3 News & Views From Our Pastor ALONG THE JOURNEY In January, the GJ UMC Clergy were asked to participate on a panel to answer questions from our Grand Valley - wide youth group. Stump the Pastor was fun, informative, and encouraging for both the students who asked insightful questions and for the pastors who got to share their faith, knowledge, and collective wisdom. Our youth are curious to know about character and nature of God just as many adults are. Lent is a great time in the life of the church to explore these questions. Here are some options you could take on this Lent. As you make your choices, may God bless you with spiritual and personal growth and understanding as you keep Lent this year. For the season of Lent, we will wonder together about God s nature and character in an All-Church Study of Rob Fuquay s book, The God We Can Know. The seven chapter series will explore the I Am sayings of Jesus found in John s gospel. The Sunday sermons will touch on these themes and there will be a Wednesday night study from Feb. 25-March 25, where we ll get to go deeper with the book and DVD, as well as during the adult co-ed Sunday study between worship. We will provide a simple meal on Wednesday nights starting with Ash Wednesday, February 18 th through the completion of our Wed. study on March 25 th. Books will be available for purchase beginning Sunday, February 8 th at the M.I.X Table in the Fellowship Hall. Look for more details in this month s Reporter and on our website. Maybe your Lenten journey needs to be more personal, however, than Bible study alone. Starting on Ash Wednesday, February 18th, Nanette Graham will lead a group through a 40-day focus on health and well-being with the Daniel Plan. The Daniel Plan includes a workbook, group discussion and support to make healthier choices everyday. Nanette can help you order class materials (see the article in this month s Reporter). Perhaps you ve heard the good news that our youth are participating in a Grand Valley wide youth ministry experience. United Methodist students all around the Grand Valley are living examples of cooperation and community. Among their first collaborative events, our students are doing a fundraiser to help defray travel expenses to Youth 2015 in Orlando, Florida June 24-28, Youth 2015 is for students in grades This national gathering of youth only takes place once every four years. The fundraiser will take place on Friday, February 13 th from 6:30 8:30pm here at Redlands UMC. It will include a spaghetti dinner, a live auction, talent from our youth and lots of fun and laughter. Tickets are available through Sunday, February 8 th from any student. Tickets can be purchased for $15/person or $20/couple (family). Childcare will be available on request at a small fee, so call the church office ahead of time to reserve space In our pattern of monthly mission participation with Homeward Bound, we will need volunteers for our participation in the community meal on Tuesday, February 17 th. The host team for this month will be Missions along with UMW and In Stitches/Pinterest. But everyone can help in some way with food or with time. See you in February! Your Servant in Christ, Pastor Kerry 3

4 In & About Our Church NEW LEADERS, NEW DIRECTIONS During the Church Conference meeting on Saturday, January 11 th, members of Redlands UMC voted to change our form of governance from the committee and church council structure we have known in the past. There is now a single board of 12 individuals elected by the congregation who will accomplish the necessary work required in the current Book of Discipline and who will also focus on vision, mission and purpose for the future of Redlands UMC. The team is beginning to form and is setting goals for its first six months. The team is comprised of these twelve individuals, plus our Lay Leader. Claudine Bogart, Chair Ernie Young, Co-Chair Donna Gardner, Treasurer Julianne Yake, Secretary Bill Emert Jeff Geest Tim Graus Rick Howe Mike McCormick Dick Pippenger Marj Richardson Chuck Simcox Candy Graus, Lay Leader The pastor meets with and works with this team ex officio, that is with voice and without vote. The Leadership Team will meet monthly and it is likely that other groups and teams will meet less formally to accomplish ongoing tasks. The frequency of other meetings will be determined by the specific tasks or needs or desired outcomes. Members and friends of Redlands are invited to volunteer in areas of interest to them whether that s in education, music, facilities, mission, outreach or other ministry needs. Anyone and everyone can develop new ideas as well. 4 Members and friends of Redlands are invited to do all in their power to support and encourage our new leaders. Pray for them. Volunteer ideas and be avenues of good communication. Be prepared to help out to make good ideas become reality. Let s choose to move forward toward vitality, strength, and growth in mission and discipleship.

9 RUMC IN-STITCHES/PINTEREST Seventeen ladies of all ages participated in the January In-Stitches/Pinterest session. It was an excellent turnout and a morning of productivity: While some of the gals completed their Pinterest craft, Linda Reinert worked on and showed us how to do helmet hats for the our military; this is a quick knitting project that is very useful and easy to make. Still others of us sorted through all the quilt material, made a donation to Goodwill and the following is what we have available for other uses. 2 sets of fabric to do a flannel baby quilt and a really cute gingham baby quilt 2 sets of fabric to do a man s quilt and a regular quilt - good for donating to the new cancer center at Community Hospital one completed baby quilt, boy or girl If you are interested in using the fabric we have, just contact Nancy Kowal ( ) or myself, Kathy Hillman ( ), as we know which box the fabric is in. We Give Together If you have a quilting idea for our February class (or future classes), please let me know. If you have an idea for a Pinterest project for next month please contact Nan McNees at ngm121@gmail.com (she is presently in Minn. visiting with her ill Father - your prayers of support would be greatly appreciated). If you want to learn how to make the military helmet hats, please contact me and I will put you in touch with Linda. Also, please share any ideas you have for fun things to do or work on this year during the RUMC In Stitches & Pinterest sessions - your input is valuable... Kathy Hillman The Joy of Unselfish Giving Time is not measured by the years that you live, But by the deeds that you do and the joy that you give-- And each day as it comes, brings a chance to each one, To love to the fullest, leaving nothing undone. That would brighten the life or lighten the load, Of some weary traveler lost on Life's Road --- So what does it matter Last year quilt blankets were made for the men how long we may live, from the Emergency Shelter Program... which they If as long as we live so appreciated. This year one of our charities will be we unselfishly give. to make lap quilts for cancer patients while we continue to make baby quilts for our congregation. ---Helen Steiner Rice 9

10 In & About Our Church NEW SMALL GROUP FOR LENT FOCUSES ON HEALTH Nanette Graham will facilitate a new small group experience for the season of Lent. The group will focus on 40 days of a healthier lifestyle with The Daniel Plan. It invites participants to look at the key essentials that can change your life, one choice at a time. The concepts behind this plan will encourage each person to deepen their relationship with God and develop a community of supportive friends who will encourage each other to make healthier choices every day. LENT 2015 The 40-days of Lent are upon us again. As you consider your options for spiritual growth and personal reflection in these next 6 weeks, I hope you will give some thought to the experiences and small groups we will offer. This new group will begin meeting on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18) with an informal information meeting and will follow up every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Sign up at the M.I.X. table. Class participants will watch a DVD, discuss key concepts together, and personally follow the plan through a workbook ($13.99) and a study guide ($8.29). There s an optional journal ($8.99) for those who work best introspectively. Orders for class materials can be coordinated through Nanette: Orders should be placed by Wednesday, February 11 th. Scholarships are available to help defray material expenses. The Daniel Plan also has a website. Go to to discover the benefits of the Plan for yourself before the class begins or call Nanette Graham with any questions you might have. Do something healthy this Lent. 10 Our Lenten Church-wide Study will help us learn more about God s nature, identity and purpose through Jesus. Rev. Rob Fuquay, Senior Pastor at St. Luke s UMC in Indianapolis, has written a book, The God We Can Know: Exploring the I Am Statements of Jesus, in which he helps us access vivid images Jesus used to capture our imagination and reveal something important for our faith experience. Our All-Church Study will take place on Wednesday evenings during Lent from February 25 th through March 25 the week before Holy Week. We will gather for a simple meal at 5:15 p.m., with the study beginning at 6:00 p.m. For those who want to continue with The Daniel Plan, facilitated by Nanette Graham, that group will begin at 7:00 p.m. (beginning Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18), so there s no time conflict. For those who are not available mid-week, the All-Church Study will be offered on Sunday mornings beginning February 22 during the education hour between worship services. Books for the study ($10) will be available at the M.I.X Table starting Sunday, February 8 th.
