APTITUDE FOR SERVICE ANNUAL REPORT 2015

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT TRAINING LEADERS WITH AN APTITUDE FOR SERVICE These are exciting times to be connected with Oakland City University. Five years ago, the University s Board of Trustees established a new mission and vision statement laying the foundation for an updated strategic plan. Many of the critical areas of improvement were accomplished because of your stewardship. From the vantage point of 2015 we have already seen many of the dreams of five years ago come to fruition. Whether it be, the Deaconess Health Clinic or the Holy Grounds coffee shop, Oakland City University has improved the quality of life for our students on campus. With the development of online degree programs and the prison ministry, Oakland City University has expanded its offerings in traditional and non-traditional formats. By assisting with a new home build through Gibson County Habitat for Humanity and annually caring for children at Faith Home orphanage in Honduras, OCU students can be found faithful in sharing God s love nationally and internationally. None of these past accomplishments would have been possible without the prayers and generous gifts of you, our friends and supporters. Likewise, the University s future plans and dreams can only happen because you see the vision and make a conscious decision to invest in our students. At our annual Oak Leaf Society banquet in May, I introduced the question: Is the task of Oakland City University to train students who have the capability to lead or is our goal to train leaders with an aptitude for service? I believe the answer is the latter. Oakland City University s mission is to educate leaders who Go Forth To Serve throughout the world. Oakland City University is alive and vibrant because we stand with our 9,000 alumni and thousands of friends like you who believe in our mission. Now, our focus becomes revisiting the strategic plan and laying a fresh vision that will guide us into the year We invite you to join us in this incredible opportunity to train the next generation of Christian leaders. Your participation in the ongoing ministry of OCU will be critical to our continued success. May the Lord richly bless you and keep you. Grace and Peace, Ray G. Barber, D.Min. 85, 88 President MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT ANNUAL REPORT

JENNIFER BROWN, WORSHIP ARTS MAJOR TRAINING FOR SERVICE My name is Jennifer Nicole Brown and I am 20 years old. I grew up right outside of St. Louis, Missouri with my mom (Sandi), dad (Steve), and sister (Brittany). I was raised knowing about God and His amazing love. I am so thankful for my parents and all that they have done for me and my walk with Christ. During my adolescence, our family attended a General Baptist church just a few miles from home. I found numerous ministry opportunities right at my fingertips. I was able to volunteer at Camp Allen, the National Youth Conference, and the Missions & Ministry Summit. Through serving at these events, God revealed to me a place to continue my education Oakland City University. Camp Allen is really the place where I started my relationship with Christ and accepted the calling into ministry. I had attended Camp Allen as a regular camper every summer since the age of 8, but when I was 15 (a freshman in high school) began serving at Camp Allen as a CIT (Counselor In Training). It was a blessing to make an impact in the lives of these children and teach them about Christ. Those summers were some of the best and most important times of my life. Before starting high school, I learned about the National Youth Conference (NYC) from my friends at camp. At NYC I grew in my faith and became friends with some great leaders within the General Baptist denomination such as: Jeff Roth, Brandon Petty, Todd Luke, and Tyler Feller. These Godly men were proud of me and saw great potential in my abilities. I wanted to go further in serving and learning about ministry. I applied and became an intern at the annual Missions and Ministries Summit. During this event, I felt God calling me to help plant a church in the future! Through NYC and Camp Allen I learned about Oakland City University. At first, I questioned whether to attend a small Christian university. I thought God was sending me to a large state university. But, as always God had a different plan in mind! While attending a promotional night for OCU at Camp Allen, God placed on my heart to enroll at OCU and prepare for ministry. Many people thought that I was crazy but I never looked at another school. I applied to Oakland City University and trusted that God would take care of the rest. And He did! God has opened so many doors and provided funding for my education. I am extremely grateful for these scholarship monies including the two endowment scholarships that make God s plan for my life possible. Currently, I am a Worship Arts major studying to become a worship pastor. Though it is really hard being almost four hours away from home, I absolutely love attending OCU. I am very involved on campus, not only with my school work, but in a number of different capacities including: Student Ambassadors, Student Government, Drama Club, Choir, my work study position, and the Music department. Being connected on campus is very important to me. I love knowing that I am helping make Oakland City University an amazing school. Even though I love where God has placed me now; I look forward to where He takes me after school. I believe the Lord is calling me to Portland, Tennessee after graduation. His plan is for me to become part of Generation Church where I can continue to learn and grow more in ministry. I know that I can rely on my Generation family to help lead me in the right path. I know God has great plans for me and I cannot wait to experience all that He has in store! TRAINING FOR SERVICE ANNUAL REPORT 2015

ALEC HENSLEY, G.B. PASTOR AND CHIEF OF POLICE SERVICE IN ACTION When I was in the 4th grade, my teacher, Mrs. Siewert, had a parent/ teacher conference with my mother. After the conference we were standing outside of the room, and Mrs. Siewert asked me a few questions. Mrs. Siewert: Alec, what do you want to do when you grow up? Alec: Mrs. Siewert, I want to be a farmer like my daddy. Mrs. Siewert: Well, what do want to be if you can t be a farmer? Alec: If I can t be a farmer, I want to be a police officer. Mrs. Siewert: What do you want to be if you can t be a police officer? Alec: If I can t be a farmer or a police officer, then I want to be a preacher. Who would have thought that I would experience all of this? Even though my father would stop farming before I grew up, I did experience the farming life and was able to achieve the Kentucky State Farmers Degree for the Future Farmers of America. Every year in February during FFA Week, my name is in the local paper for that achievement. It is always close by my father s name, who was the second person in Henderson County history to achieve the American Famers Degree. Soon after I turned 21, I met my wife Julie through a mutual friend. I will never forget the first time I saw her. I first saw her eyes, and in my mind I said, I am going to marry the girl. She was the most genuine Christian that I have ever met. She loved the LORD, and her life showed it. Our first date was on March 16, 1989, and I picked her up at 6:30p.m. Two years later on March 16, 1991, at 6:30p.m. we said, I do. We have been married 24 wonderful years and have two great children, Jessica and Logan. A few months after dating Julie, I applied to be a reserve police officer. After being hired for that position and being trained, I found that I wanted to continue in that career. In October of 1992, Julie and I chaperoned some of the church youth to Oakland City College for their annual Fall Frenzy. It was there that I met Chief of Police Thomas Tom Rowe. He was in the process of hiring an officer. Through that process I was hired by the Oakland City Police Department and am now the Chief of Police as well as an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Certified Law Enforcement Instructor with special certifications in firearms, physical tactics and emergency vehicle operations. In January of 1997, while in the middle of my law enforcement career I accepted the call into the ministry. I was licensed through the Union Association as a minister in April of 1998 and was ordained through the Union Association with my brother Chad in November of I have always known that I was called; however, I cannot pinpoint why I delayed in accepting it. Whatever the reason, I have been blessed to pastor some great churches: Clarks Chapel General Baptist Church, Mt. Gilead General Baptist Church, Ayrshire Valley General Baptist Church, and presently Oakland City First General Baptist Church. Yes, as you would notice in my story, I am presently the Chief of Police with the Oakland City Police Department and Pastor of Oakland City First General Baptist Church. With that being said, I am also the Chief of Security at Oakland City University and am an adjunct instructor for the Criminal Justice Program at OCU. I have also achieved two associate degrees and one bachelor degree from Oakland City University. OCU is a huge part of my family s life. My wife, Julie, is presently working at OCU, my Daughter Jessica is presently attending OCU, and my son recently accepted his calling into the ministry and is presently submitting a request to complete the LAMP program. He also plans on attending OCU after he graduates high school so he can complete his theological degree in religious studies. In the 47 years of my life, all of these milestones were only made possible because of the way God transformed me. He has used my whole family to raise me, shape me and encourage me. He used the difficult situations and circumstances that I have encountered throughout life to be a witness for Him and draw me closer to Him. And He used Oakland City College now Oakland City University as the finishing touches needed to successfully prepare me for the ministry now and in the future. So, I am grateful for my God, my family and my alma mater, (Oakland City University). SERVICE IN ACTION ANNUAL REPORT 2015

MS. SAMANTHA GOLDSMITH BRINGING LIGHT THROUGH SERVICE Ms. Samantha Goldsmith s classroom is a shining example of a teacher with an aptitude for service. Ms. Goldsmith is an instructor at the Hope Junior-Senior High School at the Madison Juvenile Correctional Facility. She was recently awarded the Lighting the Fire: Teacher of the Year award sponsored by the Center for Educational Excellence in Alternative Settings. The Light the Fire award is a nationwide competition to recognize the efforts of educational professionals working in youth correctional facilities. Ms. Goldsmith said she knew she wanted to work at a youth correctional facility from the day she picked her career path. I knew from the minute I decided to become a teacher, she said. Helping to make a difference in the lives of girls who may be experiencing emotional or behavioral issues was something that came from a personal place. From her own life experiences, there were times growing up where a positive influence made a difference. I wanted to help students become something better, she stated. Ms. Goldsmith also takes comfort in knowing that she is part of a team making a difference. I just know I m where I m supposed to be, and my girls need me. Ms. Samantha Goldsmith THE LIGHTING THE FIRE AWARD IS A NATIONWIDE COMPETITION TO RECOGNIZE OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL PROFESSIONALS WORKING IN YOUTH CORRECTION SETTINGS AND IS GIVEN TO VISIONARY EDUCATORS THAT HAVE SHOWN THEIR INVESTMENT IN STUDENTS, PERSEVERE IN A CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT, COMMUNICATE HIGH EXPECTATIONS AND COMMITMENT TO THE EDUCATION COMMUNITY. 9 OCU PRISON MINISTRY SERVICE IN EDUCATION In collaboration with the Department of Corrections, OCU offers educational programs in ten southern Indiana correctional facilities. Our programs offer basic education services to offenders who do not have a high school diploma or are illiterate. These men and women are equipped with the necessary skills to gain employment upon release. One of the greatest factors in high recidivism rates is the lack of marketable job skills. Oakland City University programs, servicing over 1,400 students, gives offenders the vocational education necessary to find gainful employment. Most importantly, as we educate prisoners, we do so in the love of Christ, understanding that only the Gospel can truly change human hearts. People behind bars are humans who have made bad decisions and those bad decisions have consequences. However, no one is beyond the redemptive grace of Jesus Christ. As part of our mission, we believe it is vitally important that our institution brings the message of God s love to Indiana prisoners. Not just to provide a different way of living but to help people find the true meaning and purpose of life. Some have inquired about the state of Indiana being involved with a private, Christian institution of higher learning. Oakland City University has consistently received high marks and good results from our work with inmates. In fact, most of OCU correctional facilities received an A+ final grade. OCU s grades were considerably higher than other servicing institutions this past year. There are countless stories of prisoners who have gone through Oakland City University s programs and released to lead productive lives. Enter to Learn Go Forth to Serve applies to more than the OCU main campus. Every OCU student carries the image of God, made in His likeness, and as Jesus said, we are to be with them in prison. Because when we have served the least of our brothers we have served Him. FOR I WAS HUNGRY AND YOU GAVE ME FOOD, I WAS THIRSTY AND YOU GAVE ME DRINK, I WAS A STRANGER AND YOU WELCOMED ME, I WAS NAKED AND YOU CLOTHED ME, I WAS SICK AND YOU VISITED ME, I WAS IN PRISON AND YOU CAME TO ME TRULY, I SAY TO YOU, AS YOU DID IT TO ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE MY BROTHERS, YOU DID IT TO ME. -MATTHEW 25:35-40 SERVICE IN EDUCATION ANNUAL REPORT

DR. R.E. SIMMS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP A TRIBUTE TO SERVICE Dr. R.E. Simms was a professor, Chair of Theology, and Dean of Students of Oakland City College in the 1920s and 1930s. The Dr. R.E. Simms will be awarded to needy, full-time students to assist them in obtaining a four-year degree at Oakland City University where otherwise they might not be financially able to do so. In 1922, R.E. Simms, Superintendent of the Onaway Michigan School District, received an invitation from OCC President Dr. Prentice Dearing to join the faculty at Oakland City College. The Depression proved to be a trying time for students and for OCC itself as student enrollment dwindled. Some students had to barter farm produce, pork, or poultry to cover their tuition. Thus, Dr. R.E. Simms lived during a time when many students struggled with finances. In addition to his service at Oakland City College, Professor R.E. Simms was an ordained minister, serving eight different churches over the span of sixty-eight years. He was also the proud father of seven children. When Dr. Simms decided to leave his post at OCC in order to pastor the Plano First Baptist Church in Plano, Ill., OCC awarded Dr. Simms an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree for his service to Oakland City College and to God. In September 2009, Dr. Jack Tichenor, Oakland City University s former Vice President of Development, visited Dr. R.E. Simms son Glenn to discuss the guidelines and framework for the scholarship. On Dec. 15, 2014, the daughter of Glenn and Nancy Simms, Lowrie Kuhn, visited Dr. Ray Barber, OCU President, and presented a corpus gift to establish the scholarship fund. Mrs. Kuhn said that her parents desired to give the tithing money from their estate to Oakland City University for the Dr. R.E. Simms. Mrs. Kuhn also mentioned that her father loved the Lord very much, but he had hoped that God wasn t in too much of a hurry because Dad still had a lot to accomplish. This scholarship was one of those things. Glenn and Nancy Simms went home to be with the Lord but their intentions to support Oakland City University s students will not be forgotten. IN 1922, R.E. SIMMS, SUPERINTENDENT OF THE ONAWAY MICHIGAN SCHOOL DISTRICT, RECEIVED AN INVITATION FROM OCC PRESIDENT DR. PRENTICE DEARING TO JOIN THE FACULTY. Dr. R.E. 22 BRIAN BAKER, Director of Advancement LEAVING A LEGACY OF CHARACTER AND FAITH It is a joy to share with you the opportunities before Oakland City University in the 2015 Annual Report. We hope you have enjoyed reading how OCU is training leaders with an aptitude for service. Our students only succeed because men and women, like you, lay a solid foundation for their growth. Furthermore, the University only advances its mission and vision because of your investments. One of the greatest joys we share as Oakland City University alumni and friends is supporting the next generation of Christian leaders. The Rev. Billy Graham once stated: The greatest legacy that you can pass on to children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in life, but rather a legacy of character and faith. Rev. Graham s profound statement challenges us, as believers, to pass on our wisdom, core values, and resources to prepare others for the great harvest. As you plan your year-end financial giving, we are forever grateful for your decision to leave a legacy of character and faith enabling future OCU students to Go Forth To Serve. For there is no better place to invest your time, your talent, and your treasure than in the Kingdom work of Oakland City University. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and financial support. May the Lord richly bless you and your family. In His Service, Brian J. Baker 99, 03 Director of Advancement BUT LAY UP FOR YOURSELVES TREASURES IN HEAVEN, WHERE NEITHER MOTH NOR RUST DOTH CORRUPT, AND WHERE THIEVES DO NOT BREAK THROUGH NOR STEAL; FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE WILL YOUR HEART BE ALSO. -MATTHEW 6:20-21 LEAVING A LEGACY OF CHARACTER AND FAITH ANNUAL REPORT 2015
