1 This Week at Wilshire Tapestry Weekly newsletter of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas Building a community of faith shaped by the Spirit of Jesus Christ Volume 60 No. 50 u December 9, 2012 CBF workers welcome the strangers among them OTTAWA Angelic Jeanty remembers the sounds of a helicopter circling her house and the image of immigration officials arriving at her door. She gathered her three children and fled. Although she and her husband, David, had lived in the United States for 14 years, they were being forced to flee, again. The couple first arrived in the United States in 1992 as political refugees from their homeland of Haiti. They had made several stops in neighboring countries before arriving in the United States as refugee claimants. David, a youth pastor, and Angelic, a nurse, began making a home for themselves in the United States while their status in the country hung in the balance. Two years after arriving, officials told them they could not be classified as refugees because they had overstayed their visas while waiting for their claim to be heard. Then, when amnesty was offered to several groups, they were allowed to stay. The events of Sept. 11, 2001, affected immigration laws, and once again the couple s status was in jeopardy. In 2008, the Jeantys received a call from immigracontinued on page 6 Advent at Wilshire Today Dallas Marathon aid station 8:30 a.m. Worship 9:30 a.m. Fifth grade open house 9:40 a.m. Sunday School 9:45 a.m. Coffee and conversation with the pastor Pastor s Study 11:00 a.m. Worship 12:00 p.m. Missions Committee Room 1205-L 6:30 p.m. Around the World It s Christmas Sanctuary Monday, Dec :00 a.m. Domino group Room 1205-G Alzheimer s support group Room 1100-B 7:30 p.m. Dallas Civic Wind Ensemb. 2 Elf on Shelf Do you have an Elf on the Shelf? Cho Cho the magical elf has come to the Wright home this year. If you have no idea what I m talking about, the Elf on the Shelf is a little plush elf with a mischievous grin. After giving him or her a name, children are encouraged to tell their elves what they want Santa to bring them for Christmas. Each night while you are sleeping, your elf flies to the North Pole and tells Santa if you have been good or bad and then returns to a different location in your home in the morning. Each morning, Cayton s feet hit the floor and she cannot wait to go find Cho Cho the elf. Our favorite location so far was relaxing in a bowl of mini-marshmallows. He was taking an elf bath. I ll chalk that one up to my husband s creativity. Because Cayton is nearly 5 years old, she thinks waiting is excruciating, when really it s all fun and games. As we get older we know waiting can Another Voice become much more serious an issue and excruciating in very real and tangible ways. Waiting looks passive but can be exhausting. I know friends and family who are waiting on employment or waiting for treatments to work or waiting on relationships to become healthier. Psalm 130 says, I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning. Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation, of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. On this second Sunday of Advent we light the candle of peace. This candle is sometimes called the candle of preparation. It s a reminder that we are getting ready for the arrival of Christ. For all who wait, may you find peace in being still and may the light of Christ be with you. 6 CBF offering touches refugees in Canada Continued from page 1 tion telling them they must leave the country immediately. When David asked what he could do, he was told that his file would be sent to a judge and he should wait for the decision. So he waited. And then, unexpectedly, the officials arrived at his door. Because they knew it was still unsafe for them to return to Haiti, the Jeantys started all over again in Canada, losing everything they had but each other. Cooperative Baptist Fellowship field personnel Kim and Marc Wyatt have heard numerous stories like the Jeantys. After Sept. 11, the United States began turning away refugees, and Canada began allowing refugees to enter the country. The Wyatts ministry is focused on being the presence of Christ among refugees and encouraging churches to do the same. We see it in the Bible, Kim added. We see where we are told to love the alien. To love those who are indeed strangers. We re asked to invite them in and to treat them like brothers and sisters. When the Jeantys first crossed the border into Canada, they learned about Matthew House, an organization that provides refuge to newcomers. Matthew House has become a movement in Canada, bettering the lives of refugees and immigrants by providing a safe space to live, u Each year it takes $4.8 million to keep existing CBF missions personnel on the field. u Gifts to the Global Missions Offering are an essential supplement to the regular missions budget underwritten by year-round contributions from churches like Wilshire. u Through the Ministry Fund, Wilshire gives specific support to the overall work of CBF and to the Global Missions Offering, but additional designated Global Missions Offering gifts from members expand our reach. u CBF would like to grow the number of missions personnel serving around the world, but that will be possible only with growth in financial support. 6 Marc and Kim Wyatt are CBF field personnel working with refugees in Canada. helping them find jobs and assisting with immigration paperwork. The ministry follows the admonition of Matthew 25 to welcome the stranger as it helps people start over. The first Matthew House started in Toronto to provide refugees an alternative to the government shelters that dealt with chronic homelessness. Now there are five Matthew Houses with additional locations in Fort Eerie, Windsor, Ottawa and Montreal. Matthew House has been crucial for people like Andrea from West Africa. Like the Jeantys, Andrea came to Canada as a refugee claimant. She left her homeland after experiencing severe abuse by her family and receiving multiple death threats from her in-laws. It s like a family house, Andrea said after her first week, grateful for the meals and clothes provided by volunteers. People here are very warm. Starting over in a new country is a long process. While Matthew House is often the first stop, eventually, newcomers need help getting established in a place of their own. The Wyatts began the Furniture Bank of Ottawa Just the facts: CBF Global Missions Offering u All CBF missionaries benefit from the Global Missions Offering. Currently, 56 percent of missions personnel are completely supported by CBF. About 27 percent of our missionary force use their professional vocational income to support themselves in missions. The remaining 17 percent have their primary funding through church and individual support. u All CBF missionaries receive services that are provided by CBF funds for publicity of their work, travel grants to team meetings, computer support, college scholarship support for their children, peer group support, fund-raising assistance, financial services for tax-exempt donations, counseling services, medical insurance and access to retirement services. to complement the work of Matthew House by collecting donated furniture and giving it to newcomers who are setting up apartments in Canada for the first time. The Furniture Bank provides an important way for churches to participate in welcoming newcomers. It s also a way for the refugee to fulfill the Canadian government s service requirement for those seeking refuge. Matthew House residents volunteer at the Furniture Bank, getting a glimpse into the future as they imagine setting up their own houses one day. The movement started with one church and grew. Now, this ministry serves 10 to 20 families a week, Marc said. It s now upward of 7,000 to 8,000 people that have been served because one church had a need they knew they couldn t meet by themselves. In their work welcoming newcomers, Kim and Marc have recognized that meeting material needs alone is insufficient. Refugees and immigrants also come with spiritual needs. This fuels Kim s work as a volunteer chaplain at a local adult high school. With a background in education, she felt the opportunity to work at the school was a perfect fit. Her role as chaplain allows her to minister among students who are dealing with difficult issues. Often these conversations turn personal and deal with family, being alone, being homesick or wanting to talk about spiritual things, Kim said. I have opportunities to share and often to pray with people who are from different religious backgrounds or have no faith at all. The Wyatts dream could not be a reality without the support from the CBF Global Missions Offering. When you give to the CBF Offering for Global Missions, you re making it possible for ministries to open doors to the lives of those with broken hearts and lives, Marc said. You re making it possible for people to find the Lord and to find hope in places you may never see or go.

7 I Am Wilshire Jim Hancock Jim Hancock, a retired Baptist minister who joined Wilshire in August, doesn t mind the 40-mile drive to church. I live between McKinney and Denton, and it s worth every mile and every minute to be a part of Wilshire, he said. Becoming a member of Wilshire is one of the most enjoyable experiences I ve had since moving to the area. I joined because I like the association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and Texas Baptists, and I love the more formal way we worship. Not only that, but I heard George speak at the CBF organizational meeting, so I knew who he was. And both Bruce McIver and former pastor Huber Drumwright were close friends of mine. The people are so warm and friendly, and I immediately felt at home, Jim added. He s a member of Charlie s Angels Class but teaches in other classes most Sundays. A native of Lubbock, he played football and basketball and participated in debate at Lubbock High School. I also was active in Future Farmers of America, he said. I raised and showed Hereford cattle, and I won prizes in annual shows. During the school year and in the summers, Jim fed livestock, harvested alfalfa and drove a tractor on the family farm, which was about 90 miles from Lubbock. He grew up in the First Baptist Church of Lubbock, and as a teenager I began to have a sense of call to the gospel ministry, he said. That was a change of direction, as I had planned to join my father in the farming and ranching business. So instead of going to Texas Tech like I d planned, I went to Baylor to prepare for the ministry. While Jim was in high school, he became close friends with Bruce McIver, who then was the Baptist Student Union director at Texas Tech University. He took me under his wing, he said. He invited me to speak at the BSU and preach at other places. We stayed in touch over the years. At Baylor he majored in history and German. I had heard that if I wanted to do graduate work, it would be good to be able to read German, he said. I loved learning that language. He also loved studying history, especially world and American history. Jim worked his way through school by holding a job at Holt s Sporting Goods in Waco, and for his first three years he was involved in missions. Every Friday night the BSU went to African- American churches in various parts of Waco to minister to children, he said. He met his late wife, Patsy, at Baylor. She worked in the registrar s office, he said. She signed me up for a class, and she signed herself up for the same class as well. We married in 1959 and were married for 50 years. After Jim graduated from Baylor in 1960, the Hancocks moved to Louisville, Ky., where Patsy taught school and Jim worked on his master of divinity degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and served as pastor of a small American Baptist church in Indiana. One great influence on him there was David Mueller, a professor he first knew at Baylor. Another was Kyle Yates, who taught Old Testament. The greatest influence on my life was Wayne Oates, who taught us how to express care for people, he said. He was the supervisor for Clinical Pastoral Education, and we worked together to minister to people in Louisville. Following his seminary graduation in 1964, Jim returned to Texas to serve as pastor of First Baptist Church of Matador, First Baptist Church of Ozona and Second Baptist Church of Odessa. In 1975 he began a 19-year pastorate at First Baptist Church of Canyon, and his children grew up there. During those years he was a trustee for the Baptist Memorial Geriatric Center in San Angelo, a member of the executive board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and a trustee at Southern Seminary. From 1994 to 1996 Jim was director of missions for the Cap Rock Plains Baptist Association, and he held the same position in Lubbock until his retirement in From 2000 to 2006, he was an intentional interim minister for churches in a number of West Texas towns. In 2006 I moved to Dallas to be near my children, he said. Jana is director of counseling at Plano East High School, Jay works for a computer company, and Joe is general counsel for the Baptist Foundation of Texas. And I have six grandchildren. Jim already has jumped in as an adult Sunday School teacher at Wilshire and will begin service on the Pathways to Ministry Committee next year a fitting placement for someone with such a rich life experience in Christian ministry. For many years, Wilshire has provided a subscription to the Standard for all members who desire to receive it. That commitment will continue, but in a new way. Since 1888, the Standard has been distributed as a weekly or biweekly print newspaper. Beginning in January, though, the Standard will move to a digitalonly version accessible via the Internet. The online newspaper will be published every other week, and subscribers will be prompted via to view the new edition. At the same time, the Standard will begin printing a new monthly general interest magazine, Common Call. This magazine will carry many of the same types of inspirational feature stories previously found in the Standard. Common Call will be delivered to the church in bulk each month, and copies will be distributed in various places around the church. Digital subscriptions to the new online Standard will be entered for all Wilshire members with current addresses on file with the church. Members may then choose to manage these digital subscriptions at no cost. Should you desire not to receive the biweekly s, you may unsubscribe on your own. Should you not have a current on file with the church, please submit your information to skimball@ wilshirebc.org. Traveling during the holidays?
