3 A Message from the President 3 Message from the President There is something invigorating and life-giving when one feels the touch of another person s hand. Pediatrics has come to understand the uniqueness of a newborn infant being touched. Years ago, when I first became a parent, no one except the mother was permitted to touch the baby. Outsiders, including the father, were not allowed to be in the room when the newborn child was present. Two years ago, when our last grandson was born, all family members were invited into the room in order to touch and hold the child. Modern medicine now recognizes there is something special when one is receiving the physical touch of love. Reading the four gospels will quickly alert one to the frequency of Jesus touching people physically. Jesus touched the untouchable lepers (Luke 5:13). Jesus touched the terrified disciples (Matt 17:6). Repeatedly, Jesus is reported as touching the sick who were hemorrhaging, blind, crippled, deaf, and dumb. The touch of Jesus interrupted funeral marches and comforted the grieving and gave life to the deceased (Luke 7:14). Jesus also touched the children who were brought to him (Luke 18:15). Every touch received has a significant meaning to the recipient. This year s Annual Report shares the stories of individual s touched by the Master. Oakland City University, a Christian faith-based community, has been touching people in the name of Christ since Many lives have been transformed through the ministry and mission of this wonderful university. 4 Hannah Salo '17 Stand Up for God This summer I accepted an opportunity to travel with the Academy of Arts Ministries, which has been based in South Carolina since The organization s mission is to bring the Bible to life through drama (for more information, visit them at I served with a missions team that traveled through New York, Pennsylvania, the Carolinas and everywhere in between. We challenged east coast churches to stand up for Christ with the play Dare to Stand. You have to stand up for your God. Do not become a nominal Christian. The Lord made us to stand out from the world. We are called to be the salt of the earth. God taught me these lessons all summer long. As believers, we battle every day and must continue the good fight to win the war. We cannot grow numb to the fact that people are dying and not going to heaven. This truth is not easily said, but we need to face the facts. We must recommit to a sense of urgency in touching others for Christ. My name is Hannah Salo and I am a senior at Oakland City University. I am majoring in Social Sciences with a concentration in History and with a minor in Laity Ministry. I am involved in Good News Players, president of the drama club, and serve as a work study in the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations. Our missions team received two weeks of training at the beginning of June before traveling seven weeks in a twelve passenger van with a trailer of luggage in tow. This play showcased the life of Joshua and Caleb, and David and Amy Carmichael. These individuals took a stand for what they believed. Often, standing up for their beliefs resulted in facing death for following God. As Christians, we can become comfortable in our faith, preferring a life of ease rather than facing conflict or sacrifice. We expect someone else to come along and do the heavy lifting because we cannot see the urgency of reaching people. However, you have something in common with these special missionaries, something very important. You are human; you are not perfect. God does not look for perfection because none of us would qualify. These men and women of faith were just people like you and me. They were not perfect, but God used their lives to touch others in a mighty way. Christians in the church today must grasp this principle because following Jesus is only going to become harder. A review of history shows numerous examples of horrific human suffering, e.g. Nazi Germany, slavery. If you had lived during these times, would you have put your life on the line to help the Jews or the slaves? It is easy to think the decision would be simple, but would you really choose the correct side? How do you know? What about today when issues go against your beliefs? If you would have stood for the Jews and the slaves, why will you not take a stand now? If we, as the church, cannot take a stand now, then how will we react when our core beliefs are challenged further? When persecution comes? God started bringing me to that point this summer. He has made touching people with His love so much more important to me. My passion is talking with others about God. I know that I must take action even when it leaves me with nothing left. I cannot sit idly by and rust away with my excuses. In the fall of 2017, I will start my Master s in Sacred Dramatic Production with the Academy of Arts Ministries so I will be better prepared to touch people in the best way I know how: Drama.

7 Juan Carlos Calderon 7 Juan Carlos Calderon '10 Growing Diversity Through Christ Oakland City University is proud to welcome Juan Carlos Calderon as an International/Multicultural Enrollment Counselor in the Office of Admissions. In 2008, Juan transferred to OCU from Western Texas College. His hometown is Caracas, Venezuela, where his parents and older brother still reside. Juan graduated from Oakland City University in 2010 with a Bachelor s degree in Business Administration: Sports Administration. During his time on campus, he was active in a number areas including the OCU baseball team. The game of baseball has been an integral part of his life while coaching at various levels. In 2013, Juan graduated with a Master s degree in Leadership in Higher Education from Iowa State University. Upon graduation, he accepted an assistant baseball coaching and recruiting position at the College of Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He returned to Iowa after one year in North Carolina and accepted an assistant baseball coaching position at Indiana Hills Community College. Currently, Juan is finishing a Master s degree in Teaching: Spanish at Northern Arizona University. Oakland City University is excited about resourcing Juan s expertise to extend the University s touch. He is recruiting students from outside the United States, and also collaborating with the local Latino community in southern Indiana. He is presently working with various schools, churches, and businesses to establish free courses for adults on English as a Second Language (ESL). This strategic initiative uniquely correlates with OCU s mission while meeting needs within a growing segment of nearby communities. Juan believes he will be successful with recruiting international students and increasing diversity at Oakland City University. 8 Drew and Jessica Shockley '06 Serving with Loyalty and Kindness Drew and Jessica Shockley have been blessed with God s favor throughout life. Drew and Jessica graduated from Oakland City University in May of OCU has been a big part of their story. They hope sharing about God s favor will allow others to realize their dreams can be accomplished through Oakland City University. Drew is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee and transferred to OCU from East Tennessee State University in the fall of Jessica is from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and has deep family ties to Oakland City University. Her great uncle, Dr. Ken Kennedy, served as General Baptist Executive Director and the 1st GB missionary to the Philippines. Her cousins Denver Kennedy and Elaine Kennedy- Trafton (wife of the late Coach Charlie Trafton) are active OCU alumni. Drew and Jessica met on campus in the fall of Drew recalls that the couple had a computer class together, and he thought that he had taken the same class at East Tennessee. However, rather than talking with the Provost, he decided to remain in the class simply to be close to Jessica. A friendship developed, which ultimately led to their dating and another match made at OCU. Drew s family did not go to church on a consistent basis. His best friend, Zack McGill, was a music minister and talked Drew into attending church. At the age of 16, Drew realized that he had never asked Christ in his life. Drew gave his life to Christ and from that point forward God always shielded him from trouble. It was through this friendship with Zack that Drew found Oakland City University. Drew says, When Zack first told me about Oakland City University, I thought he was going to college in California. I had never really been out of East Tennessee so I was pretty jealous. Turns out it was Oakland City, Indiana. Drew s first visit to Indiana came in January of Before then, he had never seen roads so straight or land so flat and did not know if OCU was the right place for him. However, later that summer Drew met Dr. James Murray at a GB Church in Missouri. Dr. Murray, as he did so many times with prospective students, persuaded Drew to attend OCU and be a part of Earthlight. Drew was a part of Earthlight from 2003 through During this time, he traveled and led worship in many GB churches across the Midwest. Drew also played on the OCU golf team from 2004 through 2006 serving as Team Captain in each of those years. Jessica was also involved in athletics and played on the women s soccer, tennis, and golf teams. The Shockleys married in July of 2005 and served as Resident Directors of Off-Campus housing in 2005 and later became the first Resident Directors of Cox Hall from Once married, the couple needed health insurance and went to the Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield office in Evansville. During their initial meeting, the agent asked them, What are you planning to do after college? Drew jokingly replied I was hoping to have a career in the health insurance industry. Little did he know that was exactly what God had in store. Drew started working for Anthem almost immediately in August of 2005, and after gaining valuable experence, he left to start Crosspointe Insurance Advisors in March of Crosspointe currently has 35 team members and plans to hire another 40 by the end of the year. On an annual basis, Crosspointe helps more than 10,000 clients shop and enroll in health plans and Medicare coverage across the United States. Crosspointe has embraced the biblical foundation to be loyal and kind to its clients, team members, and everyone who interacts with the business. Evidenced by daily interactions, often times people will say: there is something different about you. This difference has brought about God s favor and led the company to a solid reputation in the health insurance industry. Drew and Jessica believe it is vitally important to be life-long advocates for Oakland City University. They support the University because of its mission and vision to send forth compassionate, servant leaders in the community. As alumni, donors, and friends of the University, the Shockleys feel called to inspire and provide opportunities for the next generation. Crosspointe Insurance Advisors is presently working with OCU Career Services to fill twenty part-time positions. The company is providing several OCU students with real-life work experiences, which may lead into various business professions. Drew affirmed, Fortunately, God had a plan for my life that led me into the insurance industry and opening a business. Perhaps, a small way that we can repay our favor is to provide similar opportunities for others.

Roger Willis ('70), 1885 Legacy Society member, recently included Oakland City University in his estate planning. Roger is the Gallery Director at Oakland City University. Prior to his current position, Willis taught art in the public schools for forty-three years, wrote numerous grants as a grant writer and worked as an Adjunct Instructor at OCU. He developed a multi-cultural artist program that included bringing in artists from different countries including China, Japan, and Russia, along with focusing on Native American artists. Willis has received many awards throughout the years. In 2002, he received the Golden Apple Award from Channel 10 in Terre Haute as the most outstanding teacher in Martin County. He was a 2012 recipient of the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana artist s award for Pike County. Since his retirement from public school teaching, Roger has started a new career as owner and designer for two floral and gift shops in Petersburg, Indiana. Roger has included Oakland City University in his will because he desires to further the growth of visual arts at the university. He stated OCU believed in me as a young student and made it possible to realize the calling upon my life. The educational foundation I received at OCU opened doors of education, leadership, travel and ministry. I want to make it possible for future students to fulfill their calling. OCU Awarded $3 Million Matching Grant Through the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest Indiana, Oakland City University received a $3 million matching grant for a multi-use building creating student housing, alumni lodge, and retail area for business and commerce. OCU Choir Performs at Gaither Homecoming Under the direction of Ms. Cynthia Retana, the OCU Choir performed at the Gaither Christmas Homecoming concert in French Lick, Indiana. OCU Ranks as a Best College For the third year, Oakland City University was ranked as the #33 Best Regional Liberal Arts College in the Midwest by U.S. News and World Report. The New Mighty Oaks Mascot The Student Government Association unveiled the institution s new mascot.

Celebrating OCU Donors We Love Our Donors Day was held on campus as students wrote thank you cards to University prayer and philanthropic supporters. Check Out the New Oak.edu In partnership with Gray Loon Marketing Group, OCU launched a digitally responsive website in late August. Among many new features, is a Career Services section where students and companies can connect on future career opportunities.

14 Prison Ministry Oakland City University implemented the prison ministry program to eight correctional facilities in the Southern Region of Indiana in August In collaboration with the Indiana Department of Corrections, OCU offers basic education services to offenders who do not have a high school diploma or are illiterate. These men and women are equipped with the necessary skills to gain employment upon release. Oakland City University programs, servicing over 1,400 students, give offenders the vocational education necessary to find gainful employment. Institutional research conducted by two former OCU doctoral students shows that the recidivism rate among the offenders who had a college education was 31.0%, but the recidivism rate increased to 55.9% among the offenders who had an education below high school. Most importantly, as we educate prisoners, we do so in the love of Christ. Enter to Learn Go Forth to Serve applies to more than the OCU main campus. Every OCU student carries the image of God, made in His likeness, and touched by Christ s hand. As Jesus said, when we serve the least of our brothers, including those in prison, we have served Him. 15 Regional Cities 15 Regional Cities Oakland City University is embarking on the next phase of campus expansion and revitalization. As part of The Regional Cities Initiative, this exciting project will include a multi-faceted approach to living and learning. Included in the project are a new student housing complex, an alumni lodge, and retail space for businesses. The student housing complex will be located on.65 acres, encompassing 30,000 square feet of living space, including approximately 100 new beds for residential students, with laundry facilities on each floor. These four-person suites will include: two bedrooms, individual closets, shared living space, and secure entry and exit of each suite. These suite-style living arrangements will foster community and be augmented by large common areas for study groups and social activities. This new facility will replace aging campus housing, enticing students to remain on campus for activities and events. Additionally, a new alumni lodge will be constructed with approximately 13,000 square feet. This facility will be used to foster the involvement of alumni on campus and help sustain the relationships established during the university experience. Included in the alumni lodge will be a state-of-theart conference center with a hospitality suite and six overnight lodging rooms available for booking at cost-saving rates. These rooms will be for shortterm, overnight guests of the University and local business vendors and suppliers. This area will also serve as a local learning space for business students on campus to acquire the practical experiences of running a business. One goal of this project is to generate community revitalization and transformation. This will be accomplished by creating nearly 6,400 square feet of retail space for local business. Intentionally designed, students will have the opportunity to partner with business owners, through internships and co-op courses, to gain firsthand knowledge of business operations and assist with development of business plans. Oakland City University s touch reaches into several partnerships. The City of Oakland City, Oakland City University, and the Regional Cities Initiative have come together to create an exciting and vibrant community of students and municipal activity. This project includes a corridor linking the newly developed area to the campus of Oakland City University. The estimated costs of the project is somewhere between $12 to $15 million dollars. The Regional Cities Initiative offered by the State of Indiana seeded 20% of the total costs of the project. As part of the funding, local, state, and governmental agencies are expected to fund an additional 20% leaving the University to contribute 60% toward the construction process. 22 Message from the Chairman of the Board The Board officers have changed and diversified to better develop critical skills. Each Trustee has a unique background and skill set, providing a balance of pastoral, management, and entrepreneurial skills. The Board is responsible for having an independent financial audit conducted annually. During the last several years Oakland City University has received unqualified opinions, which is the best opinion that can be issued by an independent auditor. OCU has a strong balance sheet and improving cash flows. Oakland City University has positioned itself to be a faith-based institution where students are free to express their Christian faith. OCU touches the Head, the Heart, and Hands of students as they are transformed into faith-based leaders. To fulfill the University s mission the Board of Trustees has accepted the challenge to provide itself and the Administration with clear vision and direction. OCU has an Endowment Fund and a separate Scholarship Fund. The Board has developed investing guidelines and has employed an independent financial advisor to manage both funds. The financial advisor provides information quarterly to two Trustees and meets annually with the full Board of Trustees. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to say thank you for your sacrificial gifts which provide a Christian learning environment enhancing positive leadership.
