1 61 65 Confederate Courier United Daughters of the Confederacy - North Carolina Division Volume 44 Number 3 Division President s Report Daughters, I know you are all busy getting your end of the UDC year work done. It s hard to believe that this UDC year is practically gone. Thank you for all your hard work to honor your Confederate Ancestors. The deadline for our next Confederate Courier will be August 4, Please your photos and articles to Amy Huss, Editor newest address: amyhuss@ icloud.com. The GI Bears are still for sale. Remember the proceeds go toward the President General s Patriotic Project, Action Track Chairs for Veterans. The bears are also for sale on our Division Website. I hope you have also partnered with the Department of Defense to honor and remember our Vietnam Veterans. The Commemoration has been extended through Veterans Day 2025! Thank you for your wonderful support of the clean up and restoration of Confederate monuments and markers damaged in Oakwood Cemetery. A check for over $4,000 was presented to the Executive Director, Robin Simonton, by Melanie Perryman on behalf of the Division. Following our Spring Board Meeting in April, the Global War on Terror plaque was dedicated. Remarks were brought to us by Aileen Ezell, Chairman of our Confederate Monuments and Memorial Markers Committee, Gail Sifford, Division Recorder of Military Service Awards, and Carolina Cooper, Chairman of the House of Memory and State Confederate Cemetery Committee. A poem was read by Margaret Sink, past Recorder of Military Service Awards. Our Chaplain, Karen Edward, recited the prayers. We were honored to be asked to be a part of the rededication of the grave marker of a Texas Confederate, Jared K. White, Company B, 8th Texas Cavalry, and Terry s Texas Rangers, buried in Willow Dale Cemetery in Goldsboro. Ellen Bryan, President of the Confederate Heritage Chapter in Goldsboro, and her members care for the grave and place a yellow rose on it each year. North Carolina ladies in Arlington, VA The Children of the Confederacy Convention was held in Greensboro on April 29th and 30th, It was a wonderful convention. The tour of historic Mendenhall Plantation with the hot dog lunch was a big hit. Congratulations go to Caroline Sterling who was elected the NC Division CofC President. Attending also were Laura Conner, 3rd Vice President General, and Mackie Storage, CofC President General. We were saddened by the death of an Honorary Division President, Frances Ola Weston Register of the Guilford 301 as well as Kathryn Baird, Past Division President, of Robeson 942. These were ladies of many talents who dearly loved the UDC. They will be missed. August 2002 Page 1

The link will be on the website shortly as well as the Convention Call. Remember to tell them you are with the UDC to get the UDC room rate. District IV is the host Chapter with Joanne Sharpe the Convention Chairman. Please gather together nice items for sale and bring them to the Sales room to Connie or Wilda on Wednesday and Thursday. I was honored to have attended the Confederate Memorial Day services on May 7, 2016, at Oakwood Cemetery. It was moving and meaningful. I was proud to have presented, along with our Vice President, Donna Snipes, the Stonewall Jackson award to Van Langley for all of his hard and tireless work on our Grand Old Lady. What would we do without him??? Also, I was pleased to have been invited to the Madison-Mayodan-Greys Chapter s bestowal service of Military Service Awards. Twelve awards were presented with a lovely reception following. The Membership Directory is for sale. Mrs. Wilda (Council) and her son, Chip, have been gracious and have again printed this much needed book for us. Please let her know if you would like one. The cost is $20.00 and well worth it. Mrs. Wilda is in the Stonewall Jackson Chapter. Have you checked the Division and General Websites lately? If not, you may be missing important information and updates. Note when doing your reports, the Education report may be found on the Division Website. I have enjoyed attending your District Meetings and regret that I could not attend them all. It s a nice time to meet new Daughters and to renew acquaintances with others. I especially like hearing of the many things you do for our Organization. It was a pleasure to have presented the New Member Certificate to a new Daughter at the District IV meeting and also at Spring Board. Massing of the Flags was Saturday, June 4th at 2pm at our UDC Headquarters in Richmond. The program was great and our President General did a splendid job. On Sunday, there was a Confederate Memorial Service at Arlington National Cemetery at 11am presented by the DC Division. The featured guest was Mrs. Jefferson Davis. Unfortunately, the UDC was not permitted to bring in the Confederate Colors this year. However, we did say the Salute to the Confederate flag. We proudly wore it on our Insignia and also had a picture of it on our programs. Again, I want to remind you to look on the General Website and copy the forms from there for your reports. These are the up to date, most current forms. Be sure you send the form listing your new Chapter officers as well as your 250 word Chapter report to Division Recording Secretary. If you have not received your 2015 Minutes Book, contact Mildred Goss to get one. Look on page 28 to see the UDC Calendar for This will advise you when your reports should be submitted and to whom. The deadline for articles for the October (the NC) Issue of the UDC Magazine was June 1st. I look forward to reading that Issue to see your submissions. Have you seen our newest pin, the Founder Pin, with the photo of Mrs. Parsley? I know you ll want one, they are stunning. You may print the form from the Division Website and send it to our Division Vice President, Donna Snipes. Mrs. Eliza Parsley, the Mother of the North Carolina Division, has had her make over. Her portrait which hung in the dining room of our House, was cleaned and restored. She will have a new frame soon and be placed in the dining room (at a date to be determined) for all to see. See remarks from our Division Vice President for more information on Mrs. Parsley. Please don t forget to send to me your Monument Inspection and Monument Repair Reports. The weather is nice now and you should be able to get out and inspect them. Don t forget to include photos. Page 2

3 Division President s Report contimued North Carolina ladies at 2016 Massing of the Flags Richmond, VA The sale of the NC Founders Pin continues to go well. As of this writing there are only 20 left! That is a good thing! While on the topic of Mrs. Parsley, she is presently getting her new frame. The new frame will complement the portrait and be in the same style as the original. While she was being restored, Mrs. Hessling asked an expert who deals with frames to come look at it and he stated that the frame would cost more to restore than it was worth. Once the framing is complete, Mrs. Parsley will be going to the country for a long rest. She will be well rested and in peak health again for her unveiling at the Division Convention. Chapter Vice Presidents I want to strongly encourage you to avail yourself of the Vice President Manual. The Manuals are available online on the General Website. If you happen not to have a computer, please ask your Chapter President to download it and print it off put it on a thumbdrive and take it to Staples or Office Depot and have them print it off. Those manuals are a must to help you do your job. Vice President Thank you for what you are doing for our sisters and children who have been the victims of domestic violence. This is our Daughters for Safe Sisters Benevolent project, Tammy Shropshire, Chairman. Also, I want to thank you for your book donations to county and school libraries for our Books for a Better Southern Education. We strive to teach children the true Southern history. These are two ways we can accomplish the Objectives of our Organization. Daughters, you are awesome in your generous donations of your time and talents and donations to the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the varied projects. I am so proud of all of you, My Ladies. I am honored to be your President. Pat Gasson Also want to remind you that every organization has a chain of command and the UDC is no different. The chapter member who wants to order Insignia fills out an order form gives it to the Chapter VP who proofs the order & makes a copy of the order/proofs for her records. sends it to the Division VP who processes the order & makes a copy for her records sends it to VP General who processes the order. IF there is an issue with the order then it reverses.general to Division to Chapter to Member.. the member does not contact the General Officer. No one has sent an order with a staple in it way to go ladies! I want to encourage every Chapter to have a New Members Class or Meeting. Remember when you first joined the UDC and all the questions you had and all the things you didn t know. Take a new member under your wing and be their mentor, not forever, but until they learn the ropes. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Division Vice President. Donna Snipes Page 3

4 Third Vice President The NC Division CofC held their annual convention on April 29 30, 2016 in Greensboro, NC. It was a huge success. We started the weekend with a Pizza Party on Friday night. We decided to do this to help everyone get to know everyone since we had several new attendees. The party was for the kids as well as the adults. In attendance to the convention were four General CofC Officers: Mc- Gowan Storage, President General; Hannah Harper, Vice President General; Ashley Gray, Historian General; and William Gray, Custodian General. We also had Mrs. Laura Connor, Director General and Patricia Gasson, NC Division President, in attendance. The Business meeting was held and new officers were elected with Caroline Sterling elected to be the Division President for She will take over after the General Convention in July. Other Officers elected were: Patrick Sterling, Vice President; Leann Miller, 2nd Vice President; Taylor Morefield, 3rd Vice President; Kirkland Hunter, Recording Secretary; Alyvia Gaiser, Treasurer; Christopher Wilson, Historian; Natalie McBride, Chaplain; and Taylor Crouch, Custodian. I know they will do a great job in the upcoming year. After our business meeting on Saturday we had a picnic lunch and a tour of Mendenhall Plantation in Jamestown, NC. This was a very informative tour and everyone learned so much about the house and family that had lived here. That evening at our banquet we had the honor of a delicious taco dinner. Afterwards Peggy Johnson, NC Division Registrar presented her program entitled, A Mother s Story. The kids loved it and asked numerous questions. This true story is about Peggy s Great Grandmother and the loss of her sons during the War. We officially announced the winners of two CofC scholarships to President Ashley Gray and to Past President William Gray. Both will be attending UNC- Charlotte in the fall and both will receive $ per semester. The NC Division CofC would like to thank Guilford 301 UDC and the Lizzie Lindsay 776 and Burke Davis 478 CofC for hosting this convention. We would especially like to thank Mrs. Michele Miller for all of her hard work organizing all of the events. Y all did a great job! Next years convention will be held in Salisbury, NC. Thank you to the Charles F. Fisher 73 Chapter CofC and the Robert F. Hoke 78 UDC Chapters for agreeing to host. We will have those dates soon. The NC CofC is currently making plans to attend the CofC General Convention July 2 23, 2016 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The CofC Alumnae will be hosting and North Carolina will have past members helping out as Marshalls, guides and anywhere else they are needed. We look forward to attending and hopefully seeing you there as well! Registration is on line at HQUDC.ORG Karen Powers All Attendees of the 2016 Cof C Convention at Mendenhall Plantation. 5 Third Vice President s Report continued Peggy Johnson presenting the program about her great grandmother during the War. Registrar love learning new things and often I you are my teachers. Here are some ideas that you have shared with me. When submitting Applications with common proof, one Chapter registrar puts a listing with her paper work to let me know how each proof was connected. This cuts down on the time needed to process these Applications. Thanks for the great idea. Another Registrar, realizing that not everyone is familiar with North Carolina and its county system, will add a map when needed to prove place. Good idea. This past weekend, my husband and I visited several cemeteries looking for tombstones to prove ancestry for people. After 150 years, these stones are crumbling and becoming unreadable. We are the ones to record the history and save the names of the people of the Confederacy. I know that you take your office seriously and see how necessary good record keeping is to our history. Keep up the good work keep submitting those applications. Peggy Johnson Recording Secretary Ladies it is that time of year when we start gathering our information for the Minutes Book and other reports. Chapter Presidents on your chapter report for the minutes book please follow this guideline: Name of Chapter, location Number of members, District Meetings when, time List officers with name, address, phone number and address (do not list husbands name as it will not be in the minutes book.) then your report 250 words or less. This wall has the names of all men who died on the battlefield serving our country. Several of our members dressed in period dress and the men dressed in grey serving as our color guard. With the firing of muskets and laying of wreaths, it reminded me of the services that our forbearers held. One of the highlights of the service was this poem written by Tammy Shropshire. Flowers for the Fallen By: Tammy Shropshire I brought a bunch of flowers The kind you loved so well And lay them on the granite That marks the day you fell I wish that you could see them Perhaps you somehow do This small but faithful token Of how we honor you Thank you to all who honored the soldiers of the Confederacy on the Confederate Memorial Day season.
