1 MARCH 2007 The Hillholder Volume 32 Issue 3 March 2007 Journey s end in Loganville is site for march meeting Fred and Paula hosted the meeting held at Journey s End in Loganville. The meal was started at 2:00 and Dot Hunt gave the Blessing. We all enjoyed the very good food and excellent service. The meeting was called to order about 3:00 and everyone thanked the Martins for hosting. Barbara let everyone know that Cindy Lampman had had hip surgery and was home doing very good. It was also ask that everyone let Myrtle Burris know that we are thinking about her in her illness. We were glad to have Ron and Marilyn Sullivan long time members join us for this meeting. Sam Ensley, reported on the 4 th Ga. State Meeting. We still need someone to volunteer to sell the ads for the back of the T- shirts. It was discussed and voted on to sell these ads at $ each and to have 6 ads. It was mentioned that at this time we have 20 room nights reserved and that we needed to fill 100. Norma Hernandez reported that the Sunshine Chapter is having The 3 rd Annual Studebakers at Old Town in Kissimmee/ Orlando on March 17, It was mentioned that we still needed members to pay their Club Dues. Barbara Miller let everyone know that the next monthly meeting will be on April 1st at the Miller s Home an Old Fashion Cookout. It was brought up that some members would like to see classified ads in the Hill Holder. The 50/50 drawing of $26.00 was won by Sam Ensley. Meeting was adjourned and everyone went outside to look over the Studebakers present on this Sam hits the jackpot. Our hosts: the Martins. Finally we see the Sullivans. A monthly thing: gathering around the great looking Studebakers our members bring with them. 2 P AGE 2 T HE HILLHOLDER Other Studebaker editors have found that you don t have to lick stamps -What we already new There are the bones of the previous Hillholder editors who took the time and effort to not only edit the publications but also to painstakingly fold, insert and put stamps on all the Hillholder that have been mailed over the years. And don t forget the trips to the copy center. Multiply that by the hundreds of Studebaker Newsletters that have been and are still being published in that manner. Years ago at a trade show the USPS had a booth where they discussed the ability to do all this electronically. It got my attention. When the opportunity came to edit and publish the Hillholder, I used that service. Fortunately I could share all this technology with a new internet forum for Studebaker Newsletter editors. Henry Votel of the North Star Wheel read my post and decided to try it. Here is his flattering story. In record time! I am done with my 8 page newsletter this month to 130 members out of 159 that get a paper version. I "NEVER" --Printed out a final version, --Drove to the CopyMax Store for copies, --Waited minutes or came back another time for the copies, --Sat down to collate the pages, --Folded the newsletters, --Labeled the newsletters, --Placed first class stamps on the newsletters or had to get stamps, --Bundled up the newsletters and took them to the Post Office. The cost savings helped too The costs for our Chapter's newsletter dropped from.99 to.70 each and that included postage! Not counting my time and gas expense. I'm going to give Don Smith a big hug if I ever meet him! There is a learning curve in doing this but if I can do it so can you. Go to the USPS site and give it a test run using an old newsletter that you mail to yourself. Samples of their various products can be mailed to you so you can see them. I know everyone enjoyed the food, fellowship and the Studebakers that were present. It is so good to know that soon the weather will be good and everyone can look forward to dusting off and driving their Studebakers to the meetings. We were all glad to have the Sullivan s join us for the meeting. We all hope that Cindy Lampman and Myrtle Burris are both on their way to a full recovery. Local Studebaker Owner Offers Up this 1942 Commander Skyway A rare car indeed, this is a classic antique, not many 1942's of any kind. try to find another 42 commander skyway, serial# , built in South Bend, Indiana one of the last cars to come from that plant before WWII car in great shape/runs good/driven every couple of weeks in original condition. Needs a few things done to be perfect, has no rust, paint is thought to be original, paint has some flaws/wearing thin interior in good shape, has been garaged since our family and said to have been garaged for last 30 yrs, 6 cylinders/horsepower, 94@3600rpm, 3 speed with overdrive, hill holder clutch, original climatizer heater, electric wiper motor. 5 P AGE Amelia Island Concours d'elegance, Not just another car show A friend invited me and my family to use his condo on Amelia Island. So Spring break seemed like a good time to take him up on that offer. So with a late arrival on Saturday, we were up Sunday walking around the marina when I saw a poster in a shop. It read, Amelia Island Concours d Elegance, March Oh no, here I am on Amelia Island, a car guy, and one of the grandest car shows of the year is down the street. So I got my wife to drive me to the show and drop me off. What a spectacle! Every car was absolutely perfect. Since this is by invitation only, I would expect that. The grounds at the Ritz Carlton were like carpet. This was part of their golf course. Pack with the big spenders of all time. Admission was $45 each and their were throngs of people looking on. No car later than 1974 was one of the rules. I was amazed at the quality of the paint and the upholstering. Whoever restored these cars were the finest artisans of their profession. I had to think that many of these cars had this work done in California where there is a cluster of specialists that cater to this large state with a large amount of cars (all rust free, they say, because of the lack of humidity. What a show. I saw it by accident, but now I can say I was there.
