Hi fellow Lions, I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break and managed to enjoy some summer. Looking back we all enjoyed our Christmas dinner at our last meeting in December, followed by the children's Christmas party, both with Father Christmas giving out gifts. The children's Christmas party was well attended and enjoyed by young and old alike. Thanks for the glowing report in the Carterton Cryer Lion Steve, though it will cost you with the tail twister at our next meeting. Thanks to Lion Paul Reid for the large range of food and drink for everyone there. Thanks also go to Camp Quality for the use of their bouncy castle and to those who got it there and back again. Our first meeting back was well attended with an interesting presentation from Steve McDowell, from McCarthys Transport and a nice meal. Mike Topp has promised us a bigger and better range of meals for this coming year. The High Tea was well supported on Sunday afternoon with 28 Lions and partners attending with a range of tea & coffee being drank out of the best Bone China, Cucumber sandwiches were among the range of sandwiches, Scones with clotted cream and jam, Cup-cakes with a variety of other tiny cakes and of course the bubbles. Thanks to Lion Robin and his team for organising a really nice afternoon, of which people can't wait for the next one. Presidents from Zone 4 have been invited to lunch in Wellington, on Wednesday 22nd of February of which I plan to attend, with the 2nd International Vice President Gudrun Bjort Yngvadottir from Sweden, and her husband Dr.John Bjarni Thorsteinssona past International Director. Both are progressive Melvin Jones Fellows. There is also a Zone meeting on Thursday 23rd at Greytown that Secretary Ian and I hope to be present at. The caravan as usual is and has been busy with the Masterton A&P show last Saturday, and hopefully the weather improves for those events scheduled for this weekend. Lion Harry has been busy all year with a lot on and quite a few meetings with Carterton Council and DOC. The planting of trees at Carters reserve was a big job, so it is disappointing and annoying to find 20 trees have been stolen. If they are such keen gardeners we could give them a job out there. Our Zone Chairman has nominated our Club for the District awards at the March 24, 25,26, 202M District Convention for the Charles Rooking Carter statue. We have quite a few names going already, (but we could do with more)to Solway College with a James Bond function on the Saturday night. Our club is putting on transport, free of charge to members and partners for the dinner. It should be a fun night out. The partners programme on Saturday for men and women, is morning tea at Solway, followed by a visit to MasterWeave textiles, paua World, Shoc Chocolates, and Cobblestones Museum. Lunch is at your own cost while shopping in town or at the White Swan. Other things to look forward to, completion of Ian Renall's seat (I have seen it at 5 metres long you won't miss it). The house for the Surrey at Sparks Park, the walking track at Carters reserve, the BBQ At Carrington Park and the day out at Castlepoint races at Lion Morris's house right on the finish line as well as inducting new member Dean Day and his wife Nelda at our next meeting. Cheers President John Don t Drink n Bounce!

Sam s Sagacious Spiel Wow it s hard to believe it s February already. I made so many promises, I had so many dreams, I had so many ideas of what I was going to achieve over the holiday break, it s a wonder I m not more guilt ridden. Sound familiar? I can assure you that I haven t had much of a break, with District commitments and planning for our upcoming District Convention next month and the list goes on. My workload has been continuous as I seek out areas of concern, and bring these issues to cabinet for an attempt of resolution. I have also experienced, on several occasions, Lions with personal issues who have had sufficient trust in me, to share in the hope that I might have some words of encouragement. I have treasured this trust, and grateful that I have been given this privilege. During my official Club visitations, I expounded my belief of my Family history, by showing the GORDIAN KNOT. This is a celebration of my Family s Celtic History and where I have come from. We must learn from the PAST and where we have come from but not to dwell on it. We are in the PRESENT so of course we must relate to it and rise to the challenges it gives. BUT we must look to the FUTURE ensuring that it has much to offer to ourselves and our Lions Clubs. Enthusiasm and belief in what we do for ourselves and our Community is Vital. Our very survival depends on this. Since last report to cabinet I have completed my allocation of Club visits. Much is to be gained from this personally and I see that generally Clubs view the visit of their District Governor as a time when they can share both their challenges and achievements. A further visit to Camp Quality this year, confirmed in me, that the work that we do is much appreciated. I have treasured the value of the District Governor s Support Group (DGSG) which was instigated this year and will carry on to Rex s year. This support group seeks with around the table chatting, sharing of ideas and concerns. I have found it to be a great sounding board. Not all issues are resolved, but gives each of us a sense of support as we seek to serve the district Our November Council Meeting in Wellington, stressed more than ever the need for seeking out solutions. District D was in Danger Zone because of falling membership and now in transition. There is a huge amount of work for our very survival, and this leads on to: NEW MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB. As a District, we need to pursue several challenges and mountains to climb. These challenges are not just for Cabinet, but Club leaders as well. There are potential Lions out there for all such positions. We need to encourage their enthusiasm and knowledge and give them opportunities to consider the challenge. Then, when they pick up the challenge continue to support then in their task. Last month, I was the Guest speaker at the U3A Group in Hastings. There were some 100 keen and eager, well-educated adults willing to learn more about Lions and our role in the community. It was an opportunity to expand on our Logo and that We Serve. I was astounded at several who obviously had no idea as to what we did. What an opportunity, and a big lesson for us to heed. We need to be more Proactive in our Community, and not be ashamed to advertise. If we want to do something exceptional, We must make an exceptional effort. I ask each of you to consider making the extra effort to come to this year s District Convention, in Masterton. Not only are you supporting me, but reaffirming your commitment not only to your own Club, but Lions in your District, WE DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Sam Browne District Governor 202M

Great to have Lion Mick Rayner Our Almoner & Lion Alan James back attending meetings. Mick has certainly recovered well after breaking his leg as has Alan after he suffered from a minor stroke late last year. Lion Ken Sage is recovering well after blacking out while out riding his bike around the Wairarapa Roads. Also Lion Des Heath fell from his bike but managed to avoid serious injury, for which we are most grateful. Thanks to all those members whom attended Beverly Hutchings Funeral late last year. Bev had a lovely send off, which was attended by a few hundred people. I do hope the remainder of our Lions members and their families are in good health and look forward to seeing you all at one of our many outings coming up in the very near future. Lion Steve on behalf of Mick our Almoner Lion Ken Sage Lion Alan James

Welcome back Lions, Joce and I had a couple of visitors from the land of Marsupials, Snakes, Spiders & Crocodiles for a day just before Christmas. Jesse and Lachlan had featured in Queensland Lion s Young Speechmaker contest and were great ambassadors for Lions and Australia. We took them to the Masterton sale-yards where fortuitously we were selling lambs, then to Pukaha (Mount Bruce bird reserve) where Jesse and Lachlan had the Lachlan & Jesse feeding the Eels opportunity to feed the eels. We finished with a stop at Paua World, where our Australian visitors boosted the local Economy, procuring small gifts for the folks back home. Jocelyn and I thoroughly enjoyed their Company. I have received a Lion s letter promoting this year s Young Speechmaker Contest; a contest that offers generous prizes. Lions are promoting this through the secondary schools. It is suggested that the Lions clubs (that s us) assist with the $75 entrance fee and travelling expenses. If we wish to assist entrants from our patch, I suggest we communicate this to the schools. Cheers Don All members who have addresses on the membership list will have received an account showing their current account balance. I am sorry that these have been so long in coming and that some members will have received a shock at either how much they owe or, conversely, how much they are in credit. All future invoices will be ed as they are created and statements will be ed at the end of every month. If you do not wish to receive your accounts by please let me know and I will give you printed statements at the first meeting of the next month. Preferred payment is by direct credit; cheques are acceptable but please remember to add the 25 cent bank cheque fee. If you wish to pay for your meal in cash on the night that is acceptable too. I'm looking forward to your feedback at the next meeting. Des, Treasurer

I hope everyone has had a great break and is looking forward to another year of volunteer work out in our local community. Murray and I have some great guest speakers lined up for up-coming meetings which we hope will engage you all at some point with their varying topics. Tonight we have Liz Kirkland from Ears to You which is a Wairarapa Ear Health Clinic, based at Masterton Medical on Colombo Rd, Masterton. Liz is the Wairarapa s first specialised Ear Nurse. The first meeting in March will have one of NZ s Legendary Stud Stock Agents Kevin Ryan visiting our club. Murray has organised Kevin, whom is rated very highly as a guest speaker. Kevin played an integral part in the early stages of developing trade with China more than a decade ago. One of the challenges of doing business across cultural divides, according to stud stock agent Kevin Ryan, who is involved with the joint venture cattle feedlot established by Angus breeder Tim Wilding in Tieling in central China, is the need for "unbelievable patience." A history of dealing government to government means many Chinese have little understanding of private enterprise. Kevin states that is something they have in common with New Zealanders. The second meeting in March will be a surprise to some members. Our very own Steve Carson is going to tell us about his work experience through the decades as he moved around various parts of the world. I do look forward to hearing from Steve as I have been told he is a very interesting speaker. Please don t hesitate to contact either Murray or myself if you know of someone whom would be a great guest speaker and we will contact them to see if they are interested in visiting our club. Cheers Alan Steve Carson

Steve McDowell CEO from McCarthy Transport Ltd gave us a fantastic insight into the company which has gone from strength to strength in the transport industry for over 60yrs. The weekend after the Martinborough Fair, we attended the Masterton Motorplex Drags, which was held over 2 days. The A&P Show was a wash out and we didn t bother taking the Food Van. Next outing is the second Martinborough Fair on the 4 th March. Cheers Paul The Van Man Membership within the club is ticking along well. We currently have 42 members with 3 members resigning since changeover. We welcome to the club a new member 'Dean Day'. 16 Dear Lions, Perhaps you have heard that Lions Clubs International (LCI) approved a new service initiative in June. This is a very exciting time to be a Lion! Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) is eager to support future Lions' service initiatives just as it has for nearly 50 years. Lions, Leos and LCIF will continue working to save sight, fight hunger and protect our environment, just as we always have. But emerging global needs also require our attention. We are developing new ways to expand our capacity to serve in unique areas, including childhood cancer and diabetes, to ensure that we meet the needs of our changing world. We have accomplished so much together, saving lives and offering hope to those who need us most. But our work is not done. I know that we will continue to have a positive impact all over the world and I am delighted to stand beside you as we head into a new and exciting era of service. Remember, LCIF stands with Lions and is here to help you make a difference. Sincerely, Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada Chairperson, Lions Clubs International Foundation

Farmer Jack once lived on a quiet rural highway but as time went by, the traffic slowly built up and eventually got so heavy and so fast that his free range chickens were being run over, at a rate of three to six a week. So Farmer Jack called the local police station to complain, "You've got to do something about all these people driving so fast and killing all my chickens," he said to the local police officer. "What do you want me to do?" asked the policeman. "I don't care, just do something about those crazy drivers!" So the next day the policeman had the Council erect a sign that said: SCHOOL CROSSING Three days later Farmer Jack called the policeman and said, "You've still got to do something about these drivers. The school crossing' sign seems to make them go even faster!" So again, they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY... That really sped them up. So Farmer Jack called and said, "Your signs are no good. Can I put up my own sign?" In order to get Farmer Jack off his back said "Sure. Put up your own sign. The phone calls to the Police Station stopped, but curiosity got the better of the Officer, so he called Farmer John, How s the problem with the speeding drivers. did you put up your sign?" "Oh, I sure did and not one chicken has been killed. The policeman was really curious and thought he'd better go out and take a look at the sign. He also thought the sign might be something the Police could use elsewhere, to slow drivers down... So he drove out to Farmer Jack's house. His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign. 'NUDIST COLONY' 'Slow down and watch for chicks!' PIMP ON A MATE Martin needs your help! Wives, Partners, Lions are all asked to contribute in the Tail-Twisters efforts to fine all lions in attendance. Please contact Martin on Ph: or or keedwell@clear.net.nz

Chilli Cheese Hotdog Using Premier Beehive s Cheesy Sausages Ingredients: 500g Beehive Bacon, cut into small pieces 1 large onion, chopped 800g mince 4 chopped garlic cloves 500g can of tomato sauce 1 cup beef broth 2 Tbsp honey 2 Tbsp sweet paprika 1 Tbsp ground cumin 1 Tbsp chili powder 1 teaspoon cayenne (optional) Salt As many Beehive sausages as you have people Buns Chopped red onion, for garnish Shredded cheese, for garnish Directions: 1. Make the chili first. Fry the bacon over medium heat until it begins to get crispy then add the chopped onions and fry over high heat, stirring often, until they begin to brown. Add in the mince and stir in well. Cook this, still over high heat and stirring occasionally, until the mince is browned. This will take a few minutes. When the mince is about halfway browned, toss in the chopped garlic and mix well. 2. Once the mince is well browned, add the tomato sauce, honey and broth. Add all the spices except the cayenne and stir well. Bring to a simmer and taste. Add salt or the cayenne if it needs it. You can of course add much more cayenne or chili powder if you like things really spicy, but it s best to taste first and then add more. 3. Let the chilli cook on a gentle simmer for at least 30 minutes before you start grilling the sausages. You can cook it several hours if you want to, adding a little more broth here and there if the chili gets to dry. 4. Grill your hot dogs over medium heat until they get a light char. Grill the hot dog buns briefly if you want no more than a minute, as they will burn fast. You can also paint the buns with vegetable oil or butter before grilling if you d like. Sausage in the bun, chili goes on top, sprinkle on chopped red onion and shredded cheese. PREMIER BEEHIVE NZ ARE PROUD SPONSORS OF THE LIONS CLUB OF CARTERTON BULLETIN
