Please be sure to read the articles from your Division Officers and Committee Chairmen for important updates. It s hard to believe that this year is so quickly coming to an end. You have done excellent work for our Organization and your Chapter reports reflect that. You are to be commended. I hope everyone had a great summer. Even though many Chapters don t meet during the summer, we know the work for our Organization continues all year. I hope you have had planning meetings to get everything organized as we are now in our new UDC year. Some Chapters have new Presidents and/or Chapter Officers. Thank you ALL for serving both past and present Chapter officers, Committee chairmen and appointed officers. I realize some Daughters are hesitant to serve as an officer or Committee chairman, but we all had to start somewhere and I know there are ladies, not only in your Chapter, but on the Division level, who will be glad to offer advice and help. Our thoughts now turn to our Division Convention which will be here before we know it. The Convention Call is posted on our website and was sent via to Chapters so you should have a copy. The dates are October 5-8, 2016 and the venue is the Sheraton Four Seasons at Greensboro. If you haven t made reservations yet, be sure to ask for the UDC rate when you call. The hotel is easy on and off of I-40, the parking is great with no garage or fees and the rooms and food are really nice. There is a mall close by in case you forget anything. This year we will have a separate Hospitality Room. The room number will be provided upon registration. This will be a place for you to sit down, relax, have refreshments and rest. The Chairman of the Hospitality Room is Susan Redman. The room number will be disclosed upon registration. This is an election year and our Division Officers will be elected. The deadline for everything is September 5th. Please be sure, Presidents, that you send or have sent your credential form in to the Chairman, Barbara Pugh. Delegates carry the Chapter vote. Please see the Nominating Committee Chairman s report for their slate of Division Officers in this Courier. Our special guest will be our President General, Pam Trammell, who will install our new Officers. The Vice President, Donna Snipes, will also be installing the incoming District Directors. We are also honored to have with us another special guest, Caroline Sterling, NC Division President of the Children of the Confederacy. It was my pleasure to have been a guest at Guilford Chapter s Luncheon in May and to have seen the program presented by Dr. Douglas Butler. It was great! We are happy to have Dr. Butler as our speaker at Historical Evening on Friday night of our Convention. You are in for a treat. District IV is the host District for our Convention, Joanne Sharpe, District Director. They are doing a marvelous job in preparing a wonderful Convention for us. Thank all of you ladies, very much. 2 Division President s Report - continued Our own Michele Miller from the Guilford Chapter, is running for 3rd Vice President General. I know she has the love and support of North Carolina and will do an excellent job and will also make NC proud. The General Convention will be at the Omni Hotel in Richmond, VA November 3-7, Our incoming General Officers will be elected. Chapter Presidents, please remember when submitting your credentials form, to also send a copy to the NC Division President. This will be to the incoming President who will be elected at our Division Convention. We will have an opportunity to meet the candidates and caucus. This way the delegates will know for whom to vote. You should have received your copy of the UDC Magazine for August. Look on page 20 which shows the condensed Convention program. Page 21 has more information and page 22 and 23 reflect the meal information, Page information and pre-registration form. Note on page 22 the event dates are incorrect. The Pre-Convention tour Stratford Hall is Thursday November 3rd The Magazine Luncheon is Friday, November 4th Presidents Evening Banquet is Saturday November 5th Transportation to Memorial Service is Sunday November 6th Friendship Dinner is Sunday November 6th Post Convention Tour is Tuesday November 8th The entire General Convention Call will be available soon. Presidents will need to submit information from that Call. Please continue to check our Division and General Websites often as things have and will continue to change. I had the privilege to have attended the 116th birthday of the John W. Dunham Chapter in Wilson on July 9th. President, Beth Boykin, and the Daughters of the Dunham Chapter were most gracious. Daughters from the Bethel Heroes were also in attendance. President Boykin showed everyone the original Chapter charter. The Chapter has done outstanding UDC work throughout all 116 years and continues to do so. Congratulations, John W. Dunham daughters for a wonderful birthday! I want to say thank you to our Pages, the ladies who make everything run smoothly at Convention and make us look good! Having been a Page myself, I know what it entails. Ladies you are essential to us and I appreciate all you do. Kristi Rudd Johnson, Chairman of Pages, is awesome. Thank you Kristi for everything. By the way, if you have never considered Paging, give it a try. I know you ll love it. I also want to thank my Committee Chairmen and Committee members. Ladies, you have done a splendid job during this term and I don t know what I would have done without you. You readily agreed when asked to serve and worked hard for your committee. Thank you ALL. I especially want to thank all Chapters who took the time to inspect Confederate monuments and then, if needed, to repair them. I have received your reports and they will be filed at our House along with all the information concerning our NC Confederate Monuments. We must never let these symbols of our Confederate heritage crumble and be forgotten. Also, thank you to all who helped with the repair and restoration of our precious monuments, markers and plaques during the past upheaval we had to suffer. The disregard, disrespect and irreverent acts to anything that represents our Confederate heritage are not acceptable and hurt us deeply. You have shown restraint, acted like the true Southern ladies you are and handled the situation in a manner befitting your Southern upbringing and Confederate heritage. I am proud of you. My Appointed Officers, Ruthann Mittlestadt, Kathy Brewer and Karen Edwards have done a splendid job and I appreciate all your efforts. Patsy Whitfield, my Sergeant at Arms, I thank you for your dedication and service. Amy, you have done an outstanding job as Editor of our Confederate Courier. With the passage of the new by-law, twice as many issues had to be produced, but you were up to the challenge and the Courier is awesome! Page 2

3 Division President s Report - continued The United Daughters of the Confederacy wouldn t be the UDC without everyone working together. You have done just that. You are Daughters Working Together to Honor Your Confederate Ancestors. Your work for our Organization has been exemplary and I congratulate each one of you for a job well done. As our President General s theme for her term states, you are.daughters Making a Difference! It has been an honor to have represented you, My Ladies, these past two years. I thank you for your love, support, hard work and dedication to me and to our wonderful Organization. Never take for granted how fortunate you are to be a descendant of a brave Confederate. He fought for his beliefs, his Southland and for the Cause. That s what we have to continue to do. Our Southland and our Confederate Heritage are important and dear to us all. We must continue to fight for our heritage and to honor and remember our Confederates. It is our duty as UDC ladies to act like ladies, but as our Ritual states we should be loyal to our sacred principles, remember our gallant Confederate defenders and perpetuate the fame of their noble deeds unto succeeding generations. We certainly have nothing to regret in our defense of the rights and the honor of our Southland.ever! Looking forward to seeing you in October! We are at the close of another UDC year and it s been a busy one. Daughters have ordered insignia, two chapters had Chapter Pins approved (Capt. Samuel A. Ashe 2572 and Bennett Place 2241) and are awaiting their return from the manufacturer and one Chapter (Bethel Heroes 636) has begun the process of getting a Chapter Pin approved. The portrait of Mrs. Parsley has been restored and she received a new frame. I wanted to know just how many Chapters have a Chapter Pin. Responses from the sent out showed that Asheville 104 and Cape Fear 3 have Chapter pins and with the addition of the two that have been approved, we have a total of four with the hope of a fifth one. The biggest regret of the year is that two Daughters passed away before receiving their insignia. It was a sad set of circumstances that was unfortunate. There were issues with the engraver death of an engraver and then a piece of equipment broke and neither of these can be solved overnight. And yes, the engraver took vacation time.should they have postponed the vacation time until the orders were caught up, naturally we think so, but that s not our call. The President General, Vice President General and the Business Office all were working very hard to solve the issues and get the Vice President Pat Gasson Insignia orders back on track. I know you found it very frustrating and so did I. I even asked why we couldn t have a back-up engraver on hand just for circumstances such as this..what I did not understand is that the existing contract has been in place for a long time and going with another engraver would up the cost of the Insignia to the point that many would/could not afford to place an order. I would continue to encourage Chapters to have New Member Orientation. This would be a great time to familiarize members with the workings of the UDC, expected etiquette, job descriptions, how to s, etc. Think about when you first joined and the many questions you had. There are less than 20 NC Founders Pins left and they will be available at Convention. The plan is to unveil the portrait of Mrs. Parsley at Convention and I think you will be very pleased when you see her! I am very excited, pleased and anxious for you all to see her! 4 am pleased to announce we have I awarded four scholarships for Fall Congratulations to: Caleb Vinson Cox awarded the Shuford Scholarship, sponsored by Harper House 2258, Bentonville. He will be attending North Carolina State University Second Vice President me research the particulars on this scholarship! It was truly rewarding to have all four recipients respond back signing the new Scholarship Agreement this officer devised to help clear up some confusion we have had in the past. Thank you Chapters who sponsored these students for helping them comply. It is so disheartening to see a student lose a scholarship because they fail to carry a full academic load for the semester! Ashley Allison Gray awarded the Anderson-Ransom Scholarship, sponsored by the Battle of Bentonville 818 Chapter, Mooresville. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte William Charles Gray awarded the Burgyn-Daniel Scholarship, sponsored by the Battle of Bentonville 818 Chapter, Mooresville. He will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Lindsey Spenser Ward awarded the Anson County Scholarship, sponsored by Cape Fear 3, Wilmington. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. This officer was excited to discover that the Division had a scholarship that has been overlooked and has gone unused in recent memory. It is the Anson County Scholarship and has no restrictions (meaning the recipient does not have to be from or sponsored by a Chapter from Anson County). Thank you to Caroline Mazzeo, our Division Treasurer, who was of invaluable assistance in helping As of yet, I have requested but not received any word from our Second Vice President of General Nelma Crutcher on whether any of the applicants from North Carolina Division were awarded any General Scholarships. Thank you for placing your trust in me to serve you as your Second Vice President of the Division. It has truly been an honor and a responsibility that I have taken seriously and tried to comply with in all aspects. Additionally I thank you for all the work your chapters are doing to assist these wonderful students in applying for both Division and General Scholarships! I know you will do all you can for our next 2nd VP you elect at our Division Convention! 5 Third Vice President It has been a fantastic summer. The NC CofC has just come home from the annual CofC General convention. It was held in Chattanooga, TN this year and was hosted by the CofC Alumni. It was so much fun! The pretour was to Ruby Falls. This is a cavern with a beautiful waterfall at the end of the path. After the first business day meeting we all loaded buses and went to Lake Minnie. This is an amusement/water park. The kids and adults had a great time. I enjoyed the Lazy River the most. This park was built on land that the troops traveled on to leave Chattanooga during the war. The next day (Friday) was packed full of fun. We took buses and went to Lookout Mountain. We rode the Incline Railroad, visited Pointe Park, Rock City, Chickamauga Battlefield, laid a wreath at the historic Cemetery in Chattanooga and finished that day with a river cruise down the Tennessee River on the Southern Belle. Everyone was exhausted but had a great time. On Saturday, new officers were elected with Miss Hannah Clarice Harper being elected President General. That evening at the Presidents dinner, William Gray, Ashley Gray and Loren Sterling experienced the rite of passage ceremony. This is a very emotional ceremony as the CofC members who are aging out are placed on one side with a candle and the alumni are on the other side. The lights are dimmed and as the CofC members name is called, the alumni members walk to the middle to meet the CofC member, blow out the candle and escort them to the alumni side. This is such a beautiful ceremony. I hope everyone gets the opportunity to witness this. North Carolina was well represented with fifteen attendees, including UDC Members, CofC Alumni members and of course CofC members. We were honored to have Miss Loren Sterling named as Honorary President of General and to have Mrs. Michele Miller awarded the Robert E. Lee Award for her support of the CofC during the first business session. We are so proud of both of you! Next year the convention will be held in Montgomery, Alabama. Mark your calendar today to attend. It is the third week in July! Caroline Sterling officially took over as Division President after the close of convention. She is currently working on her goals and getting her projects finalized. The North Carolina CofC Convention is also in its planning stages with the convention to be held in Salisbury, NC April 7-8, Plans are to have a ghost walk on Friday night and instead of a Saturday evening Banquet we will be having a banquet luncheon. This will allow those who need to leave to be able to attend all events and not have to spend two nights. Details will follow so keep looking at the NCUDC website for further details. The NC CofC is doing exciting things and we would love for you to get involved! 6 Page 6 Recording Secretary Ladies it is that time of year when we start gathering our information for the Minutes Book and other reports. Chapter Presidents on your chapter report for the minutes book please follow this guideline: Name of Chapter, location Number of members, District Meetings when, where, time List officers with name, address, phone number and address (do not list husbands name as it will not be in the minutes book.) Then your report 250 words or less. (If it is over 250 words, it will be cut). I am expecting reports from all division officers with their awards, all district directors, all committee chairman for this minutes book in a WORD document as an attachment. DO NOT SEND IT AS A PDF file as we cannot change a pdf file. If you do not know how to send an attachment then put the report in the body of the . All reports for the minutes book should be sent to me at my address mildredgoss@nc.rr.com and not by snail mail. These reports are due July 15 along with your other reports. Please don t forget to put the name of person completing the report. Mildred Goss Treasurer Thank you Chapter Treasurers! You completed the per capita forms for so that all General and Division dues could be posted on time per capita forms (FY 2017) will be available in November and are due by Feb. 15th, You should begin collecting dues from members this fall so that you don t have to scramble to collect at the last minute. I will to you the Remittance Voucher and Per Capita list of members. This saves so much on postage. For those that don t have , I will mail the paperwork to you. Dues this year will include a Chapter Assessment of $5.00 per member effective September 1, 2016 for a two year period (2017 & 2018). The funds collected by the assessment will be directed to the Division General Fund where it will help defray the rising cost of operating our organization, for example: postage, printing and insurance needs. This means the total dues for a member that are sent to the Division Treasurer are $30.00 which represents $15.00 for General and $15.00 for Division. Former members that wish to be reinstated are always encouraged. For $45.00, a former member can be reinstated. Please include a note with member s name and chapter with payment. The Division Treasurer has the Reinstatement forms to process for General. Remember that Granddaughter, Great, Great Great, Great Great Great Club dues should be collected as well and sent directly to those Club Treasurers for those members. The Annual Financial Report for each chapter is due to by October 31st. The time frame is 09/01/2015 to 08/31/2016. It is mandatory that each chapter file its Annual Financial Report which is due to by October 31st. The time frame is 09/01/2015 to 08/31/2016. It is mandatory that each chapter file this report with the Division Treasurer, in order for our non-profit status to stay intact. The NEW form is available at org Members Login FORMS under Treasurer General. It is called Annual Financial Report for all Entities. This is a new form as of 2015 to be used by all entities. I will or mail a copy to you and I will also have copies at Convention. Also, each Granddaughter Club treasurer must file an Annual Financial Report to that General Club Treasurer. Please send the Division Treasurer a copy as well. The Federal required filing with the IRS of an e-postcard, aka, Form 990-N, must be done online at www. irs.gov anytime between September 1 and January 15. This is a NEW website and filing process set up by the IRS in There is a NEW sign on and password procedure that is DIFFERENT than before so if you filed for your Chapter in the past, the process is not the same. As voted on by our Division, the Division Treasurer will complete the filings for each entity in our Division. I will be completing this filing for each Chapter and Club before the deadline of January 15, Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Division Treasurer. 7 Registrar Let me thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as Division Registrar. The best part of this position is meeting and getting to know so many of you. We have followed family lines and shared the stories of our families, all the while dedicating ourselves to remembering the names of the men who served to protect their homes. Being a Registrar is not the easiest of jobs but you have persevered. There have been days when I wanted to pull my hair out, and there were days I am sure you would have helped me, but we have survived. We have faced and hammered out the problems in applications and often you were the teachers. Remember how important you are to the history of our country and to this organization. Without your hard work there would be no United Daughters of the Confederacy. Continue to do the great job that you have always done in reaching out to ladies who have an interest in their family history and the history of our Southland. Peggy Johnson Call for Pages! In UDC Love, Kristi Rudd Johnson, NC Page Chairman Historian have enjoyed working with and I getting to know many of our North Carolina Daughters over the past two years. You are certainly a hard working group of ladies. It s not easy to keep our true history out there and I applaud you for your efforts. As a reminder Chapter Yearbooks and Newsletters were to have been mailed to me already if they are to be judged this year. Any chapter is welcome to bring their yearbooks and newsletters to the convention for display, but they will NOT be judged. Scrapbooks and Pressbooks will be judged AT the convention if they are brought to the appropriate display room (as listed in the convention program) not later than Thursday October 6, I have had a number of questions regarding yearbooks, newsletters and scrapbooks. So let me say, there is no bylaw or unwritten UDC law that I am aware of says a chapter Must create and submit a yearbook, newsletter, scrapbook or pressbook every year. If a chapter wants to create their own rules/ guidelines for format and frequency, that is fine if you do not want these items judged. However if you want your chapter s yearbook, newsletter, scrapbook or pressbook judged for Division or General Awards, then you must adhere to the rules/guidelines as published in the Historian General s Handbook or the UDC General website. I think the most important thing to remember is that the chapter should decide how best to record their chapter history as well as communicate with each other. The rules/guidelines are ONLY for those items that will be submitted for judging, and while awards are nice, I think it is far more important to find the best way for your chapter to document and preserve your history as well as to disseminate information to your membership. 8 Recorder of Military Service Awards What happens once you send your Military Service Award application to your Division Recorder until you receive your package containing the medal, the certificate and the chapter copy of the processed application? I m glad you asked! Here is the journey. Once the Division Recorder receives your package, she will first verify that there is a Form 36 and a check attached. She will verify that the amount of the check matches the amount indicated on Form 36. She will check to make sure that the Checklist is attached and completed with the exception of the Division signature (I will sign indicating that everything is there). After information on these documents is verified, the Division Recorder will then verify the Checklist against the application, making sure that information is included and correct on the application, the dates for the medals are correct, that the DD214 and proof of military service are included, the application is on the required UDC acid free paper, and two copies on plain paper are included (the original and both copies must have original signatures). After everything is verified, the Recorder makes a copy of the package, puts it on her Excel spreadsheet, and sends it priority (not express) mail to the Recorder General, Ann Butler Brown in Florida. The Recorder General sends the names of the applicants with the medals requested to the Business Office in Richmond to verify that the medal has not been previously awarded. Once she has the information from the Business Office, she can proceed. She verifies everything again, and if everything is correct, she signs all three documents, prepares the certificate with all the information, matches the medal to the correct award, and sends the medal, the certificate, and the two copies back to the Division Recorder. This year alone, she will have processed 400 awards before she leaves office in November! Once the Division Recorder receives the package from the Recorder General, she verifies that the medal is correct for the award; the number on the medal matches the number on the certificate and the two copies. She then sends the medal, certificate and one of the copies to the chapter, and sends the other copy to be filed in the Division. There you have it! I want to thank each Chapter Recorder for the work she has done during my term. It has made my job much easier when I see that you have taken the time to dot all the I s and cross all the T s. You all have done an awesome job! It has been my honor to serve the North Carolina Division as your Recorder of Military Service Awards. Gail Edwards Sifford Division Chaplain had never thought of how important the chaplain s job is. But once asked the position quickly I became very important. Important to chapters and Daughters family members. As with our Confederate veterans, we need to remember our UDC sisters with memorials and their families with love. Each chapter president should assign someone to be responsible for submitting a DECEASED MEMBER FORM to the chaplain as soon as a death becomes known. This allows the Division to send a card to relatives in a timely fashion. Please complete the form as completely as possible. All of the information asked for is important. An obituary has so much information and can be sent with the Deceased Member Form. It seems that all committees have a report and when Mrs. Gasson began her term, she requested a DECEASED CHAPTER MEMBER RECORD form. This form requests the names of all chapter members who have passed away during the current UDC year (9/1 8/31). This may seem redundant but the Division does not want to forget any of our Daughters so this is just a safe guard. This DE- CEASED CHAPTER MEMBER RECORD needs to be submitted to the chaplain by September 8. Both of the listed forms can be easily found on the NC Division website. 9 North Carolina Division 120th Annual Convention October 5 8, 2016 Members of District IV are excited about hosting the North Carolina Division 120th Annual Convention October 5-8, 2016 in Greensboro. Convention organizing committee members have been working diligently for over a year to put together a beautiful and enjoyable convention experience. They are looking forward to meeting with Daughters from across the state. Hotel reservation information and forms for convention registration, meal selection and more are available from chapter presidents or may be downloaded from the NC Division website at District IV members are providing a hospitality suite. The suite is a place to enjoy beverages and snacks to relax between business sessions and to meet and greet other Daughters. The suite will be open on Thursday and Friday, October 6 and 7 when the convention is not in session. Attendee registration packets will contain detailed information about hospitality suite location and open times as well as information about Greensboro attractions, restaurants and shopping opportunities We look forward to seeing you in Greensboro in October. 11 In Memoriam Barbara Terry Hall joined the UDC and the Granville Grays Chapter in January, These 2+ years were busy times for her. She was both dedicated to the UDC and passionate about her Southern heritage. She had 14 approved applications -1 original and 13 supplementals. She purchased 14 ancestor bars, in addition to many other pieces of insignia. She recruited 7 new members for our Chapter. She was an attendee at Chapter meetings, District meetings, Division and General Conventions. She and her husband attended Confederate related places and events in many states, where they often dressed out in period clothing. She was so proud to wear her outfit, made especially for her in Gettysburg. Earlier this year she volunteered to complete the year as Recorder of Military Service Awards for our chapter, a position she loved. She had great potential, and I could see her becoming chapter president, and even becoming a Division officer. In spite of her enthusiasm for life, Barbara was plagued with several health issues, which at times caused her much discomfort. During an emergency hospital visit, Barbara was diagnosed with cancer of the liver, and passed away several days later on May 14, 2016, at the age of 67. Among others, she had requested that memorials go to the Granville Grays to purchase Military Service Awards. She was a person whom every chapter would love to have for a member. Page 11

We have an incredible spirit of giving in our Division, and it is always exciting to read about the various organizations donated to, and projects undertaken through your reports sent by each Chapter. 13 Chapter News Robert F. Hoke Chapter 78, Salisbury: The Hoke Chapter was pleased to host the District III Meeting in Salisbury at the Rowan Public Library on Saturday, April 23, Current US, POW-MIA, and NC flags were displayed on 9-foot flag poles along with the 1st National and NC period flags. Framed pictures of the Confederate Monuments and Memorials in Salisbury, Concord, Mooresville, Winston-Salem, Statesville, and Albemarle were placed on the Memorial Table. These pictures had decorated tables in 2013 when District III hosted the Division Convention. The historical program was provided by Hoke Chapter Honorary Associate Member Ed Curtis who spoke about the April 12, 1865 Confederate victory at Fort York just outside of Salisbury. The Union forces, led by Gen. George Stoneman, that invaded Salisbury and burned the military prison structure as well as tons of clothing and food that was stored in Salisbury and attempted to destroy the railroad bridge over the Yadkin River. Hoke Chapter President and Assistant District Director Sue Curtis presided, VP Sandra Boyer served as Chaplain, Recording Secretary Anne Saunders served as a Page, Recorder Nancy Sloop hosted the refreshment table and provided music, and Registrar Trudy Hall provided some of the refreshments. Division Registrar Peggy Johnson and Kathy Dalton of the Graham Chapter were guests. Mrs. Johnson gave an informative and enjoyable Registrar workshop. UDC VA Voluntary Service Representative Curtis reminded members of the types of items needed by the hospitalized veterans in Salisbury. Caroline Hancock of the Winston-Salem Chapter was recognized as a veteran of the US Navy. Members from 4 of the 6 District chapters attended. The Memorial Service was held for a member from the Concord Chapter and a NC Division Honorary Division President from Greensboro was remembered. Chapter reports were given and awards presented for Best Attendance, Most New Members, and Best Chapter Report. Elections were held and Chapter announcements were made for upcoming programs. The Hoke Chapter provided door prizes for attendees. Members left with a renewed appreciation of the work of their fellow members in District III for the UDC. Johnston-Pettigrew 95, Raleigh: On August 27 a reception was held to honor one of our Real Daughters, Mrs. Iva Lee Benson Gainey. The reception was held at the Johnston County Heritage Center of Smithfield. It ws attended by various chapter members and Division President Gasson. Johnston - Pettigrew members with Mrs. Iva Lee Benson Gainey. Guilford Chapter 301, Greensboro: Guilford 301 closed out the program year with its annual May luncheon on Tuesday, May 17. The meeting was opened by President Joanne Sharpe who lead the UDC Opening Ritual and Chaplain Elect Joanne Caldwell leading pledges, salutes and songs. Special guests, NC Division President Pat Gasson, and District IV Secretary Tanya Hall were introduced along with Daughters and guests from across the state. Continued on Page 14 Page 13

14 Guilford 301, continued... Dr. Douglas Butler, a Road Scholar with the North Carolina Humanities Council, presented the program, After Appomattox: North Carolina Civil War Monuments. His talk was based on the five years he spent traveling North Carolina photographing the state s 109 post-war monuments and documenting their history. Attendees enjoyed hearing about his travels and gained insights into his research process. Dr. Butler will be feature speaker during Historical Evening at the upcoming North Carolina Division 120th Annual Convention, October 5-8, 2016 in Greensboro. Third Vice President Michele Miller, presented Spring of 1866, the President s Special History Project Vignette, and Pam Hanzaker, Recorder of Military Service Awards Elect, paid tribute to US active military as well as veterans. The meeting was closed by attendees holding hands and singing Blest Be the Tie That Binds. John W. Dunham 374, Wilson: The members of the John W. Dunham Chapter 374 co-hosted a Confederate Memorial Day Service May 2016 at the Confederate Mound in Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson, NC. We served refreshments and presented a short presentation on Rebecca Murphy Winbourne as we placed a wreath on her grave. Ms. Winbourne had been a member of our chapter and the day the NC Division erected and dedicated her tombstone, we were honored to be given the responsibility of the care of her stone. CHAPTER NEWS continued On July 9, we celebrated our 116th anniversary as a chapter. We hosted a meeting held at the Wilson County Library and presented a power point program on Orren Randolph Smith, who designed the flag and Rebecca Murphy Winbourne who sewed thefirst Confederate Flag, the Stars and Bars. We were hon- ored to have NC Division President Pat Gasson in attendance. Several members of the Bethel Heroes 636 as well as members of the Capt. Jesse S. Barnes SCV Camp and the Robert Ricks SCV Camp also attended. Macon 2005 and Thomas Legion 2698, Franklin: Ladies of Macon 2005 and Thomas Legion 2698 recently traveled to Columbus, Mississippi to take a Confederate iron cross home. The beautiful double iron cross believed to be over 100 hundred years old was acquired by Betty Rowland, President of Thomas Legion through a family member from an estate sale in Tennessee. The purchase was made sight unseen with plans to find it a proper home. In spite the age of the cross the embossing is very clear and bears the name of the UDC (S.D. Lee) Chapter that originally placed it at the grave of a Confederate soldier. After some research, Betty found the Stephen D. Lee Chapter 34 still active in Columbus, Mississippi and using the Stephen D. Lee Home and Museum for their meetings. After contacting the curator, Carolyn Kaye, of the museum, things began to move forward. s and phone calls were exchanged between Betty and Elisa Barnes- Shizak, treasurer of S.D. Lee Chapter and plans made for the cross to be returned to Mississippi. The Mississippi ladies graciously received their sisters from North Carolina with a warm welcome, a very informative tour of the museum, a delicious brunch and a time of fellowship. Betty donated the cross to the UDC Chapter with the stipulation that they in turn donate it to the Stephen D. Lee Museum for permanent display. It now holds a place of honor in the UDC room of the museum along with other Civil War memorabilia. Where the cross originally stood nor the name of the soldier whose grave it marked may never be known, but those who now look at it can reflect on its purpose and remember with love and affection those who fought honorably for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. 15 Coltrane - Harris 2076, Concord: The Coltrane-Harris chapter held a dedication ceremony marking with iron crosses the graves of two Confederate veterans, brothers Hiram and William Bost, on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Midland, NC. Also attending were representatives of the church and the local SCV chapter. The Bost brothers were ancestors of our member Donna Cline, and her grandchildren assisted in the unveiling.
