While though the tempest loudly roars, I hear the truth, it liveth, and though the darkness round me close, songs in the night it giveth. No storm can shake inmost calm, while to that Rock I m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? 5 A Guide to the Morning Service Scripture Reading Jeremiah versus the false prophets: Jeremiah s Temple Sermon The Aftermath Jeremiah 26:124 The temple sermon and its aftermath The message Jeremiah gives at the beginning of this chapter appears to be the same message he preached back in chapter 7 his temple sermon. Here the story is brought to completion with an account of the death threats the prophet received afterward for saying that Jerusalem and its temple will be destroyed (26:7 11, 16). The narrative is full of vivid details that convey the climate of public opinion during the troubled years leading up to the fall of Jerusalem. The conflict between Jeremiah s supporters and the people who considered him public ene number one highlights a central concern of the book as a whole: Is Jeremiah telling the truth about the coming judgment or not? In the end, the people agree to wait and see, sparing the prophet s life for the time being. (Literary Study Bible, Crossway) The Psalm, Hymn, and Spiritual Songs Hallelujah, Praise Jehovah, O My Soul We begin our worship today by singing Psalm 146, this version comes from the Psalter of The tune, Ripley, is familiar to us (we sing Lord, with Glowing Heart I d Praise Thee to it) and was a Gregorian chant melody arranged by the great Lowell Mason. Mason was interested in music from childhood. He lived in Savannah, Georgia, for 15 years, worked as a bank clerk, and cultivated his music on the side. His first musical collection was finally accepted in 1822 (by the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston, Massachusetts, his native state), and went through 17 editions, selling 50,000 copies. It was adopted by singing schools in New England and eventually church choirs. Mason eventually served as the director of music at the Hanover, Green, Park, and Bowdoin Street churches (all the while holding on to his job as teller at the American Bank!). In Boston, Mason became the first music teacher in an American public school. In 1833, he cofounded the Boston Acade of Music; in 1838, he became music superintendent for the Boston school system. Lowell Mason wrote over 1,600 religious works and is often called the father of American church music. O Quickly Come, Dread Judge of All For us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as He is offered in the gospel and have received Him as our Savior and Lord, His coming shall be a great day when at the sight of our King, our faith shall be rewarded as doubt and fear dissipate like mist before the sun. The weary saints pressing onward and homeward to Zion, oppressed by the world, the flesh, and the devil in this life, shall rejoice to be gathered to the presence of our King the Judge to find joy and peace, health, and life in dwelling with Him forevermore. This hymn was one of the first written by Lawrence Tuttiett, the vicar of Lea Marston. Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting This hymn is one of our congregation s favorites and comes to us from the late nineteenth century and the pen of Jean Sophia Pigott. Pigott ( ) was born in Ireland and died there in Leixlip, Lucan, County Kildare. Facts about her are scarce, though she did contribute some hymns to Hymns of Consecration and Faith, and in 1877, published A Royal Service, and Other Poems. This is a song of praise to Christ for his love and grace. Sing it as a glad prayer of petition and praise, and sing it with understanding (even though it s so well known some of you could easily do so by rote). As we prepare to offer back to God a portion of that which he has given to us, let us sing this hymn reminding ourselves of the goodness that He has lavished upon us in the wealth of grace that He has shown us. My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less It s important that we frequently sing the Gospel. That s just what we do in this great song. When this hymn was first published, it was entitled The Immutable Basis of a Sinner s Hope, and its first line was: Nor earth nor hell soul can move. Edward Mote wrote the words of this great hymn. He spent his early career in the cabinetry business. One strong influence in his life was John Hyatt, who preached at Tottenham Court Road Chapel, one of the chapels run by Lady Huntingdon. Mote became a Baptist pastor in 1874, serving at Horsham, Sussex, for 26 years. He was so well loved that his congregation offered him title to the church building, but he said: I do not want the chapel, I only want the pulpit; and when I cease to preach Christ, then turn me out of that.
