1 Kenilworth Church PC(USA) Faith, Love, Action November, 2018 Advent Focus: Names Kenilworth Friends, And they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us You will bear a son, and you will name him Jesus Most of us enjoy being in a place where everybody knows our name. Our names are important to us. Some of our names go back several generations in our family. Others commemorate special occasions, good friends, a time of the year. Our names are one way we distinguish ourselves from one another. In the Reformed tradition, we believe God knows us and calls us by name. Each time we baptize an infant, child, or adult, we say the person s name and then say Child of the covenant. That is another name God has for each of us. We also know Jesus by name. The Hebrew for Jesus was Yeshua, related to the name Joshua as well. But that is not the only name we know for Jesus. He was Mary s child; son (Continued on page 2) New Roof Coming Thanks to Gift atoka Toka Wilson M Rhinehart died on February 8, Most of you will not have known her, but she attended Kenilworth Presbyterian Church until she left Asheville in Without informing anyone, she remembered Kenilworth Church in her Will, bequeathing a portion of her estate to the church for the maintenance and repair of the building. In anticipation of her gift, we took bids in October for replacing the church roof. Mrs. Rhinehart s check arrived at the end of October and we awarded the roofing contract to WNC Roofing the first week of November. The contractor plans to begin the replacement of the main building roof on December 10 and to complete the main roof before Christmas, weather permitting. Work on the LFR building and Kenilworth Center roofs will begin in January. Whether you knew Mrs. Rhinehart or not, we all owe her a debt of gratitude for her thoughtful gift. Her gift will be enough to replace the church roof. We won t know until we get the old roof off, but we may even have enough left over to complete the LFR courtyard railings or even purchase brick and cobblestones for the north walk. In other news, work is now underway on repairs to the LFR building electrical, including underground electrical service, a new electrical panel and emergency power for the food pantry. The electrical improvements are being financed with a grant from the Cannon Foundation. - Mike Cox Mark your calendar for these activities: November 18 : Lunch and Learn and Pre-Thanksgiving Feast following worship in the fellowship hall. Rev. Smith will lead discussion on gratitude. Turkey and drinks provided. Bring a side dish or dessert to share. 2 (Continued from page 1) of the carpenter Joseph; the Bread of Life; the Good Shepherd; the Way, the Truth, the Light. This Advent we will focus on names of Jesus that we find in the book of Isaiah. When Isaiah wrote his prophecy, Jerusalem was under siege and a long exile in Babylon lay ahead for the people of Israel. Isaiah promised them that one day a messiah would come and save them a Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. During December we will reflect on each of these names what they meant to our ancestors back then and what they mean for us today. Nancy Dillingham has written weekly poems for us inspired by these names. Some of the hymns and carols we will sing will add to our understanding. Thank You, Volunteers I encourage you to meditate on these names for Jesus and join us each Sunday as we prepare and watch for the coming of Jesus once again. Blessings, Edna Presbyterian Women he Presbyterian Women of T KPC will meet after worship at 12:30 on Sunday, Dec. 2nd in the parlor. Meg Elliot will be leading Lesson Four in our Bible study, and we will enjoy a bit of Christmas cheer. All women are welcome to join us. hoir has started back for the season. This year will be a C diverse year with music ranging from a Latin beat, some Southern Gospel, a little modern rock, to some swing and worshipful ballads. The choir has also started rehearsals for the Annual Christmas Cantata. We practice each Sunday before church, starting at 10:00am. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please see Chuck Lockwood. We welcome all ages and all voices. - Chuck Lockwood - Edna 2017 Cantata Choir

4 Pastor Appreciation Day Rev. Dr. Allen Smith and wife, Dr. Mary Smith with Rev. Dr. Edna Banes and husband, Warren smile for the camera of Leslie Peterson. Presentation was followed by a reception. Our KPC congregation loves its Pastors. 37 Scars! Oh What a night! A big thank you to James Graves who performed his biographical play 37 Scars on October 4. Asheville Period Project Donation and new volunteers $1,100 was raised for Loving Food Resources and there were over 75 people in attendance. With the sponsorship help of the group Asheville Prime Timers and Shawn Winebrenner all costs to produce the play were off set and all money went directly to support the incredible work of Loving Food Resources! - Katie uge donation for Asheville H Period Project and new volunteers! The Asheville Chapter of the Links, Inc held a product drive to benefit the Asheville Period Project and it was a huge success. The Links donated the items on a Friday morning just in time for a group of volunteers to make homeless period packs on Saturday. A male youth group from First Presbyterian joined force with the Project on Saturday morning putting in a few hours to help women in need. Thanks everyone for your help. - Katie Gracious Lord: Take our hands, work through them. Take our lips, speak through them. Take our minds, think through them. Take our hearts, set them on fire! 6 Scenes Around KPC Halloween "Some of our dozen or so unofficial members, who come around often, especially during the week." - Don Balloonman or Chihuly Art Bob Williams Making Time for Fun and Games e ve been experimenting with having an afternoon of W games. We re meeting at the back of the sanctuary from 1 to 4 on Tuesday afternoons. So far we ve played Dominos, Bridge and Pinochle. Three handed Pinochle turns out to be unpredictable, but often funny. We plan to meet for the remaining Tuesdays in November. Anyone who want some socializing and games is welcome to stop by and join us. Church family is not only a solemn holy commitment, but it is also a source of joy! Norma Warren

7 A Very Starry Night by Shirley Mathis his is not a fairy tale, but once upon a time in the magical T county of Madison, I experienced an eye-popping, jawdropping, breathtaking event which I had never seen before or since. It was the end of an uneventful day and I had turned out the lights on my way to bed. As I passed by the bedroom window, I happened to look up between the nearby treetops and stopped dead in my tracks at what I saw. The little patch of sky that was visible was completely filled with stars! After a while I gathered my wits about me again and carefully made my way in the dark out onto the deck. I could see more of the sky from that vantage point and the sight was even more spectacular. There was literally no space for even one more tiny star any place in the heavens! It was a clear, cloudless night with no moon and no visible outside lights. I later learned that our solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy and there are billions of other galaxies in the universe. We were passing through just a part of the Milky Way Galaxy at that time. I had always lived in metropolitan areas with bright lights and air pollution, so I had never seen such a sight. Probably others have also had a similar experience on a clear, dark night far away from any artificial light. It was impossible to distinguish the Big Dipper and the North Star or any other familiar constellations among the bazillions of stars in the heavens that night. And that was only a part of God s domain! There are also other galaxies with suns which are the center of solar systems such as our own. Were there other planets out there like our planet Earth that could sustain life? Possibly. Could there be humans? Would they look like us? Would they be as advanced as us? Might they be searching for other planets also, like us with our powerful telescopes? And what great Force, God if you will, could keep all these uncountable galaxies and solar systems from bumping into each other as they all rotate separately in the vast heavens? Looking up at that night sky, I felt like a very tiny microscopic speck on our planet. And who was I, and all the other billions of specks on this Earth, that God would be mindful of us? As I stood transfixed and gazing in wonder at just a small part of God s domain, the words of the old familiar hymn How Great Thou Art took on a new and special meaning for me. Those were mighty profound thoughts and questions on that very starry night. And it was another mountaintop experience which I shall never forget. The Congregational Care Committee, Session Members and KPC congregational members enjoyed visiting, calling or sending cards to our members and friends who were not able to join KPC activities in person or had other needs of encouraging support. Please continue letting us know of anyone to whom we may show the Love of Jesus. If you are aware of someone with a need, please contact Leslie Godbold at lesliegodbold@aol.com or call (828) A Poem to Ponder by Nancy Dillingham Messenger A single red maple leaf Settled on my car s Windshield today Dropped like a fallen star Nature s bright messenger Autumn s calling card Conveying Heaven s lesson Of life s beautiful brevity And love s longevity lease volunteer for greeters P and hospitality time. 8 What is Love? By Don Peterson I can not tell you how love will appear, For it will defy description. And though I can give you a thought or two The best that you can do Is hope that your heart will somehow know, Without the words. It may be that the pheromones find first That ancient animal attraction That makes us go giddy With the anticipation of doing our part To populate the earth. It is the spark that is ignited Whenever your hands touch. It is the elixir that makes you go weak in the knees Whenever the object of your affection Merely walks into the room. And this immediately dismisses all thoughts Of even the possibility There will ever be anyone else. Oh, you can have this piece of the puzzle Without the other, As many do. And you can invent the rest, As many do. For this kind of treasure Always has a life of its own, And if you are not careful, It will easily convince you That it's all you are searching for. Don and Leslie were married 9/29 After all, you think, It would be such a mistake To base a life-long commitment On only a friendship, And it would. But, you see, the other piece of the puzzle That you must be sure to find Is your one best friend, The one who laughs with you, The one who cries with you, The one who holds fast to you, Through all the best and worst of life. The one who always brings you comfort Without ever having to ask when you need it. The one who may not always understand you But always accepts you, And instead of trying to change you, Will forever celebrate you. Oh, you can have this piece of the puzzle Without the other, As many do. And you can invent the rest, As many do. For this kind of treasure Always has a life of its own, And if you are not careful, It will easily convince you That it's all you are searching for. After all, you think, It would be such a mistake To base a life-long commitment On only a physical attraction, And it would. So, you see, to have a truly great love You must be prepared to search all your life, Though it's true that the more fortunate May find it without such strife. But whatever the time and whatever the season You must seek both pieces with reason, For settling for one without the other Will mean you are giving up the chance To complete one of life's most beautiful pictures.
