1 One of the greatest accomplishments in all of human history occurred through Nehemiah and the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem in 52 days. Nehemiah was a slave, in bondage in a foreign land. But he was connected through prayer to the God who made and controls the universe. All that occurred could not have been dreamed, but it happened because Nehemiah was a man to whom prayer was a first response, not a last resort. Notice the consistency of his prayer. 1. He prayed when he was burdened 2. He prayed when the sins of the people were overwhelming. 3. He prayed when he had an overwhelming task to do. 4. He prayed right in the middle of hard conversations. 5. He prayed when he had a physical, financial need that was impossible. 6. He prayed when he had opposition to the work from visible enemies. 7. He prayed when he was in the midst of a personally overwhelming task. 8. He prayed when he was being falsely accused by his enemies and was weak and discouraged. 9. He prayed when he was frightened by his enemies. 10. He prayed with others when God had accomplished the work and given victory and they came to consecrate themselves and make a fresh covenant with God. 11. He prayed when he found the people slipping back into sin. 12. He prayed when he had to confront his people for their backsliding. Apparently, Nehemiah believed prayer not position was the key to change a nation, and it became his natural response in every circumstance. Through prayer, this humble slave brought God into the equation of his nation s horrible condition. And so must we. O CT-NOV-DEC I N & OUT O F T H E PEW S P A G E 1
2 JOIN US FOR FAMILY NIGHT ON WEDNESDAYS! Family Night (formerly Prayz Night) has begun and there is something for everyone. We begin with a meal at 6 pm, followed by praise and music in the sanctuary. There are classes available for children and adults. We finish at 7:30 pm. Come for the meal and enjoy the music and learning about God s love for us. Invite your friends and neighbors! Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve the meals each Wednesday. Please contact Sue Peppers to sign up to bring food or work in the kitchen preparing, serving and/or cleaning up afterward. Family Night Schedule: Oct. 3, 10, and Trunk or Treat on the 31 st Nov. 7, Dec. 5, 12 (program and shopping) Summer Block Parties 2018 In July, bike riders met at the church to ride to Dairy Queen via the Panhandle Pathway. It was a lovely evening, as many church members rode and/or joined us at DQ for dinner and fellowship. A "huge" thank you goes out to all those who helped make this evening a success! At the beginning of August, we hosted our annual "Back to School" Bash. Close to 80 people participated in this event! Lots of activities took place, including a carry-in dinner, a bouncy house, child I.D.'s, Lego building, face painting, football, great entertainment, fellowship and more. What a fabulous turn-out! 5 2019 MISSION TRIP TO RED BIRD PLANNED Desiring to become a more missional church and having visited this United Methodist Mission in the East Kentucky mountains of Appalachia, Pastor Dave Marty from Winamac and I have decided to offer our congregations an opportunity to physically go and help. The plans include a week-long visit from July of Red Bird Mission and Red Bird Clinic have been providing ministries in this region of the Appalachian Mountains since Today the need remains critical in this isolated, rural distressed area. Chronic poverty, lack of jobs, poor housing, and rugged mountainous terrain provide obstacles to a fuller life for the residents of this area. Red Bird Mission and Clinic strives to meet these needs through ministry in five areas: Education, Health and Wellness, Community Outreach, Economic Opportunity, and Community Housing Improvement. This year-round work opportunity for volunteers in mission strives to provide home repair for low-income community residents and maintenance for Mission buildings and grounds. Some examples of work projects are roof replacement, small room additions, painting, building porches or ramps, and grounds keeping. Other light duty work is available such as cutting soup UPCs, office work, craft and community store helpers, and recycling. A single fee covers the cost of each person s lodging, meals, and materials used. In addition to providing mission opportunities, we strive to provide an atmosphere where participants grow spiritually and gain a personal understanding of mission. Evenings are spent in Christian fellowship and learning about the diverse ministries of Red Bird Mission.
