5 A Guide to the Morning Service The Introduction of New Members During the morning services, a group of new members will openly confess their trust in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior of sinners, as He is offered in the gospel. They were received into the membership by the Session in the afternoon of August 3, This Sunday they are presented to the congregation. Listen closely to the five questions of membership. They beautifully summarize key points of Christian faith and discipleship. And be sure to welcome these brothers and sisters, heartily. Matthew Henry once said: When we take God for our God, we take His people for our people. Taking our church membership vows seriously is one way we can show that we understand this truth. 1. Do you acknowledge yourselves to be sinners in the sight of God, justly deserving His displeasure, and without hope save in His sovereign mercy? 2. Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, and Savior of sinners, and do you receive and rest upon Him alone for salvation as He is offered in the Gospel? 3. Do you now resolve and promise, in humble reliance upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, that you will endeavor to live as becomes the followers of Christ? 4. Do you promise to support the Church in its worship and work to the best of your ability? 5. Do you submit yourselves to the government and discipline of the Church, and promise to study its purity and peace? A Guide to the Evening Service The Mission Report Tonight we will hear a report on the Internationals Conversational English Class ministry from American Partner, Diane Defore. Along with 40 other American Partners, they have enjoyed the blessing of meeting hundreds of internationals and observed the providence of God in drawing many internationals to Christ. This ministry meets on Tuesday nights during the school year and is designed to reach the Internationals who have saturated the Jackson area. Founded by Corinne and David Bradford over 17 years ago, this outreach has offered Conversational English classes, a broad range of social and travel adventures, the opportunity to experience American friendships, and a clear presentation of the Gospel. Learn firsthand about this ministry at an Orientation Session on Tuesday night, August 26th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Patterson Hall. Also, is a resource for more information. The Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs For All the Saints This well-known and encouraging hymn is a congregational favorite, and with good reason. It points us to the realities of heaven that are enjoyed by those saints who now rest from their labors here on earth, and reminds those of us who are still soldiers in the church militant (the church on earth) that soon, soon to faithful warriors come their rest. It gives us a glimpse of Emmanuel s land, filled with praises and testimony of those who have gone before us, who have fought the good fight, and have claimed the victor s crown. It encourages us to remain faithful, true, and bold and to fight as the saints who nobly fought of old. The final two stanzas leave us with a vision of the Day of Resurrection, when believers rise in bright array as the King of Glory passes on His way and the whole earth responds, Singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia! Set to Ralph Vaughan Williams majestic tune, Sine Nomine (Latin for without a name ), this hymn is a beautiful way to begin our Evening Worship service as we worship the Captain of our salvation, and consider Christ s eternal and expanding kingdom in conjunction with our study of Jonah. God, in the Gospel of His Son Following our hearing God s Word preached, this hymn of response appropriately thanks God for the truth of His word, especially as it is revealed in His Son, Jesus Christ. We sing it to the familiar tune Germany, the same tune to which we sing Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness.

8 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS FALL 2014 Beginning: Wednesday, August 20 For the past ten years, First Presbyterian Church has invested in the lives of its members by offering and encouraging participation in discipleship groups. These small groups meet on Wednesday evenings following the family night supper and emphasize personal growth, relationship building, and accountability. We have been very encouraged by the response to this ministry and want to invite those not participating in any of our Wednesday night programs to consider joining one of these small groups. Our goal is discipleship and growth in grace. With the busyness of our world, we need to take time to stop, listen, pray, and wrestle with issues of spiritual growth together. The prophet Jeremiah reminds us of the importance of this growth process: Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 9:23-24) If you are not involved in our Wednesday evening discipleship groups, now is the time to join.
