UUCP Member, Shea Winterberger General Assembly is upon us! It is a time when Unitarian Universalists gather together from far and wide to celebrate and search for (responsibly, of course) what it means to be UU. Please join me for a short history of Unitarian Universalism and my personal take on our uncommon denomination as someone who was raised in the faith. July 2 Going Home Again Rev. Dr. Julie Kain With summer travels to visit family and family reunions, many of us have unfinished business stirred up in us. How can we take these opportunities to come to terms with the experiences we had in our families of origin, to heal old wounds, and to cultivate new levels of relationship with those important people from our past? July 9 Summer Sabbath Rev. Dr. Julie Kain Taking a break from our routines to rest and refresh is one of the gifts of summer. In what ways can your summer offer you a time for personal reflection and renewal? July 16 Pilgrimage Rev. Dr. Julie Kain Have you ever had a deep longing to go to a certain place as if it was calling to you? We will explore the significance of personal journeys and how they can lead us to new life directions. July 23 About Vulnerability UUCP Member James McKey James has had the good fortune to fail big since moving to Pensacola two years ago. And while face down in the dirt he's learned the value of owning his story, embracing vulnerability, and realizing we all experience shame (the "S" word) on a daily basis if we choose to honestly engage others and dare to do great things. 2 PAGE 2 The Light - June 2017 Dear Members and Friends, Unitarian Universalist Church of Pensacola Rev. Dr. Julie Kain, Minister 9888 Pensacola Boulevard Pensacola, Florida Phone: uucp@bellsouth.net Web: June 8, 2017 I announced in my sermon on June 4 that next year will be my final one in ministry with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Pensacola. I arrived at this decision because I believe it is best for the future of my ministry personally and professionally and I feel it is best for the congregation. I plan to conclude my time with you on May 31, I am so proud of all we have accomplished together in the past eleven years! I have every confidence that the loving strength and integrity of this congregation and its members will continue through the years to come. I announced my decision well before the beginning of the next program year for two reasons. First, I want to leave on the best possible terms with ample time to celebrate these past years and to say our goodbyes. Secondly, I hope with this advance notice, the congregation and its leadership can begin to make its plans for the future. Typically a minister announces their planned departure in the spring of the year, once they have confirmed their next settlement. I chose not to do this, knowing the congregation and leadership would have more time to prepare for the coming changes. Often an interim minister is arranged for a period of one to two years. The congregation is free to choose when and if a search process will take place for a new settled minister. In my time here I have encouraged each person in our community to grow in the directions that are most meaningful to you. Whether sharing talents and interests for the first time, or taking a leap of faith to chart a new direction with education, work and even family commitments, I hope you have felt my support and the support of this community. We have had to face some tough challenges together in recent months. Two congregational endeavors were presented and initiated - the ordination of a community minister and a parish internship with a ministerial candidate. On a larger scale, we faced an unprecedented national election resulting in dramatic results. These challenges combined have brought confusion, uncertainty and anxiety within and well beyond our congregation. Meanwhile this past year, some extraordinary pastoral issues arose. Additionally, we had a series of changes in church staffing. As supervisor of all paid positions, I was charged with helping to establish continuity in church office staff and functioning, custodial and lawn services, and in arranging a musician for our Sunday services and volunteers in the sound room. These kinds of tasks, along with many others, will need to be transitioned back into oversight by lay leadership in anticipation of my departure. We have excellent lay leadership and I am already working with them in this direction. With gratitude and faith in our future, Rev. Dr. Julie Kain

3 The Light June / July 2017 President s Notes: PAGE 3 Monthly column from our Board President, Audrey Preston CHANGED STATUS OF PARISH INTERNSHIP AT UUCP In this, my last column as Board President, I would like to thank the rest of the Board for their service this year as well as Rev. Julie for helping guide me through the duties of my position, and Honor for patiently awaiting my monthly Light articles :) Dear Members and Friends, Our Annual Meeting was well-attended and those in attendance were engaged in the business of the church. I thank you all for your active involvement with our congregation and for helping us put into practice our 5th principle! Lastly, I welcome the newly elected board with Kate Wolverton at the lead. I look forward to the next year. ~Audrey May Board Meeting Synopsis: The Board approved the slate of church leaders to be presented to the congregation for their vote at the Annual Meeting on May 21. The results of the second phase of the Budget drive were announced, and an additional $12,000 was raised. This enabled the Finance Committee to restore almost all of the proposed cuts; the only remaining eliminations being funding for the OWL program and for future ministry interns. (The OWL leadership is undertaking their own fundraiser to meet next year s expenses.) The revised budget was presented to the congregation at the Annual Meeting. The Board made recommendations regarding requests for financial assistance for members attending General Assembly in June. Work continues on the new UUCP website, and volunteers are needed to assist in building the site and updating content. Your high-quality digital photos are welcome.. The last week of May, we were informed by our Intern Minister, Sara Green, that she wished to renegotiate her Internship Agreement so as to complete it while living in New Orleans. We, as Board representatives, as well as Rev. Julie, as her supervising minister, voiced our concerns about Sara being able to fulfill the service of time requirements specified for a full -time parish internship while commuting from New Orleans. These concerns were confirmed as being correct by David Pettee, the UUA Ministerial Credentialing Director. After efforts to redirect negotiations back to the expected requirements, on Monday, June 5th, Rev. Julie, as the supervising minister, submitted written notice to Sara Green and David Pettee terminating the Internship Agreement due to the determination that the internship could not be successfully completed under the proposed circumstances. While this is disappointing for all involved parties, Sara will still be eligible to apply for another internship with a different congregation in order to complete the credentialing requirements for all Unitarian Universalist ministers parish, community or religious education. Per our Internship Agreement, Sara was given thirty days notice and will be paid the internship stipend through June. Due to so many upheavals happening within our congregation in such a short period of time, we have been in contact with Connie Goodbread and Rev. Carlton Smith, both Congregational Life Staff in the UUA Southern Region. They have offered to facilitate some Listening Circles within our congregation so that members of our congregation can share their concerns and questions with each other. We will be scheduling a date with Connie and Carlton in July to do so. In the meantime, if there are any questions or concerns, we urge you to reach out to us. Signed, Audrey Preston, President, and Mark Beyerl, President-Elect Do you ever wonder what goes on at board meetings? There is a 3ring binder in the church office with all the meeting minutes and you're welcome to attend! We want to make sure our UU family is informed and up to date! 4 The Light - June 2017 PAGE 4 President s Notes July 2017 First, thank you for electing me to be your church board President. I love this UUCP community and I will do my best to lead. I am glad I ll be working with Audrey Preston as Past President and Mark Beyerl as President Elect, both of whom are very capable, caring and effective leaders. Thanks to them for everything they have done this past year. And, I have my husband Jack as my right-hand man (can t beat that)! I also look forward to working together with our new church board. With news of Rev Dr. Julie s plans to leave our congregation, we are facing new challenges. We will be engaging our ministry teams and strengthening our community. We will be celebrating her rich contributions to UUCP, and this year s UUCP 60th anniversary. I will be attending a Transitions Workshop with Penny Featherstone in New Orleans to be informed about the search process in which we will likely be engaged in the future. Having so many congregants attend UU General Assembly in New Orleans is bound to invigorate our community. I look forward to hearing and learning what the GA attendees bring back to share with our congregation. Speak respectfully, listen to understand, and to behave compassionately. ~Kate Wolverton Welcome New Members! In the service on May 21, we welcomed Don Harrison, Renee Perry, David Sanford, Tyler Smith, and Betty and Brent Terry into membership with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Pensacola. We are so glad you are here! We offer our best wishes for healing and good recovery to Sharon West following an auto accident, Billye Cutchen and Peggy Edwards following recent procedures, and to Judy Freeman and Evelyn Jackson, both recovering after a fall. We offer our supportive thoughts to Debra DuBose who has a surgery in late June. Congratulations to two couples in our community who have announced their wedding engagements! Best wishes to our volunteer choir director A Message from Rev. Bob Eddy What is your passion? Input for 5th Sunday Offering Needed Rev. Bob Eddy is Minister Emeritus of UUCP A video of the entire Memorial Service for Gerry Eddy is available on YouTube by going to bobandgerryeddy.com. The slide show of her life can also be found there. Seder Thanks A special thank you to all who set-up, cooked, participated and cleaned up as part of the Seder. It was a lovely evening and warmed my heart to share this tradition. Looking forward to streamlining and offering a Seder again next Passover. In gratitude, Penny Olivia Hawkins and Raistlin Drouillard, and to new board member Tyler Smith and James Hutcheson. How exciting! Bon voyage and safe travels to Steve Hawkins (father of Olivia, see above) as he embarks on a three-year teaching assignment in China. We ll be seeing you at Olivia and Raistlin s wedding! What local organization would you like our UU congregation to help in working toward a solving or ameliorating a social justice problem? At our annual meeting on May 21st we voted as a congregation to take measures to protect the democratic process. There are a number of different organizations in town which are active in addressing parts of this problem. We may choose to do direct actions on this issue in coordination with these other groups while giving our 5th Sunday Plate to an organization which is impacted by the lack of protection to our democratic process. However, you do not need to be confined to finding an organization that works on that issue directly. Do not be restricted in your nominations. In the next church year there are 5 fifth Sundays to consider. They fall in July, October, December, April and July. There is a clip board on the bulletin board in the North Hall where you can register your nominations. Or you can contact the church by phone or , or call Paula Montgomery ( ) or Scott Satterwhite ( ) or Rev. Julie ( ). We will consider all the nominations and get back in touch with you for further information. What non-profit is addressing an issue close to your heart? Speak up. Let our congregation honor their work."

CRE Goals are to engage Children, youth and teens in meaningful exploration of our Unitarian Universalist Church of Pensacola community through simple interactions with their surroundings and to develop a sense of our UU identity and a personal commitment to living our seven Unitarian Universalist Principles. Summer time and everything is fine! What a great year we had in RE! I am so grateful to all our people that served our children this year in RE. We couldn t have done it without you! Each Sunday will be led by a dedicated CRE facilitator. Each class will be formatted the same with Opening words, sharing of joys and concerns, a moral lesson relating to one of the UU seven principles, a simple craft or activity and closing words. Children should dress comfy casual (not afraid to get dirty) and closed toe shoes. 6 PAGE 6 The Light - June 2017 Betty Lou Terry has worked as a medical assistant in a hospital lab, as a nail technician, and as a real estate broker and sales manager. She s now working towards a BS degree in Health Science at University of West Florida, after receiving an AA from Pensacola State College. She earlier graduated from a vocational school for Medical Assistants. Betty Lou is from Mercer, PA., a small historic town 60 miles north of Pittsburgh with a beautiful domed county courthouse in the center of town. I moved to Richmond, VA, in 1983 to live with my sister which is where she met Brent Terry. After we married in 1985 we moved to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and blankets of snow. In 2004, they moved to Florida to get out of the gray skies of Pennsylvania, and today live in Pace. Their son, Jon, is a postal carrier and has two children. Their daughter, Lauren, is a student at PSC. Both live in Pace. Music, gardening, volunteering and motorcycling are prominent for Betty in life along the Gulf Coast. I enjoy listening to music. I love to dig in the dirt, and find gardening and reading nonfiction my way to connect to the world. On the flip side I loved to get out of town on my Harley Davidson. While we were in the motorcycle business I became a rider coach for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation working one weekend a month to promote motorcycle safety, coaching riders both in the classroom and through motorcycle exercises on the riding range. Vroom Vroom. Betty also has volunteered at One Blood, both at blood drives and helping their HR department sort through files needing to be scanned or pitched. Her current political interests center on the EPA and FDA. I don t like Big Pharma and feel the media grossly misrepresents the magnitude of health reform. Currently I am working to combine my knowledge in health science administration with a license in skin care to make a positive difference in the face of tomorrow. (!) When it comes to religion, I was practically born on the front row of the First Baptist Church of Mercer, attending since I was two weeks old. As an adult, my spiritual life has been my own. I have attended several churches, but chose not to become a member. The appeal of Unitarianism to me is the acceptance and acknowledgement of diversity and the challenge of tolerance. I enjoy the music and appreciate the message of the UU Church of Pensacola. Brent Terry is an artist of both the kinds you see and hear. He s a jewelry designer. He taught design and metalsmithing at Virginia Commonwealth University, and owned jewelry stores in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, where he repaired fine jewelry and made customdesigned pieces. He was the resident artist at Cary Wilson Gallery in Richmond, Va., and operations director for the Park West gallery in Detroit. Brent is a musician. He took voice lessons for 10 years starting at age 4, sang in a Methodist church choir through high school, played trumpet in the high school band and taught himself folk guitar while in college. He was founder and lead singer of the Hudson Bay Company, a folk band that toured Michigan and Canada for eight years, until And now, he s a new member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Pensacola, along with his wife, Betty, with whom he shares two children, a son, 27, who has two children of his own, and a daughter, 21. On the importance of family life, Brent reveals a sense of humor: My wife of 32 years this summer still speaks to me as do my children. This I consider my biggest accomplishment! And still, there are other accomplishments: He taught at the grade school and middle school levels in Michigan. He has a bachelor s degree in education and a master s degree in community art education, both from Central Michigan University. He was awarded a National Endowment for work on the Michigan Art Train He attended Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, and the Royal Academy of Art in London. And he owned a motorcycle shop in Pace, Fl. My interest in motorcycling among other interests including RC (remote control) modeling and ceramics led me to purchase a local motorcycle shop in Pace. Betty and I were active members in the motorcycle community for several years. We supported many motorcycle organization fundraisers and riding groups. As economics and interest in motorcycling declined we closed the business and I retired. I now work on the house and in the yard. Brent was born in Detroit, Mich., on March 23, 1949, and was raised by adopted parents in Royal Oak, MI, a Detroit suburb. He graduated from Kimball High School. As for religion, there is today. The appeal of the Unitarian Universalist Church is their support of the living and for future generations of life on earth. Being caretakers, not conquerors. Charlotte Crane

7 The Light June / July 2017 PAGE 7 Tyler Smith is both a new member of UUCP and a recently elected member-at -large of the UUCP Governing Board. Tyler, 24, is working on his master s degree in mathematics and statistics at the University of West Florida, where he is currently a graduate assistant and about to be, this fall, teacher of a College Algebra class. Teaching, says Tyler, has suggested for him a link between math and life. Many students don t think they are good at math or think that they were born without the predisposition to math. I try to show them that all this subject is, and ever will be, is a collection of puzzles and games. I like to think life works the same way, once you know all the rules, and that everything is connected, almost anyone can create a strategy to be successful. In life however, people rarely give you the rules before you break them. Tyler was born and raised in Stafford, Va., graduated from Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., with a bachelor of science in mathematics in After graduating college, he worked at an inner city public school called Heritage High School in Hampton, Va., teaching geometry and pre -calculus. He moved to Pensacola in June 2016 and now lives in Milton. His fiancé, James Hutcheson, is in Flight School to fly helicopters in the Navy and stationed in Milton. James also attends UUCP and is a member of a Norfolk, Va., UU. Pensacola is different from Virginia, but we are slowly getting used to it. We have found areas and people that make us feel safe and happy. The church is one of them. Every Sunday we get to re-center ourselves. Tyler grew up in a Lutheran Church, often volunteering as an acolyte. James s mother introduced him to the Unitarian Church. There I started enjoying Unitarian Universalism for using all religions and history to reshape your understanding of the world and how to live in it. No one has all the answers, but sitting down once a week and thinking about how you can be part of the best solution you can make at the time is a step to becoming a better person, I think. Among Tyler s life adventures (so far): trips to Cancun, Las Vegas and The Grand Canyon. Hobbies include playing video games and bingewatching television shows. But he also enjoys learning, reading and making a difference in our community, in ways which would include, says Tyler, taking on a role at the UU church to help advance the diversity and spread love and understanding. At UUCP, Tyler enjoys the periods of meditation and silence during the service. He describes Bobby van Deusen s piano performances and the music as fantastic. And he thinks that the way everyone is engaging and listens is really important. What he would like to see added: something that helps us understand and process other religious practices and traditions. Education is halfway to understanding. If you eat at Boneheads on a Sunday and bring a copy of that Sunday's Order of Service with you, Boneheads will donate 10% of your purchase to the church! Boneheads is located on Highway 90, close to the entrance to UWF and before you cross the bridge. Check out their website and menu. boneheadspensacola.com Wed. July 12, 1pm Location: TBD Dear Regular Lunch Bunchers, and any newly interested UU s: For June, the 14th's Lunch Bunch turned out fine, with good weather, with about 24 attending, about 15 from UUCP and 9 from her Milton family, for Birthday Gal Flo Fulwiler's 95th Birthday at Grover T's BBQ (the main entree, but catfish was likely #2).... Flo and Barbara Goggins (asking the questions) delivered an informative and entertaining narrative of Flo's early life, (1922 on...) in particular her experience in the WWII's mobilization, her time in the Navy and "courting" of Leo Fulwiler, who is well and fondly remembered by older members of UUCP. (Perhaps we can repeat next year with a DVD camera.) The event was largely facilitated by Georgieanna Bryant. For our 2nd Wednesday May event at Ruby Slipper, P'x & Main, we asked for seating of 10 and we filled benches for six and seats for four, all the way in the back. Nicely, our diverse orders all arrived about the same time, all seemingly satisfying, and the conversation... hardly ever on the quiet side, and very little political. Women s Spirituality Circle Has taken a break and will no longer meet until further notice. Q&A Audrey Preston
