ), a 248-bed transitional living facility for homeless male veterans. The VRQ opened in Preliminary site development including tree removal, land grading and the creation of a service road has been completed. ABCCM has issued the contract to install sewer lines and all required pre-construction inspections and permits have been completed.
