Presidents Message: On April 16 th, I was installed as Maryland President at the Annual Meeting in Havre de Grace, MD. I hope those who attended enjoyed their visit to Havre de Grace. I ve always thought that Havre de Grace was an undiscovered gem a beautiful small city on the Susquehanna River at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Havre de Grace took its name from a comment by the Marquis de Lafayette on a visit there. During the annual meeting we conducted a wreath-laying at the statue of Lafayette in Havre de Grace (see related article). I spent the next two weeks conferring with chairmen and finalizing committee chairs for I made some changes in committees and created a new Committee for Public Safety and Heroism. Don Deering will be the chairman. The purpose of the committee is to assist chapters in awarding police, fire and EMT medals as well as other medals for acts of heroism. Sometimes it can be difficult for chapters to figure out how to work with police and fire agencies to find candidates for these awards. Don will be able to help please contact him. Another priority for me was the Patriot s Ball which will again be held at Turf Valley. This location proved popular last year as we had the highest number of attendees that we have had in many years. Over 130 people attended the ball in I appointed Past President David Hoover chairman of the Patriot s Ball. Dave has previous experiences as chairman of this event and he will provide great leadership. Mark your calendar now for December 17, 2016, 6:30 pm at Turf Valley and get this information out to members of your chapter. It has been a busy two months. I have already traveled from one end of the state to the other with some stops in between. I really enjoy visiting chapters and learning what they are doing. I am amazed at all of the work they do in their communities. I especially enjoy meeting compatriots and talking with them about their interests. So far, I have visited the Col Aquila Hall chapter meeting, the Thomas Stone chapter meeting in Prince Frederick, and the General William Smallwood chapter meeting in Bethesda and installed officers for all three groups. I also attended the Captain John Smoot chapter meeting in Salisbury, MD and the Little Meadows meeting in McHenry. I attended the Col Henry Hollingsworth Memorial Service and chapter meeting and swore in two new members. I ve also had the opportunity to participate in several memorial ceremonies and have presented wreaths. This job lets me see all of Maryland. I ve set a goal of visiting all fifteen chapters in the state before my term ends! I have goals for this year. Some of you have heard this before new members; yes we need new members. New members keep us vibrant and strong; they can bring new ideas to the chapter and state. Another is to keep members from dropping out. We need to understand why members drop and ascertain if we can do something to keep them. I d like for chapters to try a new activity or start up one that has not been done for some time. I would like to see every chapter give out a Flag Certificate; it is easy to do and it is a great activity to encourage a new member to become more active. My most important goal is to encourage members to keep in contact with their fellow compatriots. With all the diversity in the world, we have something in common, our ancestors fought for the creation of this country One of my first priorities was to lock down all of the dates for the coming year. You will see a list of Coming Events elsewhere in this newsletter. I am hoping that giving you lots of advance notice will help you plan to attend as many meetings as you can. I am going to do my best to represent Maryland at the various National meetings. We have two important meetings coming up this summer, with Congress in Boston, Massachusetts and Atlantic Middle States in Albany, New York. My number one pledge to you is to be available when you need help or have a question to be answered. I may not know the answer, but I will find it and get you the information or assistance you need. I hope to see you in my travels!! William P. Committee Reports American Flag Compatriots, a gentle reminder: we are in the final half of the current flag award cycle, which ends Dec. 31 st. If a majority of a state societies chapters award a flag certificate that society qualifies for the Admiral William R. Furlong Award. There are three categories of Flag Certificates. These are Individual, Business/Commercial and Institutional. Only one award is required for a chapter to assist the state societies total for recognition by the Nation Society. The Individual and Business/Commercial categories are self-explanatory. The Institutional Category would be fire company or rescue squad, hospital or school. The display of the flag must be in accordance with the US Flag Code and only applies to the National Standard, not state flags. Awarding a flag certificate is one very easy and visible way to get the community aware of who, we the SAR, are and some of the objectives we as an organization and as an individual stand for. If a business inquires what the cost will be, and I had one ask me that, say nothing but some time for the presentation and pictures. So let us try for 100% participation. If your chapter has presented a Flag Certificate or awards one PLEASE notify me with the recipient s name, category and date. My is eugenemoyer@comcast.net. If there are any questions you can me or call me at Patriotically Submitted, Eugene Moyer, Flag Committee Chair Americanism We ve submitted 2015 Americanism Scoresheets for the State Society and all 15 chapters earlier this year and should be hearing the results at or just after the National Congress. We are following up with the 2016 Scoresheets now, filling them out as each chapter and the state society holds events. You can help a lot by participating in local events. When your chapter has a meeting, a grave marking, or needs members to present awards, volunteer to help and attend! The chapters are taking photos at these events, and when the local community sees lots of members at lots of events, they see SAR as an active part of what goes on around them. If they see lots of us, they might see us as an organization that they might want to get involved in. Do you go to grave markings outside of your chapter? Let your chapter and the state chair know so that that can be recorded. Lots of different participation counts, and if you are attending, for instance, a grave marking that isn t sponsored by your local SAR chapter (either as a DAR event, another in-state SAR chapter, or out of the state) they still count! Not so mobile anymore? There are plenty of things you can do to help your local chapter. For instance, you could make calls to your chapter members on behalf of the chapter officers to let others know of upcoming events. Involved in other groups in your town or county? Talk up SAR and see what opportunities there might be to mutually help the community. There are a number of youth contests involving essays that could be judged from in the confines of your own home. Have you made any donations this year to NSSAR program (such as a Youth Program Endowment Funds, Public Service Program Endowment Funds, Center for Advancing America's Heritage, George Washington Endowment Fund, SAR Foundation, Friends of the Library, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association or the USO)? Let your chapter and the State Americanism Chair know, and the amount. Remember, YOU make the

difference, so help by being an active member of your chapter, either through attending, or supporting its events, you help to perpetuate the ideals of SAR. Let your chapter officers know what you are doing for SAR! Also, contact the Americanism Chair, Jim Engler, at or , or mail to him at 2038 Red River Rd., Sykesville, MD CAR/DAR/SAR Liaison As Chairman of the MDSSAR CAR/DAR/SAR Liaison Committee, I thank the members of the Maryland Society to once again approve a donation in the amount of $1, to the Maryland Society of the Children of the American Revolution in support of the 2017 Maryland State Convention. This annual event is a three day meeting where our future D.A.R. and S.A.R. members learn about our history and how to conduct meetings; it is an excellent learning experience for them. Our donation allows the registration fee to be lower and this is appreciated by the young families with children in the C.A.R. J. Patrick Warner Color Guard Commander Any chapter needing support for an event should contact Color Guard Commander Dave Embrey. Council of Past Presidents Immediate Past President Engler is assembling a three volume manual to help improve state and chapter operations. Volume 1 will cover officer positions; preliminary sections on the Vice President and President positions has already been reviewed by the Past Presidents and passed on to the current holders of those positions. Volume 2 will cover Committees and Programs. Volume 3 will cover items needed by chapters. The volumes will be reviewed by the Past Presidents, Officers and Committee chairs. The intent is to have the volumes available and approved at the Semi-Annual Meeting. If there is anything you would like to have covered, please contact Jim Engler (contact information elsewhere in this newsletter). Eagle Scouts We had nine applicants from seven chapters for this year s Eagle Scout Award. Our winner this year, coming from the Thomas Stone Chapter, was Evan Essex of Troop 1203 in the Washington Area Council BSA. He received his award at the George Washington Birthday Luncheon in February & will represent the State in the national judging. We have issued 21 certificates so far this year. I d like to especially thank Compatriot Dave Embrey who has helped a lot, presenting nine of the 21. Some of the requests for certificates come in only a few days before the Scout s Eagle Ceremony and we are in need of volunteers in each chapter to make the presentations. Please contact Committee Chairman Jon Streett if you are willing to help with these presentations, whether invited well in advance or as a lastminute notice. Educational Efforts Maryland has had one of its most successful years yet: we have winners in all of our youth contests (Poster, Brochure, Essay, Orations). Our winners are as follows: Americanism Elementary Poster Contest: first place, Maie Ikemoto (Ring Factory Elementary School, Sponsor COL Aquila Hall Chapter); second place, Mason Shirey (Sponsor Westminster Chapter) SGT Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest: Ashley Vajo Joseph S. Congratulations to all of our winners. We wish them the best of success as they represent our State at the national level, with the NSSAR winners announced this July at the SAR National Congress in Boston. We d also like to thank all the chapters that participated this year to make these possible. Without the efforts of our chapters, these programs wouldn t be the success that they are. If your chapter hasn t competed, consider volunteering to serve as your chapter s chairman. Our State Chairmen for these programs would be glad to help you in developing your local chapter s efforts.

MD 400 Board of Trustees The Board of Managers has approved the procedure for requests for project funding from the Maryland 400 Fund. If you have a project in mind, please fill out the form to be found in the Members Only section of the MDSSAR Website and get it to the Third Vice President at least a month before a Board of Managers meeting (the next being the Semi-Annual Meeting in October) so that the Board of Trustees of the fund can review the request and make a recommendation for the Board of Manager s consideration. The Maryland 400 Board of Trustees meeting was held On 18 May 2016 at the Timbuktu Restaurant in Hanover, MD. Members in attendance were: Tim Mallory (3rd VP, and Chairman of MD 400 Board of Trustees), Ret. MG Jim Adkins (2nd VP), and King Barnes (MD 400 appointed member). A quorum for the Board of Trustees was not achieved; four members must be present and at least two must be appointed Board members. The Board reviewed a proposal initiated by the GEN Wm. Smallwood Chapter pertaining to gravestone markers at Monocacy Cemetery, Montgomery County, to be paid by the MD 400 Patriots Fund. The Board members present all agreed that this sort of project should have been coordinated with the Graves & Markers Committee, not the MD 400. Jim Adkins referred to the guidance document, MDSSAR By-Laws, approved 12 April 2012 that is used for MD 400 operating policies and procedures. Another topic pertaining to the adoption of MD 400 fundraising categories was discussed. The fundraising plan entails creating military ranks based on cumulative donations made by MDSSAR members. More details on this fundraising plan will be forthcoming at a future Board of Managers (BOM) meeting. 10 Monuments & Grave Markers Have you qualified for the Patriot Grave Marking Medal? Authorized in 2012, it can be presented by the National Society, District Vice President General or a State Society President. Approved by NSSAR Patriot Index/Revolutionary War Graves Register Committee and the State Society (President or state chairman), the Patriot Grave Marking Medal recognizes both past efforts to identify and report data on Revolutionary War graves and to encourage new efforts to identify graves. The data generated by these efforts will meet educational objectives by continuing to build and improve the existing database on these patriots by listing their final resting places. It meets historical objectives by providing data to potential members and by identifying these significant places so that they may not be lost to future generations. Several criteria need to be met to qualify for the Patriot Grave Marking Medal. A Compatriot must have participated in a prominent role during the planning and execution of the grave marking. This includes, but is not limited to, researching/finding the grave, paying for or placing the SAR marker, or being the Master of Ceremonies and Speaker/Presenter. With respect to the researching or paying for the SAR marker, a compatriot does not need to be a resident of the state in which the grave is located to conduct these activities. A Compatriot must have participated, as defined above, in at least fifteen (15) grave marking events with a look-back period to 1 March If a mass grave is marked or if multiple graves are marked in a single cemetery, a Compatriot will be allowed to count a maximum of five (5) patriots towards this requirement. Up to, but no more than, 50% of the submitted grave markings may be without the placement of an SAR marker. A Compatriot must have submitted data on the Grave location, including but not limited to providing photographs, address, GPS location and such other data as required by the National Patriot Graves Committee, to both their State Patriot Graves Committee (if one is established) and the National Patriot Graves Committee prior to applying for the medal. Compatriots who believe they qualify for the medal must complete the appropriate form setting forth their qualifications, and including the supporting documentation. This form is available on the SAR website, and must be signed by either the state society president or the state patriot graves committee chairman (as reported to the National Patriot Graves Committee), and be submitted to the National Patriot Graves Committee. Officer Reports 1st Vice President Good day everyone, we have started the season with a great deal of enthusiasm as our first BOM meeting was both informative and invigorating (with a good turn-out). Thank you Jim Adkins for the beautiful venue. While I have contacted each of my assigned chapter presidents, I plan to visit as many chapters, within our state, as possible. June I attended the NSDAR's Continental Congress in Washington D.C. and next month I will be attending our National Society's Annual Congress in Boston. Our SAR Auto Tag project is progressing with a summary report scheduled for late August or early September. Please note that planning for our State Society's annual meeting is underway with Annapolis currently at the top of the list as our venue. Please feel free to offer comments or suggestions regarding this matter. Donald A. Deering 2nd Vice President As summer approaches, I know our schedules are full of activities. I look forward to visiting chapter activities across the state. In addition to local SAR activities, I will be attending the National Society's Annual Congress in Boston in July and the Middle States Association Annual Conference in Albany in August as well as the Battle of Brooklyn bus trip on August 20th. An enhanced recognition system for donors to the MD 400 fund will be out shortly. We hope that our efforts to tell the story of the Maryland 400 in partnership with the Maryland Archives and the upcoming trip to Brooklyn in August will inspire more donations to the Maryland 400 Fund. Planning for the Maryland Society's semiannual meeting to be held on October 22nd is underway. I would appreciate any ideas to enhance this meeting, so don't hesitate to drop me a note.

3rd Vice President I am very proud to be elected as 3rd VP MDSSAR in April My primary focus as the 3rd VP pertains to the Maryland 400 Patriots Fund, and chairman of the Board of Trustees. I am planning and organizing MDSSAR observances, ceremonies, and entertainment to include community involvement by the DAR and CAR when the venue is appropriate. I serve as the liaison for and visit five MDSSAR Chapters: John Paul Jones, COL Tench Tilghman, John Hanson, CAPT John Smoot, and Thomas Stone. These Chapters are widely dispersed along the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, and in southern Maryland. I am developing calendar plans to partake in the regional Chapter events, and am scheduling dates to participate in meetings and events. While the current dates I have yet to hear, in the past events have included: 1) a wreath laying at the French Monument, Annapolis by John Paul Jones Chapter, 2) a wreath laying at the grave of William Paca, Wye Plantation by COL Tench Tilghman Chapter 3) Wreaths Across America at Cheltenham by the John Hanson Chapter, and 4) a wreath laying at the grave of Thomas Stone, Port Tobacco. Please let me know when these or any other events or meetings are planned, and I will try to attend. Secretary We have fifteen chapters in the Maryland Society and all of them are active and doing excellent work in meetings and events to fulfill our mission as stated in Article II of our Constitution as follows: The objects of this Society shall be to perpetuate the memory of the men and women who, by their services or sacrifices during the War of the American Revolution ( ) achieved the independence of the American people; to unite and promote fellowship among their descendants; to inspire them and the community at large with a more profound reverence for the principles of government founded by our forefathers; to encourage historical research in relation to the American Revolution; to acquire, preserve and publish the records of the individual services of the patriots of the War, as well as documents concerning the same; to conserve relics and landmarks; to mark the scenes of the Revolution by appropriate memorials; to celebrate the anniversaries of the prominent events of the War; to foster true patriotism, and to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom. If you want to share the information regarding your events with those outside of your chapter, please send the details to me and I will forward it to others. When you send the information to me, please specify to whom you wish the information to be sent. There are several options: 1. All those in my address book, plus those known to not have As in #1 above, plus the leadership of the Maryland D.A.R. and Maryland S.A.R. 3. The officers and managers of the Maryland Society. 4. The members of the executive committee of the Maryland Society. I recommend you always directly inform President William Smithson and the vice president of the Maryland Society who is responsible for your chapter. In addition, I suggest that you request Webmaster Christopher Raborg place your upcoming events and meetings on our Maryland Society website. It is a pleasure to serve as your State Secretary. J. Patrick Warner Treasurer In order for your chapter not your lose their tax exempt status they must file IRS Form 990-N at least once every three years. We have learned that trying to regain tax exempt status once lost will cost the chapter in excess of $1000 and many hours of effort to reapply. Here is the information from the IRS website: Please contact me if you have unresolved questions about this requirement. Registrar We have again reached over 100 applications in a single year with a majority from Christopher Smithson who is often getting a family plan. Remember if you sign as first line sponsor of ten new members, you will receive the coveted National Society Liberty Medal. Before mailing a completed application to me, please make sure you follow the guidelines of highlighting/underlining the subjects name and numbering the generation on each document. No unnecessary staples, stick notes, etc. They are removed immediately and slow down the process. Primary documentation only please. Undocumented sources are also discarded. You cannot grow if you are not helping new people with applications. Christos Christou Jr or cchristousoc@gmail.com Year New Members

Historian One of the duties of the Historian of the Maryland Society Sons of the American Revolution is to maintain the Society s archives of items such as meeting minutes, membership applications, annual reports, photographs, and newspaper clippings dating back to the establishment of the Society in Since 1992, we have partners with Langsdale Library of the University of Baltimore to serve as repository for these invaluable records of our organization. The MDSSAR archival collections are being reviewed item by item to ensure the organization is practical for research needs. Additionally, a condition assessment is ongoing to identify conservation issues and supplies needed to ensure the long-term preservation of the collection. This assessment follows the conservation protocol of the National Park Service Museum Handbook, and includes a review of the facility (security, fire, theft), environment (temperature, relative humidity, light), and object specific conservation in an acid-free environment. MDSSAR chapters and officers are encouraged to contact Historian James Perry (james_perry21@verizon.net of [301] ) to arrange to transfer records to for preservation in the archives. Organizing Secretary Although an Organizing Secretaries original responsibility was to help with the development of new chapters his role has expanded over the years to the support of chapters that may need help. This help can be with organizing meetings, experience with existing SAR programs and possible support to help a chapter enter new programs. As a past president of the Society, I am pleased to help any chapter develop ideas or programs that support our Societies goals. We were able to rent the hall which had a beautiful view of the Susquehanna River and the ferry crossing location used in Revolutionary War times. The Legion post provided a continental breakfast and a luncheon of pit beef, turkey and ham as well as baked beans and other sides. Dessert was homemade pies from the Bayou Restaurant in Havre de Grace. Havre de Grace has a very significant Revolutionary history. In 1666 the Post Road was developed. This road connected Baltimore and south with Philadelphia. Over a hundred years later, delegates to the Continental Congress from the south would pass through here and cross the river on the ferry. In 1781 a portion of Count Rochambeau's army crossed the river at this ferry and marched down Union Avenue on their way to Yorktown. The Legion) during that time was an inn. General Washington and many Revolutionary War leaders stayed here; one of those leaders was a young former French lieutenant. He became convinced that the American cause in its revolutionary war was noble and travelled to the New World seeking glory in it. Congress commissioned him a major general on 31 July 1777, when they learned he would serve without pay. Washington met Lafayette the 5th of August 1777 and was impressed by the young man's enthusiasm and was inclined to think well of a fellow Mason. He was wounded in his first battle at the Battle of Brandywine, and when recovered, he returned to duty and fought in many campaigns. In 1782 this young man recounted that seeing this town reminded him of the French sea port of Le Havre, and when the town was incorporated in 1785 it was called Havre de Grace. The Ladies and Guests program was a van tour of historic sites in Havre de Grace led by local tour guide Bob Magee. The tour featured a stop at the Visitor s Center and the diorama which featured a narrative on colonial Havre de Grace as well as the British attack on Havre de Grace in the War of The group also visited the Concord Point Lighthouse and Light Keeper s house, located at the site of the British landing in The final stop was Bomboy s Homemade Chocolates. After the morning meeting a commemoration ceremony was held at the statue of the Marquis de Lafayette which stands in a small park across from the American Legion. 1st Vice President William Smithson was master of ceremonies. He read a short biography of Lafayette and highlighted his visits to the Havre de Grace area during the Revolution and after. Lafayette noted that the site on the bank of the Susquehanna River reminded him of his home town of Le Havre in his native France. When the city was incorporated in 1785 it was named Havre de Grace (Harbor of Grace) in recognition of Lafayette s observation. Following the brief remarks, Mid Atlantic VPG George Jones presented a wreath. Wreaths were also presented by MDSSAR President Jim Engler, Sr., Maryland DAR Regent Carol Larkin and Governor William Paca DAR chapter representative Leda Behseresht. Following the presentations, the MDSSAR Color Guard fired three musket volleys. The City of Havre de Grace Police Department provided traffic assistance for the ceremony. COL Aquila Hall Chapter provided two barbeque-themed baskets for the fundraiser. The fundraiser brought in $ Onward to Brooklyn! MDSSAR Is sponsoring a bus trip to Brooklyn this August. This being the 240 th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, we re hoping that many of our Compatriots will join us on this trip. The trip is also open to non-sar members. Third VP Mallory encourages members to participate in this year s bus trip to Brooklyn, NY. The bus holds 55 people and is filling up fast. See the flyer in this newsletter. Please RSVP by August 7th to Treasurer Gary R. Neal, and make your checks payable to MDSSAR $75/person (includes lunch at OSH). We need a minimum of 35 participants. The bus trip will be on Saturday, August 20th, departs 7am from White Marsh Park n Ride, and returns at 8pm. There will be a Maryland 400 remembrance ceremony with music, color guard and salute. There will be a reading of the Patriots names that served. The Old Stone House will provide a box lunch. The Old Stone House is a reconstruction of the 1699 Vechte-Cortelyou House. It is located in Washington Park, Brooklyn, NY. The original house was destroyed in 1897 but has been rebuilt (an excavation recovered some original building materials in 1934). It was the site of the well-known 1776 Battle of Brooklyn, in which 256 Maryland soldiers lives were lost. The site includes a museum and has a permanent exhibit on the battle. In preparation for your visit, explore the website,

Philip Nichols, Jr., a longtime Laurel resident, is one of those people who people wonder, "Am I as good of a man as I should be?" "People think that judges are detached and may not have the same set of concerns that we do," said Attorney Mallon Snyder, who has known Nichols for about four decades, since before he became a judge. "Phil really cares. He's a good man, and he lives a good life." In June Nichols, who was appointed to the Prince George's Co Circuit Court in The MD State Bar Association created the honor in 1998 in memory of a judge known for the respect and dignity with which he treated everyone in his courtroom.
