1 1 Lutheran Church of Our Saviour Volume 18, No. 6 Pastor Katie s Corner June 2018 Ahh, June. After the baptisms done and new members taken in during the Easter season. After the church holidays of Pentecost and Holy Trinity Sundays. June, when the lectionary readings and our worship services quiet down for the summer. June, when we settle in for a nice, comfortable pace in our liturgy. June, when we rest easy with familiar, mellow stories from Jesus in the summer. Or do we? Because over the next few weeks, we ll see Jesus do some uncomfortable things. He ll break the Third Commandment. He ll talk about Satan and seemingly reject his brothers and mother. He will sleep through a hurricane at sea and then ask the disciples why they were so afraid. June won t end up being a comfortable time. Because following Jesus is never comfortable. Worshiping God is not meant to be a purely peaceful experience. While what we do on Sunday morning is familiar with many of us, encountering Christ in Word and Meal is meant to push us into unfamiliar territory: into new places within ourselves, into different relationships with our neighbors, into unexplored parts of our faith and our God. Council recently has been talking about how here at LCOS, we re very comfortable. Church is very familiar for us. We like our comfort-zone. But comfort-zones and familiarity rarely lead to newness and growth, which our council and congregation so desperately desire. As one saying goes, Jesus came to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. So, this June, let s begin with Jesus. Let s begin by encountering Christ in worship and the Word this summer, by allowing ourselves to feel uncomfortable, to be a little unsettled, to see Christ as a bit unfamiliar. Because in the world s eyes, the message that Jesus came to bring was uncomfortable, unsettling, and unfamiliar. And yet it is this unsettling, uncomfortable message and mission that will save us, our church, and the world. Your Servant, Pastor Katie

4 4 VOLUME 18 NO.6 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No ; but in him it is always Yes. 5 5 G O O D T I D I NG S V O LU M E 1 8 NO. 6 ELCA Social Statement on Women and Justice In 2019, our Churchwide Assembly will consider the ELCA s newest Social Statement, titled, Women and Justice: One in Christ. The Task Force that wrote the document is inviting ELCA members to read and evaluate the draft of their work. ELCA social statements are teaching and policy documents that provide broad frameworks to assist us in thinking about and discussing social issues in the context of faith and life. They are meant to help communities and individuals with moral formation, discernment, and thoughtful engagement with current social issues as we participate in God s work in the world. Social statements also set policy for the ELCA and guide its advocacy and work as a publicly engaged church. They result from an extensive process of participation and deliberation and are adopted by a two-thirds vote of an ELCA churchwide assembly (From Bishop Humphrey of our Virginia Synod encourages us, Women and Justice is an essential conversation in every congregation. It is important that we have as many members as possible participating in this step of the process. Participation in a hearing is part of how we develop social statements in this church. Hearings are a chance to both speak and listen. This is part of who we are as church together. LCOS will hold two conversations for reflection on the Women and Justice Draft Statement, led by Pastor Katie. One will be on Wednesday, July 16 at 1:00pm at Glory Days Restaurant on Harbourside Centre Loop. The other will be Sunday, July 22 after worship at the church. All responses to the Draft Social Statement are due by Sept. 30, To read more about this process, go to To download a copy of the Draft Social Statement on Women and Justice go to A limited number of printed copies will be available from LCOS. 6 6 V O LU M E 1 8, NO. 6 G O O D T I D I NG S Power in the Spirit Conference Roanoke College, July 12-14, 2018 Hosted at beautiful Roanoke College in Salem Virginia, Power in the Spirit is an inspirational conference for everyone who wishes to explore God s call to service through joyous worship, Bible study, keynote addresses, workshops, and fellowship. In addition, congregational leaders teachers, organists and choir directors, choir members, committee or council members, family life consultant, pastors, and others will find Power in the Spirit nurturing and challenging as they consider their mission and ministry. Every year, Power in the Spirit gathers people of all ages for a time of fellowship, learning, serving, and worshipping God together. This is a special conference that allows rostered leaders and laypeople to worship together, to learn together, to share experiences and histories together, and to form community (Elizabeth Smythe, Coordinator). Register online at vasynod.org/power-in-the-spirit. Forms are also in the narthex. Wondering About Weddings? Based on the popularity of our Funerals class series in 2016, Pastor Katie will be teaching a series about weddings for three Tuesdays this June. You do not have to be planning a wedding or married, or even ever been to a wedding to come to this class. It s for everyone! June 5th: Weddings Scriptural and Historical Background (We ll look at weddings in the Bible (Are there any other than Cana?) and learn about what weddings were like when Christianity started. June 12th: Lutheran Weddings - What makes a wedding Lutheran? (We ll look at what Lutherans believe is happening through a wedding.) June 19th: Other Considerations - Interfaith Weddings, Renewals of Vows, and Divorce (We ll consider Lutheran approaches to interfaith weddings, renewals of vows, and divorce.) Classes will take place at 1:00pm in the Food Court of the Midlothian Wegmans. Buy your lunch or just come for the class!

7 7 VOLUME 18, NO.6 Children s Church? Children s Church! This past school year s influx of young children in the nursery raises a new necessity here at LCOS: a small children s church, a time during the readings, sermon, and prayers in worship when an adult would provide a short Bible story for the children in the nursery. Would you be interested in providing this Bible story time once a month starting in the fall? Please pray and consider, and contact Pastor Katie or Julie Mugford if so. Youth Group The combined youth group from LCOS and St. Luke s UMC are currently conducting a fundraiser to meet travel expenses to the National Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas in June youth members and 2 adult chaperones plan to attend this gathering. Yellow Rent-A-Teen forms are in the narthex and may be placed in the Youth mailbox in the work room. Thank you for your support of our youth! Richmond Friends of the Homeless OUTREACH We will be transitioning to the summer menu for the months of June, July, and August. The Outreach Committee will provide the main dish, and it would be wonderful if the congregation could help provide side dishes. This change in menu provides the folks at RFOH with some variety for lunch and also helps alleviate the problem of the kitchen heating up due to hot ovens. We always serve the second Wednesday of every month. Please see the sign-up sheet on the large bulletin board for ideas. CARITAS Once again LCOS will be partnering with St. Luke s UMC to provide support for CARI- TAS on August The event will take place at St. Luke's on Fordham Road. The past few years LCOS has assisted with laundry supplies, daily lunches, overnight help, and anywhere else we could support our friends. Further information will be provided in the summer bulletins and combined July/ August newsletter.

12 12 Dear Friends, You are such a blessing to CCHASM. We thank you for your generous gift of $200. May the Lord bring you increase. Mary Anne Weeks Outreach Director Dear Pastor Katie, Kayleigh, and the congregation, Thank you for the donation of batteries! They will come in handy for sensory items, games, and musical toys at our Day Support programs! We are grateful for you! Sincerely, Leah Development Coordinator Lutheran Family Services of Virginia THANKS THIS MONTH GO TO... Movement Mortgage & Peyton Roinnel, who graciously donated office space for our Council Retreat on May 5... Jim Burnish, for organizing that wonderful property clean-up day on May George & Clarice Reynolds, who donated craft supplies to our preschool... Melody Yates, who donated sewing machines to our quilters... Carmen Strohecker & the five LCOS members who made casseroles for preschool teacher Nancy Uhl, who is recovering from invasive cancer surgery... Walt Strohecker, Luz Pulskamp, Valerie Thorp Gray, Dan Silverman, & Kaarina Modiri, who lent their foreign languages to our Acts reading on Pentecost. Richmond Friends of the Homeless The Outreach Ministry served 84 Richmond Friends of the Homeless on May 9, Those who prepared casseroles were: Margie Aunins, Jane Avery, Diane Beall, Cheryl Berdell, Linda Dugent, Kayleigh Dumont, Jacquie Evans, Sandy French, Clare Haack, Barbara Harlowe, Shirley Hawthorne, Cindy Huston, Sharon Johnson, Gail Kimpfler, Kaarina Modiri, Frances Peterson, Luz Pulskamp, Jules Roinnel, Angie Seay, Rose Talley, Ester Teal, & Karen Watkins. Those who helped serve were: Margie Aunins, Jane Avery, Jacquie Evans, Shirley Hawthorne, Gail Kimpfler, Jules Roinnel, & Pastor Katie. Thank you to all who prepare casseroles and serve each month. We always serve RFOH the second Wednesday of each month and welcome new helpers all the time! We could not provide this ministry without your support. We had a great turnout for our Property Work Day on May 12. Besides myself, Bryan & Jackie Casey, Walt & Carmen Strohecker, Marcia Swanson, Alan Swanson, Margie Aunens, Craig Nelson, Michael Scheivert, Jacquie Evans, and Ellen Stefaniak came out to help. That s right: there were 12 of us! It keeps getting bigger with better fellowship. We cut the bush growing around the middle lamp post in the parking lot, on the far side from the church building. We also picked up limbs, and those we couldn t haul away were stacked for future removal, as well as cleaned and trimmed the Memorial Garden; and, generally, cleaned up. We ll schedule the next Work Day in mid to late September, when the weather begins to cool. Thank you all that come out and make it worthwhile to facilitate these work days. God s Grace to us all, Jim Burnish Still remembering Easter... We give thanks to Craig Nelson, who gave Easter lilies in the memory of his wife, Ann Nelson, but whose donation did not get in the Easter bulletin by oversight. Thank you, Craig.
