5 The Scripture Reading A Guide to the Morning Service The Book of Consolation: The Davidic Covenant (Jeremiah 33:1-26) The best of all promises The Book of Consolation ends with further promises for the hope and future of Israel and Judah. Although Jerusalem is about to be destroyed, in coming days it will be fully restored to become the City of God. The project of urban renewal described in this oracle of restoration is bound up with the messianic promise of the coming king the Branch of David, the Lord our righteousness who by the promise of the everlasting covenant will reign on God s throne forever (vv ). The covenant promise of eternal salvation is just as certain as all Jeremiah s prophecies of judgment against Jerusalem. (Literary Study Bible, Crossway) The Introduction of New Members During the morning services, a group of new members will openly confess their trust in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior of sinners, as He is offered in the gospel. They were received into the membership by the Session on the afternoon of June 2. This Sunday they are presented to the congregation. Listen closely to the five questions of membership. They beautifully summarize key points of Christian faith and discipleship. And be sure to welcome these brothers and sisters, heartily. Matthew Henry once said: When we take God for our God, we take His people for our people. Taking our church membership vows seriously is one way we can show that we understand this truth. 1. Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope save in His sovereign mercy? 2. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the Gospel? 3. Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes the followers of Christ? 4. Do you promise to support the Church in its worship and work to the best of your ability? 5. Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the Church, and promise to study its purity and peace? The Psalm, Hymn, and Spiritual Songs Hallelujah! Hallelujah! We begin our worship this morning by singing together this wonderful text which is based off the concluding hymn of praise in the Psalter, Psalm 150. Today, we sing it to the well-known tune Alleluia (that of Mighty God, While Angels Bless You ). The God of Abraham Praise After hearing the Jewish cantor, Meyer Lyon, sing the traditional Jewish doxology Yigdal Elohim ( magnify the Lord ), in the Duke s Place Synagogue, London, England, Thomas Olivers prepared an English paraphrase of it in twelve stanzas (around 1770). Olivers reportedly said, I have rendered it from the Hebrew, giving it, as far as I could, a Christian character, and I have called on Leoni [the cantor Lyon] who has given me a synagogue melody to suit it. This text begins by praising God for His sovereignty and faithfulness to His people (st. 1-2). God gives His people a land of milk and honey, an image that becomes a rich metaphor for the new creation (st. 3-4) in which angels sing, Holy, holy, holy, and all creatures join in praise to God (st. 5). Notice how Olivers employed many biblical references in this hymn, especially from Exodus 3 and the great doxologies in Revelation 4, 5, and 7. Man of Sorrows! What a Name Philip Bliss, composer of the tune to When Peace Like a River (or It is Well with My Soul ), wrote both the lyrics and the music to this well-known and loved meditation on the atoning work of Jesus Christ. It is a wholly suitable response to the morning sermon text and message.
