2 From Pastor Andy s Desk Kudos and thanks go to Cynthia Stewart for her diligent work putting together the program in May, It s Happening Here. It is scary to think of the epidemic of drugs here on Long Island from stronger marijuana to heroin to painkillers that will come out soon but make the current strong painkillers look like an aspirin. As I sat there listening to the presentations I kept on reflecting on how things are changing. There was a time when my parents worried only about alcohol at parties, but now I, as a Dad, have to worry about the plethora of drugs available to my kids. Yes, times are changing. Ben Franklin once said that there are only two constants in our lives-death and taxes. Well, Ben was wrong on that one for another constant is change. Our lives change, our families change, and yes the church changes. However, we need to keep something in mind as we witness change whether it is in our lives, our business, the church, or whatever. And that is God, who loves us and watches over us, will simply never change. In other words we can count on God. We can count on God being there when needed, we can count on God to celebrate with us when something great happens, and we can count on God to be with us when something bad happens. Perhaps good old Ben Franklin should have said death, taxes, change, and God. It has been a good year at Old First. Thanks to Katie our youth program is up and flourishing like it never has before. Ken, Diane, and the choirs are doing a great job singing God s praises. Our office staff of Cherie and Ellen are keeping the office running well, and Bob and Jessica are doing a great job keeping the building looking great. I hope that you all have great summers. See you on the beach. August 4 Priscilla Jahier 25 Dorothy & Mark Mandrakos 11 Mary Samuels 19 Ashley Andresen 25 Barbara Macchiaroli 30 Christian Mandrakos Special Days to Celebrate Continued May you be showered with all God s best blessings today and always. If you haven t already submitted the dates for your birthday and anniversary, please let the church office know as soon as possible so we can list them in the Weathervane for the appropriate months. Please note that since there is no Weathervane for the months of January, July, and August, these special days will be listed in the previous months issues. Blessings, Andy 2 19

Quilting Circle 4 Leader: Asenath Fuchs ( ) Thursday Mornings at 9:30am in Room 101 After standing silently in the corner of the Fiske Room for many years, our beautiful cherry tall case clock is again marking time ringing a bell on the quarter hours and gonging on the full hour. The clock has a cherry case and was probably made in Connecticut in about As is typical of many American clocks, the works have wood gears, are European, and probably date to the late eighteenth century. The back panel of the works has a hole in its top center, suggesting that it was originally intended to hang on the wall. The clock strikes on the quarter hour and gongs on the full hour. The mechanism is an eight day movement and is driven by three weights. The restoration of the clock was done by Chris Hansen of Centerport. Chris is a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and has for many years collected and restored clocks. He has been active in both the Huntington and Greenlawn/Centerport historical societies. Chris also serves on the Huntington Landmarks Preservation Commission. Chris has long admired our tall case clock and volunteered this winter to restore it to working condition. The clock was a gift to Old First about forty years ago by Virginia Potter Jacobsen and Vlademar F. Jacobsen in memory of Virginia s parents, Ruth Alden and James S. Potter. Mrs. Jacobsen s parents were members of Old First for many years. Her mother was a soprano soloist in the choir and her father was also an active member of the choir. The congregation remembers with sincere thanks, the gift of this beautiful clock by Val and Ginna Jacobsen and wishes to thank Chris Hansen for generously volunteering to put it back into working condition. 9 Hygiene Kits...fathers make known to children your faithfulness. ~~~ (Isaiah 38:19) Origins of Father s Day The campaign to celebrate the nation s fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm perhaps because, as one florist explained, fathers haven t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation s first statewide Father s Day on July 19, Slowly, the holiday spread. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Father s Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they scoffed at the holiday s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and giftgiving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products often paid for by the father himself. To read more Father! to God himself we cannot give a holier name. ~William Wordsworth ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dad, you re someone to look up to no matter how tall I ve grown. ~Author Unknown This year Old First responded very generously to the Church World Service Gift of the Heart kit drive. Our members donated material for 116 hygiene kits, each consisting of a comb, toothbrush, nail clipper, bar of soap, and several band aids. Presbyterian Women added a hand towel and a washcloth to each kit, packed them all up and delivered them for shipment in April. We found about 50 kits that had been donated from a previous Confirmation Class, and want to thank them for their hard work. In addition many generous monetary donations helped us buy supplemental items and to defray Church World Service s shipping costs. These kits will be used to help people in our own country and around the world where there have been disasters and people are in need. According to Church World Service in 2013 there were about 80,000 kits distributed last year alone! Check the PW bulletin board for detailed information. Thank you, Presbyterian Women and all members of Old First Church! Holly Baptista Thank You Thank you to all who visited me in the hospital and rehab facility. Thanks, too for all the cards, food and company while I was mending. It meant so much to me and really buoyed my spirits. Edie Jahier 12 9
