1 April 13, 2018 April 19, The Week of April 7th was Volunteer Appreciation Week. Lathrop took a moment to thank all outside volunteers for their time spent teaching classes, assisting with Art and other activities, Thrift Shop sales and dog visits. Volunteers were presented with a variety of gifts depending upon the volunteer s role. Additionally, we will be thanking all board members at the upcoming meeting in appreciation for giving their time participating in committee meetings or attending various events. Last, but certainly not least, we d like to thank all residents who donate their time to help make Lathrop the Community it is.

3 HAPPENINGS On This Week s Calendar Sunday, 4/14, at 2:30: Music Committee presents New Leaf (MTR) New Leaf is a traditional Irish trio playing tight, rollicking jigs and reels, new spins on traditional songs, and some of the more unusual tunes of the Irish repertoire. The group consists of John Tabb on button accordion, Kira Jewett on fiddle, and Adam Braunschweig on guitar, vocals, and anything else he happens to bring -- could be harmonica, tenor banjo, or even an octave mandolin." New Leaf's bright, driving rhythm will bring cheer to your afternoon! Sunday, 4/14, at 3:30: Art Committee Reception for Artists of the Month Christy and Roger Patrick (Inn Lobby) In this exhibit, "The Kids Are Alright," this month's artists weave childhood in and out of their works. Roger Patrick revisits old family photos and interprets them in paint. Christy Patrick recalls childhood behaviors of the kids in her urban upbringing. The Patricks met at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Connecticut. She earned an MFA degree at UMass Amherst; he received his from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. For our show, his paintings and her drawings were chosen to work with each other thematically and to present a variety of approaches to similar compositional ideas. Meet the Patricks on Sunday and learn more about their work. Tuesday, 4/16, at 2:00: Easter Stuff You Should Know w/julie (LW) There's more to the Easter story than chocolate, egg hunts and bunnies. Learn the historical significance. And even though it s not all about chocolate, there will be a bunny and chocolate egg history lesson, ending with melt-in-your-mouth chocolate and jelly beans to eat. Wednesday, 4/17, at 2:00: Passover Stuff You Should Know w/julie (LW) Join Julie to discuss the meaning of Passover and the symbolic and mystical importance of the food on the Seder plate, the plagues and the story. Come taste the bread of freedom together and celebrate. Silver Screen in MTR at 7:15 Saturday, 4/13: Cool Hand Luke A look at a prison camp with a little humor. "What we have here is failure to communicate." Memorable scenes. Wednesday, 4/17: Cider House Rules Partly filmed in Northampton at the old State Hospital. John Irving story of a boy raised in a Maine orphanage by a doctor who treats him as his son. Still Time to Sign Up! Saturday, 4/13: Bach Festival at UMass Fine Arts Center presents St. Matthew s Passion Tuesday, 4/16: Shop Trader Joe s in the morning, Walmart Northampton in the afternoon Thursday, 4/18: Pianist Jaiyun Sun performs Beethoven at Smith s Sweeney Concert Hall. Thrift Shop Reminder When purchasing items from the Sales Table, located outside of the Thrift Shop, during non-thrift Shop hours, cash and checks should be given to Nina, or the individual working the Front Desk. A note was left on it saying good read, so most likely someone else took it wanting to read it, BUT we need to return it to the correct place. If you ve taken the book, could you please call Sherrod Perkins-Keane at ? 3

4 OUR LATHROP LAND High Praise for Lathrop By Barbara Walvoord Lathrop received very high praise at the Easthampton Conservation Commission meeting this past Monday night, April 8. As Land Conservation Committee chair, I reported our progress removing invasive plants from 50 acres of our forests and the Bassett Brook flood plain. The Commission expressed appreciation for this work, and for our identification and certification of vernal pools on our land. Gerrit Stover, a well-known local conservationist with the Pascommuck Conservation Trust, said in this public meeting that Lathrop was the best private landowner in the state, bar none, in terms of land stewardship, for our removal of invasives and nurturing the health of our land. The central purpose of Lathrop s meeting with the Commission was for Thom, Berkshire Design s Mark Dornald, and me to speak informally with the Commission about Lathrop's plans for a 75-acre Conservation Restriction (CR) and the ways in which our building plans can be consonant with the wetlands and stream protection laws that the Commission must enforce. The discussion was preliminary; no specific building plans or CR boundaries were proposed. We and the Commission identified some wetland-related issues that will need to be addressed as Lathrop s plans move forward. All of us viewed a map of the original CR boundaries proposed in 1996, before any building on our campus, but never formalized. Both we and the Commission agreed that those boundaries were much more convoluted than they needed to be, and should now be reconsidered in light of changing wetland boundaries, which Berkshire Design has recently updated for us. Thom emphasized that Lathrop will fulfill the 75-acre obligation. BACKGROUND INFO: A Conservation Restriction is a permanent, deeded condition that leaves ownership of the land to us, but prevents development and designates a monitoring body such as the city or Kestrel Land Trust. The city Planning Board is the body that will approve our building plans and the boundaries of the CR. The Conservation Commission, with which we met Monday night, only enforces wetland and stream regulations, so they'll make sure that our building plans do not violate those regulations. Residents, some of whom have themselves removed invasive plants on our land, walked last summer with Jeff Allen, one of the contractors who also removes invasives for us, supported by resident financial donations. 4

5 WELLNESS MATTERS Life In Community By Rob Olmsted Most Inn residents come here after a full life of independence. Whether they were homeowners or apartment dwellers, few have lived in a communal setting such as the Inn since college. With its grounding in Quaker values, the Lathrop community provides a rich opportunity to develop deep, productive relationships that can nourish life as it moves through the many changes that can come with aging. As you settle in to your new home, you may find some of these important aspects of life in the Lathrop Inn community, informed by the Quaker-based values of Kendal: Respect for Privacy we ask all, residents and staff, to acknowledge the personal boundaries that govern the sharing of information, be it medical, family, etc. Wellness staff are bound by laws around protected health information, and all good neighbors by the expectation of respect and consideration. The erosive effect of gossip has no place in a supportive community, and we urge all to speak directly to others when they have concerns or feel the need to address an issue. Respect for Autonomy - outside of protecting personal safety and the peace of the community, Lathrop respects the rights of residents and their families to make the decisions they choose when it comes to questions of how best to age in place, guided as able behind the scenes by our professional staff. While they might not be the decisions we would make for ourselves, in community we have the opportunity to set our views aside and bear witness to another s choices. Inclusivity- each resident brings her or his own gifts of experience and perspective, and each comes with the shared expectation that he/she will be accepted and supported by the community. Our hope is that everyone s first response will be from a place of kindness and generosity. Fair Use your Residency Agreement outlines the scope of available services included for all residents. Life in community assumes respect for the sharing of communal resources, which means staff time as well as material supports. There are also numerous programs and services in place for the use of those who elect to pay for them. These include additional care provision, outings, personal fitness training and contracted services such as the visiting foot nurse. Acting in Integrity our actions arise from an acceptance of the common spirit found within each member of the community. It is hoped that we can take responsibility for how our words and actions effect all of those around us. The challenge is to include all voices in the conversation and to resist the urge to personalize and hold judgements. The value of patience and remaining open may take more time when decisions are to be made, but it is hoped that all can then find themselves heard and valued. Tuesday, 4/16, 3:00 5:00: National Healthcare Decisions Day (Lobby) Since your arrival, and then regularly during Wellness review conversations, you have had opportunities to discuss the importance of advance healthcare decision-making. Our friends at the Cooley Dickinson VNA will be on site in The Inn to further those conversations and provide more guidance in completing your advanced directives. 5
