1 The Church June/July 2016 at Horseshoe Bay 600 HI RIDGE, PO BOX 8295, HORSESHOE BAY, TEXAS , FAX , CHURCH-HSB.ORG YouthCUE- UNIQUE CONCERT OPPORTUNITY Tuesday, July a.m. The Church at Horseshoe Bay has the unique privilege of welcoming an outstanding choir of young people in a free concert on Tuesday morning, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. in the church's Sanctuary. The 2016 YouthCUE National Honor Choir will perform an hour long concert of classical to contemporary sacred music. This Honor Choir is comprised of 55 high school students from across the United States. The National Honor Choir singers have been selected based upon their musical talent, leadership in their local church, participation in their local community, and personal history of service in church and school. The National Honor Choir will be on a singing tour through central Texas when they stop in Horseshoe Bay on the way to an evening concert at Baylor University's annual Alleluia Church Music Conference. The National Honor Choir is the premiere concert choir of the YouthCUE interdenominational ministry which undergirds the development of youth choirs throughout the nation. YouthCUE, headquartered in San Antonio under the direction of founder and president, Randy Edwards, has organized youth choir festivals in every major city in Texas and across the country including San Diego, Tallahassee, Charlotte, Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Shreveport, Ft. Lauderdale, Richmond, Atlanta, Denver, and Birmingham. Also, YouthCUE Festivals have taken place in Montreal and Toronto, Canada. Over the past 25 years, YouthCUE has provided innovative programming and resources to promote the development of student choirs in churches and schools across the country. Established in 1990 by Randy Edwards, YouthCUE has grown in size and influence with over 30,000 students in network. Since its inception, YouthCUE has impacted the lives of approximately 250,000 students. The Church at Horseshoe Bay has supported this ministry for a number of years through its Benevolence Budget. The Purpose of YouthCUE is to teach and instill Scripture into the hearts and minds of youth through the power of choral music. The Mission is to equip student choir directors with tools and resources to develop healthy, vibrant student choirs in churches, schools and communities. The Vision is for every student in North America to have the opportunity to participate in a vibrant student choir program. Randy Edwards directs the National Honor Choir and Dr. Daniel Zamora is the piano accompanist. We welcome Daniel back to Horseshoe Bay and look forward to an outstanding presentation of superb choral music from the most talented high school students.

2 Worship + 2 Volunteer Opportunity With its first beginnings in 2008, Lake Shores Church began filling a need in the MFISD elementary schools by supplying school supplies. This small beginning has evolved into a successful event called Back to School Blast. The event is one of our Philanthropic Partners In 2015 they took the event into the community and distributed 1200 backpacks and 800 pairs of brand new shoes and socks as well! At this point 10 churches and 20 health/ community organizations have participated. The goals for 2016 are: #1 To share the Gospel story! One church has already committed to putting a Bible in every backpack! #2 Launch the Adopt A Backpack initiative: For 30, an individual can adopt a backpack. #3 Provide supplies to High School students. #4 Garner more support from the area Faith community. #5 Involve a Spanish-speaking church. The backpack goal for this year is 1500 backpacks. They are distributed Saturday, Aug. 6 10:00 am 1:00 pm Volunteers are needed the day of the event, Saturday, Aug 6, 10:00 am 1:00 p.m. Aug. 1 and 2 for staging the supplies. 3 The Church at Horseshoe Bay men honor the women of both HSB churches The Church at Horseshoe Bay s Men of Faith organization hosted a Fish Fry in honor of two women s church groups on Wednesday, May 11, Special invitations went out to the members of the protestant Women of the Word (WOW) and the catholic Women Working in Communion and Spirit (WWICS). These two women s groups along with their spouses enjoyed a fabulous dinner of fresh deep fried fish, corn on the cob, coleslaw and hush puppies with all the trimmings included. Dessert was delicious peach cobbler. Iced tea and water were also available. The thirteen tables of eight places each were brightly decorated with patriotic colors. The seating plan had catholic guests mixed evenly with protestant members. After the 100 guests finished dinner, spokespersons from each church presented interesting facts about activities of their respective churches. Scott Matthews led off by telling how the Men of Faith at The Church at Horseshoe Bay was started several years ago and was actually encouraged by WOW members to do it. He told the audience that the MOF hosted Fellowship Breakfasts in the spring and fall along with other activities. Additionally, twice a year the MOF honor selected organizations from the two churches such as the Boards of Trustees, the choirs, the Christian Education Teachers and now the women s groups. Scott praised the WOW ladies for the tremendous work that they do for the church. Ann Higdon, Chairman of WOW, described their history while giving credit to the 13 women who were the charter members. She stated that to date the women have held 15 spring luncheons in the Fellowship Hall and 9 yearly retreats at Camp Buckner. Ann briefly listed some of the projects that WOW supports including the Sunshine House, decorating the church annually for Advent, hosting Christmas lunch for the Church staff, conducting special events like Pete Christy s farewell banquet and Johnny s 10th anniversary at the CHB. The WOW Committee has grown from the original 13 to the current 40 members. She said the mission of WOW in a few words is to glorify God by being the hands and feet of Christ in or time and place Father Ruben, Pastor, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, then thanked the MOF for the wonderful supper and was encouraged that the two churches meet and visit on occasions like the Fish Fry. He talked about how the newly constructed Family Life Center has ignited the women in his parish into action. He said his church badly needed a place to gather and now they have it and things are happening. Pat Schoch, Chairman of St. Paul s women s organization named WWICCS, spoke of the dynamics that have taken place and are continuing. She said the fire starter was Claudia Haydon along with a guest speaker, Sally Rob who encouraged the women to grow and support the church. Pat said the dynamic women who serve God are expanding the core activities of the church. Today all 230 catholic women are serving in some capacity. She mentioned a monthly newsletter is now being published, in March 2005 a huge rummage sale which overfilled the Family Life Center with items for sale and involved the entire community brought in 20,000 (another is planned for this coming September), a new Parish cook book has been published using favorite recipes from the women of the church and over 600 copies have been sold already. She mentioned the Mardi Gras and community dance that was held last February. The proceeds from all these events are helping to pay off the loan of the Family Life Center. Pat listed their Book Club, food and transportation for the needy, and many other unifying events that serve the Lord and build up the church body. The entire evening was totally enjoyable and the guests enjoyed the food and speeches. It was an uplifting occasion for members of both churches and a genuine outpouring of mutual admiration was evident. 4 MORE CASUAL SUMMER SUNDAYS Beginning on Sunday, May 29 and continuing through Labor Day weekend, you ll notice the pastors will not be wearing robes in Sunday morning worship. How come? In order to help summer worship guests feel a bit more comfortable and welcoming with us in worship including any who might be visiting our church from the Resort who might not be prepared to dress more than casual. To that end, you are invited if you wish - to be a bit more summer casual in your dress as well. WEAR YOUR NAMETAG Have you noticed the many new members who are now a part of the church? An important way for all of us to get to know one another is by wearing our name tags! OUTREACH Please contact the church office at if you have a new neighbor who is not a member of The Church at Horseshoe Bay. We would like to welcome everyone in the area to our church and community. Margie & Kirk Smith Lou Fox If you know of someone moving to Horseshoe Bay, please call the church office with a name and address and we will welcome them to the community with a small gift. Martha & James Stuard Cathy & Ken Burgess New Church Members Welcome Reception Ronda Rodman, Board of Trustee member with responsibilities, which include membership activities, and her husband, Dale, hosted a delightful Sunday afternoon party for recent newcomers who have joined The Church at Horseshoe Bay at their beautiful spacious home in Horseshoe Bay West. This gathering offered the opportunity for church trustees and new members to know each other better. Upon arrival, Dale was helping drivers get their vehicles safely parked and Ronda was at the front door welcoming one and all. Inside on the dining room table were plates and bowls laden with delicious entrees from strawberries to quiche to dips and much, much more. Furthermore, in the kitchen soft drinks, lemonade, ice water and wine were available. For several hours everyone had a wonderful time snacking and visiting with each other and enjoying the spectacular views of the Ram Rock golf course, swimming pool and the vast vistas found on the rugged terrain of Horseshoe Bay West. The trustees thank Ronda and Dale for this memorable afternoon and offer a hearty and sincere welcome to our newest church members. L-r. Bobbie Walker, Junell Van Horn, Kay Tyler & Frank Van Horn

5 SUMMER MUSIC SPECIALS Once again we will have visiting musicians joining us in worship this summer! Each guest will perform at least twice in each service. Some of our guest musicians have played in our church before as members of a chamber ensemble accompanying the choir. This summer they are returning as soloist. July 3 will be the last Sunday for the Sanctuary choir to sing before their summer break. They will sing some wonderful patriotic music for this special service. July 10 - Jesse Randle, a member of this congregation, will be playing saxophone for our enjoyment in praise. He has one of the best mellow sounds that I have heard. Jesse is a retired Texas high school band director. If you ask him about being retired, he will laugh and tell you he is busier now than before he retired. He will also tell you it is from playing his saxophones in 3-5 different groups that keep him going these days. July 17 the staff from Camp Peniel will be here helping lead in worship. This is at the end of their camping season as many of them are camped out but they always seem to energize themselves for our services. They bring a new, joyfilled love of Jesus, to us each time they join us for worship and praise. July 19, TUESDAY!, we will have the YouthCUE choir here for a morning concert. This is a great opportunity for us to enjoy hearing this group perform. Dr. Daniel Zamora is part of this group!! You will be hearing more about this concert. July 24 will be the second most requested return of U PICK THE HYMNS. You will have the opportunity to select the hymns, that day, while in the service, of what you want to sing. I love this service!! It helps me know what you like in the hymnal. Last year there was a lot of difference in the hymns picked in first services as to what was picked in second service. So start making your list of your favorite you want to sing! July 31- David Langford, a familiar face in our church, will be here to share his wonderful low brass instrumental playing. I could say he will play his trombone but that is not the only low brass he plays so we will have to wait and hear what he decides to play. David is in his second year of retirement from teaching band at Marble Falls High School. He is also busy playing in several groups in the area. August 7- Keenan Fletcher, violinist from Llano will be here again. She has played a number of time in this church and everyone seems to always enjoy listening. A graduate of UT, she has played all over this nation with some top orchestras and for some of the best conductors in the country. After returning to Texas, she began to learn to play fiddle. This is the same instrument, just a different style of playing. She is now working on earning her stripes playing jazz. A very talented musician, she now teaches from her studio in Llano called The Agape Haus. August 14- Becky Knox DeWitt, (daughter of Bill and Donna Knox) will return for us to enjoy her wonderful voice. Becky holds a degree from UT, then a Masters from Colorado State, all in opera performance. She chased her dream of performing in New York and in Charleston and later began a teaching career in Charleston along with performing. She moved back to Austin and teaches elementary music in the Round Rock ISD and still performs in the Austin area. You are sure to hear a strong but tender soprano voice as you listen to her sing. August 21- Saints Alive is a new group for many of you to hear. They are a men s ensemble of 6-8, from local area churches, who get together to sing God s praises. They sing a variety of styles of music and I am sure you will find them very enjoyable. August 28- Andra Rodden, a harpist, will join with our own Jennie Lynn to bless us with some wonderful music. Andra is from the area, Kingsland, and some of you may have heard her play before. This promises to be a great day of musical praise. September 11 the choirs will be returning to help in worship services. As you can see, there is a lot of talent that is coming to help lead in music and praise at worship all summer long. I hope to see you all in church enjoying these musicians. Garry Kesler, Music Minister Church members playing string instruments on June 19.

6 The last several months have been fast paced here at the church, and you may have noticed some new faces on Sunday morning or at the church during the week. 7 Growth Opportunity Most of you are aware of discussions at The Church at Horseshoe Bay to adjust our church service times. Not all of us are clear about why this change is sought. The best explanation is that so we may better utilize our current facilities to serve more people. Do we need to serve an increasing number of congregants? I think so. In the past few years we may not have seen solid signs of church growth, but I suspect that is not what our future holds. The Horseshoe Bay area not that I am limiting our membership potential to just Horseshoe Bay is forecast to grow at least 2.1% over the next five years. If our church were to participate in that expansion, we would experience an 11% increase in attendance and, mind you, this is only the organic growth. Consider the efforts many are making toward active outreach to new members, or the consistent public relations we are conducting, or the interest shown in our Christian education programs and the 2.1% number could easily go much higher. Note also the growth in our area of medical facilities just in the last two years which usually signals robust area growth. Is our church at capacity now? Many think so, and those who don t, see us on approach to that point. Let me give you some data to help understand our ability to seat our church goers. In our sanctuary we have available 583 linear feet of seating in the pews. The number of folks that can be seated will depend upon how much space to allow for each, keeping in mind we come in different sizes. Using 22 of pew per person suggests we could theoretically seat 318, but we cannot. Serving as a head usher, one must count attendance at each service, so I am familiar with the historical census in the sanctuary and can tell you that when 291 are seated (24 of pew per person) it is nearly impossible to find room for more. Most church planners suggest that when a church s sanctuary is seating 85% of its capacity, you are full. We currently experience, after the winter, a running average of 243 attendees at our 11:00 am service which is 84% of capacity. We are there! (The 8:30 service averages 102, or 35% of capacity.) At the present time, our church offers members two time choices for Worship Services. Additionally, we offer four different Christian Education (CE) classes, but all are set at 9:45 am which limits selection and narrows scope. By expanding our structure, offering more choices, and/or changing our style, we could attract new people and grow our numbers in our pursuit of the church s mission. The most user-friendly, some feel efficient, change would be to offer a mid-morning Worship Service at 9:30 concurrent with Christian Education classes as well as the traditional 11:00 am service. That could allow us to offer as many as 10 CE classes to grow not only our participation numbers, which have been steadily increasing, but help create informed and enthusiastic disciples of Christ. The main purpose for the planning function is to anticipate future events and potential problems, plan reasonable solutions so as to minimize disruption, avoid hasty (bad) decisions, and save money. It is also to assure that we are continuing toward our stated goal of existing to be the arms of Christ by sharing the Gospel in our community and the wider world with love and compassion. As the current chairperson of The Church at Horseshoe Bay Long-Range Planning committee, I can assure you that planning for future growth of our church and its facilities is at the forefront of my activity as we put together a comprehensive plan to take us into the future for at least a decade or more. All solutions to expand our facility will cost money, in some cases a lot. So, my inclination is to exhaust the alternatives for handling growth that cost the least, or not at all. Moving our 8:30 am service to 9:30 is a freebie. Will moving to 9:30 change things and relieve the overload on the 11:00 service and increase attendance of the earlier service? I honestly don t know, but I think so. Last year our board did a considerable amount of research nationwide on service times that strongly indicated later services had higher attendance. Also, they found that many years ago there were many more 8:30 services around the country than can be found today they seem to be going out of style and I am told it is very difficult to find a church with an 8:30 service. Personally, having a 9:30 and 11:00 service, would let me enjoy a common coffee fellowship including people from both services instead of two separate ones. I feel that would strengthen our membership connections and let us meet folks we might not have met. I ask what have we to lose? Nicely, it doesn t cost anything. Why not try it?
