5 The Scripture Reading A Guide to the Morning Service God s Judgment on Judah: Covenant Curse (Jeremiah 34:1-22) Emancipation revocation The main action of the narrative continues with a prophetic dialogue between Jeremiah and Zedekiah, whom the Babylonians have installed as their puppet king in Jerusalem. The prophet condemns Zedekiah for his faithlessness in first proclaiming liberty for Judah s slaves and then later putting them back under the yoke of slavery. By violating God s protections for slaves and the biblical provisions for their ultimate freedom, the king has broken covenant with God. As a result, he will be taken captive by the Babylonians. A story about a divinely appointed leader s failure to follow through on his God-given responsibility becomes a story of judgment on a national scale. (Literary Study Bible, Crossway) The Gideon Report Each year we have a Gideon Sunday at First Presbyterian Church. We love the ministry of The Gideons and support it faithfully. The Gideons International was founded in 1899 and is the oldest Christian business and professional men s association in the United States of America. The primary function of The Gideons is placing and distributing Bibles and New Testaments in the human traffic lanes and streams of national life. The Gideons, as laymen, stand shoulder to shoulder as missionaries of local churches and their pastors in going to the four corners of the world to win others for the Lord Jesus Christ. Annually, The Gideons International is placing and distributing more than 59,000,000 Scriptures worldwide. To God be the glory! This averages one million copies of the Word of God placed every seven days, or 112 per minute! A non-profit organization, The Gideons International is generously supported by pastors and churches who realize that presenting people with the Holy Scripture is an indispensable element in winning people to Christ. Every dollar contributed by members of this church will be used to make it possible for others to have their very own copy of God s Word. The Psalm, Hymn, and Spiritual Songs Holy, Holy, Holy! We begin our worship this morning by singing together one of our favorite hymns of praise. What can one say to do justice to this great hymn of Reginald Heber and to the magnificent tune Nicea by John Dykes? Albert Edward Bailey opines: No hymn has greater dignity and uplifting power. The lyric gives us a succession of staccato assertions about the Triune God. He is Lord God Almighty, thrice holy, Merciful and mighty, adored, worshiped, eternal, unequaled, perfect in power, in love, and purity. The whole shape of the hymn is Trinitarian, that is, it serves to accent the unique Christian doctrine of the Trinity: God is one God who eternally exists in three persons, and it is the very centerpiece of our faith. How Firm a Foundation Another one of our favorites, this American folk hymn richly extols the virtues of God s Word and our assurance of salvation. The firm foundation of which we sing is none other than the Bible. Here we sing that the foundation of the Christian faith is the Bible in which God has given us a gracious revelation of Himself and pointed us to Jesus Christ what more can he say? Nothing but the Blood A very appropriate hymn which we have used several times in conjunction with our study in the Book of Hebrews. In it, we sing of the means by which our redemption was purchased, the only way that we could be saved: the precious blood of Jesus Christ. We are a people bought with the very blood of God, for only the blood of God Himself was sufficient to cover all of our sins and reconcile us to Himself. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that we who have come to Jesus Christ have been sprinkled in blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Abel s blood cried out to heaven for justice against his murderer, while we stand washed in the blood of the Lamb, as it speaks forth mercy and pardon and marks us as members of God s family. We sing this hymn as a sobering reminder to ourselves and the watching world that the blood of Jesus Christ is the only shield and covering from the wrath to come.
