2 A LETTER FROM LARRY. It has been several weeks now that the Lord has inspired me to preach on the truth about what He has called every person in the Church, needs to be doing if they are to be considered a disciple, or believer in Jesus Christ. Our call from Jesus Christ, our ultimate leader is found in the last few moments that He spent with His disciples before ascending back into heaven to be with His Father. Matthew 28:16-20 records this holy conversation that Jesus has with His disciples. All authority in heaven and on earth has bee given to me. Jesus proclaimed. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. I believe my friends, that this is a call for you and I (the Church), to stand up and be a vehicle for God s truth and tomorrow, and not become a museum piece of God s yesterday For you and I to become the disciple Christ is calling us to be, one who will go and make disciples, it will require us to learn from Jesus on how to be a disciple. A disciple is always learning from their Master. Learning, in the kingdom of God is not about adding extra credits to your existing store of knowledge, nor is it about getting more information; it is about a radical re-formation, like a second birth I believe that discipleship pulls us out of our comfort zone. It is hardly surprising that most prefer to be a comfortable pew sitter instead of a risky disciple. The question for all of to maul over is this, What would Jesus say to you and I for our lack of not fulfill His original call, to make disciples of all nations? I know that it is hard to be a disciple of Christ, due to the simple fact that Christ the very definition of perfection, is calling us imperfect people to come follow Him Jesus is a tough act to follow Discipleship is about following Christ to the best of our ability. The difficult thing about following Christ is to get back on the path to continue the journey when we feel we are poor imitations of Christ, and we have stumbled Last Sunday I invited the leaders of Church offices, to humbly come forward to the alter and seek Christ s forgiveness for not putting discipleship in the forefront of our Church. Then I asked the remaining church members to come forward in the same humble attitude, seeking forgiveness from God for not being the disciple that God is calling us to be. It was an opportunity to get real with our Savior and confess our lack of desire to follow Him the way He wants us to So what s the next step for the Church? I have brought this issue before the Discipleship Committee. The committee must take the lead of starting to plan the path of discipleship and then in turn show the rest of the congregation that clear path of discipleship. They have agreed to begin an intense study on a recommended book entitled, Deepening Your Effectiveness (Restructuring the local Church for life transformation) Glover and Lavy. This resource has been very helpful for me in understanding where as a church leader I have been missing the mark to be effect as a disciple for Christ, and encouraging the church to do the same. Please pray for the Discipleship Committee as they embark on this spiritual adventure. Pray for wisdom, understanding, and a vision for plan to help the whole congregation become a disciple-making Church. Now, as the rest of the congregation awaits and prays for that clear path of disciple ship to be fleshed out, commit to being with God more than you are right this minute in your life. Build and improve on your relationship with Him. Let Him know that you love Him now more than ever. I am positive that He would silence all of heaven just to hear one of His children say, Love You Father. In His grip, Larry 2

YOUTH GROUP This month s youth group meetings will be on Sunday, February 8th during the worship service and Sunday, February 22nd at 6:00pm. Ash Wednesday Service February 18, :00 pm There will be a day of scrapbooking fellowship on Saturday, February 21st in the Fellowship hall from 12:30-2:30 pm. For more information contact Hazel Taft or Linda Carnes. LUNCH BUNCH The Lunch Bunch will be having a free lunch on Wednesday, February 25th at noon in the Fellowship Hall. This month s menu features breakfast dishes. Please join us for great food and fellowship and invite your friends and neighbors. Hope to see you there. GARDEN THYME II SPEAKER Nashville Garden Thyme II Garden club invites anyone interested to attend the meeting on Monday, March 16 at 7:00 pm. 4 Nashville United Methodist Church Administrative Council Meeting January 19, 2015 Laurie Etzwiler called the meeting to order. In attendance were Laurie Etzwiler, Sue Weimer, Jody Irwin, Bill Taillon, Shirley Pringle, Chuck Oswalt, Shari Oswalt, Lee Smetzer, Larry Carnes, Linda Carnes. Laurie reminded members that it was Martin Luther King Day and a federal holiday in which Dr. King should be remembered for his contributions. Pastor Larry gave a devotional referencing Psalm 15. Minutes were read by acting secretary Laurie Etzwiler, motion to approve by Bill Taillon, seconded by Chuck Oswalt. After discussion, motion to have paper copies of minutes submitted before every meeting and handed out to members, rather than read by secretary was made by Lee Smetzer, seconded by Bill Taillon, motion passed. Chairperson Laurie Etzwiler will inform the secretary to minutes to church secretary at least 5 days before each meeting. The end of the 2014 year treasurer report was handed out. After discussion, Lee Smetzer moved to approve the report as presented, Bill Taillon seconded, motion passed. Finance committee No report. Discipleship committee met December 9, They reported that the afterschool program had about 20 to 28 children per week. Several of the after school children participated in the candy cane Christmas program. The past Saturday was VBS preview day. The committee is considering which VBS curriculum to purchase. The committee has decided to collect a couple items for Operation Christmas child each month throughout the year. Boxes will be put together and wrapped in October. They reported that there have been 10 children participating in youth group, held twice per month. Trustees met December 10, 2014 with 10 present. The stained glass window repairs have been delayed until spring. The committee is checking on replacing some windows in the parsonage. The carpets are cleaned and the tile floor waxed. Mission Committee No report PPR committee No report Worship Committee met January 12, Worship is planned through April, including Lenten services. Ash Wednesday is February 18; the first Sunday in Lent is February 22. They are planning a Lenten series with 4 readers who will extinguish a candle each Sunday in a countdown to Easter. They are still discussing Maundy Thursday services, possibly with a Seder meal. A musical tribute to Lucille Hess is planned for April 12. The committee is considering Easter boxes. Nominating Committee No Report Fellowship Committee No Report Sunday School steward reported $ in funds with all invoices paid. Multi Media No Report Old Business: No news on the membership review. New Business: A question arose about the church policy on donations or flowers in remembrance of church members or their families who have passed away. The former person who took care of this is no longer able to do so and the current persons responsible do not have a policy to follow. After much discussion, the administrative council accepted the suggestion that the Wednesday afternoon covenant group could work on a policy for honoring the deceased church members or church members families. They will present a draft policy at the next administrative council. A motion was made to move administrative council to Tuesdays. Motion by Bill Taillon, seconded by Chuck Oswalt. Next meeting will be Tuesday, March 17, 2015, Bill Taillon moved to adjourn. 4

5 OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD In February, we are collecting toothbrushes and/or a tube of toothpaste for the donation box in the foyer. LENDING LIBRARY There are now Christian reading materials and music for you to borrow in the bookcase in the Sunday school hallways You are welcome to add items to the shelf that you would like to share with others. Please sign out items that you borrow and sign them in when you return them. We are again collecting money, candy and notes of encouragement for college students. We have 2 students, one at Mount Union and one at Wilmington. Donations may be given to Sue Weimer, Laurie Etzwiler or placed in the bag marked college students. The next shipment is scheduled for February 10 to arrive in time for Valentine s day. In January, our church furnished 5 bags of plastic containers and bags to the Love Center and $6.00 to the Lakeville Food Pantry. The Mexico Mission Team is planning a soup and salad dinner for the end of February. Watch for more information to come. 5

7 Kid s Corner SAVE IGA LABELS TO SUPPORT THE YOUTH Save original UPC barcodes (all UPC codes beginning in ) from eligible IGA Exclusive Brand products for proof of purchase and bring them to the church. The Youth will earn $50.00 cash for every 500 original UPC labels. There will be a collection box on the counter in the vestibule. You only need to save the barcode, not the whole product label. 7

Box 399 Nashville, OH Phone: (330) Website: nashville-umc.org CHEESEBURGER SOUP 1/2 pound ground beef 3/4 cup chopped onion 3/4 cup shredded carrots 3/4 cup diced celery 1 tsp. dried basil 1 tsp. dried parsley flakes 4 Tbsp. butter 3 cups chicken broth 4 cups diced peeled potatoes 1/4 cup flour 8 ounces process American Cheese 1 1/2 cups milk 3/4 tsp. salt 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/4 cup sour cream (optional) In a 3 quart saucepan, brown beef; drain and set aside. In the same saucepan, sauté onion, carrots, celery, basil and parley in 1 Tbsp. butter until vegetables are tender (about 10 minutes). Add broth, potatoes, and beef; bring to boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer minutes or until potatoes are tender. Meanwhile in a small skillet, melt remaining butter. Add flour, cook and stir until bubbly. Add to soup; bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Add cheese, milk, salt, and pepper; cook and stir until cheese melts. Remove from the heat and blend in sour cream. 8
