1 NORTH STAR WHEEL Volume 45 Issue 4 July/August T H A N N U A L P O K E R R U N Maynard s Last Hand After 15 years, Maynard has decided to retire as dealer of the annual poker run. by Maynard Lemke Another good day in Minnesota for cruising, and another good poker run. It all started at our home, with a social hour and of course lots of good things to eat and drink. We handed out the gifts, dealt the first card, and then started the cruise, heading out to the next three card stops. This was the shortest route of all my poker runs, just over 18 miles. Now everyone had four cards, the last card would be dealt at the restaurant, the Lookout, in Maple Grove. Studebakers at this year s run were a 1963 Hardtop, 1962 Convertible, door sedan and a 1953 Coupe. Kerry Jackson won this year s poker run with three aces. That ties the best hand record, previously held by Clyde Ketelsen, who had three aces in 2004 and was the winner that year. Joan and I (Joan did another great job in hosting) want to thank all of the members who attended the poker runs, and drove their Studebakers (and brand X s) over the years. We ve had a very good time putting them on and hosting this club event. I have to mention the members who have attended the most poker runs, Jim & Andy Ringquist head the list. The next group is a little behind them. They are Jim & Fern Gieselman, Jerry & Rita Pearson and John & Mary Ann Kaczmarek. If any member would like to continue this North Star Chapter tradition, I am very willing to help all I can, including passing on five decks of cards. 2 From the Back of the Champ It is time for the International SDC meet in Colorado Springs. I hope you were able to attend this year. Sandy and I are going out a little early to visit with a college friend and his wife in Boulder. We are looking forward to visiting in person with John Lidberg, although he is deeply involved with the local chapter sponsoring the meet. He is always giving 110 percent. It will be good to see him and thank him for all the detailed preparations and work the local sponsoring chapter does for the SDC meet. Many of you are veterans of our two International SDC meets in Bloomington in 1994 and Red Wing in 2001 and know what it takes to put on a great meet. Wow, was it that long ago? We go to meet new and reacquaint ourselves with great Studebaker friends and enthusiasts from around the world. That s the part that we enjoy the most, meeting and getting together with great people that love Studebakers. Okay, I might have an adult beverage with some of our friends And it is so great to see all those vehicles in one spot. I ll take lots of pictures. This past month or two has been busy. First, let s not talk about the weather. I hope you made it through the storms with little or no damage and your power wasn t out too long. The weather was questionable the morning of the Memorial Day car show at the Black Smith Lounge so the vehicle count was down. But it stayed a nice day and the kids that showed up for the North Star Drags had a great time. Thanks to the committee for putting together another nice Memorial Day show. The assistance of the Boy Scouts honoring our fallen soldiers is a really nice addition to the show. And of course George and the staff from the Black Smith were great hosts. I had to work on the day of the Cars & Coffee at the Chanhassen AutoMotorplex event where members Bob and Kris hosted lucky club members who, from what I see in the pictures, all enjoyed themselves. When you see Maynard, ask him what the last winning hand was in the Poker Run. We saw several members and more Studebakers at MSRA s Back to the Fifties at the fairgrounds when we went Saturday afternoon. The weather for us was great but I know it wasn t nice all the time during the weekend. One of our friends found out his Corvette isn t waterproof when driving through deep puddles on his way home Friday night. Bob Waitz passed out lots of the Club s wooden nickels thanks for doing that Bob, we ll see if we get any new members. As always, when you drive your Studebaker vehicle around, you are a billboard for our club. If you need membership applications or the club s business cards, let me know. My contact information is at the end of the column. The Presidents Picnic will be in our back yard on Saturday, July 13th. We hope to have lots of pictures to show of the cars, trucks and Weasels out in Colorado to share with those showing up. It s a potluck bring something to grill and something to share. We ll provide the beverages. Starts at 12 noon eating around 12:30. We hope to see you there. And then August brings us: Aug. 7. Cruising The Croix car show, Stillwater. Tom Ketelsen Aug. 24. Annual Chapter Picnic. Hosts: Jim & Fern Gieselman. Aug Upper Mississippi Valley Zone Meet. St. Louis, MO. Hosted by Illinois-Missouri Gateway Chapter. Registration and details at Labor Day is the Orphan Car Show at the Black Smith Lounge and this year s Drive Your Studebaker Day on September 14th. Wow the fall comes fast Visit the chapter web page, lots of pictures posted of our events. ( Enjoy driving your Studebaker. We hope to visit with you at a club event or one of the local car shows Dean Elstad, President, NSC-SDC goldavanti@gmail.com DIRECTORY OF OFFICERS SDC NATIONAL OFFICERS Carl Thomason, President Mimi Halgren, Vice President Nita Ketchum, Secretary Jane Stinson, Treasurer UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ZONE Larry Swanson, National Board Director Duane Miller, Zone Coordinator Henry Votel, Regional Manager NORTH STAR CHAPTER Dean Elstad, President goldavanti@gmail.com Bob Waitz, Vice President bobwaitz@hotmail.com Andy Ringquist, Secretary jamesr@spacestar.net Joan Lemke, Treasurer & Sunshine jmlemke@comcast.net Kerry Jackson, Membership kerry@bormann.com Jim Gieselman, Director & Historian fgieselman@gmail.com Bob Shaw, Director & Activities bob.shaw2011@gmail.com Bob Stude, Newsletter bob@stude-becker.com NORTH LAND WHEELS CHAPTER Steve Carlson, President cedarwoodgsp@yahoo.com Jim Van Dell, Vice President/Trophy Chair avantiz@charter.net Linda Whitsitt, Secretary cedarwoodgsp@yahoo.com Shirley Van Dell, Treasurer & Membership avantiz@charter.net P A G E T W O

3 N E W S F R O M T H E N O R T H L A N D W H E E L S C H A P T E R VP on a Lark Very impressive on how SDC s executive board is ramping up the hype on the club and the Studebaker brand. After years of considering ourselves to be merely followers of a stoic old marque that they don t make anymore, we re coming into a new age of something exciting and achievable in the car hobby arena. And rightly so In that entry level Studebaker vehicles are still available at reasonable prices, parts availability is better than ever, the fact that Studebakers are really not difficult to work on, and they present a really unique image on the street or show field. Especially in contrast to the volumes of ho-hum cars and trucks of their vintage competitors. Plus, a Stude is a great conversation opener. The first question from the lips of young folks is What s a Studebaker? Who made it? That s a wide open opportunity, you ve already got em hooked and all you need do then is reel them in. There is an irony involved here also, in my earlier days my Studes were modified, fast, raced, and not very frugal on the use of fuel. My remaining 65 Daytona (which isn t progressing as wished) is going to retain its 283ci, albeit with a 4 bbl, but also a 200R4 OD to lessen the fuel stops. Times change. Point is, even a Stude Champion with overdrive is very much a today vehicle potentially with appeal to younger folks and the conservative not so young. Maybe there is an unseen benefit from the corrupt out-ofcontrol monetary and banking system our Nation has been straddled with after all. Let s see how many new members we can sign up this Summer. SDC Nat l is providing the advertising and tools, all we need to do is put forth the effort and utilize them. Enuf youthful stuff North Land Wheels Chapter s Matriarch, Shirley Van Dell turned 90 years young on April 4th. Family and friends celebrated her ninth decade at the Proctor Blackwoods Restaurant on Sunday, April 7th. Shirley is the one responsible for many firsts here in the Northland. Forty-two years ago when many people didn t even know what a swap meet and car show was, she started one at the Proctor Fairgrounds. Kinda like If you build it, they ll come and they did. Back then, the hobby was more of a guy s thing and the ladies stayed home. That didn t seem fair and over time with a little encouragement, the wives, girlfriends and ladies with cars became participants as well. The North Star Chapter was only a few years old but served mostly the Southern part of the state, so there was the birth of the North Land Wheels Chapter in Shirley was appointed Asst. Regional Director for Northern MN and subsequently served as Zone Coordinator for the Upper Mississippi Valley Zone which comprises the states of IL, IA, MN, MO, & WI, for many years. She also edited and published the North Star Wheel Newsletter for all of MN for about 14 years in the 80s and early 90s, winning 1st place and Senior 1st place Nat l SDC awards for excellence. When the Minnesota Association of Car Clubs was formed in the cities circa 1973, there was a Northern Association which includes clubs in Northern MN, Thunder Bay, and N.W. Wisconsin. She coordinated those events until turning it over to Mike Tillman in P A G E T H R E E Back when Miller Hill Mall was in its infancy, they offered to donate money to have cars on display and it happened. Barker s Island had many car shows, Mariner Mall was another with shows in its heyday. Those shows which have gone by the wayside weren t just for Studebakers, they included vehicles from the many clubs and individuals around the area. Many of the folks are still here, the cars are still here, some of the clubs remain active and Shirley (The Car Lady) is still keeping track of the car hobby events here in the Northland. Most everyone today knows what a swap meet and car show is and they still come. She s looking forward to our 42nd Annual on Sunday, August 11th. Happy Birthday Mom! Jim Van Dell
