3 Page 3 Living Beyond Easter falls on April Fool s Day this year. Fitting, since Easter is God s practical joke on the powers of darkness, death, and despair. Easter is God s answer to all that robs us of life and makes us cower in fear. More importantly, Easter is bad news for those who would use fear to maintain their own power. Easter sets us free to live each moment of our lives as the opening salvo of God s never-ending reign of love and life. Happy Easter! Wear your Resurrection proudly! We will be holding our first Beer & Hymns fellowship night on Thursday, April 12 th at Palermo Pizza Shop and Italian Restaurant. Palermo is located at 351 W. Main Street in New Holland. We ll begin arriving around 5:30PM, enjoy singing some favorite hymns and your favorite beer, wine, or whatever you prefer. After a rousing hymn-sing, enjoy pizza or one of Palermo s delicious entrees and relax in an evening of fellowship. I m looking forward to it! Also, I will be leading a workshop in our Sunday morning adult forum called The Sacred Enneagram: the Map of the Soul. The Enneagram is an ancient tool to identify our dominant personality type (there are 9 basic personality types) and help us get in touch with our Essence, or True Self, which is who God created us to be. I can t recommend this highly enough. The Enneagram is a life-changing tool, and this introductory workshop will help you identify your dominant personality type and will give you spiritual and prayer practices designed especially for you! The Adult Forum meets at 9:00AM on Sunday mornings, and this Enneagram workshop will run for the next 6 weeks. I hope you will join us! THE ENNEAGRAM Save the Dates! Wednesday evening, June 13, will be the first day of Trinity s Living Beyond project this year. Each evening during the rest of the week will be devoted to helping those in the community who are unable to do minor repairs or yard work around their houses. The evenings will begin with a light supper and devotions before the teams to out to paint, rake, trim, etc. until dark. Saturday, June 16, will be devoted to finishing up projects followed by a celebration dinner on Sunday, June 17, when the teams will report on their week s work. Bill Kassinger is chairman of the project, and will be signing up volunteers during May and June. This project is so important to those who are unable to work around their houses because of health or financial reasons. If you know of someone who may need this type of assistance, please mention the project to them so they can contact the Church Office. Someone from the church will go to the house to see what needs to be done and determine whether our workers can accomplish it. Those needing assistance do not have to belong to Trinity. Please consider helping out with this project. You don t have to sign-up for every evening, and there are some jobs that are less strenuous than others. The Deadline for the May 2018 Newsletter is Sunday, April 15, 2018
4 Page 4 From the Pen of Linda Krick Music Coordinator/Choir Director HALLELUJAH CHORUS George Frederick Handel, The Messiah, 1741 (condensed version of the text) Hallelujah! Hallelujah! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth. Hallelujah! The kingdom of this world is become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever King of Kings, for ever and ever. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! and Lord of Lords, for ever and ever. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, and He shall reign for ever and ever Hallelujah! Like many of the great composers, Handel ( ) was a child prodigy. He began composing operas at young age and by his twenties he was the best paid composer on earth with people fighting for seats whenever he performed. However, fame is fleeting and Handel s music soon became old-fashioned. No matter what Handel tried, his compositions failed. Bankruptcy and depression followed. Handel had a stroke and developed a palsy that crippled his fingers. It seemed that Handel s career was over. Frederick the Great wrote that Handel s great days are over, his inspiration is exhausted. The composer was in despair. Struggling to earn a living in London, he knew days when he could not afford to buy meals. One night in 1741, depressed and defeated, he wandered the lonely streets; it was almost dawn when he returned to his shabby room. On a table was a thick envelope. It was from Charles Jennens, the man who wrote his librettos (the texts). Examining the pages, he found them covered with Scripture texts. Wearily, he tossed the pages aside and crawled into bed. Too stirred to sleep, he got up and went to his piano. The music flowed from his heart-rich, majestic, triumphant. He began to write. Night and day for three weeks, he wrote feverishly. He forgot sleep, food and rest. The first audience to hear the composition -- in Dublin in gave it the greatest ovation in the city's history. Weeks later, London heard it for the first time, and again it was a triumph. The King was so impressed during the Hallelujah Chorus that he rose to his feet -- a custom that still prevails. (It is unclear why he stood up, he may have been stretching his legs, it is possible that King George, who was partially deaf, mistook the opening notes for the national anthem, or he may have risen to his feet out of respect.) Trinity s choir will be singing Handel s Hallelujah Chorus as the postlude at 10:30 worship on Easter morning, April 1. Linda Krick

The implementation of the Child Protection Policy that was approved by Council at the January 2018 meeting is underway. A training session for all those working with the children is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th. It was reported that the Stewardship Committee is still looking for a chairperson and additional members. The Audit Committee is in need of 2 additional members as well. Please contact any Council Member if you are willing to serve in either of these areas. Council discussed setting goals for the congregation, based on the word cloud created for the Reformation 500 Celebration. Look for more information as the discussion continues. The next meeting of the Council will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 7:00 pm in Fellowship Hall. Council meetings are open to all members of Trinity. Members welcomed! Help for our Veterans Let s show our appreciation to the Veterans for the courage and many sacrifices they made to keep us safe and free. Please remember that the complimentary shampoos, body creams, soaps, etc. from hotels, inns, resorts, etc. are greatly appreciated. Please place these items in the Veterans box in the Narthex. For many Veterans, their battles are far from over. Stricken with health problems and knowing that they are not forgotten makes a big difference. This is a small way for us to make a difference in their lives. We thank you for your support of this ongoing outreach project. There is also a box under the Veterans table to collect GOOD CLEAN MEN S suits, jackets, trousers, shirts, sweaters, hats and belts. Please remember the men and women who fought for the freedom of speech, freedom of worship and freedom from want and fear. This was their hope and goal for mankind. PLEASE NOTE: NO WOMEN S CLOTHING UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
