2 Rev. Dr. Lisa Ruth Mays Interim Pastor First Presbyterian Church 4 Clinton Street Delhi, NY Emergency pastor@fpcdelhi.org The Gift of Hospitality The word hospitality comes to our English language through various archaic forms of the word, including our common word hospital, as in O Connor. The word hospitality and its earlier forms refers to a safe place, a sheltering place, a place of comfort and healing. Hospitality is also a spiritual gift, meaning, the Spirit of God has planted within you the gift something we can t manufacture on our own to be authentically hospitable. God gives people spiritual gifts so that we can bless others and draw others closer to the Giver of the Gifts. The spiritual gift of hospitality reaches far beyond a friendly hello to others, whether in the sanctuary or in the Price Chopper. A spiritual gift grows in us as we put our gifts to God-use. Here is a cliff notes summary of how the gift of hospitality can work in us: In place of impatience with others, we are gracious In place of judging others negatively, we reserve judgment In place of our expertise, we affirm the abilities of others In place mistrusting others whom we do not know well, we warmly welcome strangers Instead of keeping our misery to ourselves, we shower others with love Instead of knowing that we know everything, we let others show us the way. Happy New Year! I pray you put God s gifts to good use. Let s live a new year of Christian Hospitality together in 2019! In Christ s Love, Pastor Lisa
