1 THE MESSENGER the weekly newsletter of Christ United Methodist Church FISHERS OF MEN VBS WRAP-UP Christ Church is special for so many reasons! We are blessed, and can be a blessing in so many ways, by God working through this church family. We are thankful that we have been able to have this big, experiential Marketplace Bible School ministry, now for twenty-six years! We continue to know Jesus, follow Jesus, forgive others, and serve others as disciples. We thank all of our incredible children, as well as the multitude of amazing volunteers! We had 213 volunteers this year, including 86 teens and 127 adults. 182 children participated, including 59 preschoolers and 123 K 5 th Graders. Of these 182 children, we had 43 visitors, 30 grandchildren, and 109 members. We especially thank Andi Goree and Paula Hargrove (Chairpersons), Dana Vaughn (Registration), Amy Dulin and Jen Kunka (Preschool Coordinators), Michelle Leonard (Marketplace Crafts), Genette Irlbeck (Marketplace Volunteer Coordinator), Teresa Lowell (Drama Coordinator), Jim Gibson, (Jesus), Mona Flynn and Pam Jackson (Costumes), Sally Muller (Preschool Music), Terri Rotunda (Elementary Music, sub: Cathy West), Andee Morford and Judie Davie Wright (Storytellers), Marcia Collins (Elementary Recreation), and Caroline Camp (Preschool Recreation). A few quotes from the week: When asked in Disciple Group circle What was your favorite thing about Bible School? Eva Grace replied The dramas. I wish they would go on for an hour. I love to make great new friends! It s great learning about Jesus! Love, love VBS! We should give VBS teachers a raise! From Abigail, the six-year-old granddaughter visiting Ann and Bill North: After her first morning at Bible School, Abigail asked her YaYa if the Jesus she met at Bible School was the real Jesus. When asked her what she thought, Abigail s response was yes, she believed he was the real Jesus. Then she looked intently at her grandmother and asked what she thought. I said that certainly Jesus could come to Bible school but I thought this Jesus was a teacher who was there to help us learn about Jesus and his disciples. Later that evening Abigail asked my husband (Pop) the same question. His response was very similar to mine although he added that he thought that if the real Jesus came to Bible school we would all know without a doubt it was him. Later that evening as I tucked Abigail into bed, she said, YaYa, Pop doesn t know for sure if he was the real Jesus but he is the real Jesus to me. So this we know for sure: Jesus and his Disciples were real in the hearts and minds of our children during VBS. Our prayer is that this continues for the rest of their lives, and that is why we do what we do! To God be the glory! With appreciation to all children and workers in VBS Ministry, Andi Goree and Paula Hargrove, VBS Chairpersons Lynn Long and Anne Dooley, Staff VOLUME 57, ISSUE 25/26 WORSHIP SERVICES Sunday, June 29, 2014 Scripture: Matthew 28:16 20 Radical Hospitality Rev. NEW STUDY SUMMER OPTIONS FOR ADULT CLASSES AND INTERESTED ADULTS Emergence Christianity: What the Church Will Be Like Over the Next 500 Years!, led by Rev. Duane Morford (July 13 August 3) The times they are a changing, and that s certainly true of the church. It seems like every 500 years or so there is a radical shift in Christianity that redirects the course of the church for the better part of half a millennium. Many are suggesting that we are on the cusp of just such a shift right now. The new epoch is being called Emergence Christianity. All are welcome as we explore the changing nature and role of the church. The Mormons: A Brief Look at a New American Religion led by Rev. Carl Lindquist (August 10 31) Many of us at some time or another have encountered a young male Mormon missionary trying to interest us of in the Book of Mormon. Perhaps we wondered about 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney and how his Mormon beliefs would affect his being President. For four weeks in August, Rev. Carl Lindquist will focus on where and how Mormonism originated, and how it has developed over the last 180 years since Joseph Smith first went public with his Book of Mormon.

6 Bishop Larry Goodpaster fixed the appointments of Michael F. Bailey, Susan Norman-Vickers, and Louis D. Timberlake to Christ United Methodist Church for the forthcoming year. Louis was commissioned at Annual Conference by Bishop Goodpaster as a provisional elder. In the United Methodist Church, upon completing university and then divinity school and passing the examinations of the Board of Ordained ministry, clergy are commissioned as provisional elders. After three years of satisfactory service, submission of significant academic papers and passing another round of Board of Ordained ministry examinations, provisional elders are ordained as elders in the United Methodist Church. Christ Church offers congratulations to Louis upon his commissioning. REFLECTIONS ON ANNUAL CONFERENCE from Ron Wilson, Lay Member, Western North Carolina Annual Conference Linda and I have just returned from Annual Conference where the theme was Celebrating Generosity. There were wonderful worship services each day and, of course, a number of issues to be addressed in Business Sessions. Sunday morning s worship was, for me, the highlight of the meeting. It was not just a worship service, however, but also a time for the Fixing of Appointments, the historic phrase used for making pastoral appointments official. Bishop Goodpaster delivered the sermon and led the nearly 1,800-member congregation in celebrating the generosity of the Western North Conference in the year There was much to celebrate including growth in giving, growth in mission teams, growth in the number of people participating on those teams and growth in people touched by missions delivered outside the walls of the church. But, the Bishop was distressed at one statistic and which he called us to change: While $30 million was spent by conference congregations on missions delivered outside the walls of the church, this was only 13% of total funds spent. The other 87% was spent within the churches. As he moved to the Fixing of Appointments, Bishop Goodpaster s charge to clergy included the following: We go where we are sent to spread the good news in the community where we are sent, to perform the sacraments, to be servants in the church and in the world, and to lead the congregation. The crux of the Bishop s comments, were that our church s mission is to extend the Kingdom, not just serve our own congregational needs.
