1 The Messenger September 14, 2016 Volume XXXV, No. 19 Serving Our Community and Neighbors By Mary Ellen Darby As a community shaped by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, we are called to worship God, share the Good News, foster spiritual growth and meet the needs of hurting people. Since the beginning of August our church family has been faithfully serving our community and neighbors. Faces of First Baptist Church have been preparing and serving meals to others. Take a look at the outreach events and the number served: Fall Program Kick-Off (8/10) served Carson-Newman Football Team (8/14) served Bereavement - 14 served International Student Lunch (8/19) - 80 served WOW on Wednesdays - 20 served per week Hotdog Cookout for CNU Students (8/23) - 90 served Baptist Collegiate Ministry Welcome Back Night (8/24) - 90 served Carson-Newman Welcome Back Picnic (8/28) - 90 students served Collecting this information and sharing it with our church is not meant to give ourselves a big pat on the back. Rather, it is to open our eyes to where people are serving and be an encouragement to future serving opportunities. These service opportunities represent a small area of our giving of time sacrifice. Each day members minister in our community through various opportunities. Thank you for answering God's call to service in your life. May we continue to be the face of Christ and face of First Baptist Church to our neighbors. Thanks be to God.
2 Tiffany Triplett Henkel will be bringing our message on September 18. Tiffany has served as Pastor of Metro Baptist Church in New York City for the past 11 years. She is also the Executive Director of Metro s community serving not-forprofit organization, Rauschenbusch Metro Ministries. Prior to her ministry in New York City, Tiffany served on staff at Immanuel Baptist Church in Nashville and was an Adjunct Professor of Religion at Belmont University. Tiffany lives in the Hell s Kitchen neighborhood of NYC with her husband, Dan, and children, Hudson and Adelaide. Dave McNeely will be preaching on September 25. Dave and his wife, Mandy, have been members of FBC since 2005 and have been actively involved with many congregational ministries. Originally from Burlington, Kentucky, Dave has studied at Carson-Newman, Iliff School of Theology, and Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, where he once unfortunately preached with his pants zipper open. That was only slightly more embarrassing than the time he showed up one hour late for a worship service in Virginia because of Daylight Savings Time. He was the Pastor. Despite these missteps, Dave has long understood and embraced his calling to education in service of the Church. Dave currently wears a few hats at Carson-Newman, but his favorite is his role as Coordinator for the Faith & Justice Scholars Program. At home, Dave enjoys spending time with his two boys, Christopher and Noah, but still has no idea what is going on with Pokémon. Dave thoroughly enjoys teaching, reading, and writing and hopes to one day stumble upon a lost island in the Pacific Ocean. While writing this bio, Dave was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack. Deacon Nominations Now is the time for nominating deacons. Hopefully, you ve begun to seek capable, willing candidates. Nomination forms are available in the church office. The following people are currently serving and should not be nominated: Carolyn Blevins, David Blevins, Frank Brown, John Burton, Fleda Collins, Kathy Dampier, Nicki Fogg, Diane Grantham, Pam Hester, Frank Pinkerton, Ann Porter, Jennifer Sanford, Heidi Thomas, David Aldredge, Jean Love, John McGraw, Rocky Melton, Don Mitchell, Karen Smith, Kristi Snyder, Irene Weiler, and Ron Weiler. Deacons rotating off this year who may be nominated: Sylvia Blanc, Ronda Blevins, Cathy Brown, Jan Campbell, Bruce Davenport, Tina Haun, Edna Langley, Mandy McNeely, Thomas Milligan, Ken Morton, Linda Rosser, Betty Watkins, and Jim Wilson. 3 Children s Ministry Matters Becky Stout, Minister to Children and Families SPACE TRANSFORMATION for FAITH FORMATION Join us for our Togetherness Service on Sunday, October 2, as we celebrate the completion of our preschool renovation. Wednesdays Of Wonder Update Wednesdays of Wonder is off to a great start! Thank you for the support this MAT has felt by your prayers and offers of assistance. We have had children each week enjoying a snack, some outdoor recreation and tutoring/homework help. It has been an intentional small beginning so that we can work through logistics, transportation, and mostly make sure that we have adequate volunteers. The goal of this MAT is to provide a "bridge" (between after school and 5:00) to mostly community children so that they may become involved in our Wednesday activities of choir and missions. Relationships are being made and the love of Christ is being shared! It is our hope that we may grow and open this in between time to more children. In order to do this, we are praying for more tutors and volunteers, and someone to drive the church bus. Many have asked how they can help: provide packages of string cheese, goldfish, and pretzels; tutor from 4:10-4:55; and most of all, pray that God will send the children who need to feel the love of Christ through the hands and feet of His church body. Pam Hester Zaxby s Fundraisers for Children s Day Out, 5-8 p.m. September 27, October 25, November 29, December 20 Pastor Search Committee Seeking Resumes The Pastor Search Committee has distributed the pastor opening announcement through several Baptist channels, and we are continuing to receive resumes. Due to the confidential nature of the process, we wanted to remind everyone if you have a candidate you think we should consider, please fill out a recommendation form. As we are unable to discuss candidates, do not assume anyone has been recommended. The form is located on the church website, and located in the church office. Thank you for continuing to pray for the committee during this process.
