5 A GUIDE TO THE MORNING SERVICE Guest Minister Jon Eide with his wife, Tracy, have served in the Slavic world for fifteen years, twelve of them being in Ukraine in two different cities. They have been a part of four different church plants, all of which are now pastored by nationals and are independent churches. Jon currently serves as the Country Director for Mission to the World, Ukraine, and helps with a current church plant in the Kyiv. He serves to develop Ukrainian pastors, and be involved in the evangelism and discipleship that God is using to establish and grow His church. Jon and Tracy have three children - 18-year-old, Alison, is a Freshmen at Geneva College, 15-year-old, Natalie, is a sophomore in high school, and they adopted their son, Zachary, from Ukraine who is now 8 years old. The Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs God Is Known among His People (Psalm 76) Our first hymn is a majestic setting of Psalm 76 from The Psalter of 1912 and is well known to our congregation. It highlights God s sovereign control over all things. Stanza 3 proclaims that He is both the Great Judge and the executioner of His judgments. It also draws a distinction between God s people (to whom He is known and with whom He has established His abode), and His enemies, who receive His just displeasure. It is set to the tune of Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven ( Lauda Anima ). Hark! The Voice of Jesus Crying This was our theme song for our 2001 Mission Conference, and well suits our time together this morning. This old missionary hymn is well known to this congregation and is more of a sermon in song than a song of praise or prayer. It may be helpful to think of it as a self-exhortation or to view this as a mutual exhortation (that is, think of us as a family urging one another on in faithfulness to God s call as we sing). The first stanza asks us to consider the cry of Jesus, Who will go and work today? and then poses the question, who will answer? The second and third stanzas pressure each one of us to think what he will do to further the work of missions. If we can t go to another nation, we can go across the street. If we can t give huge sums, we can give small sums sacrificially. If we aren t called to be a missionary, we can pray for them. The final stanza openly challenges us. No one can say, There is nothing I can do. Let us all answer as the prophet did in Isaiah 6: Here I am; send me, send me however different the Lord s sending is for each one of us. O Church, Arise As we close our time of worship this morning, we do so by singing this modern hymn by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, our theme song for this year s Mission Conference. It serves as a great reminder that our call to mission is indeed a call to victory since Christ will have the prize for which He died An inheritance of nations.
