3 Betty Jo Kaylor December 8, March 26, 2018 Betty Jo Russell Kaylor, age 82, gave up her fight and passed away on Monday, March 26, She was the daughter of the late Mildred King Russell and William Harry Russell. Among those left to mourn her are her husband of over sixty years, Norman R. Kaylor, her daughter Beth, Joyce Elizabeth Kaylor, her son Ray, Norman Ray Kaylor, Jr. and his wife M.L. Bagwell of Robbinsville, North Carolina. She is also survived by her sister Joyce Ann Russell Whitmer and her husband Richard of Nashville, Tennessee, her brother-in-law Glenn Kaylor of Nashville, Tennessee, her sister-in-law Bette Kaylor Widener and her husband Thomas E. Widener of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, former students, many friends and family and her beloved Yorkie, Oliver. Jo was born in Nashville, Tennessee on December 8, 1935, attended Fehr Elementary School and graduated from North Nashville High School. Early on at North High, inspired by her teachers she decided to become a high school history and English teacher and earned her B.S. degree at Middle Tennessee State College. But instead of high school English and history her first teaching appointment was fourth grade at Jones School in her old neighborhood. She had found her calling; she loved teaching elementary school children and continued in that profession for over thirty years. Jo s teaching career went from Jones School to Kimberley School in Atlanta to Forest Hills and Wheeless Road schools in Augusta, Georgia to William H. Blount Elementary School in Wilmington, North Carolina including one year at UNCW and along the way she completed graduate study at Georgia State University and earned her master s in elementary education degree at Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi. Jo was an avid reader and was surrounded by books. She loved the classics, especially Shakespeare, but looked forward to new books from her favorite mystery writers. She was also a puzzle addict, looking forward each morning to her coffee and the newspaper puzzles. She was proud of her charity work, especially becoming a Paul Harris Fellow with her support of International Rotary. Jo had many interests beyond her work and her books. She loved golf and was an Echo Farms Golf Club member for over 25 years where she was a member of the Ladies Golf Association. She and Norm played golf courses all around the state and in charity tournaments. She was especially proud of her hole-in-one. She loved to travel, visiting many cities and parks around the country and she loved ocean cruises. But she also loved being at home with her family, her Yorkie Oliver, her flowers and her yard. She enjoyed being with her friends, especially the lunch bunch, the former teachers and staff at Blount School and the group, longtime friends from Wrightsville Beach United Methodist Church and, of course, her golfing friends at Echo Farms. Jo was a gentle and loving mother, wife and friend whose quiet demeanor made her an excellent teacher. She was a loving mother to Ray and Beth and the perfect mate for Norm. She passed her love for books and reading to Beth and her love for art and her artistic ability to Ray. She and Norm were inseparable and had a deep love and respect for one another and for their family, friends and colleagues.

4 The family is very grateful for the love and support of family and friends and would like to express special thanks to Dr. Kenneth Kotz at the Zimmer Center, the nurses and doctors at NHRMC and the wonderful people at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. A special memorial service will be held to honor Jo is being planned for mid April at Wrightsville United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, she can be honored with support to the Norman R and Betty Jo R Kaylor Scholarship Fund at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington at TMCFunding.com or the charity of your choice. Her generosity, her love and caring of others and her love of learning and the lessons she taught will be remembered forever. 5 Time to dig deep and make some calls. I sent some s out this week to Rotarians that I haven t heard from on money they usually bring in. I have heard back from some. Thanks Patrick Roadside Cleanup Accomplished THANK YOU Paul Hibbert, David Giradot, Roger Cook, Rick Mitchell and JD Swart for doing the roadside cleanup last Saturday. Bible Humor Don't let your worries get the best of you; Remember, Moses started out as a basket case. Some people are kind, polite, and thoughtful Until you try to sit in their pews. Many folks want to serve God, But only as advisers. It is easier to preach ten sermons Than it is to live one. The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, But mosquitoes come close. When you get to your wit's end, You'll find God lives there. People are funny; they want the Front of the bus, Middle of the road, And back of the church.

6 Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on the front door forever. Quit griping about your church; If it was perfect, you couldn't belong. If a church wants a better pastor, It only needs to pray for the one it has. We're called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges. God Himself doesn't propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you? Some minds are like concrete Thoroughly mixed up and permanently set. Peace starts with a smile. I don't know why some people change churches; What difference does it make which one you stay home from? Be ye fishers of men. You catch 'em - He'll clean 'em. Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous. Don't put a question mark where God put a period. Don' t wait for 6 strong men to take you to church. Forbidden fruits create many jams. God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. God grades on the cross, not the curve. God loves everyone, But probably prefers 'fruits of the spirit' over 'religious nuts!' God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage. He who angers you, controls you! If God is your Co-pilot, swap seats! Prayer:

7 Don't give God instructions, just report for duty! The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us. The Will of God never takes you to where the Grace of God will not protect you. We don't change the message. The message changes us. You can tell how big a person is By what it takes to discourage him/her. The best mathematical equation I have ever seen: 1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given. There is no greater treasure than a good friend! March Madness Happy 113th Birthday Rotary! Exactly 113 years ago in Chicago, four business men met together and decided to form a Club. That Club was subsequently called Rotary. From that humble start, Rotary has grown into the worldwide organization that it is, and the Rotary Foundation, which has a 100% rating on Charity navigator, doing fantastic things throughout the world is the arm that helps all of us do good things locally and around the world. This year's conference will be held at the newly remodeled Hilton Riverside Hotel in downtown Wilmington, NC. We have some exciting things planned for you.

9 Special prices for your non-rotarian guests! Registration opens on Friday, April 27th at 8:00 am. We will be featuring our club's showcase programs in the morning followed by a short business meeting. Lunch will feature the Rotary International President's Representative. Then you will have free time to shop or sightsee. You can sign up for one of the historic walking tours that will be available. At 6:00 pm join Governor RB Richey on the Battleship North Carolina for dinner and dancing. Meet fellow Rotarians in the Hospitality Suite when you return to the hotel. On Saturday, more club showcases, and a youth program. Lunch will be hosted by the Wilmington West Club at the world's largest Rotary Wheel. We ask that you bring non-perishable food that will be collected at the Wheel and be distributed to Nourish NC. Our service project will follow the lunch at the Nouish NC Warehouse and we hope you participate. There will be more time for shopping and sightseeing. The Wilmington Cape Fear Club will host dinner at the Fort Fisher Aquarium followed by entertainment by "Haydini".
